Gaffney Fitness Center, located in Fort Meade, is praised as a strong facility for fitness enthusiasts, boasting a wide variety of equipment and training options to cater to various needs. Users appreciate the gym's ample selection of strength training, cardio, and cross-fit equipment, highlighting that the space is well-maintained and clean.
Many users have expressed positive feedback, such as:

- "Nice gym, very clean and like new."
- "Their equipment is updated, too, with lots of new free weight racks."
- "Friendly and cooperative staff, great variety of exercise equipment!"
However, some challenges have been noted, particularly in terms of operating hours. Users have pointed out:
- Limited weekend hours, with only 4 hours on Saturdays and closed on Sundays, making it difficult for service members to find time to work out.
- Inconsistent pool availability and lack of access to locker rooms, creating frustration for patrons.
- Reports of occasional broken equipment and discomfort due to high temperatures inside the gym during peak summer months.
Overall, while Gaffney Fitness Center is recognized as a solid option for fitness on base, there is a need for improvements in hours of operation and equipment maintenance for an enhanced experience.

Gaffney Fitness Center: Opinions

Positive experience: It’s a good army gym
Positive experience: I like how this gym has many options for the needs you want to work on in terms of strength training, cardio etc.
Fantastic experience: Perfect place to workout
Positive experience: Great facility. Weird/very limited weekend hours, and no late options though. Which is too bad since that's when most of us have time to exercise.
Fantastic experience: Great ton of equipment from cardio, to cross fit, and weight training.
Fantastic experience: Thank you for your service.
Positive experience: Good gym for me. Plenty of squat racks, deadlift platforms, benches, barbells, dumbbells, and even barbell collars. Website hours are accurate to the gym. They have a “nothing but water” policy on the weight floor (converted from a large basketball court), so finish your pre-workout before passing the front desk. Seems the A/C is broken right now and was almost 80° inside before 0900 (it was only 83° outside). According to one of the employees, the A/C has been broken a cumulative 2.5 months of the last year. MWR or Garrison should probably do something about that before one of the… “more experienced” patrons has a stroke on an elliptical.
Negative experience: Not enough visitors to justify extending their hours was an email response I received when asking who I can petition to open gym longer in accordance with local gym hours in area. This should answer most other reviewers question as to why they aren’t open later. Honestly not a valid excuse imo.
Negative experience: Why are they only open for 4 hours on Saturday and completed closed on Sundays? Believe it or not some service members like to work out during the weekend
Negative experience: Nice gym, rude front desk staff member.
Fantastic experience: Flight was delayed, so decide hit the gym. Lost of gym equipment all very clean and like new
Positive experience: Some of the equipment is broken, why the swimming pool is closed for retires lap swimming? I understand that you are short on lifeguards, however, MWR 2023 budget was a plus, where is the money go?
Positive experience: Pretty decent gym.
Fantastic experience: It’s a great venue
Fantastic experience: This gym is clean and everyone invited is courteous and respectful of eachother at the desk and throughout the gym.
Positive experience: Three reasons for four stars instead of five: 1. Pool isn’t very accessible 2. No chalk 3. No cold plunge
Fantastic experience: Good gym
Positive experience: Scheduling for spouses makes it challenging to use the gym. I’ve been in lobby during active duty hours multiple times, and it is never so busy that working spouses couldn’t fit in there (I have not seen it even remotely packed). I wish they would do something about the hours.
Fantastic experience: A great place for a work out. Lots of machines and the staff is helpful.
Fantastic experience: Great gym. They let the Navy in, though, and the Navy stinks
Fantastic experience: Only complaint is make it 24/7 please!
Negative experience: The scheduling for spouses is incredibly challenging for working individuals, and it urgently requires adjustment or support. This issue significantly impacts their ability to balance work and personal responsibilities effectively. It is imperative that measures be taken to address this matter promptly, either by revising the hours or implementing supportive measures for spouses facing such scheduling constraints.
Fantastic experience: Gym is well kept, closes to clean during low usage hours. They constantly consider our feedback and work on adding new machines as they can. Gym includes squat racks, machines, treadmills. Has a lower level for rolling and classes, a pool that can be rented out, and a sauna that they constantly work to increase the hours that the sauna is open.
Negative experience: no longer allows gov employees....ouch
Fantastic experience: Clean, spacious, wonderful
Positive experience: Great facility, but some of the staff just need to go. The younger women are so rude and treat everyone as an annoyance.
Fantastic experience: Great staff and excellent gym
Positive experience: Someone hit my car while I was inside.. no note. Otherwise, gym was fine
Negative experience: Pool remains closed to retirees. Covid's "over", open it back up.
Fantastic experience: Been going here for years. They keep improving the equipment. Worst times to go would be 4-6 pm, but you can still achieve a workout. They have about 10 squat racks, several cable areas, and a large bench area. Staff is also really welcoming.
Negative experience: Schedule is horrible and not conducive to operational troops, clearly the welfare of the service members here is not being properly addressed. Critical failures by the garrison command team that should result in reprimands.
Fantastic experience: They have all that's necessary equipment some are outdated though but otherwise good gym
Negative experience: Only open till 7 (1900,) with constantly changing inconsistent pool hours.
Negative experience: Hours are ridiculous. How can you be the only operational gym on base and not give soldiers/ dependents 24 hour access. This is the worst gym I’ve been to. Please change the hours or open another fitness installation. Most of the troops don’t get off work till past 5 and this gym closes at 7.
Fantastic experience: In terms of military gyms, Gaffney Fitness Center stands as one of my all-time favorite Army gyms. The staff are friendly, the gyms stays busy, but clean. There are plenty of friends and good experiences to be made here at Gaffney.
Negative experience: Worst gym I have been to. Hours are limited especially on weekends. The benches are limited with the hours bottlenecking when people go in so the hours after work are super crowded. The free weight benches are very limited as well. Very little cables. Gym closed at 5:21 on 8-7-2023
Positive experience: quite a good gym, but needs some work, better than planet fitness tho :]
Positive experience: This is a well-equipped gym with plenty of cardio and strength training equipment. It even has a couple back rooms for weight machines and TRX training. It falls short of 5 stars because it doesn’t offer 24 hour access. Additionally, it’s standard hours are restricted for active duty family members which makes it a little more complicated and nearly mandates working out between 11 and 1900. It’s also closed on Sunday. I’d like to see more availability here with cleaning scheduled during non-peak hours so patrons can make better use of the good facilities they have to offer.
Positive experience: Great gym but the hours are horrible.
Fantastic experience: Plenty of equipment. Just wish it wasn't the only place on this huge base for MWR.
Fantastic experience: Solid gym facility. Plenty of every machine and piece of equipment.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, I actually find my trainer here on their website, Mr. Schaun, he has so much experience and is super professional, his gym is off base (Kicked Up Fitness) but is not far from Meade. It is important to contact him for pricing and his kickboxing & boxing classes they offer. I can't be more happy with my trainer and what Gaffney and Kicked Up Fitness gyms has to offer. In Gaffney the sauna still close!! Also I wish the pool were open for homeschool kids because they need to have activities and swimming is perfect for teenagers. sure hope they hurry and open the sauna.
Positive experience: The gym has everything I need. The only issue is that they close at 7pm on weekdays; only open for 8-12 On Saturdays ( which isn't appropriate because were off and should have a full day to go to the gym if we want) also its closed on Sundays. The hours are the strangest I've ever seen for a gym. Were Soldiers! We need the time to work out! Please change this. Thank you
Positive experience: The fitness center is a good one since COVID screwed up everyone's lives, it is understandable about showers and the sauna that is the only reason it is a 4
Fantastic experience: This gym has everything, and it's clean!
Fantastic experience: Front desk staff was extremely nice and helpful when answering all my questions.
Positive experience: Not a bad gym to use. No pool. Locker rooms are closed at this time due to COVID or lack of manpower...not sure which one it is anymore this far into the year 2022. The free weights and squat rack areas tend to get very busy during the peak workout hours but the treadmills and cardio machines are plentiful for the cardio warriors. Not much eye candy around so sorry ladies; you'll have to go elsewhere if you want pleasures for your eyes. Biggest issue has to be the operating hours! Hours are so limited for being a gym on a military base!
Negative experience: Staff were rude, the hours they are open are absolutely terrible and don’t match the areas schedule at all. Locker rooms aren’t open, I don’t ever recommend this gym
Fantastic experience: Lots of new equipment and the staff are very helpful. Currently open for Active Military 0500-0900 DoD Civ 1100-1900
Negative experience: The manager is AMAZING!!!! She's kind and very receptive to feedback on equipment. Incredibly disappointing how much doesn't work. Weight section is fine. Cardio during peak times is almost impossible due to lack of working products.
Positive experience: Why isn't the Sauna open, please for the love of F sake open that mofo!
Negative experience: Machines are trash. Vibe is all off. Hours are whack. Its Army, what do ya expect? Base has its commissary open late so fatties can grab their twinkies.. Its alright Army, choose the twinky. The absolute minimum standard for gym hours is 0530-2200. Reasonable is 24 hours.
Positive experience: Good gym, but it's not exactly what you would call quality. I will say for a small base like Meade it isn't bad. Usually crowded in the morning, but they do a nice job of cycling people when it's busy and keeping the place clean and safe.
Positive experience: Just trying to understand their hours? Why do they close on 12pm on Sat. and are closed all day Sunday? I would think a on-base gym of this size would be able to stay open longer on the weekends. Just disappointing to not be able to workout in the afternoon on weekends.
Positive experience: Machines are a bit dated, pool isn't open, men's locker room is closed. It's barely operating.
Positive experience: It's aight... Cardio heavy but basically wasted if everyother machine can't be used. May as well place half the machines and leave the space for folks to move around. The equipment isn't newer but it does what it does.. Ive seen much better and much worse. It has smaller rooms for mma training and classes but I give it 3 stars for operating hours and civilian restrictions. I mean.. In general open from 8-12 on Saturday and closed Sunday No Bueno but... It's still good for the soldiers and that's what's important and... Free to use.
Fantastic experience: Better than golds in every way
Fantastic experience: What an amazing experience! It's been years since I worked out, and this was a good place to get back into shape!
Fantastic experience: What an amazing experience! It's been years since I worked out, and this was a good place to get back into shape!
Positive experience: Their locker room remains closed. They its due to funding! Very sad!!!!
Fantastic experience: Man, I used to workout here in the 80s, when I was stationed at Kimbrough. I loved it!
Positive experience: Thia gym has what you need, but way too many people after work. This installation needs at least one more fitness center of this size to accommodate service members.
Positive experience: Showers, pool, and sauna are still closed. Retirees and civilians can use the weight room 11 am and on during weekdays. Clean, masks mandatory, wipes available, and a great variety of weight paraphernalia including those for aerobic training.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym!
Fantastic experience: Great gym.
Fantastic experience: Staff is friendly and helpful.
Negative experience: Strict on mask policy, Not enough Machines and cables available and limited hours
Positive experience: Plenty of weights and cardio equipment to get the job done.
Positive experience: Always and excellent discipline facility. Wish there was a a Captains chair for shoulder work and full day operations on Saturday. Great spot°°
Positive experience: I wish you didn't have to wear a mask over your nose on the treadmills but everything else is great.
Positive experience: Good
Positive experience: Overall fairly good. Staff is really nice, and the place is clean. I will say it'd be far more convenient if they were open later, and on weekends (even if it's just a few hours). Also I'd like to comment that they play pretty depressing top pop hits in the afternoon.
Positive experience: Covid measures in place to allow people to still hit the gym. Social distance, limit to capacity, and time restrictions of 60min. Staff is polite and happy to explain all the rules and procedures. Lockers closed during covid but bathrooms are open for use. Only clear liquids in the gym.
Positive experience: The free weight area is large and has ample equipment. They have a great variety of weight machines too as well as a separate area with a bunch of power racks, platforms and Olympic weight plates. There are a ton of cardio options but it always seems as if there are 2 to 3 treadmills out of order. I haven't used the rest of the gym but I've heard the pool is great and I know there are rooms downstairs for group fitness and such.
Positive experience: I really like the gym when it isn’t super crowded! Plenty of cardio machines, and a decent amount of weight machines. A good amount of space dedicated to free weights too. I see a lot of people using the pool. There is a lot of space downstairs too when classes are not happening! I wish it were open to everyone now, but I get the need to control the amount of people coming in (pandemic and what not!)... I do wish the sauna was a little bigger, but overall it’s pretty decent.
Fantastic experience: The staff and communication with patrons are all top-notch! Their equipment is updated, too. Lots of new free weight racks, machines, and more. The pool schedule is gradually opening up to more days/times per week. By far, it is the best gym in the area.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym, great variety of exercise equipment!
Fantastic experience: Really big open space and more machines than I could ask for. Going to be spending some good time here.
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Large open area for cardio. Staff are friendly and go out of their way to help out.
Fantastic experience: For an MWR Army/Navy facility it is great. To elaborate, for the projects it's five stars.
Fantastic experience: Awesome base gym! Can't wait until they get back to normal operations!
Fantastic experience: Great gym with all the essentials
Positive experience: Friendly and cooperative staff. Decent selection of machines to use.
Positive experience: Note: one star taken away only four hours of operation This gym has most everything I need, and parking is never a problem as they have plenty of overflow spots. Unfortunately, locker rooms can no longer be accessed, and hours of operation aren’t consistent. Of course that’s probably more of an Army problem than the MWR’s, lol. Hours are hit and miss when it comes to this gym being open for disabled vets. The last two times I went they were closed for one reason or another. As a result I may still use this gum, but due to this frustration I decided to get a $24/mo, all-inclusive membership at Planet Fitness whose hours of operation are more reliable for disabled retirees. This also frees up more space and machines or two for active-duty soldiers.
Positive experience: Made some love improvements during quarantine
Positive experience: Decent gym. Staff is friendly. It does get pretty hot in there, especially in the summer. The fans aren’t that great, but it’s a free gym, so I can’t complain too much. They have a bunch of equipment. Could have more of the same equipment in some areas (like leg press- there’s only one), but it’s an overall solid gym.
Negative experience: Broken equipment, a million people. Avoid
Positive experience: Best gym on Ft. Meade!
Fantastic experience: Great place to see ...... (my eyes )
Fantastic experience: Great gym, benchs will get full during peak houre, as everyone and their mom goes their after work however its adapted to this by having an entire room in the back devoted to deadlifts and squats, its awesome.
Fantastic experience: Best free gym in the world!
Fantastic experience: Equipment in great condition and so much to choose from.
Fantastic experience: Gaffney fitness center is great I love it because I don't have to wait for a treadmill to walk or run. They have excellent equipment for exercising all up-to-date it's a great place to go in exercise swim.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with a ton of amenities. Even at their peak hours there is still room to complete your workout. Even the phsyical animal Alex Williams could break a sweat in the gym and if not, the sauna. If your a swimmer, the pool seems to always have open lanes to get your miles in. I am impressed in the number of treadmills they have inside. Lockers are daily use only.
Fantastic experience: Plenty of options to bring the sexy back.
Fantastic experience: Good gym and a lot of equipment. Once you learn to navigate the busier times you're good. Wish they stayed open later
Fantastic experience: Very clean and has excellent work out equipment!
Fantastic experience: Love the water aerobics classes!
Fantastic experience: Best free gym in the world!
Positive experience: Decent equipment but def is past due for expansion
