Our comment from FitFit United States about Graves Fitness Center:
Graves Fitness Center, located in Fort Belvoir, is a popular gym offering a range of facilities and equipment suitable for various fitness levels. The center features:
- Weight machines and free weights
- Cardio equipment including stationary bikes and treadmills
- Basketball and racquetball courts
- A sauna and steam room
- Climbing wall and free cycling classes
Many users appreciate the cleanliness and well-maintained environment of the facility. The gym also offers the advantage of free access for active-duty military members and their dependents, with 24/7 access by scanning a military ID. Reviewers frequently comment on the friendly and helpful staff.
However, some users note drawbacks, including the limited availability of specific equipment for Olympic lifting and a somewhat crowded atmosphere during peak hours. Additionally, the gym's weekend hours have been a point of contention, as it is often closed on weekends and has reported equipment that could use updates. Despite these concerns, many agree that it is a great place to work out, especially for those with military access who want to save on gym fees.
Overall, Graves Fitness Center remains a solid choice for fitness enthusiasts, particularly those looking for a cost-effective option with decent facilities.
Graves Fitness Center: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Weight machines, free weights, stationary bikes, treadmill, and basketball court.
Fantastic experience: Attended a spin class and it was awesome!!
Positive experience: Sufficient equipment for general strength training. Not great for Olympic lifting or CrossFit (Specker gym is better for that). Sauna works. Big lockers. Open bay showers.
Positive experience: Nice gym small but nice
Fantastic experience: Decent gym. Racquetball and basketball on site
Fantastic experience: Graves Gym is the sixth gym I have went to and experienced since moving to the Washington DC area. Admission is free for active duty and dependents. They have sauna, steam room, cardio machines, free weights, attached weights, a climbing wall, free cycling classes, and low priced yoga classes there. There is 24/7 access inside the gym by scanning your military ID. Traffic seems to pick up around 3 PM on a weekday. The gym did not seem too crowded though. I noticed most of the gyms on base like this one are frequented by active duty soldiers more than spouses & dependents. If you have free access to these gyms on base and want to avoid unnecessary traffic, gas mileage fees, and paying for gym membership, this is the best plan to select. I never have to wait in line to use a cardio machine or attached weights. All the machines and equipment in this gym and other gyms are up to date. There is a 30 minute time limit on cardio equipment in the Graves Center. I think it is to ensure everyone has access to the cardio machines. By 3:38 PM, the gym traffic went down fast quickly, so I didn’t have any issues. Most of the cardio machines were unoccupied, and I usually do five or more miles on cardio machines at the gym. The Graves gym seems to have the most cardio machines among all the free gyms I have went to nearby, so I think this will be my go to place for working out regularly for cardio.
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout, had everything you need to workout. Clean!!!
Fantastic experience: If you are looking to lift on Belvoir go here. Specker is for crossfit and Body Shop is not really body shopping anything.
Positive experience: Good place to get a sweat on. Wish it was opened weekends.
Negative experience: What kind of a military base doesn’t have any weight room on base? What kind of military base doesn’t have any gyms open on the weekend? This is truly the most shameful, pathetic gym I’ve ever been to on a military base anywhere in the world. It’s tons of treadmills (just run outside), and 2 cable machines.
Positive experience: Was expecting much more for this area.
Positive experience: The staff is good. They have some new equipment.
Fantastic experience: Every time I go, Graves is maintained properly and clean, small place for a gym. They move the equipment around sometimes so it can be a slight maze when that happens of course. Also, the staff is always pleasant
Positive experience: I've been there a couple times and I've noticed that it gets crowded at certain times, like an hour before closing and when people get off work so I advise if your going there to do it in the morning or lunchtime
Negative experience: Why isn't this gym on an Army base open on Saturday? Unbelievable
Positive experience: Wish it was 24 hours.
Positive experience: It’s free nice court, not enough equipment and unless you go at 4 am the gym is too packed to get your workout in
Positive experience: Probably the smallest gym I’ve been in on a military base. Lacks machines, hours aren’t the best (closes at 1900), and pretty tight. But hey, it’s free.
Negative experience: Great staff, but unmaintained equipment and condemned climbing walls. Nothing to be missed here. Specker is much better, but barely. They are closed throughout the entire holiday, when mental health is at it’s worst. This gym checks the block for Department of Defense so that they can tell America they care about Service Member mental health. They are only open on weekdays at 5 am when SMs have PT and close at 7pm right after SMs get off work. God forbid anyone has kids or other responsibilities.
Fantastic experience: love it
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out and shoot hoops only complaint is that it is closed on weekends.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym! Clean and well-equipped.
Fantastic experience: This gym has everything you need for working out. Body building equipment like free weights and machines and all sorts of cardio equipment. If you have access to fort belvoir army base, this gym is a definite place to go to instead of paying gym membership outside. Check the schedules though coz they adjust it from time to time.
Positive experience: The gym is big, the area devoted to weightlifting is small.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym! Super friendly and helpful staff, great equipment and free wifi.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic Gym always getting my work out here, its for the military Retirees, dependants and possibly guest oft the military person stationed there.
Positive experience: Decent place but not much in the way of machines
Negative experience: No outside bathrooms, lawn needs attention. Good parking options.
Negative experience: Need those locker rooms open I need you to allow retirees access, open showers and locker rooms open! No further on this active duty only manure!!
Positive experience: Has good equipment for basic workouts. Perfect for your every day gains ♀️
Positive experience: Standard Army gym. Hit or miss if everything works
Negative experience: About time the gym is open for retirees even if limited hours.
Positive experience: Has lots of free weights, no pre weighted barbells and no lift machines. Has racks and cable islands
Positive experience: Plenty of space, but no machines. Mostly just free weights and cardio equipment, with two cable towers.
Fantastic experience: speak to the front desk and ask about working out after hours. pretty decent place that provides a great area for working out and plenty of equipment
Fantastic experience: Has everything required for ACFT and is available to DoD dependents
Negative experience: It's a great Gym! But I don't go there for now because you have to wear your masks at all times and I don't think that's ethical. Walking between Machines is cool but working out that requires deep breath and you have your mask in the way makes it a bit of a challenge.
Positive experience: Nice spot to work out. Not too busy whenever I visit.
Positive experience: It's a smaller gym. It has most equipment but lacks stairmaster.
Positive experience: It's a fine gym. It gets the job done. And that's about all... A lot of the equipment is outdated. They are frequently replacing old seats and things are out of order for a while. (They did recently make one of the rooms a crossfit room... with 3 additional squat racks, kettle bells, trap bar, etc. which is appreciated.) Overall, it's an old building that just reads kind of tired. Definitely not even close to one of the best military gyms I've been to.
Positive experience: Busy most morning and evening
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out
Fantastic experience: Nice gym
Positive experience: Very dated equipment.
Positive experience: Great place to workout
Positive experience: Graves Gym My rating: 3/5 Coconuts Overall it is a good gym for what you need to do. Anything more well there are other on post gyms for what you want to work on specifically. Pros: 1. It's free, since I'm now a 100% DAV I can use any MWR Gym free! 2. I like the weightroom, it needs some updates but it's still good for now (2 years they need to replace a few things). 3. 24 Hour Access 4. Wall and rock climbing is available. Cons: 1. A further drive to it 15 mins depending on traffic. 2. If post closed down due to winter weather you can miss a workout day or even a week (rarely a week but still). 3. Mirrors are important when one is making sure their form is right. They are too far from where they'd normally be. 4. Parking lot is not well lit. Not bad, but if I were to be honest, while the gym is okay, the most important part for me is the parking lot. Since it's a 24 hour gym, I believe there should be lights that could lit up the place a bit more. It is next to the MP Station which is cool, but a well lit lot and maybe a guard presence would be awesome. That will definitely bring up my rating.
Positive experience: Its a good gym, some of the equipment is out of date however, it is 24/7. Can't beat that.
Negative experience: Doesn't win the prize for worst gym on a military installation, but it comes close. Old equipment, and little of it. There's also black mold all through-out the place.
Positive experience: There are a lot of Gyms out there, but considering that you get to access some decent equipment without paying any fees I think that this is a good choice. There is a good amount of weight and cardio equipment to use but during peak hours like before working hours, lunch, and after work it can be hard at times to find a machine you can use without waiting. I see some old reviews mentioning towels, they still don't offer towels but they do have sanitizing wipes to use to wipe the machines down. Also make sure you bring your own lock if you are going to use the locker room because they don't provide those as well.
Positive experience: Great gym, has 24 hour access and good equipment. However some of the equipment is outdated and many are out of use. I appreciate thought, the 3 indoor racquet ball gyms and very spacious separate basketball gym. There are also tennis, baseball, soccer and track facilities outdoors.
Fantastic experience: For all fitness levels. Always busy.
Fantastic experience: Love it
Fantastic experience: Awesome
Fantastic experience: Best fitness center on post.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, great equipment.
Fantastic experience: Come on and pump some iron.
Fantastic experience: While this gym isn't like this fancy pricey gyms off base, it has everything you need. They have free weights, weight machines, all of the cardio machines, racquet ball courts,a sauna a d steam room. They also have free spin classes on Thursday nights. And best of all, it is free.
Positive experience: Its a closed obstacle course, dont get too excited. Packed in the am, good amount of cardio equipment.
Positive experience: Good place, just always packed around 15:00 to 18:00 so I recommend going at 19:00 for better work outs. It's also pretty small but it works.
Positive experience: Been working on the same hot water issue since 2014
Fantastic experience: Come on and pump some iron.
Positive experience: Nice facility with plenty of equipment to get a good work out.
Positive experience: For such a large bldg, small room for weight lifting and etc. focus is more on Cardio, but friendly staff, large locker rooms and small sauna.
Negative experience: Weekend times are adjusted "for covid" but it only allows for 2 - 1¹/²hrs sessions of total workout time per day and cram packs the place. Never can get on all equipment prescribed for a workout routine. Also, could adjust weekday hours to close on time (2100) and get another whole 1¹/²hr session in instead of closing at 1830. Pod spacing isn't accurate; 1 pod says 4 and same size pod right beside it says 2? When gym area itself is so packed people are working out on top of each other. Also, if busy can take 5-10mins waiting in line to sign in with same pen everyone else uses I may add and then you can workout. Shortens already sort minimum 90min time allotted. No way to get a prescribed 90min workout in. I've tried mentioning to staff but they say they are following "covid instructions" ♂️
Positive experience: Good place to workout
Positive experience: Good selection of equipment. I usually get the workout in I intended. Friendly, helpful staff.
Positive experience: Clean facilities. Haven’t been there when it’s super busy, so access to equipment was not a problem
Negative experience: It s a gym with pool..... need to be updated.
Fantastic experience: Rock walls, newly resurfaced basketball and racquet ball courts, machines are always in good shape. Friendly staff and clean locker rooms, all you can ask for in a gym
Fantastic experience: Great gym! Clean, lots of equipment and well maintained.
Fantastic experience: It is a fitness center located on Fort Belvoir it's primarily for military ID card holders great facility has a lot of amenities especially a steam room and a dry sauna
Fantastic experience: 24x7 operating hours, just have to register.
Fantastic experience: Plenty of equipment and they maintain everything very well!
Fantastic experience: Usually crowded after new year
Fantastic experience: Nice racquetball courts, easy to reserve a time.
Fantastic experience: Large, spacious, and clean. Three racquetball courts, two spin rooms, huge basketball court, p plenty of weights and cardio equipment. Everything a gym should have.
Positive experience: For what it is it's decent. With that said it does lack some features that other bases have. Hopefully in the future they will upgrade and update the gym to better serve the community.
Positive experience: If you visit Belvoir bring your gym stuff, Thee hang out for the healthy or wana-bees. Racquetball Mon(AB)-Wed(Ba)-Fri(BC)&Sat(ABC). Doubles & Cut Throat
Positive experience: Great all around gym
Positive experience: Great job of being prepared to take of the troop and DOD Worker
Positive experience: Great MWR gym.
Positive experience: 24 hour access has been down more often than it's been up. Generally at least one piece if equipment is broken. Lifting area equipment is basically on top of one another. Body shop is the superior gym if you're on base.
Positive experience: Needs an upgrade to the library
Negative experience: The place wouldn't be terrible if they didn't make it 24 hours and 90 percent of the time it's closed! There is always a sign that says "Door is down for maintenance". Just go back to normal hours of operation instead of these lies that are fed to me which stunt my gains.
Positive experience: Convenient but Needs Work
Negative experience: Small gym, pretty crowded, go to the body shop instead if on base. Only good part about it is it is free for military personnel.
Positive experience: Gym equipment is a bit dated, but has everything you need.
Positive experience: It has all the basics. Zero frills.
Negative experience: The equipment is old, the weight room is small and packed mostly with cardio machines instead of weights, no matter the time seems to always been overly crowded and highly suffocating. More than anything there's a lot of people standing around having conversations and a lot of making people feel self conscious by being creeps and just staring..
Positive experience: Too many people, too few pieces of equipment and room, and really just a safe space for those who are looking to not get "out" of shape not to get "in" shape. Friendly staff and sanitary.
Positive experience: Good indoor basketball court and racketball is available as well.
Fantastic experience: Nice racquetball courts, easy to reserve a time.
Negative experience: The worst. The dirtiest, tiniest, oldest, most crowded worst.
Positive experience: My winter boots got stolen from the ladies locker room around 11:30am yesterday (Jan 26, 2016). There is a thief in the locker room.
