Our comment from FitFit United States about The Stowe Family YMCA:
The Stowe Family YMCA, located in Belmont, United States, is a community-focused fitness center that offers a variety of amenities at an affordable price. While some facilities are noted to be outdated, patrons appreciate the cleanliness and the abundance of classes available, making it a suitable place for all fitness levels. The YMCA features a well-maintained gym, pool, sauna, and engaging group fitness classes, all of which contribute to a welcoming and positive atmosphere.
Highlights:
- Great range of amenities including gym, classes, pool, and sauna.
- Clean environment with attention to maintenance.
- Friendly and helpful staff, creating a community feel.
- Diverse class offerings cater to various skill levels.
- Positive atmosphere for families, especially kids' programs.
However, some members have expressed concerns regarding customer service, particularly at the front desk, mentioning unhelpfulness during critical times. There also appear to be issues concerning scheduling conflicts for gym space and limited communication regarding cancellations, particularly with swimming lessons. Users have noted that the facility could benefit from renovations, especially in locker rooms and general upkeep.
Overall, many commend the friendly and supportive community at the Stowe Family YMCA, making it a great place for fitness and family activities despite some areas needing improvement.
The Stowe Family YMCA: Opinions
Positive experience: Space is dated but overall clean. Great amenities for the price (gym, classes, pool, sauna, etc). However, front desk staff is completely unhelpful. My monthly autopay keeps dropping off the system somehow, and when I tried to get assistance with fixing it (as recommended in an email exchange/phone call with the business manager), the front desk staff was too busy flirting with other members’ out of town guests to actually focus on helping me solve my issue… and referred me back to the business manager who is “unavailable at this time due to a family emergency”…. only to find out from the business manager when I emailed her that there was no family emergency… Still can’t seem to get anyone to help me figure out how to *ensure* my monthly auto pay won’t continue to drop off of their payment portal.
Negative experience: Do not sign a contract here they will rob you!! Not worth the money for whats limited to do here.
Negative experience: Good luck trying to cancel when you see that the gym is always occupied with other things but basketball when your trying to play with your kids, it’s either daycare, “pickelball” , or a adult league , etc always taking over the gym. You pay 90 bucks to work around the their schedule. Canceling your membership is like pulling teeth because we have tried for the past 3 months and they still continued to take 90 bucks a month and keep adding on. Kelly Davis the person in charge of doing so is never at her office, she will not call you back it’s email only. This place will rob you, I’m better off leaving 90 dollars in cash in my vehicle and letting someone steal it at least it’s contributing.. True story we payed 180 bucks and 2 days later because it was paid on the 28 we tried to go their on the first and was turned away but personally have seen other people be a week late and it was no problem at all. This place is a Absolute nightmare and I Highly recommend not signing a contract with them, Because the things you wanna do, there is on their time and if you can’t make that time, then it’s not available for you at all. The only thing that was consistent is the weightlifting, and that was it, But you can join a different way cheaper than you can do this the YMCA will rob you.
Negative experience: We leave our kids at the Child Watch while we work out. Their protocol is to scan the parents card to check them in, and the only person that is allowed to check them out is the parent, not an Y employee/ director/ manager/ anybody, just the parent. When my husband came back to get the kids my 4 year old was in the middle of being given a prize from a bucket for “helping” in the bathroom. The Director of the Camp program, Taylor, had taken our 4 year old out of the Childwatch and asked to crawl in her hands and knees on the bathroom under a bathroom stall so that they could lock it because the toilet was clogged. My husband was outraged and ran to the front desk to ask an employee why they had not performed this work instead and one employee said, “ew I’m not doing that!” Yet they took our child out of a secure area to do it?! why is our 4 year performing a job that your employees don’t even want to do? God only knows what is on that floor. And they didn’t even have her wash her hands our daughter told us. There are so many things wrong with this scenario. Were they alone in the bathroom together? Why not hang an “out of order sign”? How are we able to trust them ever again to watch our kids, let alone trust their judgment?! In a place that apparently prides themselves in safety, Christianity, and family values. Also, they’ll call you while you’re working out to tell you that your child needs a diaper change, or is misbehaving but they don’t call you to let you know they are taking your child out of a secure area to crawl on a bathroom floor? What if someone kidnapped her or what if she touched biohazards? Our child could have been exposed to bloodbourne pathogens on that floor. I’m writing all of this to inform other parents that is the risk you take when getting a membership here if you plan to use their childcare. This is the risk you have to take to leave your babies in their care. There are young adults working there that don’t have the experience, empathy, and emotional capacity to even slightly comprehend how their decisions affect children and their parents. We spoke to the Director of the Y and were offered an apology, but this lack of empathy is quite obvious as we haven’t even received an apology from Taylor herself and we still see her when we’re there.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We deeply regret the incident involving your child and sincerely apologize for the distress it has caused your family. Your concerns have been taken very seriously by our team. I spoke with your husband and acknowledged that our check-out protocol was not followed. I assured him that Taylor had another staff member present, adhering to our policy that no child be one-on-one with a staff person in the bathroom. We should never have asked your child to crawl on the bathroom floor to lock the stall door. We have since implemented measures to prevent such incidents in the future. We understand the importance of trust in childcare and are committed to rebuilding that trust with your family. Thank you for continuing to use our Childwatch services. We are dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for your children. Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any further concerns or suggestions. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve our services.
Negative experience: Used to be great when didn’t have to register on website to swim. Started during Covid and they still continue to do after Covid
Positive experience: Outdated facility but great place to workout
Fantastic experience: It's a little small little Outdated But the equipment is always clean and they have really good classes
Negative experience: Do not recommend the swimming lessons at ALL. It has been a nightmare from day 1. First of all, we had to wait a solid 2 to 3 weeks just to START the swimming lessons because their water heater in the pool was broken. One day, we drove all the way up there (I live 15 mins from this YMCA) just to be told that lessons were canceled due to "lightening in the area." There was none. Even so, something that could've been a quick email or even phone call to not waste parents time by coming all the way there, they "conveniently" allowed all parents to arrive to only just turn around and go home. Secondly, the power went out another day and they cancelled that lesson too.... then I get an email today stating that they're canceling our swimming lessons 2 weeks early which means that we get to miss out on THREE swimming lessons. WHY do you ask? Oh, because the next round of swimming lessons can't be delayed because that would be way too complicated for someone to actually do their job and have them simply move the swimming lessons up a bit so we as the parents who PAID a lot of money for these lessons will get what we actually wanted and expected to get out of them. We were offered to use our credit towards the next round of swimming lessons but why would I want to do that when you guys have a habit of canceling swimming lessons left and right and then cancel them early anyway, before they're even supposed to be over??? I will be getting my money back for the lost lessons and never returning. This place lacks simple professionalism, communication, organization and planning.
Negative experience: I would not recommend the swim program - poor communication and lack of planning for those who have paid and planned lessons.
Negative experience: There is always standing water on the floor of the men’s locker room. Once or twice is understandable, but all day every day is disgusting.
Positive experience: The hours of operation are terrible.
Negative experience: Doesn't make sense that the new planned expansion would include an outdoor pool when what is needed is a second indoor pool. Who is going to swim in an outdoor pool except during the warm summer months? Doesn't make sense and a waste of money.
Negative experience: Just left a deep stretch yoga class that was so cold I had to do it with my coat on. Not only ridiculous but definitely not conducive to deep stretch! When you bring it to their attention you just get 'oh well, that's how it is'.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during your recent deep stretch yoga class, with the room being colder than expected. It's disheartening to hear that the temperature affected your practice. We want to inform you that our Stowe Capital Campaign is dedicated to addressing issues like this by focusing on necessary renovations and expansions. Your feedback serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of these improvements, and we are actively working to create a more comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for all. You can learn more about our plans here: https://gastonymca.org/stowe-family-ymca-capital-campaign We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to make enhancements to our facilities. Thank you for being a part of our community.
Fantastic experience: Love going to this YMCA. Everybody is welcoming and attentive!
Fantastic experience: Angelica was lovely and so helpful when we came to tour! The space is great for the price and we enjoyed the facility.
Thank you so much for the feedback, Christina! We look forward to serving you as a YMCA member!
Fantastic experience: Mandy is amazing and easily the reason I was sold on signing up. Thank you for offering such a great atmosphere and wonderful/inviting community!!
Rebecca, Thank you so much for sharing your positive experience with Mandy at the Stowe YMCA! We are so happy to have you as a YCMA member!
Negative experience: Poor customer service at the front desk. This location changed their check in procedure for guest during their youth basketball season. Instead of being honest and transparent about their changes, when I begin to question why I had to sign when halfway through their basketball season, they didn't check me in before so why now - I was accused of lying because that's always been their process. I was stereotyped by a older woman behind desk who accused of being angry. And I was accused for slamming my ID on the counter when I actually had to reach over several items on their counter to place my ID in front of her. The male behind the front desk told me I could leave if I didn't want to sign when all I was doing was defending myself from him calling me a liar concerning thier process and my questioning their new or inconsistent check-in process. But what finally put the icing on the cake for me was when the lady asked for my phone number as she was signing me in and so I asked her why does she need all this confidential information from me. Instead of explaining exactly what information she was retrieving from my license and why she needed my license and phone number, she walks off and comes back a few minutes later and then said her director will be with me in minute. It made me felt disrespected for asking legitimate questions about their checkin process and why they were collecting my confidential information and how they where planning on using my information. I finally just left due to the unprofessional behavior of their front desk stuff and their failure to show good customer service by just simply being apologetic for failing to sign me in before and explaining how they will start enforcing their checkin policy and why they where collecting and will use my confidential information. For me, due to my position in the surrounding communities and one of my pet-pee is customer service, I won't ever step into this local YMCA again.
Deaidre, we are sorry to hear that this was the experience for you and for our staff. While we aim to check in every guest for our sporting events, it's sometimes impossible. That said, it is our policy and procedure to attempt to properly check in every guest with a valid ID and contact information. This is for your safety in case of an emergency, for others safety, and to uphold the integrity of a YMCA membership. We feel as though we followed procedure and explained our check in process thoroughly and we stand by those policies and the staff that enforced them. We do apologize for the situation and the experience that you had that day as we understand that it was stressful for everyone involved. But it won't be for nothing. We are using this situation as an opportunity to reassess our check-in methods to ensure there is more awareness about our policies and to provide a more secure access point. Thank you for your feedback on this matter.
Negative experience: If you want to join for pool time don't waste your money. I have severe arthritis I'm not interested in classes. Mostly pain relief and exercise on my own terms. They have it so booked up with classes and events that open pool time is extremely limited and not convenient unless you have an open schedule. YMCA you received a free month of money out of me, but this is the last. Shameful a place has to rip people off to get ahead. When I joined they made it seem like there is lots of open pool time but that's not true.
Hi Angela, We 're sorry your membership experience wasn't all you expected it to be. We hate falling short so our team will be reaching out to you via the information we have on file so we can address your concerns. We appreciate the feedback and having a chance to make it right. Please keep an eye out for an email and/or phone call from us very soon!
Positive experience: I come here most days for the gym. Very good place and very clean. The only thing that bothers me is hearing the camp counselors and after school counselors yelling at kids and talking to them very aggressively. I understand them having to deal with kids all day but don’t do it if your going to act the way some of them do.
Thank you for your review and observation. We keep a close eye (and ear) on our staff and their conduct and strive to provide regular feedback when it's warranted... both constructive criticisms and positive praise! We appreciate you sharing your experience and will touch on this during our next staff gathering. Thank you for being a YMCA member!
Negative experience: We have sent our oldest to different ymca camps, this YMCA will hold your kid hostage until they are ready to release them. The facilities are old and run down. Don't expect the employees to know what is going on.
Hi Don, We are sorry to hear about your experience with camper pickup. We did reach out to you via phone in hopes to better understand your concerns but it seems we got disconnected. As stated in our camper welcome email: "RIDES OUT REMINDER! Rides out begin at 4pm and end at 6pm. There will be no pickup between 3:30 and 4 as we use this time to collect items to go home, use the restroom and transition to rides out locations. If you plan to pick up before 3:30 please call the camp phone and a camp staff will meet you at the front desk with your camper. " Additionally, similar information is on our website and in our Rides In and Out Map ( which can be found here https://www.gastonymca.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/RIDES-IN-RIDES-OUT-MAP-3.pdf): "If you are dropping off late or picking up early, please call 980-745-2244 so that someone can arrange to meet you." If you'd like to discuss how we could have improved your experience, please reach out at [email protected] Lastly, we agree that our facility is due for an update and we are working on that now, actually! We would love to hear your ideas for the renovation and expansion that's currently in the works. You can take the survey in the link below. Stowe Renovation and Expansion Survey https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSenhb9maTKueVC5tE5d-bcax3w0OYOo00S9_KZT23_e28ex6A/viewform?usp=sf_link
Negative experience: I left the ymca due to the lack of cleaning. It needs to be renovated for sure in all areas. It also lacks of good group instruction classes. No good instructors for the evening clases. I lost motivation and left. I’ll return once it has been renovated like the others Ymca in the Gastonia and charlotte area.
Hi Susy, Thank you for your feedback and for being a part of our YMCA membership family! We are so sorry to hear you're taking a break but the good news is, we are in the process of fundraising for our Stowe renovation plans and we can't wait to share more details! So stay tuned and please give our other branches a try in the meantime. We look forward to having you back soon!
Negative experience: Very disappointed in their lack of masking in this facility. The pandemic is still causing morbidity and mortality that requires us to take care of each other. They are not doing that at this facility.
Fantastic experience: Great energy, very professional and wonderful motivators for the classes, which range from all skill levels and a nice variety!
Fantastic experience: The staff is very friendly and most helpful. Carol explained that the YMCA app provides a quick way to view and enroll in the classes. The distance between machines and cleanliness provides a safe environment. Everyone wears a mask while inside and working out. Good to return on a regular basis.
That’s great news! Thank you for sharing your experience. We are glad you are enjoying your Y!
Fantastic experience: The instructors are great! They bring the Les Mill releases to life. Also people who work at the desk and a few of the instructors often call me by name.
Thank you Pam! It's great to hear you enjoy the Y and it is keeping you active!
Fantastic experience: Been here for over 5 years. Love the respect that is shown to every person who comes to the Stowe Family Y.
Positive experience: Overall a good facility. Locker rooms, steam and sauna need updating and regular cleaning, which wasn’t being done. They have hired staff for general cleaning and maintenance but the bathrooms/showers and steam need regular disinfecting. Spraying down with a 10/1 Clorox pump sprayer and hosing out …would work wonders. Mopping and spraying a can of Lysol is not doing any good. Look forward to seeing the progress they have talked about
Thank you for the feedback, J!
Fantastic experience: Great energy, very professional and wonderful motivators for the classes, which range from all skill levels and a nice variety!
Thanks Lindsay!
Fantastic experience: What a lovely YMCA experience! Everytime without fail, I am greeted warmly by the front desk staff and again greeted warmly by the lifeguards at the pool. The lifeguards also look me in the eye and thank me upon my exit for coming to swim there today. What a difference their kindness makes! This poor world needs a huge dose of what they do so well at the Stowe YMCA. They treat their members with humility, respect, caring and kindness--a beautiful reflection of good management who've prioritized YMCA values in action--despite the circumstances we're in. God bless Stowe YMCA staff and management
Fantastic experience: My experience at Stowe YMCA has always been positive. Pool management is excellent. Clean and lifeguards are very professional and friendly. Bill Piercy
Bill, Thank you for your kind words. We are glad you are enjoying the pool and thank you for being a member of our Y family. Mary
Fantastic experience: Great place for anybody. Family. Individual or anything in between. Great staff and great equipment.
Negative experience: Overall the facility is nice. However, the lock rooms are so outdated, rusted and unkept. Old lock rooms that has a constant stench of body Oder. I thought it was just a one tome thing but I have gone 3 times in the ost couple of weeks and same smell and condition. Needs cleaner locker rooms. Other then that very good facility.
Negative experience: Spent an hour in there today trying to sign up I stood in line at the desk was told that they would get to me as quickly as they could then they help for people before they call even called me backup I got tired of waiting and left I don't guess I need to be a member of the YMCA
Michael - We apologize for your experience and are so glad we connected on the phone any hope you enjoy your Y Membership.
Fantastic experience: My son joined YMCA Camp for the first time this summer and has had a blast. I love that there are "themes" for each week and that the activities follow those themes. We will definitely be back next summer.
Fantastic experience: Everyone: the folks at the counter, the people teaching the classes, the aides in the weight room, swim instructors, everyone with whom I’ve come in contact has been friendly, helpful and professional. I feel like I’m in church when I go there and that makes me want to go back!!
Bruce, Thank you for your kind words. I am so happy I had the pleasure of meeting you yesterday. You have quite the workout schedule going on. Keep it up! Let us know if there is anything we can do to assist. See you at the Y! Mary
Fantastic experience: My kids love going to the YMCA after school. They get their homework done and get to have fun and play before it's time to go home. It is also convenient for that the YMCA has transportation from school to the YMCA.
Fantastic experience: There is something for every age group here at the Stowe YMCA. I love how so many of the members help each other with their fitness and health goals; You can build friendships there. It's an uplifting and encouraging place to be!
Thank you for this kind message. We are glad you are enjoying your membership.
Fantastic experience: Pleasant staff and always clean facility. You can have a one on one coaching with a fitness trainer to help with wellness goals. There is a pool steam room and suana. There are community events ans even childcare for kids. I enjoy taking the group classes there is a huge variety such as yoga, cycling and zumba. I would definitely recommend.
Fantastic experience: I love the Stowe YMCA! It's typically not crowded and the staff members are very helpful and friendly!
Fantastic experience: Friendly community, awesome staff.
Fantastic experience: My two sons always have a blast at summer camp at the Y. :-)
Fantastic experience: Good variety of classes and awesome instructors
Fantastic experience: The Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA of Belmont, North Carolina is a great YMCA that gave me a great workout experience, and exceeded my expectations. Here's why I liked the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA: Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA has such a large variety of equipment for whatever type of exercise you might be looking for. For example, it doesn't matter if you're into cardio, weightlifting, swimming, spinning, running, or cross-fit because there's something for everyone. Not only does the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA have a variety of equipment, but it's also the newest equipment on the market. This is not only the latest and greatest equipment, but it's also laid out perfectly throughout the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA. I have been to several other YMCAs, nonetheless, none compare to the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA. No other training facilities or gyms can compete with the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCAs equipment, equipment cleanliness, employee professionalism, facility cleanliness, or overall facility as a whole. Also, all employees at Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA are prompt, professional, courteous, and tactful. Every employee at the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA went above and beyond for me. Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA of Belmont, North Carolina has a welcoming atmosphere that leaves the customer wanting to come back time and time again. The overall cleanliness of the Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA is above average from that of other YMCAs I have been to as well. Finally, Robert Lee Stowe Jr Family YMCA is easy to find, and also has accessible parking.
Fantastic experience: Clean, great staff & good equipment
Fantastic experience: There are lots of classes and schedules to choose from. Trainers are excellent!
Fantastic experience: Offering a variety of classes for people of all ages and abilities, I have found the members and staff encouraging and uplifting! Equipment is in good repair and accessible. Love this place!!
Negative experience: Their childwatch does not stop bulling
Fantastic experience: Great people there. Sometimes bad language in the gym. Not very clean equipment though...
Negative experience: It is very frustrating to pay money for a gym membership that hardly gets its use. Every time I go, there are people in equipment just sitting and warming the seat, playing on their phones. I have a structured workout plan and can never get it done because people take up equipment without using it and refuse to let me work in with them. There is not enough equipment. I have the same issue at Warlick.
Negative experience: Ymca Summercamp: In this program the counselor slammed my child by his neck, children told my child which is 6 years old to pee on the wall to be in the childrens gang and the staff made racial remarks to address the issue saying the children that were involved in this gang didn't come from a bad background or have hard names. She went as far as to say that the students were trying to be thugs like Steph curry. I reported this to the director and they have yet to get this issue addressed or resolved.
Fantastic experience: The staff and trainers are very helpful and knowledgeable and go the extra mile for you.
Fantastic experience: I use the pool. Clean well maintained, good water aerobics classes. Friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: My family just love the Stowe YMCA. Its not a huge Y and everyone is so helpful there. Our children (3 boys) utilize our membership more than we do and they love it. They workout, play basketball and swim. They have meet so many great people but just going to the Y!!!!!!! Thank you Stowe YMCA for all that you do for my family and the community.
Fantastic experience: I just love it i know it well
Positive experience: I take swimming lessons and they are so thoughtful and generous to those of the students and to the people there
