Stoic Martial Arts: Opinions
Fantastic experience: I have trained at several jiu-jitsu gyms over the last decade plus, and I am very happy to call Stoic "home'. The general atmosphere stresses putting in hard work, and doing it safely. The instructor, Mason, is a wealth of technical knowledge, has an incredible work ethic, and has enough patience to put up with my antics. The facility is clean, which is a MUST for a martial arts studio. The other members are like-minded in that we're all there to get better and sharpen each other's skill. I intend to stay here for a long time.
Fantastic experience: This is the most welcoming gym I've ever been to! My husband has been doing Jiu Jitsu with them for a while now and got his purple belt, I started doing Muay Thai just recently, and my 14 year old daughter had her first Jits class today - she didn't want to leave. Our instructor, and every single person attending this gym are so kind, encouraging, and patient while still pushing you to be your best. 10/10 recommend checking it out!
Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been coming here about five times a week since we joined seven weeks ago. I am new to BJJ (limited experience with judo); I started because I have always been intimidated by groundwork/grappling and I want to get better. Everyone here has been welcoming and encouraging, which makes it a great place to learn. There is an excellent safety culture; I am currently the smallest member but I still feel safe training here. Coach Mason and other experienced teammates provide many opportunities to apply techniques when we grapple live, which helps reinforce the direct instruction. This place is addictive, because I always have fun and get a good workout.
Fantastic experience: This is a great dojo! My wife and I started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here nearly two months ago, and we are having a great time! Head Coach Mason McClellan is a top-notch instructor. He fosters a strong culture of safety, respect, and growth. He’s mindful of all experience levels, and he does an excellent job of tailoring the day’s lessons based on who is present. He will plan a great lesson, giving us an overview of a technique series, providing context for what we’re going to work on, before teaching a gradual technical progression from multiple setups to multiple finishes. Then he keeps an eye on everyone during drills and provides plenty of individual attention and detailed pointers. He is also an open-minded martial artist, presenting multiple perspectives on technique series and styles. All the practitioners have great attitudes. Everyone trains hard, but there are no big egos; the culture is all about growing together. When we spar, Mason emphasizes giving each other a chance to work through our techniques. Folks here know how to train safely, as well as how to train with smaller and/or less experienced students. Mason has also done a great job with the facility. It’s a big, clean, and good-looking dojo. The mat is thick tatami – great for grappling. There are heavy striking bags for Muay Thai and boxing, and Mason also has some nice exercise equipment. He also installed a translucent bay door that lets in the natural light during the day, adding to the ambience. Stoic Martial Arts also provides a great value. There are a ton of opportunities to train throughout the week. My wife and I are going to five BJJ classes per week, which we think is a lot as it is, but they also offer several striking classes on top of that. We haven’t gotten into the striking classes yet, mostly because of our schedules, but it’s tempting – the students look like they are having a lot of fun. We are very happy to have found Coach McClellan and Stoic Martial Arts! We plan to continue training here for years to come.
Fantastic experience: Mason is the best Jiu Jitsu instructor I’ve ever worked with and I’ve worked with a good amount of them. If you’re looking for a place that’s friendly, non-judgmental, supportive, and all around wonderful, then this is the gym for you. Highly highly recommended!!!!
