Fantastic experience: I love the West Y. It is close to my home, it is kid friendly which most other gyms aren't. I taught special Ed. preschool for several years, team teaching with the Y, and we came to the YMCA to help teach our children how to swim. This has helped me be able to teach my grandchildren, and nieces and nephews how to swim too. Currently, I am an empty nester, so now I just enjoy walking the track and seeing the children play in the gym below me. I've got a "trainer" who is setting me up on the weight machines. I have been gone from the y for about five years. I'm glad to be back! Looking forward to getting back in shape.

Fantastic experience: This would be an excellent gym if it was only a gym. The machines are well maintained, staff courteous, there is a wide variety and good number of weights and machines, as well as a small inside running track and the largest swimming facility in the area. In addition to all of those things, it's a full-functioning YMCA, with classes and activities (yoga to fencing and life saving). I recently took my eleven-year-old out to celebrate her birthday for the day, doing whatever she wanted, and we spent almost the entire time at the Y -- from rock climbing to racing each other through the aquatic obstacle course they had set up. It's a lot more than just one of the better gyms in town.

Positive experience: We love to swim Laps in the pool. The pool is always clean and a nice temperature for lap swimming. There are always several life guards around the pool area and the staff is helpful and friendly. One issue though, is the showers in the downstairs locker room usually have freezing cold water. Sometimes it’s warm, but it’s not consistent. If we weren’t paying so much money for our memberships, this would not be as big of a deal. But for the monthly cost, we should get warm showers. Otherwise, this YMCA is a great place to swim year round.

Fantastic experience: Being new to the area, finding a quality fitness facility was at the top of my "to do" list. After looking at several health club options, none could come even close to comparing with the West Boise YMCA! From the wonderful staff, wide range of great equipment, incredible facilities for raquet ball, basketball, aerobics, clean spacious locker rooms, and last but not least aquatic center, this facility is top-notch!

Fantastic experience: Facilities: The West Valley Y has a massive pool, and two other pools, one just for little kids. I'm not sure what the other shallow pool is for. Water aerobics? Places to sit. Lots of lifeguards, I've noticed. If I were a parent, I'd likely be pleased with the pool area. Or if I were into swimming. There's even a waterslide. I don't spend time in the aquatics area though, so I can't comment further on that. Upstairs and downstairs locker room facilities, various rooms for classes and after school programs, a climbing wall for the kids. Large variety of fitness classes. There are racquetball courts, a basketball court, and a room for spin class. I don't swim or take classes. I just go upstairs. Thats where the cardio equipment, weight machines, and free weights are, as well as a small studio for yoga and pilates, and a small walking track. I love the walking track! I really like that there are huge windows to look out of while I'm walking, and that I can watch people play basketball below me as I'm walking. The yoga studio upstairs is locked when not in use, but a staff member will unlock it for you if you ask. The men's locker room upstairs is never perfectly clean, but it is as clean as any other locker room I've been in. Staff and membership: The staff at the front desk seem friendly enough, although I've hardly ever interacted with them, except hello and goodbye. I just show up, work out, go home. Most of the people at the front desk are well-informed, but not all. Years ago, I canceled my membership due to health reasons. Canceling was easy, as was signing up again. I came back a few months after canceling. I was told to bring a doctor's note when I canceled, so that I would not have to pay another joining fee, so that's what I did. That was some years ago though. I don't know if policy has changed. The Y offers reduced rates for people who don't have much income. You'll need to provide financial documents, and fill out some forms. Otherwise, if I remember correctly, a single membership costs $49/mo. It might have gone up since I wrote this review though. Atmosphere: There's a family atmosphere to the place. It doesn't feel like a competitive health club where people are showing off, except for a few here and there - especially some of the people in the free weights area. It doesn't feel like a meat market, at least, not when I am there. I'm almost never there when it is busy though. I don't like a lot of noise, or being around a lot of people, so I usually get there just over an hour before closing. Nice and quiet at that time, except for the dudes playing basketball, but as long as they don't play their boom boxes (which they are not allowed to do), they don't bother me. In the late evening, the music in the background is not played loudly. For me that is hugely important, as I am sensitive to sound, and music I don't like. I bring headphones plugged into my phone or ipod, and listen to music or podcasts. I can easily hear what I want to hear without being distracted, except for near the circuit training area upstairs, where the music is a little louder. The music upstairs is usually decent. Classic rock, music from the '80's. Not awful stuff like so much current mainstream music. I think this is a choice management makes to enhance the family atmosphere - no music with raunchy lyrics, like music in other health clubs I've been to. I don't know what music is played in various classes. When it is busy, the Y is a terribly loud place! Multiple classes going at once, annoying "music" being blasted and class teachers shouting over the music. Lots of people upstairs too, on the machines, and using the weights, clanking and banging. As for me, I'm quite happy working out in the late evening. That's when the Y is a very pleasant place to be. I do wish the Y would stay open later though. One last thing - right behind the Y are tennis courts and a park with a walking path, surrounded by nice neighborhoods. Sometimes, after my workout, I like to walk in the park. Thanks for reading.

Fantastic experience: Wow. Where do I begin? How about that vending machine? Always full. You never have to wonder if there is going to be a snickers in that bad boy. But wait! Is that a three musketeer bar. Yup. They've got that too. I've been going to that YMCA for a long time now, and I have to say, they have the best vending machine in town! Although, I have to be honest, I don't always go there for their vending machines. Sometimes I go there to get away from my family. It's a cool hangout you can turn off your phone and tell your wife that you can't get service in there. She can't prove it. While you are enjoying your alone time you can walk around their track or lift weights. It's pretty awesome. I know this place is family friendly and not tailored to any gender, but I told my wife it's strictly for men only. If she starts hanging out here I'm going to have to find a new vending machine.

Fantastic experience: Great place for exercise and family. We were members at this YMCA for years and enjoyed the great facilities and friendly staff. As a mom to several young children, this was a great place to socialize and exercise. The kid's place was great, but so was the Youth Activity Center or YAC (pronounced Yack.) The kids loved it and the staff treated them well and made sure that kids spoke respectfully to each other and the staff. The childcare was a great place for helping mom to get some exercise and interaction. The kids thought it was the best thing ever. The staff was very caring, no matter how it turned over through the years. My babies and kids loved mornings especially because there was such a large group that they had plenty of friends and the care facility was moved into the gym across the hall for the older kids' age group. The pool is excellent and the waterslide is especially popular in our family. The kids love the slide and I love the climb to the top for the exercise we got. The diving boards are fabulous as a challenge to the kids. And of course the swim team has a great chance to be involved. The pool is shared with the City of Boise, so it is open to the public, unlike the rest of the facilities. The pool has it's own locker room for the public. There's also a locker room for families. It's a little nicer. Then, there's a separate locker room for adults that's even nicer. It's upstairs and quiet. We had towel service which was great to not have to worry about wet towels and kids leaving them behind. The racquetball courts, basketball/volleyball, indoor track, weight room, aerobic area, and guided weight training are great. The climbing wall is fantastic. We had to stop going when we moved and had some family changes, but I can't praise it enough.

Fantastic experience: This place has something for everyone. I am personally a huge fan of the pool area. There are many lanes for lap swimming, a large free swim area, a slide, a children's pool and a hot tub. The staff is prompt in helping in any way needed. This facility is huge, you will love it! Give it a try.
