UIC Student Recreation Facility: Opinions

Negative experience: We were racially profiled by the front desk! This was so disheartening, especially because I had never been on this campus before! GPS led us to this location for tropical smoothie cafe on 03/26/25. Upon arrival, I informed the young lady at the front desk that I just wanted to come and get a smoothie, it was 15 minutes before the smoothie shop closed. She asked me to sign in and leave an ID. While waiting for the smoothie, I saw her continuously to surveillance our every move. We sat in the space behind her so she could see we weren't roaming. While we waited for our smoothie, the person I was with asked the smoothie guy could he use the restroom. As soon as we got our smoothies, we sat back down to taste it before we left and before the smoothie guy closed down and she called security to escort us out. I've never been so embarrassed! Being a new resident to Chicago, I would have never expected that experience from a renowned university! If you are not a student, I would not recommend this location for tropical smoothie cafe! Updated based upon UIC response: Thank you for responding. I find it quite interesting after speaking to a couple of my colleagues (we are in the medical district) about this matter, they informed me that they have never signed in. Nor do they hold membership at the University and we are all passed the level of education for the University. I also find it interesting, that "I" informed the front desk clerk that this was my first visit and asked what do I need to do. She never informed me of a 15min policy nor are there any signage of this. Your verbiage insinuated that your cameras painted a different picture that what was said. I would be interested in viewing where you have "me" on camera doing anything outside of what "i" stated. Despite me walking in with someone, only "I" signed in and only "I" gave my property to the lady. Not once did i roam or view your facility... I didn't even know it was a recreation center, nor do i have interest in touring your facility. Suggestion for you... maybe you guys should produce a signage for visitors so they can be aware of your wavering policy and better yet maybe you should rearrange the position of tropical smoothie cafe from the center to the security area so therefore guests do not have to enter the facility at all. I stand by what I said...."I" was racially profiled at your establishment!
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely regret that your experience at our facility left you feeling this way. Our goal is to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors, and we take concerns like yours very seriously. While this does not seem to reflect the interaction we can see, we understand that experiences can be perceived differently, and we welcome the opportunity to discuss this further. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. As a private facility, we require all non-members to sign in with a government-issued ID for a 15-minute pass to visit Tropical Smoothie Café. This pass does limit access to the Tropical Smoothie Cafe area only, and not the full facility. This policy is in place for all guests and is consistently enforced. Guests can request a guided tour interested in joining Recreation and Wellbeing. We value the chance to address any concerns and ensure all visitors have a positive experience.
Fantastic experience: I am writing this review for the aquatic team at UIC. The whole team is awesome. They listen to you and try to assist you in every possible way. Ira and Monina are very helpful. Ira makes sure to walk to every parent while the little kids are taking swim lessons to listen to their concerns and help them. I am so happy that I found this place. I have an autistic child and they worked hard to match my son with a private instructor who works amazing with him. I can’t say enough. I am just deeply thankful to them.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your experience with our Aquatics team at UIC! We are thrilled to hear that the entire team have been so supportive and attentive to your needs. It’s our priority to create an inclusive and welcoming environment, and we’re especially grateful to have been able to find the right instructor for your family. Your appreciation means the world to us, and we look forward to continuing to provide a positive experience for your family. Thank you for being a part of our community!
Positive experience: Usually clean and okay but sometimes not
Thank you for your feedback! We strive to maintain a clean and welcoming facility, and we’re glad you’ve noticed our efforts. While we acknowledge that there may be times when things aren’t perfect, we are continuously working to ensure a pristine environment for all our members and guests. If you ever notice a specific area that needs attention, please don’t hesitate to let our staff know.
Negative experience: In case you need to cancle your membership. This is an insane cancelation policy! Guys, is money really that important to you? "A $50 cancellation fee will be assessed to members cancelling before the six month minimum requirement. Members may fill out the cancellation form within the month of their six month commitment mark. The same cancellation policy applies; if the cancellation form is not received by the 15th of the month, the member will be charged for the next month. EFT Cancellations received on the 1st - 15th of the month: Memberships will terminate at the end of that month and automatic withdrawals will stop with that month’s payment. EFT Cancellations received on the 16th - the end of the month: Memberships will terminate at the end of the following month and automatic withdrawals will stop after the following month’s payment. Faculty/Staff: Payroll deductions will terminate on the next earliest payroll date. Payroll deductions or EFT will terminate when the appropriate dollar amount has been paid. Once a membership is cancelled, there is no guarantee that it may be reinstated."
We appreciate your feedback and understand that cancellation policies can sometimes be frustrating. Our membership terms, including the six-month commitment and cancellation policy, are outlined during the signup process to ensure transparency. The $50 early cancellation fee helps cover administrative costs associated with setting up memberships. Minimum commitment periods are common across many industries to help maintain affordable membership rates for all. If you have any questions or need assistance with your membership, please feel free to reach out to our team at [email protected]—we're happy to help!
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love this rec center! I’m an alumni from UIC, so it’s awesome to get a discount. I pay around $45 (can’t remember the exact price), but it’s super cheap for all the amenities you get. Everything’s clean, and the staff is really helpful. The only gym in the area that’s even close to this one is FFC, but honestly, this place is way better. - i love the steam room too, but it’s often not working, and they take forever to fix it.
Thank you for your review! We're thrilled to hear that you love the SRF and that our alumni discount makes it even more accessible for you. We appreciate your kind words about our staff, cleanliness, and amenities—it means a lot to us! We understand your frustration with the steam room and truly regret the recent delay in repairs. Unfortunately, some replacement parts took longer to arrive, but everything should now be working to minimize future downtime. We appreciate your patience and hope you continue to enjoy everything our facility has to offer!
Negative experience: Overall good equipment but women’s locker room has roaches the size of a rodent. Very shocking to see especially for the price of the memberships.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We take cleanliness and member comfort very seriously. To date, we have not observed any evidence of cockroaches in our facility, nor have we received similar complaints. However, we are committed to maintaining high standards and will do our due diligence by contacting the university’s pest control vendor for a thorough inspection. We could not locate a membership under your name to call for follow-up. Additional information, such as the specific time and location of your observation, would be incredibly helpful in guiding our inspection. We invite you to reach out to us directly at [email protected] with these details so we can address these concerns appropriately. Thank you for helping us ensure that our facility remains a welcoming and safe space for all members.
Fantastic experience: The gym is pretty good but I'm actually like too strong now so definitely be careful if you want to start going here
Thanks for the heads-up! We do aim to make people *strong*, but it sounds like you might be on the verge of superhero status! We'll keep the 'warning label' in mind for the next members—just in case they’re also destined for greatness. Keep crushing it, and remember, we’re here if you ever need to fine-tune that unstoppable strength!
Fantastic experience: If you're a full-time student, there's no reason for you not to come here. It's included in your tuition. I've had the wonderful opportunity to work out here and lose a substantial amount of weight. There's tons of equipment here for casual lifters, olympic lifters, and everyone in between. If you haven't started your journey yet and have wanted to, let this be day one. If I can do it, you can do it too. Chances are you'll make some friends along the way!
Congratulations on your progress! Thank you for your feedback.
Positive experience: Worth every penny, friendly staff and lively environment
Thank you for the feedback!
Negative experience: It was supper ridiculous when I paid more than $2000 for 6-credit summer classes and they didn’t allow me to enter the gym during summer. They said you needed 8 hours at least as undergrad. I feel so bad for all students who pay expensive tuition like me and get nothing in return here in the summer . This needs to be changed as a public school. Don’t try to make money as any other private intuitions
We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any confusion caused by misinformation from our staff. At UIC, fees are unique to each student based on degree, among other factors, and certain requirements must be met to be assessed the fee for access to Campus Recreation. Our fee specifically is within the 2NLF fee. If at any time this was not assessed or refunded, access to Campus Recreation may be impacted. An email was sent to you to address your unique situation. In general, additional detailed information about tuition and fees can be found with the Office of the Registrar. You can find more information on their website: https://registrar.uic.edu/financial-matters/tuition-and-fees/.
Fantastic experience: Review is for massage with Kevin Banks at the FitWell center. Amazing massage and genuinely caring human being. After the massage I felt like a newborn baby. Just schedule it!
Thank you for the feedback. We're happy to hear it!
Fantastic experience: We take swimming lessons here. The prices are so much more affordable than Goldfish and the teachers are excellent.
Thank you for the feedback!
Fantastic experience: Great place with a lot of facilities.
Fantastic experience: This place is amazing. It has all the equipment and facilities for almost all the sports. The staff is supportive. The ambience and location is great!
Fantastic experience: Had a whirlpool to relax my muscles , rock climbing and workout stuff.
Fantastic experience: Great recreational facility. Definitely worth it!
Thank you for the feedback
Fantastic experience: This gym rocks! From top-notch cardio equipment to dedicated boxing zones, it's got everything to crush your workout. Love the massive rock wall and relaxing sauna too. A student gym that truly covers all bases!
Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: So many machines and not busy when you go early or late.
Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: This place is a fitness enthusiast's dream come true! The state-of-the-art gym equipment, swimming pool, and indoor track cater to a wide range of workout preferences. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the cleanliness and organization of the facility are commendable. Whether you're a student or a visitor, it's the perfect spot to stay fit and healthy.
Thank you for your feedback!
Positive experience: Courts C and D of SRF seem as if they have not been cleaned at all since the start of the fall semester(maybe once?). It is insanely filthy with dirt and dust; it no longer has any grip whatsoever. This is a safety hazard, as it amplifies the chance of serious injuries occurring during play. Simple dry/wet microfiber mopping would make a big difference. The sanitation of this center has dropped overall within the past year. As a regular attendant of the SRF gym I find this disheartening. Overall I would rate 2.5/5 if I could.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Hardwood floors in the facility are dry mopped daily with the basketball courts being done at minimum twice per day. Annually, the floors for basketball courts are sanded and sealed to re-fresh the surface and add longevity to combat how you describe them. This is completed every December during the closure at the end of the month in conjunction with several other annual facility projects to help renew and increase the lifespan of spaces within the facility. Unfortunately with the closure of Courts A and B (see news article here - https://recreation.uic.edu/news-stories/srf-basketball-court-closure/), the extra use of Courts C and D are causing extra dust to accumulate as well as making it more difficult to dry mop additional times throughout the day. If you have any further suggestions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to [email protected] directly. Thank you for being part of our community.
Positive experience: Squat rack can't even get plates on the barbell because a support beam blocks it from being put on
Thank you for brining this up. There is a section of the squat racks where, depending on individual users height, the plate can bump into the support beam. We will look into possible solutions to this issue to ensure the maxium safety and efficient usage of this space. Please always see our staff for assistance as well.
Positive experience: Clean and friendly staff, sometimes too busy on the weight lifting floor and not enough equipment available. Has a disproportionately high number of cardio machines.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. As we plan ahead with our equipment replacement plan, we are evaluating the number of cardio vs stregth machines so that we may align better with industry trends.
Negative experience: I live in the Greektown area and unfortunately this is the only large fitness facility with basketball courts within a 2-mile radius. For $95/mo, it is not a great value. Because UIC operates a complete monopoly, they have no incentive to change. Machines are outdated, dumbbells have likely not been replaced since 2008 (facility opening), everything seems to be broken, and the facility is always dirty. Currently, two of the four basketball courts are unusable and management has not made any attempt to repair the courts in over a month. I have expressed further frustrations to management in the past, and they just seem to always brush things off. When you walk into this facility, you will not feel particularly motivated to work out. It’s a shame that UIC has no interest in improving the experience for students or community members, because a solid rec center really makes a difference in people’s mental health. Ultimately, I do recognize that at the least, it is nice that UIC offers facility access to community members. Also, I realize that the times are tough, and it is probably hard to staff the facility with cleaners, as is. But, end of day, we all deserve better.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We want to acknowledge our efforts in several areas: Facility Comparison: Please see this information about updates to the ongoing and unfortunate issue on the basketball courts: https://recreation.uic.edu/news-stories/srf-basketball-court-closure/. With indoor pools, a climbing wall, several fitness studios, F45 Franchise, and over 26,000 square foot of strength and cardio spaces in addition to six indoor and three outdoor basketball courts between our facilities, we believe we offer the best rates to the UIC and Chicago Community. Included here are some facilities within the area with basketball facilities that appear to offer community memberships for reference. https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/gymnasiums https://ffc.com/club-locations/union-station/ https://www.eastbankclub.com/ Equipment Maintenance and Updates: We actively work on ensuring all of our 200+ pieces of equipment are updated and machines are in proper working order and included within our replacement plan. Dumbbells were replaced in 2018-2019. In 2022-2023 we replaced an entire line of selectorized equipment (17 machines), all barbells and Olympic lifting plates, and the cable cross-over machine in addition to several treadmills. Cleanliness and Sanitation: We are intensifying our cleaning efforts with building service works and student employees, with a particular focus on frequently touched surfaces, mats, and equipment. Your feedback has not gone unnoticed. We appreciate your loyalty as a community member. Thank you for being part of our community. If you have any further suggestions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to [email protected] directly. We genuinely value your input and hope to earn back your confidence.
Negative experience: I go to this gym solely because the location is convenient for me. The alumni membership is too expensive considering the condition of the gym. There are always machines out of order, they are randomly closed, the machines are not wiped down by most people after use and it’s not enforced. The black and red mats are never wiped down and when you do wipe them down before use the wipes are black. The black mats are so old they look like they’re crumbling. The machines are dusty, the revolving entry door is filthy, the showers aren’t regularly cleaned, the locker room lockers are dirty I don’t even like to set my stuff inside. Last week they ran out of clean towels because their machines were broken and they didn’t send out an email about it. This morning they were completely out of WIPES on the gym floor. The gym was packed and there were NO wipes to sanitize machines. That really sent my frustration over the edge. It’s a shame because this gym has the potential to be really nice and the students/paying members deserve better.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the experience you've had, as your concerns are important to us, and we value your input. We acknowledge that there have been challenges with maintaining the condition and cleanliness of the facility, and we're actively working to improve in several areas: Equipment Maintenance: We are actively working on ensuring all machines are in proper working order and removing them to add to the replacement plan if they cannot be repaired. Several of the mats were recently replaced with plans to replace more on a continuous rotation. Cleanliness and Sanitation: We are intensifying our cleaning efforts with building service works and student employees, with a particular focus on frequently touched surfaces, mats, and equipment. Additionally, we will reinforce the importance of members cleaning machines before use to protect yourself but also after to be courteous to others. Our staff has access to replace wipes immediately if they are informed they are out before completing rounds to replace which is done several times per day. Communication: We will improve our communication with members by sending out notifications via email or social media when there are issues like towel shortages. Your feedback has not gone unnoticed, and we are committed to making immediate changes to enhance your experience. We appreciate your loyalty as an alumni member. Thank you for being part of our community. If you have any further suggestions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to [email protected] directly. We genuinely value your input and hope to earn back your confidence.
Fantastic experience: Has everything you need!
Thank you for your feedback
Positive experience: Usually there's dust everywhere. Sometimes the bathrooms smell like they haven't been cleaned in a month. A lot of students don't wipe down their equipment after use. I wish they had more machinery. I'm always waiting for a machine to be open. At least they have a track, basketball hoops and a volleyball net.
We apologize for the less than stellar experience that you have encountered in our facility and appreciate your patience and feedback. As a department, we are actively addressing the dust issues by engaging our building engineers to look at the HVAC system and filters specifically. Additionally, we're enhancing cleaning routines throughout the facility with our building service workers and student staff. Regarding the availability and quantity of equipment, we regularly assess what equipment we have compared to fitness trends and the availability of space within the fitness area. We are looking specifically at ratios of equipment and if it is appropriate for our current patrons needs. Now that classes are back in session, we do have a greater number of patrons in our facility especially at peak hours. Wait times will be higher than over the summer months. Again, we do value your feedback in helping us maintain our facilities. Thank you for being part of our community.
Positive experience: Old and outdated gym. All the bars are slick and management cares more about spending on useless equipment. Spending close to 20k on a Olympic Eleiko platform bars and weights instead of buying new bars. Perhaps management should look at their priorities a little closer.
Thank you for your feedback. We do have a process for all of our equipment from rotation to maintenance to disposal methods and work to keep the best available to the diverse group of student and UIC community members. This also includes a process for prioritizing equipment replacement and spending opportunities. We welcome additional suggestions emailed to [email protected].
Negative experience: Overcrowded opening to closing
Fantastic experience: Simplemente!! Espectacular.
Thank you for the feedback
Fantastic experience: Wish I had discovered this place before my final semester of med school! Incredible facility with a wide array of programs. The sauna/steam room are very well maintained and rival the facilities at much more expensive gyms in the city.
Fantastic experience: Clean facilities and so much activities to be a part of! Student culture is strong and diverse. Friendly staff.
Thank you for the feedback
Positive experience: 4 star rating but minus 1 star because the rec center is closed too much. When it’s not closed some areas are off limits because the sauna or jacuzzi isn’t working. Please maintain the facilities better to prevent issues and increase the open hours.
Thank you for your feedback. We do have regular cleaning and maintenance required to maintain facilities within the Natatorium, including the spa, sauna, and steam room which requires us to close them regularly.
Fantastic experience: Very big nice and clean facility Nice equipment
Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: It's a great place to swim & relax in the hot tub
Thank you for your feedback
Negative experience: 2 stars for the Incredible facility. Has everything you want…except cleanliness. Such a shame to have this place to use and there’s no pride taken in it. It’s literally ALWAYS dirty. Pic doesn’t do it justice.
Fantastic experience: Great place to swim laps and relax in the pool. Has a great gym and fun activities during the year. Worked here for a semester and the summer. Staff is verey friendly and cooperative. Although the facility is free for UIC students, its available to patrons at a cost of subscription. Hygiene is maintained and Covid protocols are followed.
Thank you for your feedback.
Positive experience: Good facility, missing one or two niche pieces of equipment to be perfect. The only downside is the locker room smells worse than an army portable shower facility (if you know, you know). They need to improve ventilation and dehumidification in the locker rooms.
Thank you for the feedback
Positive experience: Great gym, but too crowded to have a work out. Have a timing on using the machines/equipment.
Thank you for your feedback. Our busiest times of day are 3pm-7pm.
Fantastic experience: Love this place,,, AWESOME!!
Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: Great place
Positive experience: Love the climbing wall here it has courses and routes for all skill level. The pool and lockers rooms are rather dirty and sometimes smell absolutely awful. The lifting area upstairs is wayyyy too small for the amount of student UIC has. It is consistently packed and if you want to lift you're going to have to wait for a machine to be available. The workers are nice usually and the smoothie bar is very good but expensive.
Fantastic experience: Well organized, excellent customer services. Highly recommendable place.

Thank you for your feedback
Positive experience: Great membership prices if you are alumni of UIC or UIUC or UIS. 6 months minimum membership duration is the only downside.
Thank you for your feedback. A member can cancel at anytime after their 6th monthly payment. If however a member would like to cancel earlier they certainly can do so by paying the $50 early cancellation fee.
Fantastic experience: Amazing and well equipped!

Fantastic experience: Such a big facility and with so many weight machine options. I love working out here
Thank you for your feedback!
Fantastic experience: The facility is very well kept, clean, and spacious. The only downside as a student is there are hardly ever benches available, since they’re always being used.
Thank you for your feedback.
Fantastic experience: Bigger and better than the SRC. No parking though.
Thank you for your feedback.
Fantastic experience: Very comfortable place to lift and play basketball

Thank you for the feedback!
Fantastic experience: Excellent equipment and facilities!
Fantastic experience: My fav gym for the last 5 years!!!
So glad to see this! Thank you for the feedback!
Negative experience: When covid restrictions were high, we were allowed to bring guests. Now when the city eases up the covid restrictions, guests aren’t allowed....
Hello. Thank you for your feedback. We did originally allow guests for just a few weeks when we were first allowed to re-open. Since we primarily serve the UIC student population, we quickly had to adjust our operation plan in order to best serve our student population/ student members foremost. We are just as hopeful to continue re-opening spaces and offering previous services once again as we continue through the continuous changes in the state, city, and on campus.
Negative experience: Не понравилось.
Fantastic experience: Wish it didn't close so early, sad covid
We are hopeful to expand hours for the new academic year in the Fall!
Fantastic experience: I live in the area and get the alumni rate. This place is the best value for a gym in chicago. I love it.
Thank you for your feedback!
Fantastic experience: One of the best recreation and sport facilities I have ever seen
Thank you for your feedback.
Fantastic experience: Clean, Modern and safe!
Fantastic experience: Very nice facility for training and workout.
Negative experience: It is small. Shallow and you can not dive. People from the gym come to the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, and no shower before. People from outside walk inside without taking their shoes off. It is not neat. Not hygienic place.
Hello. Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately we do not have a diving well at either facility so for safety, we cannot allow any diving. Our pool at the Student Recreation Facility is more leisure with fun features such as a lazy river and bubble tub with three lap lanes additionally. The pool at the Sport and Fitness Center is designed for traditional lap swimming only. I'm sorry your experience was perceived as not neat and unclean. We have standards around clothing/ footwear as well as showering before entering the pool. We would ask that you bring any concerns forward to our employees while inside the facility so they may address immediately. We hope you'll consider giving us another chance soon.
Positive experience: Large facility, some machines are worn out, would not recommend going between 5-7pm, insanely crowded. Staff is great and very helpful. Lighting in the gym is pretty mediocre, lifters know the importance of good lighting.
Thank you for your feedback. We are certainly busiest during the 4pm-7pm hours when students, faculty, and staff are ending their work and class day. We promote etiquette to allow patrons to share equipment between sets and limit time on cardio equipment to 30 minutes during this time as a result.
Fantastic experience: The people there clearly love the horses and are extremely knowledgeable
Positive experience: THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GOOD
Thank you for your feedback!
Fantastic experience: The lifeguard was amazing
Positive experience: how much do I have to pay if I am not a student?
We several different memberships - please take a look here to learn more: https://recreation.uic.edu/memberships/campus-recreation-memberships/. Our staff may also answer questions at our front desk, by calling 312-413-5150, or by email at [email protected].
Negative experience: It's ok place
Thank you for your feedback.
Fantastic experience: The facility is great in value and function for students. Since it's free I highly recommend it as you won't get too much more at another gym.
Good evening. Thank you for the positive feedback. We look forward to you returning time and time again to take advantage of all Campus Recreation has to offer. RECognize Your Potential!
Fantastic experience: Gym. Ping Pong. Badminton. Volleyball. Basketball. Pool. Everything is good about these here. No bad smell. Water is good in the pool.
Thank you for your review!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place to bring your children in the winter. Great swimming lessons!
Thank you for your feedback!
Fantastic experience: This is a great place to workout. The environment is good. No issues.
Thank you for your feedback.
Fantastic experience: I think some of the people posting negative reviews may not realize how great this place is by college gym standards! Enormous, tons of free weights with 4 squat racks, indoor running track, basketball courts, climbing wall, not to mention the aquatic area which is practically a water park (lazy river, hot tub, etc). There’s a gorgeous view of downtown and great natural light. Yes, sometimes during peak hours (4:30-7:30) you have to work around other people to get in your workout. It’s really not as bad as most gyms though. One suggestion: more hand weights in the 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 pound range... there are only a few sets in the entire gym, and people always hide them away for endless amounts of time, because they’re so hard to get your hands on.
Thank you for your feedback! We will certainly investigate more free weights within the 5-15lb range.
Fantastic experience: Awesome rock wall and staff. Great variety of equipment. Decent pool with everything except a diving board.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and tons of options. Gets crowded around early evening but that's to be expected in a college rec center.
Thank you for your review!
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility. Swimming Kickboxing and gym are my favourite. You can also check your fat %. There is a badminton and basketball court inside. Also a quiet place for meditation and yoga. Machines in gym are superb, perfect muscle contraction. They also give towels if you forget yours at home for free.
