YMCA Cape Cod: Opinions
Fantastic experience: I’ve been really happy with my experience at the Barnstable YMCA! I have been going on a daily/weekly basis for the past year. The child watch service is fantastic — my kid loves it, and I can enjoy my workout or school work worry-free. It’s so COST EFFICIENT because the child watch is already built into my membership!!! The 2 staff members will watch my child for up to an hour and a half everyday. The gym equipment is top-notch, and the spacious atmosphere makes it a pleasure to train without feeling cramped. I notice all of the staff is quite friendly and easy to talk to, Chris; at the front desk is always a kind, bright smiling face. I also appreciate how judgment-free the environment is, making it a welcoming place for everyone. A special shoutout to Joshua, the trainer, who is incredibly knowledgeable and always offers helpful advice and exercises to improve my workouts. Overall, a great experience at the YMCA, and I highly recommend it! This is especially helpful for younger families who want exceptional care for their little ones in addition to having time for self- care as a parent or caregiver.
Fantastic experience: I got a one month pass for the Cape Cod YMCA in West Barnstable while visiting from Quebec for 5 weeks and I couldn't be happier. Love the pool, the gym-training room, the kindness of the staff. I wasn't sure, given several bad reviews; but, so far, my experience is top notch and I plan to train there several times per week, when there is too much wind to paddle or cycle.
Negative experience: These employees here are the rudest and the most unprofessional especially on the phone. I told the front desk I’m looking for a swim schedule for my 7 year old. She ask me what’s a 7 year old doing here?? Really. I could help she was annoying by her tone on the phone when I was just asking general questions. This place is a joke. With there was some other pool areal in Hyannis becz this place has literally gone to the dogs!!!!!
Fantastic experience: Great place for whole family & swimming lessons with awesome teachers My granddaughter loved it
Negative experience: Would not go back. The front desk employee was very rude when we walked in and signed in with a different YMCA membership. The workout room/ weights were very outdated and dirty compared to other YMCA’s. Also the workout room was very stagnant with no air flow.
Negative experience: We have signed up for 1 week of Camp in Harwich with the expectation to attend entire summer, but wanted to see how the child (7yr old) adopts. 3 days later we dropped it as we as the parents were worried about her safety and the kid felt super uncomfortable. She fell and hit her stomach. The camp lead calls parents and tells us she has belly ace and probably gassy.... she keeps a kid waiting an hour before calling us, then calling us with no urge until we picked her up and got the whole story straight. She had a bruise and felt nauseaous. We communicated back to the lead and superiors about this huge miscommunication which was not ok. They blamed the child not showing her injuries - of course not, as she was not comfortable around her who has been yelling at kids to hurry all day long and not making this relaxing environment. For heavens sake this is a camp and not military. However, we didn't make a huge deal as we were still understanding that things happen and just asked for a refund of the rest of the day and a half that she did not attend as noone of us felt safe returning there. There have been 3 weeks of email threads and us being tossed from one 'manager' to another and guess what- no response! What type if business this is? Will we ever refer thos place or go to? Never! Please protect your kids especially from Harwich YMCA camp! My family have been a members of Ymca for decades and here we are treated as another number.
Negative experience: Management is horrible. No rules nothing. Man's look room is disgusting.
Negative experience: If you just want swim lessons for a very young child you would do just as well to get a cheaper pool membership and take them there once a week or so to get comfortable in the water. We signed up for baby swim lessons here and have been very disappointed. Lessons are about 25 minutes long, showers usually are ice cold, and there is very little actual instruction. Classes are often canceled and pool often closed with no notification. Have asked repeatedly to be added to the pool closure list and still show up only to be informed that we can’t swim today. The pool is closed for repairs surprisingly frequently (twice that I know of this month), and with what they charge for memberships it’s surprising. Our instructors are often absent leaving only a teenage boy lifeguard who “instructs” the class by sitting silently at the side of the pool. Changing room has only one changing room that accommodates changing a young child in and out of a diaper. Not sure what exactly we are paying for.
Negative experience: The YMCA does not support our military veterans. I encourage you to not do business with any place such as the Y in Hyannis that lacks such respect. It’s absurd to not do so in 2024!!! The only reason they even get a 1 is because 0 is not an option! Support businesses that support both our veterans and active duty military!
Fantastic experience: best front desk staff ever, and the lifeguards are so kind and not to mention,,, BEAUTIFUL! I don't understand where they are even getting these amazing lifeguards from,,, must be heaven!!!
Negative experience: Terry is awful and rude.
Negative experience: For the amount they get from each member why do they have mold growing in the family showers?!?! Looked like something out of a horror movie. We came from CT on vacation and walked right out because of how disgusting it is.
Negative experience: Terry the manager was incredibly rude and treated me like a fraud criminal when visiting the gym in Cape Cod. My fiancé and I normally go to the Redbrook gym and are nothing but 5 star happy. She called Redbrook after seeing my app and ID - after calling realized it was her typo. Never an apology and I had to ask the janitor where to go to workout. The least she could have done is give a sorry and kindly pointed me in the right direction.
Positive experience: A nice facility. The exercise room, however, is like a sauna at 70 degrees in winter. Less money spent on heat would create a place where people want to exercise without drowning in a puddle of sweat.
Fantastic experience: Teachers are awesome! They are patient and have done a great job helping my daughter adjust.
Fantastic experience: Clean gym, Friendly staff...kids love the pool! There are plenty of classes to choose from. Overall a great place to go.
Positive experience: Staff was great unfortunately they have no dry sauna or steam room and that is necessary in my world.
Fantastic experience: The YMCA is a great facility. I love the workout area, and the pool. I go early in the mornings and there is plenty of space to swim and do my workouts. Nice staff and it is always clean.
Fantastic experience: Good work.
Fantastic experience: Great place, calm, clean, helpful staff. Best Gym on the cape for those looking for a quiet place to exercise.
Fantastic experience: So grateful for this Y! They have done a great job with safety protocols around COVID, sanitizing, social distancing. I feel confident in going to use the weight room, bikes and treadmills here. Staff couldn't be more helpful or pleasant. It is so important to keep healthy in this time, and working out helps keep the stress level down.
Negative experience: I didn’t see any diversity at all in this establishment and the way I was informed was not very helpful nor professional.
Fantastic experience: Nice staff , clean, new machines.
Positive experience: Possibly the best YMCA I've been too; nonetheless they don't have a steam room or sauna :(
Negative experience: They used to have a better swim program for children. Recently changed the whole setup and the classes have gone downhill. Less actual teaching swimming skills. More stationary “let’s sing songs”. Never actually schedule/inform of make up classes when they have to close the pool. Frequently not informing of changes to start day of programs or closings. Prices keep going up and class quality keeps going down.
Positive experience: Very well run with great support staff
Fantastic experience: My family loves the YMCA they provide great summer camp experiencesite for all of our children
Fantastic experience: Friendly service and great workout machines and friendly staff. Also a really good nutrionist advocate
Fantastic experience: The swimming pool wasn't too cold!!!!
Negative experience: If I could give zero it would be better. My daughter filled out and hand delivered an application for after school care for her two children. She submitted tax returns, pay stubs, social security cards, etc. They lost them.... TWICE!!! She called and left messages that were not returned, and of course, no one knew what was going on. Do I really want to trust these people with my Grandchildren? I don't think so!!!! Piss poor.....
