Our comment from FitFit United States about Southside YMCA at Dimond:
The Southside YMCA at Dimond, located in Anchorage, offers a community-friendly atmosphere ideal for individuals and families. Users rave about the heated kiddie pool, perfect for little ones, and appreciate the warm and inviting staff who provide excellent customer service. Many members find the gym to be a great value for the price, with a variety of classes such as yoga and Zumba making it a fun place to work out.
However, despite its strengths, the facility has received notable criticism regarding its maintenance and cleanliness. Users have reported ongoing issues with the hot tub, sauna, and steam room being out of service for extended periods, as well as concerns about cleanliness and upkeep in locker rooms and other areas. Many members feel that renovations are long overdue, as some amenities appear outdated or unkempt.
In summary, while the Southside YMCA at Dimond is praised for its friendly atmosphere and affordability, enhancements in maintenance and facilities could elevate the member experience significantly. The management has acknowledged these concerns and plans for updates, which many hopeful members are eagerly anticipating.
Southside YMCA at Dimond: Opinions
Negative experience: I tried calling 3 times and no answer and then it automatically hung up. It was during operating hours. That's unacceptable as a business, you should have staff answer calls even if you have to place someone on hold.
Our Southside location Is permanently closed. We are working on updating the google listing. Call our Lake Otis facility at 907.563.3211
Positive experience: Needs a major deep clean & super bummed about the sauna/hot tub not reopening for what we pay per month. But I will say the options for classes are amazing.
Negative experience: Try finding other fitness centers before coming to YMCA. If the front desk lady's name is "Gabby", you'll have issues. May 14th 2024 Been visiting Southside ymca for couple months now with issues changing depending on a person working at the front desk, usually they would ask for last and first name and would let me through (i do have an account with em) , but recently they're asking for my id card for verification purposes, which I don't bring with me due to theft at the locker rooms i personally experienced seeing. They're strict about having YOUR identity, but provide an unclean/unsanitized locker rooms
Negative experience: Hot tub, sauna, and steam room all broken. They did a “shower remodel” all they did was put new shower heads on. Still very dirty. They upped my cost by 10 dollars a month for no reason and the main amenities are broken…. I’d save money going to planet fitness and a high school pool. Save money and go to planet fitness at least it’s 24 hours and has tanning/massage beds UPDATE: decided to keep the membership but only use the lakeotis location. The cost of membership has gone up 2 times in 3 years. Started at 67, went to 72. Now looking at my bank it jumped up to 88. No notice at all and you get less with everything broken at South location. Also random 1.50 charges are on my bank. Multiple
Negative experience: Embarrassing lack of maintenance. Noone seems responsible for upkeep. Hot tub down for over a year, broken lockers, tiles falling off the walls.
A statement going on our website soon
“The steam and sauna rooms as well as the hot tubs in the both the men’s and women’s locker rooms at Southside are not and will not reopen. Due to the extremely high cost of operations, municipal code issues and most of all safety concerns with the solitude of these being located in the locker rooms the YMCA has decided to not reopen these amenities. We understand that this may be frustrating for some but the safety of our members and guests is one of our top priorities and we feel that these types of services need to be located somewhere where they can be supervised by a trained staff member. A Steam Room is available at our Lake Otis location located on the pool deck adjacent to the Lifeguard chair”
Negative experience: Pool is ok but the rest of this place is a dump. Mold, bugs, everywhere you look something is falling apart or broke. Do yourself a favor and go to the lake Otis location. I have seen the ymca responses to all the other bad reviews and there is no exception for how junk this place is. They make plenty of money off people to have these places in top shape. I can't believe they try to justify it by unsafe or muni codes. Pathetic.
Negative experience: I really enjoy the lake Otis location of YMCA, but we came to the dimond location for the heated pool. The pool was great but this place needs some serious maintenance. The locker rooms are very eeky looking. I had gone to this gym with my parents growing up and not much has changed in that lower level or repaired since. It would have great potential as well as the location being perfect for my family.
We appreciate your feedback on your experience at the Dimond location
. Thank you for your kind words about our Lake Otis location and for enjoying the heated pool at Dimond. We apologize for the negative impression left. Thank you for your loyalty to YMCA, and we value your concern for the potential of the Y Dimond location. We look forward to providing a better experience for you.Thank you for your feedback. Best regards, YMCA of Alaska
Positive experience: Great and affordable needs updating
Negative experience: For $15 it's in painful need of renovations.
Negative experience: The place is dirty and has a not so pleasing aroma.
Negative experience: Purchased a swim lesson for my 3 yo daughter, in person, for the following Saturday with a specific instructor. We came for the lesson and the instructor was no call/no show. After waiting 30 minutes, asked the front desk to refund my $50 and charge me for an open swim instead. They were unable and referred me to the aquatic director, who told me I had the date wrong and should have checked the website. I had to contest the charges with my financial institution in order to recover my $50.
Positive experience: Was 5 but the steam room and the sauna have been broken for a whole year now. I've been going here for about 3 years and the hot tub has been broken the entire time.
Positive experience: There's some kind of mold growing in the ceiling of the male shower theres bugs coming outta the ceiling i got warts from here too how do I know? Because this is the only place I went to shower without flip-flops one time. the staff won't stop pestering me either like I know you're just talking to me for your image stop just stop and if you're reading this you know who you are I don't wanna talk to you, people make me really uncomfortable
Negative experience: I am hoping they will renew their pool level soon. The spaces are cool, but so much is out of order and feels dirty. We’ll be sticking to the Lake Otis location until things improve.
Positive experience: Hello, so if you have never been to this location but you do frequent the YMCA on Lake Otis and choose to check it out there is a couple things that you should be aware of. First the location used to be the Diamond fitness club or something and was repurposed for the YMCA which is a great way to save $$, except it's not bright and shiny like midtown and you can definitely tell that there is a lot of cosmetic work that could be done and there is absolutely NO sauna, hot tub or steam room which on google there is pictures like that's an amenity. There is two small awesome pools. A nice big open room upstairs with mirrors and Bluetooth speakers and dumbbells and kettlebells and some other useful things + your basic treadmill, ellipticals bikes. Downstairs ⬇️ is where the pool and dressing rooms are along with multiple small rooms each for different things. Volleyball with net, what used to be a squash room used for whatever, basketball half court and last but definitely not least there is probably 10ish actitrax machines (the same machines @ midtown upstairs) almost all in good shape except one with a out of Luck sign I didn't notice anyone using them except a group of young kids using them as a jungle gym. THERE ARE NO LOCKS ON THE LOCKERS BRING YOUR OWN(: The locker rooms (at least the females) really nice absolutely huge, you will have no problem finding privacy. Nice Leather couches for your kids to wait, or for you to rest your eyes lol Showers and restrooms. Definitely can tell that at one point in time this gym was absolutely top notch, but can tell after the old gym left some of the nicer things (sauna, hot tub ect.) became to expensive for upkeep or repairs and now is just there to make me sad for being so exited for nothing. Overall I am appreciative of this location being available, it's cool has a good vibe, but I definitely like my home gym.
Positive experience: We have used this pool as day guests several times now. It’s a great place for a quick dip with little kids because it has a heated kid pool that is large enough for at least 4-5 parent and kid sets. We used it during Spring Break and it was a bit busy but still fun. Great deal for littles under 5, who are free, but adults at this time are $15. And the shower facilities do get warm if you let the water run for a bit, but like other reviews have stated, it is in major need of repairs. I tried the Lake Otis pool as well in 2016 which was nice because it’s saltwater but it’s not as well heated. The Dimond Y is a tradeoff—it’s got chlorine for sure. You can smell it and the water isn’t even clear. Definitely don’t stay longer than an hour or two or you, or avoid it altogether if you have respiratory issues. My son also got a rash because he refused to shower off immediately. Put him in the tub at home and the rash went away. Warn your kids, please shower off the chlorine at the pool!
Negative experience: I’ve been going here at Dimond Center location for a while and this gym definitely needs some major repairs and upgrades. Jacuzzi and steam room is still closed and it said under construction but I don’t see anything is being done since the starting of pandemic. The most obvious are showers. Either it’s very hot or cold and most of them doesn’t shut off so constantly dripping hot water. What a waste of water and electricity. I love the location and the price is reasonable and the fact that they have a swimming pool, it’s really nice, but I wish they would repair and upgrade their facility soon.
You’re absolutely right. We are awaiting a lease extension and plan to begin upgrading and remodeling at that time. Our current lease expires in about 6 months and we are hesitant to put money in without that extension
Positive experience: I love how mellow this gym is. The only thing that sucks is no hot tub or sauna and the locker rooms are cold after swimming. I do hate that parents infringe on lap time with their kids. The big pool is supposed to be open from 7 to 9 for laps on Saturday. OH well. People are rude.... now I only swim during the weekdays.
Fantastic experience: Great experience
Positive experience: Friendly staff and accommodations are fairly up to date..
Negative experience: I have been a member since Oct 2021, my family use their facilities, recently my daughters phone was taken along with 2 other people's phones....I suggest locking up your electronics or belongings if you go there, the front desk personnel had no care at all about how we felt...she sees everyone who comes and goes......
Miss Fratis. My apologies that this occurred. We always suggest that valuables stay locked when not in use. I would also like to make you aware that our staff called me that evening in tears over what occurred. We will continue to work with the security team in hopes of recovering your items
Positive experience: The kiddy pool is so warm it's perfect for babies. My daughter loved it.
Thank you for your review!
Negative experience: My first time coming here I walked in and walked right out...I could of went Swimming for Free... The Young Giggling girls at the front desk that were laughing at something on their phones didn't ask no question about NOTHING I asked where was the pool they said down stairs to the left I was looking for someone so I can pay to swim .... I just wanted a friendly place to swim I have neuropathy and other pain in my joints and muscles in my lower back from a car accident a couple years back ...Maybe I should of asked but it's okay lesson learned.... God Bless.. *Always Remember the People You Hire Represent Your Company*
We apologize for the lack of attention you received on your visit. This is not the expectation we have of our staff. If you email [email protected] we will be sure to get you a free day pass so that you can visit the facility of your choice and learn more about what the Y has to offer.
Negative experience: The staff and location (proximity in town) is good. The facility is falling apart.
Fantastic experience: Yoga classes with Russell are so much fun! He is such an encouraging and fun instructor. The salt water swimming pools are great—the warm, shallow pool is perfect for little people. Kim is a great water instructor—whether it’s exercise class or swim instruction. Front desk folks are super welcoming, friendly and helpful. It’s great to to welcomed with a smile and a genuine greeting when I arrive. Southside YMCA has done a wonderful job taking over the old Dimond Athletic Club. Eventually the locker rooms will be re-done and feel as top notch as the folks who are working at the Y. Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.
Thank you for the review Janie. We were happy to have Russell join our team when we open the Southside Y. Thank you for being apart of the Y family.
Fantastic experience: The Zumba class us super fun with Micha.
We love to hear members enjoying our group fitness class. Tomorrow at noon is Zumba in the park downtown. Every Tuesday this summer!
Fantastic experience: Very fun . ... just have to pay for a membership ... :]
Positive experience: The kiddy pool is so warm it's perfect for babies. My daughter loved it.
Positive experience: Friendly staff and accommodations are fairly up to date..
Fantastic experience: Positive: Quality

Fantastic experience: Swimming is excellent
Fantastic experience: Great very quite enjoyed work out
Fantastic experience: Awesome

Fantastic experience: Best place ever.
Fantastic experience: Best place ever.
Positive experience: 5 stars if they had equipment to hit calves with
Positive experience: Miss the steam room and hot tub stupid covid
Positive experience: It was great, there is a pool at the diamond center Mall YMCA
Positive experience: It's okay but I always feel uncomfortable over there few creeps
Positive experience: Huge place. Has everything you need. However, some things could be updated so they can work properly.
Negative experience: Dimond location on Saturday is super quiet.. & minimal staff. In weight room, there's smashed wall has been there for a while. You're definitely on your own. If you're a beginner this not a gym for you.
Negative experience: This is the most disgusting place I have ever been too. I do not understand all of the positive reviews. The women’s locker room looks like something out of a SAW movie. The carpet in the locker area very obviously has not been shampooed in a very long time. There is dust, dirt and grim on the carpet. The inside of the locker was even dirty. There was a wall covered in some sort of yellow/orange (dried) sludge. The hot tub was 1/4 filled and had a layer of grim at the bottom. The trash cans were even worn and dirty. Tiles missing from the ceiling. Once in the pool area the doors to employee areas were open and cluttered. Everything looked and felt old and very dirty. The best thing about this location was the heated toddler pool BUT even that was gross and dirty. All sorts of stuff floating in the water. At one point a child had a bloody nose and the pool attendant cleaned the area by dumping a bucket of pool water to clear it off the deck. Yikes! Is that sanitary and protocol? I would think YMCA has a standard for their stores. Obviously corporate has not been to this location, ever.
Fantastic experience: I love this location. They have the kiddies pool which is actually warm warm. I LOVE IT!! The manager is great and easy to talk to. Childcare would make it even better but people need to understand it’s pretty new. It’s going to take time to get things close to where it should be.
Fantastic experience: I love coming to the YMCA!!! I enjoy both locations and Between eating healthy, attending their various dance/workout classes, and utilizing the gym/pool, I have almost hit my goal weight. The support from staff/management has been so helpful, especially on days when I didn't think I could keep coming. I just wish they could stay open later, or even have one of the locations open 24/7.
Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality
Fantastic experience: Love it!! Great way to sweat off the day
Fantastic experience: Clean very well lighted
Positive experience: Awesome for after school/work relaxing time. Kids enjoy the crystal clear pools. Locker rooms are clean. Friendly staff
Fantastic experience: YMCA is a great place for people to get fit and have fun who doesnt love THIS PLACE!
Fantastic experience: Kids pool is so warm.
Fantastic experience: Nice
Fantastic experience: Love the temp of the pools
Fantastic experience: I like the ymca
Fantastic experience: I love it I get to work out on the elliptical and bicycle while doing a course like I'm there.
Fantastic experience: This review is for the lady who just answered the phone , she was very helpful and at least with me , she delivered amazing costumer service plus she’s very nice . While the other one at Lake Otis pretty much hanged the phone on me .
Fantastic experience: The previous owners ran this place down pretty badly. YMCA recently purchased it and has already made some improvements, replaced some flooring, and etc. YMCA is a non-profit, so they are repairing things as funds allow, but the place already looks much better than under previous owners. Thanks YMCA for what you've done to improve this place and for your mission!
Fantastic experience: This place is amazing. Big swimming pool, salt baths, Saunas, basketball and racquetball courts. Many different excersise classes. Nautalis room, free weight room. Spin classes, treadmills, ellipticals. Non-profit. Community friendly. Clean environment and provides towels.
Fantastic experience: Signed up! Great place, very clean, BRITTANY offers GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. Thank you for the tour, LEON. Very impressed. Great work out room. The BEST PART is the VIEW from the workout room. You can't beat it, at any gym facility. It gives you peace and calm while working out! ❤❤✔ Their pool is AMAZING, I absolutely LOVE it!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Fantastic experience: Better then the chain places!.
Fantastic experience: It's called MeeTime
Positive experience: Yep
Positive experience: Good place
Positive experience: Great place
Negative experience: Dirty place and rude staff!!!
Positive experience: Nice Gym!!
Positive experience: Really enjoyed the pool therapy class
Positive experience: Good options for the price. A visitor pass for my 2 kids was only $20, which includes access to the pool.
Negative experience: This location is very trashy and very unprofessional staff. The employee at the front desk had "baggy" pants that had holes in them.
Positive experience: It will be much nicer once they finish updating their equipment.
Negative experience: I signed up with them and within a week there hours changed where they close at 3pm on Sundays and 5pm on saturdays. This didn't work with my schedule and they wouldn't refund me. I understand that they would keep the sign up fee cost but they also kept my monthly which was unfair in my opinion.
Positive experience: Could use more upkeep on equipment and need better selection. No kid care as promised for summer 2019...still waiting. Planet fitness is better deal for $10-$20/month if dont care for a pool
Positive experience: I really love that they have taken over the diamond athletic club. They have done a lot to update, but still have some things to do to being it back to its glory. I am looking forward to many years of staying healthy here. The folks at the front desk have always been very helpful.
Positive experience: Getting better with new management. Used to be borderline health hazard. Now they keep it pretty clean. They need to upgrade locker rooms and sauna asap. Could be a good hub for health with the right team.
Fantastic experience: This place is kept clean, the amenities are top notch, it’s comfortable and the hours are perfect, the location couldn’t be better..
Fantastic experience: Great place.
Negative experience: They are horrible on making arrangements for payment plans and all out rude staff members every where you look!
Positive experience: There putting lots work in it and the south side geting nice place look good I'd like see supper size pool on that side for kids family's
Negative experience: Some of the staff is very rude and have bad attitudes that made me not want to come back. Specifically, Carolynn Cliff the swim instructor. Very snappy , staring at me the entire time I was in the pool like I was doing something wrong. This woman also waited for us to get out the pool and rushed over to grab the pool noodles and lock them away when we had barely gotten out of the pool. She hated us being there. I’m not pleased with my experience and may not come back.
Positive experience: Been going to DAC since 1992. Started there because it's the only club in town with a decent pool besides the old Teamsters club on Tudor. But this is less expensive, always clean, not crowded, and even though it is now over 35 years old and takes constant maintenance, Migel keeps everything running. The staff changes but Mo and Angelia always greet with smiles and Jim keeps clean warm towels coming. PLUS you meet the neatest people there, young and old of many races.
