Our comment from FitFit United States about Movement Belmont (formerly Planet Granite Belmont):
Movement Belmont, formerly known as Planet Granite, offers an inviting climbing environment popular among locals. The gym features a variety of climbing routes that change regularly, providing challenges for climbers of all levels. Users often praise the friendly and helpful staff who contribute to a supportive community atmosphere. The facility includes a spacious workout area, yoga classes, and clean amenities such as showers and a sauna.
Many visitors appreciate the gym's focus on safety, as belay cards are still required, suggesting a commitment to climbing standards. The community aspect is emphasized, with events like Women's Climbing Night and opportunities to meet new climbers.
However, some users point out that the facilities are dated and in need of renovation, particularly with regards to bouldering sections and overall cleanliness. The lack of a dedicated parking area and potential crowding during peak hours have also been noted as areas for improvement.
Overall, Movement Belmont remains a cherished spot for rock climbing enthusiasts despite some reported inconsistencies in management and facility conditions. It is recommended for both casual climbers and those looking to challenge themselves.
Movement Belmont (formerly Planet Granite Belmont): Opinions

Fantastic experience: Refreshed workout equipments are very welcomed. Also I’m satisfied with the frequency the climbing route changes. I appreciate that the continuous effort of management and staff to make it a better gym.
Fantastic experience: We visited today and enjoyed the routes so much we plan to come back at the end of the week. Like another reviewer we were skeptical based on some of the negative reviews but found them to be completely baseless. I have a gym membership on the east coast as well as just south of the bay here on the west coast. Both of those gyms also cater to the school age crowd between 3-6pm. Best thing to do is just not go during those hours if you are not ok with this. As far the complaint about the staff/gym being very rigid- Good for them! I very much appreciated the questions the front desk posed to us about our climbing experience. I also like that they are one of the few gyms still requiring the wearing of your belay card. Safety was drilled into me in my early years of climbing and it is still as important now as it was then! And lastly, our regular gym here on the west coast also doesn't have heat or AC so this Movment location isn't the only climbing gym with out those amenities. The women's bathroom was very clean and overall large with showers, a sauna and changing area. It was not at all crowded today, perhaps many people are travelling for the holiday but it was nice to have our pick of most anything we wanted to clmb. I really enjoyed the routes here. Many of the harder climbs were challenging without being all crimpers which also made them fun to climb!
Fantastic experience: We love this climbing gym! The staff are all so friendly and helpful and there are fun climbing routes to do! They also have a nice workout area and do yoga classes.
Fantastic experience: Great staff, great route setters, great community
Fantastic experience: Great weight room
Negative experience: My experience with Movement in Belmont was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I went in expecting a supportive environment that would encourage personal growth and self-discovery, but what I got was the exact opposite. From the very beginning, I was forced to stay in a group, even though I expressed multiple times that I preferred to explore on my own. They claimed it was because they didn’t think I was capable of handling things independently, which, frankly, was insulting and completely untrue. The entire experience felt like they were babying me, constantly monitoring my every move, and dictating what I could and couldn’t do. It was supposed to be an empowering experience, but instead, I felt belittled and boxed in. I wanted the freedom to explore at my own pace, on my own terms, but instead, I was treated like I couldn’t handle it. It was just a bunch of condescending nonsense that ruined what could have been a great opportunity. It was clear that their system was rigid and didn’t take individual needs or capabilities into account. This kind of forced group mentality really rubbed me the wrong way because it took away any sense of personal autonomy. If you’re someone who values independence and being trusted to make your own decisions, stay far away from Movement in Belmont. It’s not worth your time, and you’ll only end up feeling frustrated, like I did. One star, and that’s being generous.
Hi Vlogsoryx, I'm sorry to hear your experience didn't live up to you're expectations. We do typically allow members and guests to climb outside of group settings, did you sign up for a class? I'd love to understand more about you're experience, if you'd like to please reach out to [email protected]
Positive experience: Lots of amenities, good amount of top rope real estate. Bouldering is not good though, the layout is terrible. People fall on each other frequently. They have routes going over and around the entryway to one bouldering section which is braindead. With the amount of traffic is at an entry way, there really shouldn’t be any routes there. Hopefully they can figure out their space issue so they can fit more bouldering routes in a safe way, like perhaps expand the bouldering section further out and removing a couple top rope routes.
Negative experience: "8. No intentional falls or "mental practice" falling sessions."
Negative experience: This place has really went down hill in the 2 years I've been coming here. The place becomes a daycare from around 3 to 6 in the afternoon. Usually, you will see one employee with around 10 kids and multiple groups like this. It makes a small bouldering area hard to use, especially when they are blocking whole sections of the bouldering area. The whole place needs a deep cleaning or renovation. The shower rooms are disgusting and don't seem to get cleaned regularly. Most of the towels are nasty and feel like a scrubbing pad. The routes and boulders in this gym change very rarely. It's not uncommon to see routes stay the same for over 2 months. Due to how small the bouldering area is, this really makes for a subpar experience. For a premium gym membership price, this place needs to do better. I can't wait for the new Touchstone gym to open in Redwood City. Maybe then Movement will be forced to do better here. Of their 4 gyms in the Bay Area, this is by far the worst.
Thank you for your feedback, and it's clear that your recent experiences haven’t been up to your or our expectations. We appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns. We have a thriving youth team as well as after school programs and have a limit on our enrollment to ensure that the gym has climbing that is accessible to other guests during these programs. Our peak hours do begin at 4pm and continue until 8pm Monday through Friday. If you are looking for quieter gym hours, I would recommend dropping in early in the mornings! As for your concerns regarding maintenance, we are excited to share that we are working on scheduling a locker room deep clean to help improve our locker rooms. We will continue to work with our janitorial crew to ensure that the daily cleaning improves and know that we've ordered bails of new, larger towels that will start to make it into our rotation. Our focused improvements aren't stopping here. We also are working on a few facility upgrades that will help to make the rest of the experience much more enjoyable in the near future. Stay tunes as we have projects beginning in just a few weeks! I would be happy to discuss any of these in more detail with you. Please reach out to us directly at [email protected] if you have further questions or feedback.
Negative experience: This place is a hard pass. Been to a lot of climbing gyms and this one is a disappointment. Sad it's the only one in it's area. I'll drive a bit farther to go to a better climbing gym. This gym is way overcrowded, and the routes are up way too long for how few of them there are. The routes don't have a realistic rock like movement to them... yes I realize that this is a gym but some gyms have routes that more closely simulate movement on real rock, this is not one of those gyms. The parking is pretty bad too. Lots of young kids At least the people that work there are nice and they provide towels in the locker rooms.
Negative experience: Small area for bouldering Workout equipment is very old and not a lot of room in between equipment. Parking is an issue. No parking lot & have to park on street.
Positive experience: Great gym with a sauna, shower, a large workout area , top rope and boulder. Feels a bit old school and smaller than movement SF and Sunnyvale. But perhaps less crowded.
Negative experience: Uninspiring and old facility that can use some renovation. Bouldering area is small
Negative experience: Absolutely atrocious experience with Movement Gym. They don't even deserve a single star. My 13-year-old endured a nightmarish incident due to the sheer negligence of the coach and management. On her very first day of rock climbing, she was directed to the boulder without any proper instructions from the coach. Scaling the wall about 6 feet, she suffered a horrendous fall when descending, her leg slipping without any guidance from the absent coach. To add insult to injury, the coach was nowhere to be found when she took the fall. The aftermath? A fractured ankle, a bruised forehead, and her glasses sent flying. The gym bothered to call only after the accident, instructing me to pick up my injured daughter. Shockingly, neither the management nor the coach bothered to check on the well-being of the child after such a severe incident. The blatant negligence of the gym inflicted immense pain on my daughter, leaving her bedridden for weeks. I strongly caution all parents to reconsider a hundred times before entrusting their kids to this establishment. .
Negative experience: Bouldering section extremely small, and top rope area is too crowded. This gym is very small in general. The walls are quite ugly.
Thank you for providing your feedback sorry we aren't meeting your expectations if you have any specific feedback feel free to reach out to [email protected]
Negative experience: This review is mostly for bouldering, as I did not top rope. Bouldering section is extremely small, only two areas. Super crowded even at 2-3pm on a Thursday. There's very little room on the mats to sit...very little seating overall. Gym is old and holds feel like they have been up for a very long time. Some holds moved when climbing and didn't feel the most safe. Not the most clean either, but staff are friendly which may be the only redeeming factor.
Hi Michelle, Thank you for providing your feedback sorry to hear we aren't living up to your expectation. Glad to hear you found our staff to be friendly. Our route setters check all the holds during the setting process if you ever feel any are loose please let our team know as we'd like to make sure they are set. If you have any other feedback please feel free to reach out to [email protected] Thank you, Lucas
Positive experience: Good facility, monthly pass is on the expensive side.
Negative experience: No business integrity, raising membership every 6 months. You ends up paying for their loss of business to keep their lights on.
I’m sorry to hear that you find raising rates lacks integrity. Our previous rate increase was on the first of the year 2023, and this new rate will go into effect on the first of the year 2024. As each year operating costs continue to increase, we do expect annual rate increases to continue. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have further questions or concerns.
Positive experience: Good gym, both for bouldering and more traditional exercise. Unfortunately the men’s showers are filthy and in disrepair. I use the showers multiple times a week and have been keeping mental track of some of the dirt, trash, and leaks. In the last 1.5 months, I they haven’t cleaned the shower floors a single time. And the detachable shower head in one of the stalls leaks so bad from the hose that the head is useless. Friends and I have all complained to the staff, who all just say “we’ll make a note”, then nothing is done about it. Come on guys, mopping the shower floors every few days is the least you could do.
Hi Robert, Thank you for the feedback, sorry to hear we haven't been meeting your expectation, this isn't meeting mine either. I've gone in and mopped today, and will be working with night crew to make sure this continues. In the mean time, we'll make sure the day team also keeps up. The shower head issue is a new note to me thank you for bringing this to my attention, I'll order a new one ASAP. Please reach out below if you have any further questions or concerns. [email protected] Best, Lucas
Positive experience: super fun!! pretty busy when i went, but tons of fun
Negative experience: My son applied to join their kids climbing team and was put on the waitlist quite a few months ago. However, each time we inquired about the status/his position in the waitlist, either we were told the team leader wasn't there or please just wait. It works like a black box. Disrespectful and frustrated and puzzling to us.
Fantastic experience: these routes are insanely fun and creative, wish there was better parking, but great friendly staff, excellent facilities, and i couldn’t say more good things i can imagine the chefs kiss for whoever set the pink v3 that moves horizontally and then downwards it’s beginner friendly but is such a fun route that i needed to write a review to say that whoever is the route setter deserves a promotion or a raise
Positive experience: Probably the worst gym in the bay. Local parents treat it as a daycare and staff does nothing about the hordes of children running around. boulders stay up for months at a time, which wouldn't be a problem if there weren't 2 tiny areas for bouldering. Just go to the sunnyvale or santa clara movement instead. EDIT: a lot of things since this review have changed, routes get changed more often, more staff watching out for unsupervised kids, it is still a pretty small gym, but not a lot they can do about that.
Hi Kevin, Thank you for the feedback, both originally and updated. We are always looking to improve, if you do have any future questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to [email protected]. Best, Lucas
Fantastic experience: Interesting boulder questions. Tr is easier than movement Sunnyvale for the same level. Boulder wall is also lower.
Fantastic experience: Amber and dr Ajay were awesom
Fantastic experience: Good place for top rope. Few bouldering walls.
Negative experience: I bought passes for this gym last month but with the storms and current conditions, its been difficult to make it in. I asked for an extension or some sort of solution but the gym was extremely unhelpful, mean, and not understanding with my issues and circumstances. I get that they have a business to run but they don’t bother to listen nor care about their customers. If you’re just looking for a gym to climb at, this seems to be the only one in the area unfortunately. If you want a community, def go elsewhere.
Hi, Trang. I want to apologize for your experience and any possible miscommunication there was surrounding the offering that you purchased. We would be happy to look into a solution for the passes! Would you be able to email [email protected] to continue the conversation? We are looking forward to hearing from you, Cheers!
Fantastic experience: Yoga was nice with Naomi Glad the saunas was working. Climbing is a great workout
Fantastic experience: Very organized, clean, and awesome
Fantastic experience: Love Planet Granite! I thought this was a kitchen counter store whenever I drove past until a friend of mine took me to the Sunnyvale location. I got so into climbing there that I got my own membership, especially since I live walking distance from the Belmont location. Membership includes access to all the gyms (Sunnyvale, Belmont, SF), all the yoga classes, and all the weights and fitness equipment. Sometimes there are a lot of kids that show up for parties and it can be extra challenging to boulder with kids climbing underneath you, but I've found that going early in the morning is best for bouldering when it's nearly empty. Overall great climbing gym.
Fantastic experience: Planet Granite Belmont is basically my second home! Great people, great routes, great place!
Fantastic experience: Awesome little gym with small crowds, great pro shop, and cool climbing. Impressed by the crack system.
Fantastic experience: Much smaller than its sisters Sunnyvale and SF, Belmont makes up for its lack of space with bouldering caves, TRX classes and an all-around chill and friendly vibe. Feels like climbing should - fun!
Fantastic experience: Cool place for groups or family to do a little climbing. Smaller, intimate vibe.
Negative experience: Incredibly dated interior and in dire need of some renovations or deep cleaning. Most of the holds are worn out. The bouldering section is cramped and it's super uncomfortable to be around when it gets busy. The floor mats are worn out, tape coming loose and gives off a subtly unpleasant odor. It's sad that there are no other climbing gyms in the area so there is almost no reason for this place to make any significant improvements
Hello Michael, Thank you for providing your feedback, we appreciate it and are always looking for ways to improve the gym. We are sorry to hear that you have found the bouldering rooms cramped, but we have just opened the new bouldering spray wall upstairs which we hope will help spread out the traffic. We have also just received a shipment of new holds, which will start going up on new climbs around the gym this week! We hope that these, and other renovations planned for the next couple of months, improve your experience at Movement Belmont! If you have any specific questions or concerns, please reach out to [email protected] and the director team would be happy to help however we can.
Positive experience: no parking
Fantastic experience: The best rock climbing vibe. Lots of bouldering and too rope routes. It gets busy on weekends though!
Positive experience: Climbing etiquette is to be desired from several at this gym. Don’t be surprised when someone is suddenly coming up on an intersecting route without warning; if bouldering be aware of aloof people below you. Edited for clarity. It’s a decent gym with neat setting. Sometimes it can be crowded and then it feels a bit cramped.
Positive experience: One of the smaller climbing gyms I've been to. Cool routes and the staff is friendly. Just kinda stuffy in the bouldering areas.
Positive experience: Why is the music always soooooo loud? You can't even be in the gym listening to your own music because the people there feel they are in a night club and there is music blaaaasting all the time. Same when you go to a yoga class, they don't turn the music even for that. Also, the machines are kind of old.
Negative experience: I really want to give this location a better review but I think this place is starting to push on the boundary of acceptable standards in a climbing gym, especially relative to other local Movement gyms. Location is small and old, and let me be clear that I'm not holding my review against that. Over the last few years that I've been there, I noticed that the gym is starting to get into worse shape in terms of wear and tear as well as generally cleanliness. The ventilation is poor and there's no AC, but that's not an excuses for holds and equipment to feel dirty. Keeping the place clean and fresh and not smelling funky on a hot day should just be a norm. No AC is pretty bad for a gym facility. It's unbearable on a really hot day and I feel bad for the staff who are stuck here. Is Movement corporate really so cheap that they can't afford to upgrade, even when they keep increasing the fees? The setting can feel a little slow - I am sure some people prefer that so they can have time to project things, but for a smaller gym with fewer climbs, changing things more frequently to keep it fresh would be nice. The redeeming features here are it's location and staff. It's the only gym in the mid peninsula so people will do to come here under new gyms open in the area. I think the summer coaches/staff can be a bit more attentive when they're teaching classes with young kids. Too many times a kid will run under a climber and it creates a potentially bad situation for everybody.
Hello Calvin, Thank you for reaching out to provide us with feedback! We appreciate feedback as it gives us the chance to learn and grow and continue to improve the gym. We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with the facilities. This summer's heat wave has not gone unnoticed and we have a handful of construction and gym improvement projects starting in the next few months that we hope will address some of your concerns. We are happy to hear that you have had positive experiences with our staff! If you ever have concerns about climbing etiquette or concerns about fall zones, please let staff know and they'll be happy to address the concerns. Thank you again for providing us with feedback, and if you have any additional questions or concerns, please reach out to us at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Awesome space to challenge yourself and meet new people! With exceptional staff and a great atmosphere.
Negative experience: It’s badly organized. The introduction should start at 6 but it didn’t start till 6:30. Additionally, it’s not a welcoming environment, the staff aren’t that friendly.
Positive experience: It's a nice little climbing gym. If you have some time to kill or close by check it out. It can get super crowded in the afternoon. Bouldering is not as crowded as the top rope where you have to wait your turn to climb. Bouldering classes in the afternoon will overwhelm the bouldering walls. Parking can be hard. I'd say it's okay to park in the auto shop lot when it's past their closing time. If you can't find street parking there's parking at the shopping center a block over.
Hi, Alex. Thanks for checking out our gym and being a part of the community. We are a small space, but we try to make sure that everyone can find a climb or have a place to workout. I appreciate your feedback regarding how impacted the bouldering are gets during classes and wanted to let you know that this is something we are looking to address as we move into the fall. Thank you!
Negative experience: Not a welcoming environment. The staff are particularly unfriendly. I feel uncomfortable coming here and I only come here because I live nearby…
Positive experience: Lots of places to climb on the walls and good gym equipment upstairs.
Fantastic experience: Awesome space to challenge yourself and meet new people! With exceptional staff and a great atmosphere, this is the perfect stop on your journey home from work or out for an adventure.
Positive experience: Not a very big gym, but they have two bouldering caves and a decent variety of top rope and lead sections. The workout area is large and a variety of different equipment
Fantastic experience: The place where my wife and I learnt how to, and is our spiritual home for indoor climbing. Wonderful staff, small enough to be comfortable, big enough to keep you challenged. If you're looking to try it out, just do it, it's amazing and if you're seasoned you'll have a great time here.
Fantastic experience: Truly a nice place. I've been to other indoor climbing venues and the big difference is that here they don't take shortcuts: no automatic systems, you have to make your figure eight knot and use the provided gri-gri's as belay devices. I am not a great fan of the gri-gri (I like the "robot" better) but I really appreciate they try to stay close to what one would experience on a real mountain. I have seen they have some treadmills in the mezzanine but I didn't go there. The personnel is most caring.
Fantastic experience: Everyone is super friendly and helpful, had the best time rock climbing! Thank you
Fantastic experience: Excellent staff and facilities. This is the original Planet Granite location and they make it work with the space they have. Always a good experience here.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, opens nice and early.
Fantastic experience: PG Belmont is my favorite gym to go to. It may be small in comparison to the other gyms, but it has such a welcoming vibe that I always want to go back. Amazing and friendly staff, clean facilities, great climbing, and a gym with squat racks! Who could ask for more ☺️ love you, PG Belmont!!
Hi Aria, Thank you for the wonderful feedback! We're glad that you enjoy using our gym and feel welcome. We hope to see you around the gym soon!
Fantastic experience: Great gym, friendly staff. Routes are reset regularly.
Hi Michael, Thank you for the positive feedback. See you around the gym!
Fantastic experience: Best vibes of all the Planet Granite's in the bay. Less crowded during rush hour despite being the smallest. Also the people that climb here have more respect for personal space and safety vs the other locations
Negative experience: Bouldering problems in both the beginner and intermediate grades (no idea about higher grades) are pretty heavily sandbagged for commercial gyms, including the other PG gyms in the area (Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, SF). I would absolutely not take any newer friends here; the problems are consistently 1-2 grades higher than at any other gym I've been to in the US (~dozen) and are mostly inaccessible to beginners. The boulder area is small, so you feel the lack of accessible problems keenly. Can't speak for top rope. Facilities seem clean, if generally small. No dedicated parking. I'd personally make the effort to drive the extra 20-30 min to another PG instead of this one.
Positive experience: My biggest complaint is the lack of a dedicated, reasonably secure parking lot for this gym. Street parking is very limited on side streets and at times dangerous on El Camino. It's enough of a hassle to keep me from coming back here. Is there anything being done to address this?
Negative experience: I love climbing and it takes a lot for me to dislike a climbing gym. I tried very hard to like this gym since it’s the closest to me but failed. The tiny, dark, crowded bouldering walls, limited style of routes, the lead climbing walls mixed with top roping routes, staff giving belay tests without consistent standards, etc. Some staff also seem to be a bit snobby about climbing. While my partner and were trying to take a test I wanted to wait for a 5.8 that was occupied (I was helping my partner get tested at the end of my climbing session and I was already tired). The staff pointed out that a 5.10a was available and I said “I prefer something easier since your rule allows me to pick the route”. And he said “but it’s a 5.10a”. His attitude was not the best way I’ve imagined to end my climbing session. Also ironically, after my partner passed the test, the staff told me if I were taking the test that day he would’ve failed me (I was already lead certified in the same gym). You expected the gym to have some consistent standard on certifying people… A climbing gym is where I disconnect from work and enjoy myself after work but I often feel frustrated in this gym. Switched my membership to touchstone and feel VERY happy with Dogpatch and Pacific Pipe.
Positive experience: Really nice gym with nice staff. Clean and well surprisingly well equipped with workout equipments considering it is a climbing gym.
Fantastic experience: Wow, good vibes here. Fill out your waiver online and you'll be squared away on arrival
Negative experience: I started climbing arround 4 years ago at planet granite in Belmont and since then, I have climbed at dozens of different gyms in the bay and in colorado. I also work at a climbing gym and I have a fair amount of route setting experience. I believe that I have the right qualifications and experience in the climbing industry to say that the setting at this gym has significantly diminished. I know this gym is hard for the grade (way harder than it should be for a commercial gym) however, I’m not talking about the grades when I talk about the quality of the sets. For the people that do actively set at this gym, please dear god focus on handedness for all routes and focus on flow for your top rope and lead routes. I climbed the entire boulder set yesterday through about the v6 range and I can confidently say that there was not a single problem I would have been proud to have put up myself. Very few problems felt like they were forerun and many of the problems were extremely hight depended. Now about the grades. I do not know if you’re doing consensus grading and that might be the problem or if you guys just decided that you want to be 2 grades harder than anything in the area. The gym that I climb at the most in colorado is considered to be fairly “sandbagged” in terms of indoor climbing. Some v5s and a lot of v6s climbed like v7s in my gym back home. Your roped setting is also significantly harder than it should be. I have quite recently flashed 2 12as outside in poudre canyon in colorado and I struggled to top rope 11cs in your gym. Now for the higher grades, this doesnt really matter but for people that don’t climb and are in good shape, v2s should be accessible. I shouldn’t have to watch a group of friends project v1s and v2s because the movement is convoluted and too difficult for the grade. All in all, the setting is just out of wack in this gym. If you own this gym, I highly recommend that you REQUIRE all of your setters to take at least a. Lvl 1 route setting cert course. After observing the current state of the gym, it kinda just seems like u don’t care. I mean if anyone wants to climb in Redwood City, San Carlos, or belmont, you guys are the only option. If there were any other option for climbing in the area, this gym would not succeed. You guys have the wall, the holds, and the facilities required for a great climbing gym. All you guys need is good setting and this gym could be great. Please make the gym great
Hi Chaz, We would love to talk with you more about your experience. Please reach out to the Gym Director at [email protected] and the Director of Routesetting for the West Coast at [email protected] so we can either set up a time to walk through the gym or speak further about your feedback.
Fantastic experience: I don't want to post to attract more people since this place is simply great!
Hi Вован, thank you for your feedback! We think so, too! If you ever want to give us more details, please reach out to our Gym Director, Grace, at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Great rock gym with a homey feel. Stark contrast from sunnyvale- Solid weight/machine facilities as well as a good rope section. Boulders are very stout and well set here, but the other area gyms have better bouldering areas. gym does have 2 moon boards though
Fantastic experience: Really good service and good bouldering walls
Fantastic experience: Smaller then the other gyms. Mostly top rope and belaying. Only two sections for bouldering
Fantastic experience: Really fun place! Not too much people which is a good thing because of covid. Staff is friendly and the old theater setting his a cool nostalgic feel.
Fantastic experience: Good atmosphere, Nice Staff, good selections of climbing and workout equipment My go to gym.
Negative experience: I imagine for the poeple who climb this is a good place. But the facilities are so out of order and maintainance.
Hello, We are sorry to hear about your experience with our facility. Feedback is important to us and we would love to talk with you more about this. If you would like, please reach out to Grace, the Gym Director, at [email protected].
Positive experience: Nice place for climbing, but bouldering section was pretty small. Also, there was a youth bouldering team that came in midway through my shift and took over one bouldering section. The coach was apologetic and encouraged me to ask them to move if need be, but there were just too many people in that bouldering section. Would be nice to know that that will be happening when you register for a timeslot.
Thank you for the feedback. We are glad that our coach was inviting you into the space they were using because we strive to share the climbing areas with the rest of our community. Please call the front desk at (650) 591-3030 and we are happy to share our current team practice schedule.
Negative experience: I love Planet Granite and was very excited when they opened their doors after the COVID shutdown. They presently require wearing a mask for safety which I was happy to do. However, I do have some personal safety concerns, detailed below. 1. During a very active belay, my wife's mask slid lower on her face and did not cover her nose. While still belaying someone came over and berated my wife for not wearing a mask properly. This distraction resulted in me being off belay at height for a substantial period in time. 2. While weightlifting with my mask on I had so much difficulty breathing that I briefly lost my vision. This was during my warm-up sets and hasn't happened before in may years of lifting. As much as it pains me to say this (I do love Planet Granite) I cannot recommend going at the present time. It's not safe, with or without a mask.
Hi Nate, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry you and your wife didn’t have a positive interaction with our community regarding our ask to always wear a mask while in the facility. Climbing is inherently dangerous and there shouldn’t be distractions that affect one’s ability to fully focus on the belaying of their climber. Exercising while wearing masks is something new that many of us will need to make adjustments for if we want to continue exercising in the gym under current conditions. While it can be uncomfortable and feel restrictive, we are requiring masks to minimize the spread of Covid-19 as advised by our local health authorities. This means that masks are required to be covering the nose and mouth at all times. If masks breaks are needed, we encourage folks to take breaks outside until they feel comfortable returning to the facility. I'd love to talk with you more about how you both can enjoy the gym by feeling comfortable and welcome using our spaces during this time. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our Gym Director, Grace, at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Really good service and good bouldering walls
Fantastic experience: Large gym area and fun bouldering routes, washrooms were large and clean
Thanks for the great review. We’re glad you enjoy our routes and clean facilities!
Fantastic experience: Really nice gym. It’s smaller than some of the other Bay Area gyms, but it’s really still a great gym. More of a cozy gym than a power house or tech gym. It’s wonderful for first time visits, occasional, or the regular. If you’re a v11+ climber, you still have an occasional boulder and there is always the Moon board up stairs, but otherwise you might be underwhelmed. It currently 2019, has a wonderful community (but this is always changing). The training facility is great, I have met a number of non-climbers using the facility as well. They have lots of free weights, a large number of cardio machines, and a few classes like yoga and ab-centric stuff. Staff is friendly and courteous. Parking kinda sucks since they have no dedicated lot and you park a block away. Been climbing here since 2017 and have really enjoyed it.
Hi Rebbaz, We're glad you're enjoying all that Planet Granite Belmont has to offer! We'll see you around the gym!
Negative experience: Not flexible at all. Do not recommend. Drive to another gym if you have any other option.
Hi Paul, We are sorry to hear you had a negative experience with us, we strive to accommodate all climbers. If you would like to share your experience further to help us improve our customer experience, please reach out to our Gym Director, Grace, at [email protected].
Negative experience: I came in to buy a gift card. I did the long slow line and personnel was fixated on me filling up the waiver prior to selling me the gift card. I filled up their waiver, did the long line again and the blue hair person continued to insist that I made a mistake, which was only in the check mark about the type of my government issued ID. He mentioned that I need to fill out another waiver. Wait I have been there for 20 min already and haven’t been able to buy a gift card yet. I left. The lost a costumer. Don’t go there unless you have an hour to fill up and refill their waiver.
Hi Adriana, We appreciate your feedback about your experience. We apologize about how long it took for you to try to purchase a gift card. We did not achieve our goal in serving you in a timely manner. If you are still interested in purchasing a gift card, they are available online here: https://planetgranite.com/gift-cards/ If you’d like to talk more about your experience, please reach out Grace, our Gym Director, at [email protected].
Positive experience: Been coming to PG Belmont off and on for well over a decade now and while it's a great place in many ways, the way things are run has me wishing someone else would open a new gym in the area. Pros: The climbing community here is great whether it's an open climb night or just hanging out in the bouldering room on a quiet sunday. Routes are fun and varied, staff working the floor is always chill. While it gets busy on a weekday evening, there's usual a route to be found pretty quick and off peak times are great. Cons: The classes. Events, birthdays, summer kids clubs are always a pain to in any gym but PG seems to really be good at scheduling stuff at all the wrong times. Lately that's extended to the workout area where class instructors will take over every pull-up bar for a half hour straight, run a class dominating floor space for twice that right in the middle of peak time. Not the PG community spirit at all. Last but not least is the temperature controls. The bay area is getting warmer and warmer and while running AC is not helping the stem climate change, there's a reason other gyms use it or good fans or something to respond so the gym doesn’t end up warmer inside than out on a summer day. Fees rise, services should improve. Fun place, good climbing but the place is too busy and too dated for the costs. High time for more options in the Peninsula to spread out and update.
Hi Ted, We’re glad to hear that you enjoy our routes, our community and our staff! We understand that sharing the fitness space among our different communities is important. We strive to ensure that everyone can participate and enjoy all areas of the gym. We would love it if you could reach out so we can talk about how we can improve our usage of the space. During the summer months, we are working to increase airflow and cool the higher and hotter areas of the gym. Please feel free to contact Grace, our Gym Director, at [email protected] if you would like to discuss this further.
Positive experience: Nice climbing and bouldering facility. The locker room was clean and tidy!
Fantastic experience: They have a great balance of roped climbs and boldering.
Positive experience: Not a bad gym. I can only speak for the bouldering sections, as I didn't have a belay partner when I went. They made pretty good use of wall space, and the grades were actually comparable to what you would expect when climbing outdoors. Most gyms inflate the grade in my opinion. They didn't have a lounge area or anything, but that may be due to limited space. They have a very nice locker room with sauna. The yoga studio and gym seemed pretty decent. I think there were also two system boards.
Positive experience: My go to gym for the past year. The staff is always friendly, not too crowded at night like 24 Hour Fitness, and the bouldering / top rope routes change often enough. Saturdays can get busy with families , but besides that it's great. Definitely would give it a try if I were you. The best small climbing gym around. Update : The newer staff is not as friendly and welcoming as the old start from a few months ago. And the men's shower drain is normally clogged from people's hair which can stay there for a few days at a time.
Fantastic experience: There's a reason I come back every time: the staff are amazing, equipment is great, routes are fantastic! Never gets old
Fantastic experience: Great routes and convenient parking in nearby shopping plaza
Fantastic experience: Great climbs!
Fantastic experience: Even when it's busy there is space to climb and workout.
Fantastic experience: Great climbs. Much more difficult than Mission Cliffs in SF. Good stuff!
Fantastic experience: I love Plane Granite! This gym is way less busy than the Sunnyvale one.
Fantastic experience: Great variety of routes here for bouldering and top-rope. It can get a little crowded at peak hours, but it's really nice early and late. The staff are all super friendly!
Fantastic experience: Routes don't change as often as sunnyvale, but never gets as busy! Plenty of parking on 43rd just a block over
Fantastic experience: Has all the amenities, but it's pretty expensive gym.
Fantastic experience: The staff is cheerful, helpful and friendly. The facilities are clean. The vibe is in obnoxiously fun.
Fantastic experience: While this planet granite might not have the newest facilities I love the routes and bouldering problems, they change them frequently and do a great job of ensuring there's variety.
Fantastic experience: A real challenge fun and exciting
Fantastic experience: Great staff, fun climbing. Good place to learn and train
Positive experience: The oldest and smallest Planet Granite in the Bay area, with the shortest bouldering walls and fairly cramped spaces. The gym just remodeled its bathrooms, thankfully, which used to have dirty floors and showers that often clogged with frothy hairballs. But it's the only climbing gym in the peninsula so you really don't have much of a choice. :P
Positive experience: It's like super noisy. Their fans are loud then their music is loud so you can't hear anything. Rating is all over the place. I come every few years.
Fantastic experience: There's a reason I come back every time: the staff are amazing, equipment is great, routes are fantastic! Never gets old
Positive experience: The equipments are a bit old and out dated but other than that it's a ton of fun!
Positive experience: Small gym, but fun. I really enjoy the events like Women's Climbing Night and Singles and Swingers that allow you to meet new climbers at the gym!
Negative experience: If I could give 0 out of 0, I would. This is merely a money making business. It lacks any higher purpose. If you want to rock climb for any other reason (care about nature, or other human beings sharing space with you on this planet, for instance) look elsewhere. A more fitting name for this business is “Planet Ego”
