Fantastic experience: We signed up for a rock climbing session in Great Falls on my friend's birthday. It was overall great experience. Two instructors, Emma and Erin, were very friendly and helpful. None of us had rock climbing experience, and the instructors were very patient and provided great service.

Fantastic experience: My son wanted to climb for his birthday. He had gone one time before at another location, and had a good experience. When we arrived we were assisted with every part of the process. My son and his friends had a great time. All were first time climbers. The facility is a large open space which allowed all adults to watch the children climb. The staff were friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Fantastic experience: We had our first climbing session today with Bia! She did an amazing job and we felt like pros by the end of the session. We had a blast, 10/10, we'll be back soon and often.

Fantastic experience: Great place, friendly staff, and a really supportive community of climbers of all levels. Three large bays to climb, whether you like top roping or bouldering. They also have a moon board and a pretty good size gym!

Fantastic experience: I'm updating my review from 6 years ago. Sportrock has evolved immensely since then. They've expanded their space, have a great community, friendly/helpful staff, and plenty of routes (frequently updated) to keep climbing fun and challenging.

Fantastic experience: If you're coming here just once I get how it might be frustrating to do the certifications but if you're a regular and you get the certifications out of the way its a great place to climb, with a good range of boulders and top rope challenges, although I mainly stick with bouldering. They got a new routsetter recently who may have sandbagged one boulder but thats hardly an issue. Great place, love coming here.

Fantastic experience: I am very impressed with how well they have adapted to the COVID situation. The staff has gone above and beyond to help us have a clean and safe environment. The gym is up and running and doing well. The setters are at full steam putting up new routes.

Fantastic experience: Went for the first time last week to check it out since I am moving to DC soon. Had a great time and was really impressed by the route setting and height of the walls. 60 feet really gets you pumped when you're used to shorter walls! I also like that the grades seem to be consistent and perhaps a hair on the stiffer side, which I prefer. Sean was the staff member that checked us in and did our belay checks, and was very friendly and helpful throughout. Looking forward to starting a membership soon and getting to know the community!

Fantastic experience: Hard to beat sportrock when it comes to the height of the walls, and the cost of membership is better than pretty much every gym worth it's salt.

Fantastic experience: This is one of the best climbing gyms I've been to.

Fantastic experience: These guys are people first! Such a great atmosphere for my family and I. Dominic went above and beyond for us!

Fantastic experience: This is our favorite climbing gym! The vibe is always great and relaxed and the staff are friendly and quick to help. My husband and I make the 1.5 hr drive from st mary’s county at least twice a week. The problems are exciting and the 60 ft wall area is a unique experience. The owner Lillian Chao is also such an inspiring force for the community and always happy to chat. Wish it had a bigger gear shop but overall we love this space!

Fantastic experience: I've been loving Sportrock, it's great exercise and you don't even realize you're exercising. They keep the climbing walls relatively fresh with updates, but not so fast that you feel like you need to hurry and climb a route before it gets removed. In addition to lots of climbing opportunities (they have 3 separate bays with a lot of climbing options), they have weights/aerobics equipment as well as a yoga room/classes and other health related classes. The staff has always been great. Genuinely like that I found this place.

Fantastic experience: They were super kind to me, explained everything. The installations are amazing, they have bulder and route climbing. The rental shoes are fine for being rental. I'm so happy I managed to go there !

Fantastic experience: I’ve been twice with my family for the beginner rock climbing course. The first class was with B and the second class was with young Xavier. We had a fantastic time both times. The staff and course instructors are very friendly and approachable. They do a good job of easing you in and they’re very patient, even if you’re scared of heights. We highly recommend anyone to go. If you’re lucky you might even get B or Xavier!

Fantastic experience: Awesome climbing spot. I've been climbing here for a couple of years. The sets are good, the staff keeps the place clean. People here have various skill levels, from beginner to some top tier skill. They're taking a lot of precautions around covid-19. Booking timeslots, mandatory masks, 15 minute intermissions between sessions to clean. They're really doing an amazing job!

Fantastic experience: Update: A few months later, I am still very pleased with Sportrock. My wife and kids love it. This was the first time my fiancée and I have climbed. Our instructor, Brenna, was outstanding. She helped us get comfortable and taught us how to correct our form. The environment was friendly and welcoming. It was a laid back experience that allowed us to challenge ourselves at our own pace. We will definitely return. Recommend this place for anyone.

Fantastic experience: The Olympic speedwall is a great place to start if you're looking for a beginner-friendly place to have some fun. With a large range of difficulties, you're sure to find something to your liking. You may even get lucky and see an Olympian athlete practicing there sometime. The facilities are spacious and very cold (refreshing when you're working hard), and the staff is great.

Fantastic experience: Wife and I came in on a Sunday morning for a fun and active climb. We had a great experience, both with the staff and the facilities. Equipment was in good shape, and all of the walls were well kept. Our instructor was amazing, very relaxed and he never pushed us more than we wanted on the walls. The climbs are great and offer a ton of varying difficulty from never climbed to bouldering and clip in climbing. The 60ft walls are something to behold at first, some of the tallest on the east Coast. We did a 1.5 hr session, and were pretty tired by the end (roughly 5 climbs or so with a group of 3). Definitely will be coming back. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn to climb, or just have a fun and active afternoon!

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality , Value First time and I did the 60 foot wall! Loved it - great instructors, lots of comraderie, physically and mentally challenging.

Fantastic experience: I was totally impressed by Jack!! I came in pretty confused because I was not super sure what facility I had booked at but he helped my friends and I get in and have a good time. He explained the facility for us and was very thorough and personable. He checked in with us occasionally and gave us great tips. Honestly wish he worked at my home gym because he just exuded that feel-good “everyone is friends” vibe. Give him a raise FOR REAL

Fantastic experience: Great facility, great staff! You can do the bouldering walls without a reservation or training, and they're definitely a challenge for all skill levels

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality , Value My husband and I went rock climbing for the first time on Friday Night Heights. Our instructor, Nina, was so sweet, professional, patient and encouraging with so many helpful tips! We had such a wonderful time and would recommend to anyone!

Fantastic experience: I just completed the L1 Anchors class through Sportrock @ Great Falls with Drew Garden as our instructor. The class was a little over ~6 hours long, but by the time it was over, I could have sworn it was only 2 hours because Drew was so engaging to both provide instruction and answer our questions with enthusiastic demonstrations or hands-on experience. It was very apparent he has a strong passion not only for climbing, but for teaching others as well. I learned considerably more than I had anticipated even though it was an L1 course, since a lot of anchor building is circumstantial and adaptive to the location and available gear. I had a ton of fun learning with my group, and highly recommend this class to anyone who thinks they may want to climb outdoors. While it is impossible in 6 hours to cover all facets of anchoring, I ended today knowing I had gained a solid foundation, and trust myself to rig a toprope anchor outdoors now. Drew made this class incredibly digestible regardless of the climbers level of experience with climbing outdoors or in the gym.

Heather Clark 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I just took the L1 anchors course (an outdoors course to learn how to set up a top rope anchor) with Drew Garden and it was fantastic! It was structured perfectly to enable us to learn each skill step by step, adding context along the way so we would actually understand the logic behind each decision. Drew was wonderfully patient, knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make the class fun, engaging and effective. This was my first outdoors class and I couldn't say enough great things about it! I've been a member of Sportrock for years, and love the community, setting, and staff. SRPI is a great new addition for competition style boulders and learning new techniques. Taylor and Xavier are knowledgeable, encouraging and helpful, I look forward to each session!

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality , Value An amazing place and phenomenal staff. A group of us were climbing with Kirstin as our instructor and she was outstanding! Everyone was super friendly and the place was clean. Wether you want challenges or you're a beginner this place is fantastic. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: Great gym, I was a first timer everyone was extremely nice and encouraging! I would strongly consider making this spot my go to gym whenever I want to go climbing! Prices are reasonable too!

Fantastic experience: I have been going here for 7 years and love it. I see Molly (and occasionally others) for private instruction. I have now been to over 10 climbing gyms across the country and I think I am spoiled by my experience here. They are fairly priced, flexible, safe (physical safety and COVID), nice, and have the tallest walls I have ever climbed. They are also awesome about being inclusive to those with injuries, medical conditions (including me), etc. and even donate time and resources to allow them to climb with confidence.

Britton Frankel 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Visiting in from Florida and we had a blast! Fun routes, really dig the tall walls, good vibes from the team and leadership team all and all. Within Covid Precautions (as with many businesses right now) they are trying to do the best to help mitigate risk and provide the best experience to their patrons as they can. Can’t wait to come back. Keep on Crushin it, Britt

Fantastic experience: Sportrock Climbing Center is massive and well-maintained, not to mention - visiting from NYC - remarkably affordable to visit or to start a membership. Regardless of your favorite style of climbing - rope, bouldering, speed - they've got a ton of space and a ton of walls.

Fantastic experience: This is such an amazing climbing gym. The setting is incredible with smooth movement and extremely fun and challenging problems. This gym has the best setting of any climbing gym I’ve ever been to. The bouldering area has everything I need between an awesome cave, flat wall, slab, a replica of an outdoor boulder that you can climb on top of, moon board, etc. the rope walls are 70ft which is the tallest on the east coast. The lifting area is amazing. Everything is amazing here. I highly recommend it!

Fantastic experience: Awesome gym. Tall walls with plenty of routes, there is even a speed wall. The facility is clean and spacious. Their weight section is very nice and well equipped. There is an upper yoga and dumbbell area which is pretty nice too. Overall, had a good experience.

Albert Lam 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym in the Northern Virginia area. They are very community focused and provide lots of support in the gym for new members. Bouldering problems are rotated frequently and the gym is very clean. They also have a fitness area equipped with enough squat racks, benches, and dumbbells for anyone interested in lifting.

Fantastic experience: Great spacious gym with friendly, helpful staff and a great routes. Me and a friend started climbing three weeks ago by attending one of their intro classes. I would highly recommend the class if it’s your first time because you can immediately learn to belay, which frees you from the climbing restrictions, and you learn all the basic knots you’d need to climb on your own. On our second time we passed the belay test and had free reign of the gym. After looking at all of the local climbing gyms, Sportrock is the largest with the highest walls, and seems to be the go-to place for many serious climbers in the area. We’ve typically gone from 8p-11p on weekdays. Usually a little busy at 8p but calms down a bunch by 9p. Membership is pretty cheap comparatively, and if you buy your own gear a day pass is only $20. The strength training part of the gym is only so-so. Wouldn’t replace your regular gym if you have one. That would be my only mark for improvement.

Fantastic experience: I am a regular member and love that I can climb, but also lift weights and take yoga all in one place. The facility is well-run and for the most part the staff members are very helpful and welcoming. I am a big fan of the upstairs workspace; my only feedback would be to install a door so the noise of the climbing gym doesn't spill in when you are trying to work, and to maybe add a water cooler in the room as well.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been climbing here for a while! I think this is the best indoor climbing place in the DC metro area. The routes are so diverse and they change the routes very frequently. We love the 60 foot wall, the workout area, as well as their yoga classes. We go to their Sunday morning class every week. Compared to other indoor climbing places in this area, I would say sportrock has more professional routes and more affordable fees. Hope it will get better and better!

Fantastic experience: Really nice rock climbing place. Plenty of types of walls and objects to climb, guided and free-hand. Wonderful staff. Lessons offered. Good for groups or individuals.

Fantastic experience: Recently my kid joined this club's junior advanced team. Very well organized. I haven't talked to staff a lot because they are busy to stay on top of kids and run the program schedule on time. I like the conditioning & static stretching session for last 30 mins. So far so good. My kid likes the program. Let's go climbing!

Fantastic experience: TLDR: This is an excellent climbing gym. I've been a member of this climbing gym for 5 years or so now and the gym that was already a great gym with wonderful staff back them, has only gotten better, bigger and stronger in terms of space, equipment, walls and staff members.

Fantastic experience: Sportrock Alexandria has become my favorite gym since they upgraded and added the third bay. It does get a bit crowded at times, but most usually leave after 8/9. The yoga sessions an climbing clinics are very helpful and are offered all week long. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Keith Waters 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Update: We've been climbing at the Alexandria location for a year and a half. (We go twice a week). The place is really great to be at, always a good vibe (still). Love that they reset the routes frequently, new challenges. And the 60 foot walls in Bay three are amazing. Really great place for after work or the weekends. We also love the yoga (great instructors) and workout equipment included with the membership. We don't have kids but it's really nice to see how family friendly the place is.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to this gym off and on for five years and this place made me LOVE climbing. As an adult, it was the first place that made me want to go to the gym. The culture of the place makes it comfortable for the serious climber and the novice. They recently did a major expansion that includes 60 foot walls! They reset the routes frequently enough that there is always a new challenge and it is never boring. The place is kept clean and safe, and the staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have only taken one class, but it was really great. The instructor was informative and encouraging. On a busy day, parking can be a challenge, but we usually are able to find a spot within a reasonable amount of time.

Fantastic experience: So much fun, there is a lot to do for all ages and levels of experience! Highly recommend trying it out if you have an interest in climbing.

Katrina A Curtis 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is an amazing climbing gym, unpretentious, super friendly staff and all the customers are very courteous. There is a good variety of routes, they are fairly graded (a 5.10 feels like a 5.10), and they update the routes regularly. Very clean, both the facility and the holds. Only downside is the parking lot can get a little full and tight sometimes.

Ryan Sandhaus 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great price compared to Earth Trek, and subjectively better made climbing routes. Love this place. Great staff, friendly community. Great kids programs. They recently opened a new section and have a vastly expanded gym, along with taller walls to climb. The routes were already great, but they've been extra great these last few months. Honestly the only complaint I can think of is that they don't have paper towels in the bathrooms. I get my hands all dirty and then need to air dry my hands off. Please, paper towels, please.

Adam Dempsey 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great facility. Plenty of variety for all experience levels, and enough to keep anyone from getting bored. The place is huge. The staff was very friendly and made our experience truly memorable. I'd highly recommend this place for groups as well as for anyone interested in a fun way to get great exercise and learn about rock climbing and bouldering.

Victoria B. 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: I knew I wanted to get a membership here the first day I went. The staff are great and the people who go here are some of the most friendly and welcoming I've ever experienced at a climbing gym. The routes are dynamic and creative, they change at regular intervals, and they cater well to all skill levels. I feel that climbing at this gym has improved my ability more than other gyms, partly due to the routes set and partly due to the friendly, helpful, and supportive community.
