Albany's Indoor Rockgym: Opinions

Fantastic experience: This place is amazing. The customer service is top tier. It's actually pretty cheap! The tunnels are one of a kind, and fun for all ages. It's basically a labyrinth of tunnels intersecting and going up and down. They are pitch black and you feel your way around. They are so much fun!!! Definitely recommend coming here!!!
Negative experience: Interesting climbing gym, but this review is about their guided trips and crag etiquette. I enjoy climbing at Moss Island, Little Falls, and I am disappointed to say that AIR is known for setting up ~10 climbs and leaving them up for the whole day, but only having people climb on about 3 ropes at a time, leaving many ropes unused and unattended. This vastly reduces the number of bolts available for other people visiting the crag to use. For a popular crag with an already-limited number of anchor bolts, this feels like very bad etiquette for an established guide service in the region.
Fantastic experience: Spray board helps build strength and climbing intellect. Bouldering routes set by Ellie use great body mechanics and help improve problem solving skills.
Fantastic experience: Me and Ryder are like friends
Fantastic experience: This place is a gem! Definitely older and smaller, but the climbs are super interesting and staff (Tom & Amelia) are awesome.
Fantastic experience: This is by far the coolest climbing gym I’ve ever been to. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, the features on the walls and ceiling are unique, and the cave system is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s the perfect mix of challenge and fun. I live two hours away, but will definitely be returning whenever I get the chance!
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb and very friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Excellent condition and equipment. Helpful and friendly staff. Lots of programs
Fantastic experience: The staff is so friendly and helpful! We had a great time and can't wait to return!
Fantastic experience: The staff were absolutely amazing, they gave lots of tips and advice. The cave crawls were super fun and I highly recommend adults give them a try, although they can be a little claustrophobic so keep that in mind. They also have a bunch of awesome crack climbs and top rope ceiling climbs. All in all, it was a great experience.
Fantastic experience: If you haven’t been here and you’re small enough to fit in the caves you’re missing out. This place is more fun than you would think. Don’t let its location fool you whoever designed this place is a freaking genius.
Fantastic experience: Friendly and professional staff. Nice and clean environment. Caving system is a nice surprise ( I am too dumb or too big to pass the box trial). Generally a nice place to work out and have some indoor fun!
Fantastic experience: GREAT experience and fun in the tunnels!!!
Fantastic experience: Amazing atmosphere, incredibly knowledgeable staff and top notch route setting by Ellie, Matt and Tom ❤️
Fantastic experience: So much fun, and the instructors are patient and easy to learn from. We’ll be back for sure!
Fantastic experience: great activity for all ages/abilities. great community too
Fantastic experience: Up from Carolina visiting family (near Thacher park), teens looking something warm to do, great time at 'A.I.R'. First time climbing and Tom did awesome! Price was perfect! Thanks, and keep it up!!
Fantastic experience: Good time, great lesson! AIR is approachable and non-intimidating, all while offering highly skilled instruction for climbers of all levels. Matt was knowledgeable and funny as well as super generous with his time. Whether you're a serious climber or a newbie, there is something for you to learn, explore, or challenge yourself with at AIR. Whatever your climbing goals are, I highly recommend starting with a private lesson as a fun and safe way to familiarize yourself with AIR and all its offerings.
Fantastic experience: Great place with knowledgeable staff.
Fantastic experience: Great time. Kids loved it
Fantastic experience: My granddaughters had a lot of fun. Mostly they were intrigued with the caves. They spent most of our 4 hours going through them and the zip lines. I was particularly impressed with the staff who allowed they to 'figure it out for themselves' and later when I asked staff to help they willingly went in to assist (which the girls did need by that time).
Fantastic experience: 5 stars mainly because the worker was exceptional. He took time to teach everyone and make sure they understood what to do, and he even came around and gave tips on routes and how to climb, which was helpful as we were beginners. Unfortunately I didn’t catch his name but he was excellent.
Positive experience: Good place to rockclimb
Fantastic experience: Tom was a fun guide! Highly suggest. It was our first time doing indoor rock climbing and he coached us through it. Didn’t even know there was a cave inside, so that was an awesome benefit.
Fantastic experience: Tom was hilarious!! Had the best time ever
Fantastic experience: Tom was literally the best guide he should get a raise for those jokes and friendliness
Fantastic experience: In summary, AIR is a bomber chill place to go climb. You have to realize that this was one of the first indoor climbing gyms in the US, so it doesn't have the glitz and glamor of modern gyms, but if you're looking for a friendly place with a great selection of routes and AMAZING instruction staff, this is the place to go. Matt is a glorious person and has all the knowledge and experience, plus a great disposition for teaching, that you could ever want in an instructor. I learned to climb here and I keep coming back!
Fantastic experience: One of the best most friendly rick gyms I've been too. Great for kids and adults alike
Fantastic experience: Very nice experience. The team was nice, the atmosphere was calm, and there's plenty of places to climb and cave. Additionally Matt was super helpful and pleasant while guiding us when we were ready to stop caving but couldn't figure out how to get out quickly. We would definitely come back again!
Fantastic experience: Truly unique and fun experience.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff lots of good climbs
Negative experience: Extremely poor and rude customer service. Majority of employees just sitting around looking at their cell phones the entire time we were there. Girl who checked us in was rude and acted as if we were a bother to her while going over safety instructions. She kept rolling her eyes and huffing and puffing. Nothing positive about customer service whatsoever and bare minimum engagement with customers. We did not even stay for entire 90 minutes we paid for. We will certainly not be returning.
Hi Paul, I'm sorry to hear you did not have a good time at our gym. I very much dislike hearing when anyone has anything less than a good time. While I was not there myself, I do know from the schedule it was a very busy day for my team and you may have just caught them during the first opportunity they had in their shift to take a breather. However please do not hesitate to ask our staff for help or if you have general questions about our gym, climbing, etc as I can assure you we all love what we do and are happy to share our knowledge. If you look at the number of positive reviews we generally get, you will see your experience is not the standard. As for the staff member who checked you in and worked with you today, I can tell you she is geniuinely one of the nicest people I know and all I will say is that her relaxed facial expression certainly should not be taken as an indication of her general personality.
Fantastic experience: We had a great time at AIR! They have a great variety of walls and the cave system was a surprise hit. The staff were also free and helpful. Will definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Very happy with my experience at AIR. Staff was knowledgable, professional, friendly and overall real great people. Made my daughter and I very comfortable with our time there. Laid back but serious about the nature of climbing. Looking forward to going back many more times. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Great place to learn or hone skills. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Fantastic experience: great!!!!
Fantastic experience: This place is truly a hidden gem. I'm shocked it's not packed every time I go. Great staff, plenty of safety training and really well made facility.
Hi Matthew We are thrilled you enjoy our gym so much and appreciate you taking the time to leave such a nice review.
Fantastic experience: EPIC
Fantastic experience: This place is a gem and reminds me so much of the gym I visit regularly at home. Despite being older and not as flashy as the new gyms, they have many good features that everyone would enjoy, even for people who are looking to train. My one critique is that the routes/boulder problems can be hard to follow as the colours/tags aren't always consistent. The setting in general also seems a bit reachy to me. Otherwise, great gym with incredible value.
Fantastic experience: The staff and gym are great! They were super fun and helpful with the three pre-teen boys I brought in.
Positive experience: i am more familiar with gyms like CRG, and i mostly do bouldering, so this was a change of pace for me. i spent a lot of time here, and the staff was helpful in helping me understand how everything worked. however, this gym was a lot smaller than i expected from the pictures online. there was no a/c, which made it very hot on an 80° day, and the smell in the gym was pretty bad. the mats weren’t placed well for bouldering and i had to move them as i was climbing. the music was not loud enough to hear through the whole gym. its not a bad gym, definitely good for top rope and outdoor climbers, and i don’t blame the staff. it just wasn’t for me
Fantastic experience: Great activity to do to spend time with your family. The staff are very friendly and professional. They were great at explaining to us exactly what do. I will definitely come again with my family and highly recommend it.
Positive experience: Great variety of interesting climbs and traversals, unique caves, reasonable rates
Fantastic experience: Best spot ever to climb rock and especially if Tom is there the best employee they have great with safety and everything else.
Fantastic experience: We had a great time here! Tom S. was a very good instructor.
Fantastic experience: This has been my favorite rock gym since they opened! Unlike most gyms it is designed in a fun and creative way, so there is always a new challenge. I love the indoor caves and Zipline, and the staff is awesome!
Negative experience: The place looked so interesting from the images and I was so excited to go. When we got there it was only belaying which is why it was “free” and part of the experience. I wouldn’t suggest this for a beginner to rock climb. This place didn’t seem very clean as well. The workers used their bare feet everywhere. They also had a tunnel system that you HAD to be barefoot in, no shoes were allowed. But wouldn’t the climbing shoes be perfectly fine for that?? Also from the gym smelling like feet and extreme body odor it made the experience even worse. There were some of the workers putting their bare foot on the rock walls right in front of us, exactly where we would put our hands. It just made me feel so uncomfortable to climb and even just be there. If it didn’t smell and everyone kept at least their socks on I would feel a little more comfortable. I would not suggest this place to anyone.
We are sorry you had a less than stellar time at our gym, but we did want to address a few things you said directly. We do have alot of top rope climbing all over the gym, but we are also, and always have been a full bouldering gym. Every wall surface is available for unroped climbing. We have crash pads and padded carpeted floors everywhere for this. In addition, unlike every other gym we know of, we provide a FREE, on-demand belay lesson to anyone that wishes to climb at our gym. This makes us an excellent beginner's gym. Anyone can just walk-in off the street and we will teach you how to get out there climbing and caving with your partner. Other gyms will require you to preschedule a belay lesson and test that will typically cost you $50 and are only taught at specific times. We endeavor to be good embasadors for the sport by being as inclusive and low cost as possible. Like every rock gym, as well as yoga studios, gymnastics classes, and martial arts facilities we do allow people to go bare foot. Many climbers remove their very tight climbing shoes between climbs or while belaying their partners. Bare foot rock climbing is also a niche part of the sport that many climbers try. As in all rock climbing gyms every handhold is also a foothold. So rock climbing shoes that go climbing outdoors and hands that turn public doorknobs will inevitably share holds sometimes. Our holds are pressure washed everytime they are removed and incorporated into a new route. We provide washrooms and hand sanitizer for anyone to use throughout the gym. Our unique caving system is one of a kind. Over 1000 feet of tunnels built by cavers over the course of 5 year provides an adventure for kids and adults alike. The inside of the cave systems is cleanly polished to be very smooth in order to keep it clean and safe for people as they slide through and maneuver. Shoes and socks do not grip very well in there as well as it makes it more likely that one gets their fingers stepped on by an unfeeling shoe. We do allow grippy sock to be worn in the cave if anyone wishes to bring them. Our concerns about someone sliding or not being able to maneuver with a slippery socked foot is a real one. And in the thirty years we have been open this has worked out to be the best way for people to enjoy the adventure of the caves. We hope this helps address some of your concerns about rock climbing gyms or excersie facilties and our gym in particular with its unique caving system. Thank you.
Positive experience: We recently visited this indoor rock gym for the first time and had a great time, despite a somewhat rocky start. When we first arrived, the staff member who greeted us wasn't particularly welcoming and didn't explain the process, which made things a bit awkward. However, once we got into the orientation, things improved significantly. The staff member went over the equipment, and rules, and gave us some practice tips, which made us feel much more comfortable and confident. The climbing experience itself was fantastic, and we had a lot of fun. The facilities could be better maintained. The smell of feet is strong. There are plenty of climbing options for different skill levels. Overall, despite the initial hiccup, we ended up having a wonderful time and would definitely come back. A little more warmth and clearer instructions at the beginning would make the experience perfect.
Fantastic experience: I went with my 8 year old daughter, this was our first rock climbing experience and the staff member was thorough in explaining what to do. She didn't care for climbing but the cave made up for it. She didn't want to leave, even if your child isn't in to climbing, bring them in for the cave, they'll love exploring all the paths.
Fantastic experience: Wow, what a cool place! Our family loved the tunnels and the different levels of rock walls for people of varied experience. We are not avid climbers, but we had a really fun time. The staff were super friendly and helpful too.

Fantastic experience: Great time!
Fantastic experience: Love climbing here.
Fantastic experience: Had a great time at AIR for a birthday party. Tom was a great host and the kids had a blast. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: We just had our daughters 7th birthday here and Tom was a wonderful host. He was really great with the kids and made the safety portion of the party fun and engaging. The kids had a blast. Thanks Tom and the team at Albany indoor rock climbing gym, we will be back soon and will tell all our friends.
Fantastic experience: Went with a few 18 year olds, had a blast. Can't really explain what the caves are like, have to go to experience but it was a lot of fun!!!! And it's very cheap.
Fantastic experience: Such a cool experience! Matt was incredibly helpful and thorough and really made us feel at ease with climbing and the cave system. Highly recommend for first time climbers!
Fantastic experience: Very cool spot. There are plenty of ropes so you can definitely get a spot on the wall. They also have a fun cave system to crawl through Matt was absolutely fantastic in giving a lesson and pointers to make sure we were safe and having a great time. Highly recommend for a weekend activity!
Fantastic experience: Cool place & really nice staff - super helpful for beginners!
Fantastic experience: Love the crew love rock climbing, I purchased the 1 month membership with rentals so far had a great time I love going!
Positive experience: Knowledgeable staff, great place for beginners/kids looking to have fun, definitely could use some airing out as the smell was intense, routes weren't incredibly clear in my opinion, but still fun!
Fantastic experience: Owner was great and spent time with everyone, helping them out with their climb. Super impressive pretty next and really fun and welcoming atmosphere..will be back
Negative experience: I purchased a walk in ticket for my 15 yr old daughter. No one greeted us when we walked in. Was told she couldn't climb high or use a harness without someone to ground her weight. There was no mention of this on the website. Nothing said she had to be in a group, or have a dedicated employee to spot her. She couldn't climb anymore than above her head. Disappointing. Thank you for your response. Perhaps explaining all of that on the website would be helpful. No one at the gym offered help or a lesson. We won't be back.
Hi MarcoI am sorry to hear of your disappointing experience with us. Our website does mention we have bouldering, top rope and lead climbing but I can understand that if you are not familiar with a rock gym you may not know exactly what those mean. So yes, without a partner to clip in with, a person coming in as a solo climber would only be able to boulder (free climb). We are however a teaching gym, great for beginners, and do teach a free belay lesson to all our guests and even yourself could go through the lesson to be a partner to your daughter. It is very simple lesson (we even teach it to 10 yr olds) and it would be a great way for you to do something with your daughter. I hope this info helps and that we can better set you and your daughter up in the future.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place for the whole family! Sunday funday for sure! Fun for everyone always a great time! Staff is always more then willing to help and have as much fun as you!
Fantastic experience: We have been to a few rockgyms but this is one of the most unique! We brought the kids to see if they might like climbing. They were a little nervous at first, but after the FREE LESSON (every other gym I have been to would charge you) they were made quite comfortable by the excellent instruction given. Even after it check out I think every single person who works there came by and taught us something new or helped us improve. They were all so patient and friendly. And not to spoil anything but the tunnels they have inside their hollow walls were an absolute adventure! Bring your family there, bring your friends there, you will be the hero of the day!
Fantastic experience: Had a great time with my 11yo, staff was very kind and helpful teaching me to belay. We had a great time just bouldering together and her doing rope climbs.Staff also helped get us started with the caves, which may have been easier to navigate with less kids (gym was pretty busy by 2pm). We did not notice any odor indicated in other reviews, but I suspect at the end of a crowded day, the caves may smell like a normal gym.
Fantastic experience: Great place, we wanted to take a break at the 1/2 way point to visit our daughter and ended up here. Being the 3rd rock gym in the country, it’s unique for sure and the caving above and behind the walls was quite a surprise. The staff are the friendliest I’ve come across, they were incredibly helpful, we learned a lot from them. We’ll be back for sure.
Fantastic experience: I went with my troop (4) we all had a great time.
Fantastic experience: Visited with wife and 2 mid teenagers…we all had fun…we belayed for the kids and we all got to do something together. Definitely worth checking out!
Fantastic experience: Love this place. I took my scout troop for an overnight. They had a blast both climbing and in the caves.
Fantastic experience: Place was great. Not nearly as crowded as I expected for a Saturday. Josh, gave my daughter and I our beginner lesson. He was great. All the staff were great. Climbing was fun but I didn’t get much of that in. I spent hours in the tunnels. Totally worth it. I wasn’t comfortable having my 10 year old daughter hold my 200 lbs, so if climbings your thing, bring a bigger buddy. Tunnels are awesome, scary, fun, stressful, great, draining, did I say scary and awesome. Great time for a 46 year old male and a 10 year old gal. We’ll be back for sure.
Fantastic experience: One of the most unique climbing experiences anywhere. The climbing walls are impressive themselves. The caves hidden behind the walls are next level awesome. We drive 2.5hrs & spend the night in Albany just to spend a few hours at AIR. Staff are super friendly, skilled and genuinely enthusiastic about what AIR has to offer. They had my 8yr old son hanging from the ceiling in minutes, coaching him through his climb to the top!
Fantastic experience: I loved rock climbing here
Fantastic experience: Super friendly and helpful staff! We had a great experience. Something for all different levels!
Positive experience: It is 1 adult per child, so you'll get turned away if it's just you with 2 kids. You really learn a lot about your body because you are lifting your full body weight. It's around $20 a person for an adult. Budget up to 100 dollars for a family of 4. I don't know if there is a time limit, but you can be there for a while. There are about 4 walls to climb, one is the least complex. The fourth is the most complex. It's not bad. But if you have 2 kids, bring 2 adults.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic. Every rope has a belay device attached to it, and they teach everyone how to belay, so this gym allows you to climb any of their ropes (this is not the case for all rock climbing gyms!). Also the 1/3 mile of caves they have is truly unique. We're talking small all-black tunnels that lead to hidden rooms, slides, and even a zipline. You need to confirm you can fit through a small hole before you're allowed in the caves. You're not allowed to bring in flashlights, but the workaround is to bring in glowsticks! Makes a world of difference to be able to see even that much and then there's no risk of them breaking and leaving glass to be picked up. Definitely recommend this place!
Fantastic experience: Walls aren’t as tall as some, but they make up for it with unique setting!
Fantastic experience: Had a great time, the tunnels are definitely a mental tester and I will 100% be coming back to find that zip line entrance
Fantastic experience: What a wonderful time! The staff is so accommodating. My husband and I feared going in the caves so the owners friend took our daughter. Nothing but good things to say about our experience. .
Positive experience: Amazing experience, caves are awesome, climbs had plenty of variety; however sometimes were hard to follow what holds belonged to a given climb. grading system also was different from the normal grading system I am used to making it a little harder to find climb’s appropriate for me. Would still highly recommend especially for new climbers. Can’t wait to come again!
Fantastic experience: My two sons (18 and 16) had a BLAST one evening of Christmas break. They scrambled all over, got lots of positive advice/coaching from the manager, and thought the caves were so fun! They were just bubbling with excitement when they got back. Thanks!
Fantastic experience: Great place. Awesome staff. Took our whole team in and showed them the ropes. Literally. They had a great time. Welcome to the Rock.
Fantastic experience: Tom really knows his stuff! Great experience rock climbing and tunneling - Definitely coming back!
Fantastic experience: Had an amazing time. The staff was very attentive and thoroughly explained the safety mechanisms. The indoor cave was extremely unique. Definitely worth trying out if you have a relatively small frame.
Fantastic experience: We're a family of beginners and they provided excellent instruction and tips. The climbing was fun and the cave system was surprisingly exhilarating. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Had a great experience on a quiet day at AIR; Tom was super helpful, welcoming, and generous with his time and knowledge. The routes here are pretty challenging for someone like me who is more used to indoor comp-style problems than outdoor climbing, but there's a huge variety set for all skill levels throughout the place.
Fantastic experience: Hidden gem! Took my daughter for a random weeknight activity and she loved it. So many different walls, and a hidden cave to explore. Good cheap fun, we'll be back for sure.
Fantastic experience: We had a great visit - they were great with the tweens and teens
Fantastic experience: One of the best date night spots if you’re looking for something new and fun. My partner and I are both in our mid - late 20s and we had a blast on the walls and even in the caves. The caves are a very unique way to test your communication, in the best way possible. 100% recommended to anyone.
Fantastic experience: Kids loved the cave system. A lot of wall space. A smaller area than I expected but our experience was worth it. Great family outing
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun and excellent staff.
Hi NicolasThanks for the ⭐s! We glad to hear you had a great visit with us.
Positive experience: Excellent staff. Very helpful and patient.
Hi A V. Thanks for the review. We love hearing when our staff help treat our guests to a pleasant visit. We hope to see you around the gym again soon!
Positive experience: Good gym although needs updated equipment. We love the caves though!
Fantastic experience: Friendly, knowledgeable staff, chill vibe, people that hang out there are cool also... not trendy, great challenging routes
Fantastic experience: My son had a great experience at AIR's climbing clinic and summer camp. He's hooked on climbing now!
Fantastic experience: Went there with boyscouts, good instructions and time
Fantastic experience: omg!! i’m a full, grown woman n i had SO MUCH fun bumping around inside the caves. there are also a few lengthy traverses here which challenged me in the best of ways. p.s. i had one qualm—if it’s your first time n you plan on doing top rope, you’ll have to show a kid that you know how to use the grigri. just hope you n your climbing partner are on PERFECT form that day, otherwise he’ll make you feel like a dummy.
Hi LindaThank you for your kind review, though I am terribly sorry to hear that you may have felt insulted in any way while learning the ropes. That is not who we generally are/who we try to be. We want to be a training facility for all. I hope you accept my deepest apologies if you felt otherwise. I will ensure this does not happen in the future.
Fantastic experience: AIR was so much fun! I have children from 7 up to 20 years of age, and they all had a blast, especially in the cave system.
Fantastic experience: My son really enjoyed the cave with the zip line and the climbing.
Fantastic experience: My daughter has become a super fan of this place! Great to get the kids active on winter weekends. Highly recommend their staff for people new to climbing. They are very knowledgeable and patient!
Hi JennyThank you for taking the time to give us such a nice shoutout! We are thrilled to hear our efforts of being a welcoming and engaging space are paying off.We look forward to continuing to see you and your family around the gym.
