Fantastic experience: The youth wrestling club/class drew us in and continues to impress. The coaching is top notch based mat experience and a unique ability to fluidly meet participant’s ages and abilities in a fun and safe environment. The skills and gains week over week are great and our kids are eager to stop in for class.

Fantastic experience: Great place to roll. Coach Tim and Maia were very nice and helpful. Instruction and training is great! Good group of skilled people to roll and train with.

Positive experience: My 6-year-old was excited to start at High Noon BJJ, but the experience was mixed. While the facility is clean and the coaches are skilled, newer and younger students seemed to get less attention. A couple of incidents involving rough pairings and lack of supervision left my son discouraged and unwilling to continue. That said, Coach Maia was professional and waived the cancellation fee, which we appreciated. With better support for beginners, this could be a great place to train.

High Noon BJJ & Fitness LLC

Thank you for your feedback! We truly felt we were attentive to your son, as we are with all (especially our little grapplers!) of our students, but understand your perspective. With regard to "rough pairings" please note that BJJ is, at heart, a combative martial art. We want our students to be strong, capable, and confident out in the real world and that requires at least some discomfort (i.e. rough play) in the course of training.

Fantastic experience: I dropped in a couple times while I was in town visiting. Had a blast. Everybody was welcoming and coaches were awesome. If you‘re looking for no-nonsense, practical, situation-based rolls, this is the spot. Can’t recommend this gym enough.

Thank you, Brian! You're an excellent student and a tough roll. Come back and visit anytime!

Fantastic experience: Highnoon BJJ is a great training environment, with competitive and knowledgeable martial artists. It’s a friendly environment and a great place to learn martial arts.

Fantastic experience: It’s quite a place. Parking is a little difficult to navigate if you’ve never been there but once you figure it out it’s all down hill from there. They have a pretty good group of women that train consistently as well as female instructors. I went here a couple of times for Jiu Jitsu Jam, seiminars out on by local high achieving black belts. They were very kind and offered quite a bit of insight to my game, body style, and technique. I haven’t been able to attend a normal class but I’m pretty sure it’s just as great as the women’s events.

Fantastic experience: TL;DR: I trained here for a year before having to move away for school, and can say confidently that High Noon is the most fun I have ever had exercising. If you're in the DC area looking to get into grappling (wrestling, Judo, BJJ) or continue grappling, I cannot recommend this gym more highly. I still miss training here months after leaving. More detailed review: I think the two things made High Noon special; its ability to balance intensity and fun and its development of a true community. In my experience from training various sports, I have found gyms/coaches are either kind but too lax in their standards (so you get complacent) or intense but jackasses (so you lose motivation to train). The culture at High Noon finds the sweet-spot in between--you are pushed to improve yourself, but it is always in a supportive, friendly environment, from the coaches down to the other students. I found myself wanting to do my best every practice because I didn't want to let anyone down by being a bad training partner or not respecting the consistently excellent feedback you get from the coaches. I usually hate when businesses claim to be a community--usually it's just rhetorical BS to get away with chicanery--but High Noon genuinely has a culture and community, and it is wonderful. The other gym members are uniformly friendly, thoughtful people. Any time I asked, someone took time after training to work through something with me (or kindly said they had to get home). I never felt unsafe training with another member, and they looked out for my safety. I have realized later that several times a more experienced gym member proactively let go of a submission or grip because I reacted improperly to it when I was new to the sport. BJJ always involves risk with it, and so knowing your partners are looking out for you over their own ego made training here feel safe and more enjoyable. The coaches are fantastic. They clearly regard themselves as students of the sport still, and I often heard them discussing recent high-level matches and the techniques they learned about from studying them. They strike the aforementioned balance of being supportive and holding you to a high standard. I never found their feedback unhelpful, nor thought they were being unfair when they told me I was being unfocused or lax while training, which is not my experience in a lot of other athletic contexts. They also offer a lot of personalized feedback--I tried to correct mistakes I was making quickly and they would always be sure to both compliment the progress and help me see other areas I needed to improve on. Thanks to their help, I never felt like I was stagnating. The culture of the gym does a wonderful job treating you as a person, not a customer. I had an infection that took me off the mats for 6-7 weeks, and the only concern they had was that I was safe and properly reimbursed for the missed time. They even retroactively refunded me a week because I had not yet suspended the membership the first week I was off the mats because I hadn't realized the extent I would be out.

Fantastic experience: I had the pleasure to compete along side Tim Dawson at an event last year, hence how we met. From the moment you meet him, he is an outgoing, professional yet personable individual. You can see he truly cares about this sport and bettering others Last Tuesday I reached out to Tim to ask if I could come cross train. My home gym is Enlisted Nine Fight Company, but without hesitation Tim said “not a problem man, come on by”. I was greeted by their front desk personnel with very warm and welcoming energy. The staff were very professional and the facility was immaculate! The staff ensured you felt comfortable and explained where everything was at. At no time did I feel like an outsider from another gym. I participated in both their No-GI classes. Tim is wealth of knowledge and a phenomenal instructor. Took the time to go in great detail with techniques he was showing and answer any questions students had. Tim had partnered me up with a gentlemen named Nate (High Noons wrestling coach). He took the time to help me understand how classes worked and gave me really good looks when we rolled. I sincerely appreciate that warm hospitality this facility and Tim gave me and look forward to cross training here in the future!

Fantastic experience: Can't help but love this place... The coaches are enthusiastic and professional and give the kids a dynamic hour of full on exercise, skills, and sparring. There are plenty of classes for our three kids to choose from and my husband is hooked as well. We go almost 3-4x a week and I never have to nag the kids to get ready because they are ready to go each day. They are starving for dinner afterwards and sleep really well from the exercise.

Mr. Rosario's Class 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Me and the kids were members at another local BJJ/JUDO gym in Springfield for years, in search of a new gym we went to almost every local gym in the area. HN meets us at our skill level and coaches us accordingly, my daughter wants to stay active, my son gets the highest level of Judo and Jujitsu coaching and uses his skills with much success in local and national level tournaments, and for me in my mid-40s who wrestled a lifetime ago, I stay active and healthy (old person friendly). As a teacher for 17 years, I appreciate good instructors who individualize learning and foster a great environment. The gym is clean and the schedule is extensive with work and the kids in other sports we always have a class.

Fantastic experience: I dropped in at HN BJJ during a 1-week stay in the area. There are several sessions with different coaches each week, who organize their training in a way suiting their respective style. This means I got to do some stand up drills in a classical technique-drill setting, ecological style classes where you're presented with a problem/ position and go from there, balls-to-the-wall sparring sessions and just about anything in-between. Considering that I came back several times, it's fair to say that I had a great time! Also, their GI looks rad. 5/5!

Fantastic experience: HNBJJ is the best! I came in with very little grappling experience, and have found a supportive and challenging community of coaches and teammates at all levels. As an active duty military member, training at HNBJJ has also helped me stay conditioned and hit high scores on my fitness assessments. Overall, can’t recommend enough.

Fantastic experience: excellent judo club and program. Sensei Chris round is formerly from the Pedros judo center and as such has worked with and trained alongside many Olympians and world team members. His coaching expertise spans both judo technical, mental preparation and athlete development. Classes are fun but still challenging, the club members are all friendly and all open to training with any ability/intensity level. I highly recommend stopping by high noon if you are ever in the DC/Alexandria area.

Fantastic experience: I meant to write this awhile ago but never got around to it for some reason, so here goes. I’ve been here for about a year now, and this is by far my favorite gym that I’ve ever been at. Between the Tuesday/Thursday night no-gi practices with Coach Tim, the Friday night gi practices with Coach Graham and Monday/Wednesday night gi practices with Coach Leah, the noon no-gi practices with Coach Maia, judo practices with Sensei Chris, and Sunday wrestling practices with Coach Nate, there is no shortage of options for me to get some grappling in to accommodate my always-changing schedule. Being able to watch some of Coach Tyler’s intro program has also taught/reminded me of many concepts that are vital to my game. The weights being in the upstairs area also means that I am able to come in and exercise even on days when I’m not fully up to it. Last but certainly not least, the community vibe here is amazing. No matter when you are here, you will always see at least a few smiles on people’s faces, and that is beyond invaluable.

Negative experience: All they care about is your $500

High Noon BJJ & Fitness LLC

Hi Stephanie! I spoke with my staff and learned that you came in for a free trial, participated in class, and then proceeded to harass my front desk staff because we were unwilling to change our pricing structure just for you. I'm sorry the program isn't within your price range, but it was really inappropriate to treat our staff that way following a FREE trial session where you reportedly enjoyed the training and were treated with kindness and respect. Do you argue with gas station attendants about the price of gas? Grocery store cashiers about the price of groceries? I imagine not, so why was your behavior acceptable simply because we're a martial arts academy? I hope you reflect deeply on your poor behavior and consider behaving with common sense and decency the next time you walk into a place of business.

Fantastic experience: Top notch BJJ school, best of the best in the DMV. Professor Maia is an absolute unit and a very knowledgeable teacher who will calf slice you into another dimension, while simultaneously teaching your children how to RNC you. Professor Leah is another absolute unit who will make you tap to mount pressure alone. See you at open mat! xoxo

Brian Tran 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Cliffnotes - Top tier gym in the DMV - Knowledgeable and skilled coaches who take the time to help you develop - Great environment where you're welcomed if you're willing to work hard - classes at all hours - HAS SHOWERS/Gym Equipment I've been at High Noon since it first started (going onto 6 years now) and only left briefly when I had to move to a different city. I'm back here again since I'm in Nova and it feels the same even though the gym has grown immensely (in terms of members and size). It even has showers now!!! This is an insane perk for a gym. In addition, there is a power rack, barbell, air bike, and some other equipment I can't think of. So not only can you train bjj, but you can also become a unit like the head coach (Tim). Ample mat space too- 2 levels. Open mat is on the first ground level and since there are 2 levels, there are concurrent classes running often at times. Regarding the coaches at High Noon, they are knowledgeable and take their time to help anyone that is willing to put in the work- before class, during, and after class. After open mat you'll probably see me and other people working through some stuff with either Tim (owner and head coach) and any of the other coaches like Tyler or Nate. When I say they care about your development, I mean it as long as you're willing to put in the work. A good environment is predicated on the leadership at the top, and this is absolutely true at High Noon and exemplified in the students. There are a range of classes from nogi, wrestling, gi, and etc. The training is based on intelligent programming and predicated on latest science on skill acquisition. You won't see people wasting their time going through step by step methods of teaching/learning like you did in the past. I.E. "So you do this when he does this. Now I want you guys to drill that 5 times and switch." However About the people, everyone is super welcoming and Friedly here. I can't say I've had a bad training partner here. If I did, they probably didn't stay long and left since the gym naturally weeds out people that are toxic. Training partners at High Noon are receptive to feedback and you'll always get good training in whenever you come in for a class or open mat. All affiliations are welcome at the open mat by the way which gives you a chance to roll with other people (most gyms from what I'm aware aren't this inviting- some are afraid of their members getting outclassed for example). I'm an average guy in his early 30s, but I honestly believe most of grappling development (Based on comments wherever I go to train- i.e. Japan, Portugal, around the US) has been because of Tim, Tyler, Nate, and Matt. From a legend in the sport of mma (known for his grappling) and also bjj- comment about me (Pic included) "Brian very technical and fun to practice thank you Thanks for the roll oss."

Fantastic experience: Excellent instruction from Sensei Chris Round and High Noon Judo! I dropped in for a class recently. While I have been in Judo off and on in my life, I found Sensei Chris Round to be one of the best coaches I have witnessed. He is very well rounded and very knowledgeable on the art as well as practical applications for the grappler or Judo competitor. Oh, one more thing, High Noon and its student are very welcoming.

Fantastic experience: Phenomenal facility, amazing and supportive coaches, and friendliest members I've ever met at a gym. I've tried out a bunch of places and this is one of my top favorites. I originally only came for the open mat (highly recommend) but realized this was the only place I wanted to train. I live across the street from another gym but commute 20-30 min just to train here. Athletes and coaches are serious and competitive while still being so friendly and welcoming to beginners and part-time hobbyists. I wish I had found this place sooner.

Fantastic experience: The place to train in the Arlington area. Been doing BJJ and martial arts about 18 years and every time I am in town and can come by I try to drop in. Great for the black belt competitor all the way down to the brand new first day student. The classes are filled with friendly outgoing students and you are always made to feel part of the family. Can’t recommend Tim and his gym enough.

Fantastic experience: Judo instructor, Chris, is a quality coach, for both basic developmental, and elite level judo. Chris holds high rank in judo, and BJJ, and has masterful understanding of the transition gap that is so easy to miss between the two arts. He will provide safe, effective teaching for any level. I highly recommend him, and this school, for any level of practicioner.

Jay Chung 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Was looking for a place to learn judo in the DMV and heard about this place via reddit. After doing some research, Sensei Chris is an elite level coach and competitor and it definitely feels that way in practice. Im pretty sure other judo places in the area will just teach you cookie cutter basics, while Sensei Chris is equipping you for chess. Sensei gauges what to focus on for you and runs an extremely efficient session and always emphasizes safety. What I appreciate most is how passionate and knowledgable sensei is. I learned how deep the judo iceberg could be. For those that are looking to train judo in the DMV you have hit the jackpot. This place is a steal.

Fantastic experience: I went to a week-long camp at High Noon. I found excellent instruction, both from Chris and the guest instructors he brought in. The students at High Noon have a strong gripping system and you can always find tough rounds of randori. Fantastic experience: High Noon truly has it all - BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Yoga, a Kids Program, and more. It is in a convenient location to DC, Arlington, Alexandria, and the rest of Northern Virginia - with plenty of free parking. Two things about High Noon truly stand out - the culture, and the commitment of the coaches to continue to learn new skills and pass them on to the students. I think both of these speak to how well High Noon carries on the tradition that David Jacobs started. I have trained at many big name gyms around the DMV, USA, and the world - and High Noon stands out with how welcoming and friendly it is, not only on the first day, but continuing years down the road. At the same time, people train extremely hard - there is a place at this gym for everyone from the casual practitioner to the serious competitor. Coaches Tim, Matt, and the rest of the BJJ coaching staff regularly travel to train and compete, as well as continuously study to pass along the latest and greatest in techniques and tactics. The same can be said of the Judo program run by Sensei Chris. Like many BJJ players, I have cross trained in Judo, but it wasn't until I found the program at High Noon that I found one that truly complemented my BJJ, with Judo classes 5 days a week. This is a modern, competitive Judo program, but like BJJ, also is a great fit for a new or more casual player. High Noon has great mats, and plenty of crash pads, so nobody has to worry about getting crushed by throws or on old mats. I am proud to train at this gym, and highly encourage anyone looking to get involved in martial arts to try it out.

I have been involved with Judo for the past 12 years in many facets: as a student, competitor, state licensed instructor as well as a judo parent. I made a great decision to join High Noon. It is a positive, competitive and fun environment for all ages and experience levels.

Fantastic experience: High Noon has the most complete grappling program around, including an excellent judo program and a great kids program. Nowhere else in the area offers judo five days a week! Fantastic experience: I switched to High Noon over a year ago and it was the best BJJ decision ever!!! I knew about High Noon way before I switched gyms and I always loved how their schedule adapts to modern BJJ with a blend of old school. Several of my past teammates have trained in some sort of capacity and have said nothing but nice things about the instructors/training. When I came to High Noon, I thought I had solid fundamentals, but l soon found out that my BJJ needed a lot of work. Although it was frustrating at first trying to acclimate into a new school, I started to see progress all thanks to the great instructors and teammates that have no ego. Whatever your BJJ goals are, High Noon has a schedule that can help!

Fantastic experience: This review is specifically for the Judo program at High Noon. The lead instructor, Sensei Chris Round, who trained under the Judo legend and Olympian Jimmy Pedro for many years and was himself a nationally ranked competitor, is exceptionally knowledgeable about modern competitive Judo. He offers a structured and scientific curriculum based on the Pedro system of training and coaching, with a particular emphasis on grip fighting. No random "technique of the day" style of training here! There is a logical progression in the lessons that methodically build upon the previous instruction. The training is well-structured and easy to follow - first warmups and light movement/throw entry drills, followed by highly technical, yet comprehensible instruction, then it is time for positional sparring of intermediate intensity and eventually full-on sparring for advanced students, capped by 15 minutes or so of Q&A time for the students. Throughout the lesson, Sensei Chris and other instructors observe the students carefully to ensure safety and offer helpful tips and suggestions to perfect the techniques. Moreover, he is a kind, accessible, and honorable character to whom I would entrust my children without hesitation. I recommend the program highly.

Fantastic experience: We (me, wife, 6 year old son) moved to the NoVA area at the end of September 2021 and within a week or two we had our son enrolled at High Noon. It’s the end of December and this place feels like a second home for my son and I. Tim, Matt & Maya are the type of instructors that your children will respect, learn from & have fun with. The instructor to student ratio is roughly 1:4 and as the class sizes have grown, management is very quick to respond with additional instructors. On Saturday AM classes, the parents are encouraged to participate (to their comfort level) on some of the drills/games. It’s an awesome way to help us parents understand the movements and techniques our children learn; something to practice together at home. Also, playing grappling-inspired sharks and minnows with a dozen kids and their parents is a pretty unique, hysterical & awesome way to start the weekend.

He is a down to earth and genuine person. He has provided great insights into my tactics and techniques after our matches. He is a top level coach and instructor. Do not miss the opportunity to learn under him.

Fantastic experience: High Noon BJJ and Fitness has a clean and welcoming facility. The trainers here are knowledgeable, patient, and chill. This is an open family environment where I feel that my 6 yr old child is safe, learning, and being pushed to his full capacity. On Sundays parents are encouraged to train with their children, and it truly is an amazing workout. My son loved seeing me get on the mats with him. Ive done BJJ before and as a woman I have always hated being on filthy mats or picking up a lot of loose hair from previous clients, but at High Noon the matts were exceptionally clean. The music was child friendly as well. Lastly, the environment was welcoming to its guest. Highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to get in shape with low impact to previous injuries and or looking for good healthy family activities.

Fantastic experience: I travel for work and like to train on the road, so when I found myself in the area I stopped by to visit High Noon; and let me say that if you live in the area, or are visiting, this is an excellent place to train at! The level of Jiu-Jitsu here was really high and the instruction was excellent. I'm a white belt and, for the class I attended, one of the owners (who is a high level blackbelt) paired up with me, gave me great feedback, and conceptually broke down the moves for me very well. If you ever do drop-ins (specially as a white belt), you know that's unheard of! This to me alone speaks volumes about the gym and the culture there. After the class I was welcomed to come back whenever I was in the area. The facility is also really cool and probably one of my favorites that I've seen! In short, if you're looking for a place to train, I highly recommend High Noon, you can't go wrong with them!

Fantastic experience: Welcoming and friendly in a technique and hard work driven atmosphere. I dropped in for a class while in the annandale area run by instructor Tim Dawson, who was great at explaing the class techniques, and instructing through the subtle adjustments. Mats, workout and waiting area were clean, organized and presentable. I would recommend anyone living in the DC area interested in Brazilian jiu jitsu to check this location out.

Fantastic experience: Tim and Matt are not only good Jiu-Jitsu instructors, but they are also good people. Its enjoyable to learn from them as instructors as well as know them as individuals. They are friendly and tough, and their classes are just like them. The team is very close, yet they are welcoming to everyone. They will push you to greater heights and support you in every way. I learn and improve not only because of the great coaches but also the great training partners. I love training at High Noon BJJ & Fitness because of the culture and atmosphere, the coaches and the team. I would recommend training here to anyone.

Fantastic experience: This place is awesome! Tim and Matt has created a fun but hard working environment. I have been able to focus on my competition and athletic needs while having fun. This place has a great balance of competition focus but also working with students individual goals. Whether getting into shape, learning, as a hobby or competition this academy has it all.

Fantastic experience: High noon is the best gym you will find. Whether you’re just starting out and looking to learn an effective martial art for self defense or a skilled practitioner striving to take it to the next level, they got you covered.

Fantastic experience: As a woman starting bjj, it's been very difficult to find a space that I feel comfortable learning something completely new in. However this gym has been great so far, I've never felt singled out or uncomfortable and there's a decent amount of women who attend classes regularly. I appreciate the coaches' teaching styles as they make the best use of class time to hone in on the techniques being taught that day and are always happy to help you troubleshoot the move.

Fantastic experience: High Noon is the best new BJJ gym in the NoVa area. Matt and Tim are fantastic instructors that are dedicated to making you improve whether you are a brand new student or a seasoned veteran.

Fantastic experience: The gym has everything that you could want; a friendly, tight knit, and welcoming atmosphere, plenty of mat space, a lobby with a television to keep children occupied (while you train), a strength and condition program individually catered to your needs, a large group of active competitors (if that's your thing), high level black belts under David Jacobs teaching and training on the mats, a morning class, a large student body consisting of higher ranked belts - and beginners too, and very reasonably priced and competitive tuition. Instruction is top notch - they don't throw random techniques at you - instruction flows naturally from one lesson to the next with "themes" being implemented consistently. The schedule offers gi and no gi (heel hooks allowed) training. They even have a wrestling class on Sundays. Come train!

Fantastic experience: High Noon is a fantastic gym run by two great instructors and friends. After my old gym suddenly closed, the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth and I wanted to take a step back from BJJ for a bit. However, Matt and Tim worked quickly and carefully to provide a new home for me and our other displaced teammates. I'm extremely grateful and proud to train at this great facility under their banner. Classes are challenging yet welcoming and beneficial to all skill levels and I would highly recommend this gym to anyone who may be interested. I've been training BJJ for nine years and I'm excited to be a part of High Noon BJJ.

Fantastic experience: One of the most comfortable atmospheres I’ve ever experienced in the world of jiu jitsu, this academy offers a great place to train for all folks from every facet of life. Tim and Matt (owners/head coaches) are not only experienced in providing excellent jiu jitsu instruction, but also ensuring everyone who’s steps into their academy feels welcome, safe, and satisfied with their experience while present.

Fantastic experience: High Noon is one of the friendliest academies in the Northern Virginia area. Tim Dawson and Matt Miller are highly technical instructors who teach effective material in a manner that anyone can understand. The location is easy to find and the facilities are clean and well maintained. Their strength and conditioning classes are challenging. I like the music played during class. The classes themselves are run at a good pace which will leave you feeling like you've worked hard by the end. The students are friendly and willing to work with new people. Everyone there stands for everyone else's success. They have captured the essence of jiu jitsu and I'd strongly recommend anyone to train here.

Fantastic experience: Tim and Matt are class acts and are the legacy of the late David Jacobs. This is the best high level Jiu Jitsu in the area! As far as the fitness side, the Forces were the heart of the old Outlaw Crossfit and DEFINITELY know their stuff. You can't go wrong signing up here no matter what you're looking for.

Fantastic experience: This place has world champion led instruction, dank memes, S&C, and an unparalleled adult wrestling class Sunday at 11AM. Much like mentor Dave's school was (may he RIP), this school is very welcoming to beginners, but is also a magnet school for wayward colored belts. People who started out at more "traditional" schools end up here, because there is no weird cult nonsense or frivolous customs, just high quality grappling with friends.
