Our comment from FitFit United States about Downtown Sports and Wellness:
Downtown Sports and Wellness in Albuquerque offers a unique and welcoming experience for its members. It is known for its friendly staff and excellent facilities, including a pool, sauna, steam room, and a variety of workout spaces. Many users appreciate the exceptional customer service and the cleanliness of the gym. The Les Mills classes, yoga sessions, and a diverse range of equipment provide options for fitness enthusiasts at all levels.
However, some members have expressed concerns about the limited operating hours, wishing for weekend access and earlier openings. Additionally, there are mentions of certain equipment maintenance issues that need attention. Despite these drawbacks, the gym is cherished for its intimate and community-oriented atmosphere, making it a great place for those who live or work in the area.
Downtown Sports and Wellness: Opinions

Fantastic experience: I stayed at the hotel across the street for a work-related conference. The hotel doesn't have an onsite fitness center, but has an agreement to let guests use the Downtown Sports and Wellness facility. I used the facility three consecutive days- The facility is very clean and they have a great variety of free weights, cable machines, and cardio equipment. Additionally, the staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming (Jackie was there at least two of the days I was there and was fantastic- if her boss reads this, she deserves a raise!). I didn't use the pool or hot tub, but they looked nice as well. If I lived nearby, I would definitely consider a membership here.
Fantastic experience: Love that the pool is indoors- no weather constraints on swim time! I always see the female staff members cleaning something and love the feeling of this place being a “secret” community!
Fantastic experience: Good! I like, me like gym. Pick heavy thing up, put heavy thing down!
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out! If you haven’t yet your missing out They have a heated pool & the Racquetball courts are incredibly nice. Classes too!
Fantastic experience: Great place to get in a work out, a swim or shoot some hoops!
Fantastic experience: This is like having your own private health club (there's very few people here). There's a dry sauna and the steam room is amazing. and there's even racquetball courts! Wow!
Fantastic experience: Well appointed, clean. Not excessively busy
Thank you GG! Happy to see you are enjoying the facility!
Negative experience: Whom does this gym even cater to? Seriously - no weekend hours??? and only open daily between 6AM and 7PM? Retirees? People who work downtown (which has dropped significantly over the years)?. This is the closest Sports and Wellness to me, but definitely not worth the pricey membership due to the oddly limited hours.
Negative experience: Save your money and go to a better gym. whatever you initially start paying they will eventually increase your price. i went from paying 75 a month to 100 dollars with a price increase each month until it was 120 and they just do this arbitrarily. If you ask other members that are paying out of pocket you'll find that everyone is paying between 70 and 120 regardless of how long they've been there. no ones paying the same. Not only did they increase my price but they did it after begging members to pay money during the pandemic which i foolishly did not treating the company as the greedy corporation they are. What was worse than the price increase was that the gyms just got worse. shorter hours and the standards for cleanliness in the pool/locker room areas dropped severely. customer service went down as well, i used to feel welcome when i came in but they mostly hire a bunch of socially inept young people who seem annoyed when you ask them for anything. It's a shame because ive been going to sports and wellness all my life and i did love it but seeing how they treat life long members really soured me on them. Go to chuze fitness instead, it's got all the same amenities except you dont get a towel or the dollar store soap and shampoo, big whoop. and for only a fraction of the price with 4 tiers of membership so you always know exactly what your paying for. If you get a cheaper membership through insurance or your job then go for it but if you're like me and paying out of pocket then dont give these corporate bozo's your hard earned money and go somewhere cheaper and better.
Negative experience: they will bill four months after you cancel. worst gym in new mexico. service is horrible and closes at the weirdest hours.
Fantastic experience: Love the folks at the downtown Sports and wellness. Love the steam room!!!!!
Thank you, Joanie! We do have a pretty excellent team and are thrilled you are enjoying the club.
Fantastic experience: I love the les mills classes and the variety of spaces and equipment.
Thank you, Adriana!
Fantastic experience: I frequent the Downtown Sports and Wellness at the Galleria and, to me, it's more than just a Health Club, it's my home away from home. Here, I have plenty of space, to do my exercises, spend some time with the morning crowd in the sauna and steam room and ease my aching bones in their awesome round hot tub, heated to 104 degree perfection and clear and clean as can be. The staff is friendly and helpful and my fellow members are friendly as can be. One fellow, Daryl, turned me on to a great transmission shop on Bridge Street (Price Transmissions) and that saved me a big $1500 when I replaced my clutch! I have gone to the extra expense of renting my own locker and that is a hoot. It's nice to have all my stuff safe and sound at the club. Makes things a whole lot easier. I love attending the Yoga Class on Tuesday at noon and sometimes Wednesday at 5:30 pm. Yoga is great with beginners and advanced members, so nobody has an excuse not to attend. I am so glad to be a member of the Downtown Sports and Wellness. I know there are four other clubs that I can attend but I haven't been there for over 10 years! That's how much I love my Downtown Sports and Wellness and I hope you will give it a chance coz we'd love to see you!
Fantastic experience: My favorite sports and wellness is dwn twn location. The only dwn side is they close at 7pm I pay $200 a month and the hours are not good I feel like at that price they need atleast 1 of there locations to be a 24 hour.
Fantastic experience: Open Parking across street . Good steam sauna . Good functional area
Thank you, Rich!
Positive experience: I love this gym but PLEASE open on the weekend?? Edit: A lot of the equipment needs serious repair. I.e a set of 45lb dumbbells where the ends straight up fall off, or machines where the grip is crusted and leaves glue on your hands. Also, all the clocks say different times which, granted, is pretty minor. But still frustrating nonetheless.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Albuquerque.
Fantastic experience: Great facilitie, gym and team/staff.
Thank you, Russ! We are so happy to see you love the club!
Fantastic experience: Staff is nice, clean, free weights, basketball court, cross fit. All an athletic person could want. My husband loves this gym.
Fantastic experience: Perfect spot to go, if you work or live right across the street. Come on! We want them to be open on weekends again
Positive experience: Always peaceful. Nice secluded spot
Thank you, Monica! If there is anything we can do to improve your experience, please visit with our General Manger.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Albuquerque.
Thank you, Kelvin!
Positive experience: Looks like a nice place but they don't do day passes unfortunately
Positive experience: I was impressed with this gym and made mental notes for feedback to my current gym manager where my contract is soon to expire. The facility was clean and smelled fresh when I walked in. I did not see a broken equipment with stickers in sight and in free weight area and basketball room; the weights and resistant bands were stacked and everything hung up - I was impressed and did my part to respect those protocols. The locker-room was clean! I observed on the sink area, toiletries complementary (combs, deodorant, lotion, etc....) that Ive never seen in any gym. There was an open shower-room to either rinse off from the pool or steam-room that was in the same area. There is also the option for privacy in showers with curtains. The steam-room was hotter than I expected because the steam heats up fairly quickly. Steam-room was in the mens locker while the pool, hotter and sauna are co-ed. Cons that I noted that prevented a 5-star rating - Parking was a bit tricky to find in the convention centre area. Tickets are validated for the gym. - Locker combinations are not user friendly because they stick or wont unlock when you have set your code. I had to go to the front desk to request the over-ride key 2 times for 1st locker and 2nd when I switched lockers. I see the options for the turn dial locks that may be a better option. Suggestion: Adjust the heat in steam-room so guys may sit and enjoy because it is too hot. I was only able to sit for about 3-5 mins because the heat was excessive. I was using a pass to check out the facility so Im unsure of their membership options. Overall, the facility was clean and appears well maintained. I was impressed!
Fantastic experience: Love this place for my lunchtime workout. Convenient spot. Cool staff. I really enjoy the body pump and body combat classes. The pool and sauna are perfect for me.
Hey Max! Thank you for the great review! We are really happy to see you are enjoying so much of what we have to offer!
Fantastic experience: Love this place ❣️
Thank you, Erica!
Fantastic experience: Just signed very professional quick I am very impressed thank you Daniel
Welcome to our fitness family, Mike!
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out ! Yoga is great here !
Thank you, Jeremiah!
Positive experience: Wish the hours could go back to opening at 5AM and opened at least on Saturday.
Fantastic experience: Steam room, free weights, sketch, pt, everything you need. Equipment is clean and well maintained.
Positive experience: I absolutely love this location and the staff but being a downtown location I would think they’d have better hours so business people could get a workout before and after work. I end up having to find another location to workout end of day and weekends. I know hours changed for covid but I’m still waiting for the hours to be expanded so I can make this my home gym! We need weekends open.
Hi Pablo, Glad to hear you are enjoying the club! We are encouraging our members to let us know about time requirements. If we get enough demand for increased hours, then we will give that serious consideration. We appreciate you letting us know your preferences. That helps us make the right decisions. Please contact the club with your suggestions. thanks!
Negative experience: I was interested in purchasing a membership, but that quickly changed when I hopped on a call with a representative. They would not give away pricing information until I had come into the gym. Would not give ranges of cost either. I felt extremely frustrated and disappointed by the lack of transparency. I've given my money to a gym that has all the pricing publicly available, as I believe it should be.
Madhuri, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Let us start by saying we would like to offer you (and anyone else who is interested in trying our clubs) a free, no obligation, all-access one-week pass. We are a private club. We do not post our rates online or provide them over the phone as we have a variety of membership options as well as corporate partnerships that makes that almost impossible. After 35 years of having this policy, we can tell you why we chose to do it this way. We know that experiencing the club is the only way someone can determine whether or not the club is worth the money. That is why we provide the free trail membership. Whether or not we are worth the price for you depends on your wants, needs and what you fined of value. Our members believe that we provide the value to back up the cost. Why not try it out and see for yourself? Give us a try and see why so many have chosen to be a Sports & Wellness member.
Positive experience: This was a good gym and everything was in a fairly good condition, probably because it is never busy which is great. However, I honestly didn’t feel like this facility was worth the money, it is not as nice as I expected. To me, it felt old. I feel like they also have many rooms (that look empty and have odd steps because nothing is on the same floor level) that people don’t even use, so it looks like wasted space with a weird layout. Overall I had an ok experience, but if you’re into gyms that feel new and bright (I thought it was kind of dark in there), I wouldn’t say this is the one, at least not this location.
Fantastic experience: I love this small executive feeling health club. It has a dry sauna, steam saunas, a pool, a jacuzzi, racquetball courts, and all the equipment I need for a good workout. Never seems to crowded. Friendly staff and me, a super helpful, knowledgeable trainer!
Fantastic experience: Such an awesome place. People here make me feel great and welcomed very family oriented place. No problems with billing idk y most say that. Love s&w
Positive experience: Downtown Sports and Wellness is a small and friendly club. I have been a member since 1982 since it was "Executive Sports Club". It was built underground as a movie theater so it's a bit funkier than the more upscale locations. Downtown doesn't have the number of classes as the larger and newer clubs, more like living in a small town. You also are not cheek by jowl with others which is wonderful. . Staff is always willing to help and is accommodating. I have never had a problem with towels and equipment, and if you live and/or work Downtown or in the Near North Valley, the convenience is great.
Fantastic experience: What a great gym. This place has a lot to offer. I do lap swimming in the heated pool, and the hot tub is nice after a workout. I love the accomodations too in the locker room, and everything is so clean. Customer service is exceptional. I'm happy to be a member. I highly recommend this gym.
Positive experience: Glad this location is back open. Hopefully they’ll extend the hours and open up earlier. But it’s never busy it’s like having your own private club.
Positive experience: Downtown needs to go back to staying open until 9pm, they are only open from 6am - 7pm Monday through Friday and closed all weekend.
Fantastic experience: Been going for the past 25 years.
Thank you, Roberto! You have been a long standing member of our family. We hope to see you back in the clubs soon!
Fantastic experience: How much is the membership approx?
Hello, Telmo~ We offer a variety of membership options so around $100 as I imagine you will qualify for a discount.
Fantastic experience: I have been a member for so long that I started on my parents' membership! Love this place
YEA!! Thank you for the review, Jonathan and being part of our family!
Fantastic experience: All around Downtown Sports And Wellness is a great gym but the price is what drove me away, however, Giles has been excellent and has gone above and beyond for us, great customer service, the ladies at the front are always great, the gym has everything you need, great pool, my only complaint would be the swimming pool allows kids and it’s a little to small to do water aerobics and having kids screaming splashing and constantly in the way!
Hello, Diane~ Thank you for your review of Sports & Wellness. We are happy to hear that Giles has been an outstanding resource for you and your needs. As for the pool, all four of our other locations have larger pools and are more accommodating for children. Your membership does give you unlimited access to all 5 of our locations. We hope to see you back in the future!
Positive experience: I would have given 5 stars. The gym should not allow children. It's frustrating to swim with kids who are diving in the small pool and splashing about. I don't have an issue with kids and I know they don't know any better and they just want to have fun. But I'm tired of parents dumping their under 14 year old kids at the pool while they work out.
Liz~ We are sorry to see you didn't have a great visit at our club. Please know we strive to create an exceptional experience during each of your visits. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Love all the Sports and Wellness locations
Thank you, Kathy! We are so happy to hear you love spending your time with us at Sports & Wellness!
Negative experience: Do you like working out in a sweaty cave? Then I have the gym for you! Save yourself - place is a joke and the so called manager George is useless when approached with questions. When you look up small man syndrome in the dictionary his name appears. Find anywhere else to go
Hi, Aaron. We are so sorry to read about your disappointment. Our team strives to deliver the best possible service by exceeding expectations, and we take it very seriously that we missed the mark during your visit. Please rest assured that we have discussed your concerns with the appropriate staff. Please contact us directly if we can further assist you in any way.
Fantastic experience: The staff is always friendly and helpful and there is always plenty of equipment to go around. I'm never waiting. I also love the variety of equipment, including the pool area and racquetball courts and classes. The variety keeps me excited to come back.
Thank you, Shannon! Wonderful information and we appreciate your review!
Fantastic experience: Been a member for a few years and I love it! I wouldn’t go anywhere else!! Very happy with the downtown location. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Bo (the personal training manager) loaned me his own shirt when I forgot mine so I could work out. He was really nice. He said I had to take a picture with him in exchange for the shirt loan.
Positive experience: Good place to work out but need to change the hours because it's never opened
Fantastic experience: Very nice and quiet!
Fantastic experience: Clean !!!! And the staff is always willing to help out
Positive experience: Fine gym. A lot of options- my one issue is that it’s always warm. Which is nice when you walk in but means I sweat WAYYYY more than normal when I workout so I’m taking a class or running and I have sweat dripping into my eyes when I don’t usually sweat that much
Fantastic experience: This is a great club with a real big city feel. Reminds me of the equinoxs in NYC. The staff is awesome and there is rarely a wait for equipment. This location is very different from there others. This a pure sports club and lacks the country club feel of Del Norte or High Point but is great for that reason.
Fantastic experience: This gym suits my needs to do PT, stretching and swim. I use a power wheelchair and this is truly a wheelchair accessible gym. I could not be happier with the staff and the quality of the amenities. There's a large wheelchair accessible shower with shower seat and grab bars. Although there is no wheelchair lift at the pool or hot tub, having an incomplete injury I use hands and knees. After my swim or when I get cold (as I can't regulate my body temp), I crawl over to the hot tub which is divided from the pool by a small wall. They have a dry sauna, a wet sauna, there's shampoo, soap and body lotion. The gym has a stretching machine for eight different muscle groups. As I can't do anything else aside from swimming, my review is based solely on the pool. Yes, the Downtown location probably shows its age here and there. But for me it's perfect. The attendants are great. I cannot wish for a nicer and more professiona l crew. However, I can see that there has been a lot of personnel changes including managers over the last year and a half. The current manager is fantastic, so hopefully that will adjust issues regarding membership. Give this gym a shot though; where else in Albuquerque would you find a pool, hot tub, wet and dry sauna in one location? They also have a ton of group exercise classes including spinning and yoga, and very motivating trainers, and nice members.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful staff, nice facilities, love to gym here!
Positive experience: closed on Sundays (none of the other S&W are....?)
