Alaska Functional Fitness: Opinions

Negative experience: Disappointing Experience for Traveling Bodybuilder – Not Visitor-Friendly I’m a bodybuilder visiting from California and was looking forward to training here after seeing photos online. I called ahead and was told a day pass was $30—pricey, but I was willing to pay for high-quality equipment. I took an Uber to the gym (around $40 round trip) expecting to train. When I arrived—just 15 minutes after calling—the front desk staff told me their internet was down and they couldn’t process card payments. I offered to pay cash, but was told that wasn’t allowed. I asked, “So I can’t work out here?” and she confirmed that was correct. She called the manager, explained the situation, and he still refused to allow me entry—even though I was there, had cash in hand, and was trying to be flexible. No courtesy pass, no workaround, no customer service whatsoever. I’ve trained at gyms across the country, and I’ve never once been denied a workout like this—especially when I was willing to pay. It was a complete waste of time and money. To make things worse, they have a strange policy where you must remove your shoes at the entrance and only wear shoes that have never been worn outside. Definitely something to be aware of if you’re dropping in. I rarely leave reviews like this, but I want to give fellow athletes and traveling lifters a heads-up. This gym may have nice equipment, but it’s run in a way that clearly doesn’t accommodate or respect visitors.

Negative experience: I travel regularly for work to include AK. This gym doesn't want you to even look in their direction if you don't live there full time and want to do a full year membership. Go anywhere else.

Positive experience: Can't speak for everyone obviously and of course individual experiences vary but the couple of times that my wife and I have gone here have been pretty good. We do have experience with quite a few different gyms in different states and everything was top notch only issue we had was for some reason when we went to buy a day pass the person working the counter only charged us for one when there were very clearly 2 of us standing there wanting to workout and then a while later the manager comes up and tells us we have to pay if we want to workout and that we only paid for one day pass. Well we had tried when we first came in so customer service needs a little improvement but all in all still a good gym.

Negative experience: this was hands down the worst customer relations experience I've ever had at a gym. I've worked out in gyms in six different states. I was very impressed with their equipment and the person who worked the counter who had the unfortunate task of telling me the two times I went there during my work hours that the manager was out at that time and then when I went there on a Friday during the hours she was supposed to be there. they only work till 4:30 that day so they left early. I finally took the time midday today to go ask about a membership and the woman looked at me like I stepped in s*** on the way in and told me that they're no longer offering any memberships at all because they've had a huge influx of people I looked around. there were maybe eight or nine people in the two-story gym with dozens of machines & 10 different areas to work out. I'm really not sure what that was about, but it's insane. their membership area on their gym website in no way mentions anything about restricted membership numbers or anything like that. and the idea of turning away somebody in March because you've got a few New Year's stragglers for people who made that New Year's resolution that they're going to stick to for sure. only you won't get any money out of them past April its crazy to me. maybe things will change but if you like being treated like crap and having to take your shoes off as soon as you walk in the door, crappy little cubbies and set of lockers and from what I read and other negative reviews it's not a great environment to work out in depending on who's working that day and their hours are complete b******* it looks like they spend most the time polishing the machines while the business is closed or something and then they don't want to have to deal with people actually working out there during the day so they keep the numbers low. it's the exact opposite business model you're supposed to have where you actually collect memberships because invariably people fall off. nobody sticks around longer than a couple months at a time. it's not really possible to convey how upset I am especially to put into writing. I've never been told that a gums not taking new members. the place wasn't crowded at all. there was a handful of customers in there working out. so at least for now and for the time being in 2025 in March: don't try to get a membership here or if you do expect to be treated like garbage. I was there to offer them money. I was going to pay for a full year. but I just got shown the door instead. Great job. hopefully you guys go out of business and somebody who has half a brain can buy the thing and run it properly.

Negative experience: Went there to get a membership she was nice and welcoming and referred me to her supervisor who I called to tell her I want 3 months membership cause I am not a resident here I am here for 3 months to work and she said sorry we don’t have 3 months I am like how ?? How come there is no months to months or 3 months deal ‍♂️ my advice change the person that does marketing for you cause you HAVE TO HAVE one year commitment otherwise u can’t join that’s so dumb , so if you are not from Alaska and here to work 3-6 months you can’t join them , anyhow Alaska fitness has sauna and steam room and many other stuff plus their attitude is great , they offer you 3 day free pass to join and try the machines and everything and then decide , LEARN FROM THEM !!!

Negative experience: Don’t believe the website. No day passes or memberships available at this time. Went by to workout for the day and got turned away at the door even though the gym was almost empty. Called to manager to ask if this was a mistake since the website says “free 3 day trail,” he confirmed and didn’t offer to make it right. Left a bad taste.

Negative experience: Rude staff! Cold locker rooms, The place is very uninviting. upon signing up the girl behind the counter told me that I can cancel any time and then when I tried to cancel a few months later because I needed to leave to take care of my mother they wouldn’t let me cancel and charge me for the rest of the year and wouldn’t even take one month off super bad business practices do not go to this gym, horrible vibes

Negative experience: Just took a cab here to pay their outrageous drop in rate bc I’m desperate after traveling all week and wanted a really good workout that you just can’t get at a hotel. Come to find out, they’re currently not accepting drop ins or new members… there were three people in the gym. Just wasted a ton of money on a cab to be denied access. Will be taking my business elsewhere.

Negative experience: Sad to write this review, on the positive side the man who works the front desk is awesome, and the equipment is top notch. That being said I tried to cancel my membership which I read on their website costs a $75 fee (or did when I signed up). Unfortunately after 6 months I decided to cancel my membership and they are going to charge me for the rest of the year. It seems odd that there's no possible way to cancel the membership especially after reading about the $75 cancellation fee and I was not told anything when I signed up. I just walked in and got signed up in less than 2 minutes. Would love it to be fixed because I liked the vibes at the gym but paying for 6 months of a gym I'm not going to is super wack.

Positive experience: The staff and facility are pretty good, but if you work any sort of sporadic schedule, just find another gym (maybe Alaska Fitness or Body Renew). AK Functional Fitness’ hours are some of the most restrictive in town. If you like to work out later in the evening… forget about that here… especially on the weekends??? I paid the year upfront when I initially joined, and I don’t intend to renew that commitment when my membership terms out.

Positive experience: Looks like an amazing place, but apparently they arent offering memberships or passes at this time. Look elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: Great gym, has all the equipment you'll need and good knowledgeable staff. Everyone I've met there knows what they're doing and is really nice. Less expensive than somewhere like the Alaska Club but still manages to be a nicer gym. Worth it! Ask Jeremiah for free protein shakes.

Fantastic experience: Places like this are few and far between with the quality environment they provide. I really can't seem to come up with any sort of downside of AFF. It easily is the most up to date fitness facility in town that has anything and everything you could ask for. The staff is always friendly and eager to help with anything. The other members of the gym are just as friendly and open And to top it off the gym is lead by management that cares about its gym members

Negative experience: My experience with Alaska Functional Fitness started off alright. However, after learning they charged my card $30 for a day pass I was pretty upset with the entire situation. Instead of them offering me the 3 free day pass they took this as an opportunity to take my money. When I called them to clarify why I had been charged so much for one hour worth of time in their gym. I learned, that because they are a privately owned gym its justifiable to charge someone who doesn't live in the area and was only using it one time, $30 for an hour session is okay. The gym equipment was nice and it was a clean environment however that does not justify charging someone $30 for one hour. I also made it very clear that I was only using it the one time for an hour, nothing more. When speaking with someone this morning on 2/7/2020 at 6:37 am I did not get a pleasant response from the individual who took my call. They were raising their voice at me and pretty much telling me they didn't care. I would have been a returning client however after this experience I will never step foot in this gym again nor will I ever recommend this gym to anyone that I know. I was merely looking for someone on their end to understand where I was coming from. Even if they had offered me back half my money or a free future session I would have understood and been okay with the situation. However, the individual on the other end of the phone dismissed me as if I was an annoyance. Make your future transactions right! Alaska Functional Fitness I am disappointed in your customer service. No matter how nice your equipment is, it will never justify you charging someone $30 for an hour session. Best Regards DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER!!!!!!!

Fantastic experience: My wife and I own a bodybuilding/powerlifting gym in Cali. Came to town to visit and found this gym on Google. ABSOLUTELY immaculate gym. Cleanest facility and most well equipped gym we have ever visited. Kristina and Wil (staff) were so nice and informative. Multiple times while we were working, we stopped and repeated to ourselves how great the gym was. Can’t recommend this place enough.

Fantastic experience: Worked out in a lot of gyms in my 45 yrs of training & this is hands down the best gym I have ever trained at. It’s a serious fitness atmosphere without the intimidation thing going on. Excellent clean top of the line equipment. Management & members are all friendly & helpful. And no foo foo Zumba type stuff that you have to listen too while you train

Fantastic experience: Awesome gym with state of the art equipment!

Rob Barnett 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: A lot of time, thought and money went into this gym. Plenty of weights (200lb dumbells), Machines and cardio equipment. They seem to cater toward the serious body builder or power lifter of all calibers. Don't go in looking for the hot yoga room or the next aerobics class, but expect to be using the top of the line equipment to enhance your physique. For the people that gave the Gym less than 5 stars due to how they were treated. I feel you have to give respect to get respect. Don't go in disrespecting someone's dreams and hard work because you feel entitled after paying your fees/dues.

Fantastic experience: I've worked-out in a lot of gyms in my days. This is by far, the best facility I've ever worked-out in! What is so great about this gym: 1) The equipment is pristine and carefully curated. 2) The atmosphere is light, bright, clean and thoughtfully laid-out. 3) This gym knows who it is: It's machines, free weights, functional and cardio... That's it! 4) Shoes policy - Bring a pair of shoes! No outside shoes allowed inside on the floor. This keeps the floors incredibly clean and new. Nothing is worse in a gym than exercising on dirty floors. 5) Protein Shake Bar - You don't see those much anymore and they serve 'em up here! 6) Lockers and Locker Rooms - The finest you'll ever see!

Fantastic experience: One of the premier gyms in Anchorage. A lot of new equipment with a lot of variety and redundancy. Not as crowded as many of the other gyms so you can get in and out fast.
