N-Flux: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Great workout, Chris truly is passionate about helping others and has the best approach in teaching self defense. In many industries you can fake it until you make it but fighting/self defense is not one of them. He has the all the right qualifications and solid years of experience to teach. The atmosphere he has created is very welcoming and produces the best classes in the area.
Fantastic experience: I cannot speak highly enough of the Krav Maga N-Flux program led by Chris Torres. Prior to joining the mixed group classes, I had never thrown a punch in my life. That didn't matter, as Chris is an excellent and professional trainer who meets the students at their level. He provides clear instruction, gives positive feedback, and creates a safe (yet challenging!) training environment. Questions about the exercises are encouraged and answered with practical information. I've really enjoyed how each class involves a combination of cardio, strength building, and technical exercises. Honestly, I can say that this program is essential for all women to build the physical, mental, and emotional stamina to needed for self-defense. Be prepared to work hard, the payoff is well worth it!
Fantastic experience: I've had the pleasure of training with Chris for over 7 years, and he is hands down one of the best instructors I have ever worked with. His expertise and professionalism are of the highest quality and his ability as an instructor has constantly improved and matured over the years. This is readily evident at Krav Maga-N-Flux, where his attention to detail is combined with an amazing workout and a very practical series of drills and scenarios that are designed to allow even the most novice student to quickly learn some valuable self-defense techniques. As you progress into the higher levels, Chris makes sure that you don't get bored by incorporating sparring and weapons training that is of great benefit, and a whole lot of fun! Couple all of that to a student composition that is as varied as the workouts, and you cant go wrong. Word of advice; be prepared to sweat!
Fantastic experience: This is an amazing community! Chris is a great instructor and has done a great job making sure everyone feels welcome. Also, you can't beat the plans/prices.
Fantastic experience: I took the Guerrera Self Defense Program and it was a fantastic class with fantastic instructors! Great environment and sense of community - I can't wait to get all my friends to join the next session!
Fantastic experience: I took the Guerrera Self Defense Intensive workshop in July, and I HIGHLY recommend it for those who want to get a basic understanding of multiple self-defense concepts. It is an intense weekend but very much worth it. Colleen creates a very safe space where you will feel comfortable with giving each lesson your all and not feeling weird about it or out of place. As stated prior, this is just an introduction. You won't become an expert over a weekend, however you will gather insight about your body and spatial awareness, build camaraderie, and gain confidence to continue classes at N-Flux.
Fantastic experience: The Guererra womens self defense intensive course is amazing and will likely be coming back for more courses. Such an inclusive and supportive environment!
Fantastic experience: I have tried/taken martial arts classes at about 5 or so different places, and there is almost always a great, supportive community that will help you get more fit. BUT at N-flux there is great community AND great curriculum AND it's welcoming for small feminine people and newbies. Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time is SO intimidating, I don't care who you are. But this is one of the first places where it was comfortable to do so. Not only that, but the way that Chris and Gonz structure classes actually help you make sense of moves in a quicker time frame. It's all really well thought out, and it's a place to be challenged in the best ways. I can't recommend it enough! :)
Fantastic experience: Went to N-Flux while I was in DC visiting my daughter. She's been going for over a year and speaks highly of it. I can see why. It was a GREAT workout. Tremendous camaraderie between the attendees and between the attendees and Chris the owner. I highly recommend it.
Fantastic experience: I went to self defense for women and femmes with Colleen! Amazing course! Colleen has designed the curriculum with both practicality and thoughtfulness in mind. She made sure all of us felt safe, cared for, and heard throughout the experience, even as we were tackling difficult topics and potentially triggering exercises and drills. She and the folks helping out were very knowledgeable and gave great pointers and individual attention to everyone in the class. I’ve come out of the weekend very sore, but feeling empowered and much more confident in my ability to defend myself in an emergency. This class has also inspired me to continue training in martial arts so that I continue to hone my self defense skills. Truly can’t recommend this highly enough.
Fantastic experience: Colleen and her team of instruction assistants are amazing. They truly create a great space for females to voice, share, and learn the everyday challenge to their safety. I learned a lot!
Fantastic experience: I had no prior experience with self defense or any martial art and my boyfriend bought me the Women and Femme self defense intensive course for this weekend. It was AMAZING, so inclusive of all experiences and fitness levels, talked about real world applications and scenarios and gave us a safe space to practice those scenarios and key moves to protect us. There were no gimmicks, just each person realizing their own strength and ability and personal strategy. The instructors were kind, inclusive, supportive, and I will definitely be returning for more classes. Thank you!!! [people, buy course passes for your partner, for yourself, for your family... they'll love it!!]
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend the Guerrera workshop and Colleen that I took with N-Flux. I took the workshop with my 12 year old daughter and we both had an incredible experience - both with Colleen and the other instructors and with the group of women in the workshop with us. We were a mix of women of different ages, sizes, life-experience, and abilities but we all felt included and comfortable - which for practicing something like this is so important. Colleen made every technique and strategy accessible and straightforward but we still learned so much. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: I took the Guerrera self-defense class out of pure curiosity and I LOVED IT! This was just the type of physical / mental challenge I was looking for and I mean that it wasn't difficult, just something that felt really great to achieve! Colleen, the lead instructor, is a powerhouse and her energy is contagious! I also appreciated the wholesome guidance from all 3 other instructors, ever watchful about our technique and form... encouraging us along the way. It was also amazing to bond with other women and femmes over such a particular and vulnerable practice. I'm so glad to have met all of them, THIS IS a safe space! Thank you Colleen, Sarah, Tahira, Riley, you all make such a great and diverse team! I highly recommend this experience to ANYONE. Go for it!
Fantastic experience: I attended an absolutely amazing, inclusive, and trauma-informed women's self defense class here. I wish this would be some sort of required teaching for all women and femmes not only because of what I learned but for how confident I (and my class) felt afterward. My class was a two-day session with Colleen and my first experience with self defense, and I learned so much. Could not possibly say anything but good things about this class. If you are on the fence about this- this is your sign to attend a guerrera session!
Fantastic experience: I traveled from Brooklyn to DC for the women’s self-defense intensive with Colleen Daly because I heard such great things about Colleen and couldn’t find anything comparable even in NYC. It was absolutely the best thing I’ve done for myself in years. The training, the environment, the instruction, the whole atmosphere was everything I was looking for. It was both incredibly tough and incredibly supportive. I was sore from head to toe, my knuckles were wrecked, and I had the time of my life. Will recommend to everyone I know.
Fantastic experience: I was a complete beginner to martial arts classes, and N-Flux was a fantastic, welcoming environment. There was a broad range of skill levels – from completely new people to seasoned professionals. Would highly recommend for someone looking for a place with a good sense of community, wide range of classes, or even a good open gym environment.
Fantastic experience: I went to self defense for femmes with Colleen and had the BEST time. A welcoming gym environment for women that you won’t find at other places. I feel strong and empowered and lucky to have taken the self defense course. Every woman in DC should take this course!! It is so worth every penny. Colleen goes above and beyond to help you outside of class and to get to know you personally. The environment is very supportive and helped with my anxiety going in. Great community at that gym. I will be back!
Fantastic experience: NFlux is led by amazing trainers who care about their students success and development. They get to know each student and their needs to ensure continued success and increased fitness and ability. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to increase mobility, strength, and endurance, as well as to anyone looking to train to defend themselves or compete in krav maga or ju jitsu. Chris and Colleen work hard to develop their students from multiple angles, and have built a great supportive family at NFlux. This gym is especially welcoming to women who want to advance in martial arts, a traditionally male dominated arena.
Fantastic experience: This place has been the best community since before the shutdown. The people here support each other and help each other learn. With COVID they've stepped up to the plate with keeping their members safe and healthy. Double temp checks, hand sanitizer, sanitizing body wipes, mat sanitizing between open gym sessions. Every member wears at least one mask (double masking isn't uncommon). The staff is friendly and understanding. Quick to help when needed. They teach in ways that the most inexperienced person will pick up quickly. Having access to class packs and being able to pause memberships really helps when it comes to affordability. They will always look out for you and make sure you get the best deals and instruction for your goals. They normally have programs that center on self defense, and are LGBTQ+ friendly and body positive. Colleen teaches tough love, but in a sense that you love yourself while becoming tough. This place and these programs have helped me immensely with the depression that came from the year that 2020 has been, and overall improved my mental health and physical wellbeing. In addition to being some of the best instructors, the staff is genuine, non judgemental, supportive, and still a bunch of bad a*es.
Fantastic experience: I've been training with the N-Flux team for years (even before they had adopted the N-Flux brand). The program and community are outstanding. Whether you are an experienced fitness enthusiast or a curious beginner, you will feel welcome and learn new skills. Chris and Colleen have also done an incredible job adapting to the COVID pandemic and are pushing out great digital content. Buy a gift card to support this wonderful team!
Fantastic experience: I moved away from DC, but one of the things I miss most is N-Flux. Really quality classes and instructors, can't recommend it highly enough.
Fantastic experience: Welcoming environment for beginners and experienced individuals alike. Everyone is treated with decency and respect. Knowledgeable staff, clean equipment. Online/On-Demand classes available too.
Fantastic experience: N-Flux is so great! Due to joining N-Flux, I developed, for the first time in my life, an interest in fitness and exercise because N-Flux showed me the path of holistic mind-body thinking and helped me foster a goal of improvement. I initially joined just to stay fit on a weekly basis, but now I also want to attain certain fitness goals and push myself more. One of the main reasons for this is the supportive and personalized atmosphere that keeps one coming back and that everyone who goes to N-Flux soaks in. My favorite classes are the mace training and boxing, but I recommend everything, and there's something for everyone of every level. The people are great, and of course, a special thanks to Chris and Colleen, who have made N-Flux what it is today. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: The happiest I've been in a long time! Working out here provides me with an amazing community of peers who aim to uplift and support each other, and the staff instruction is unmatched anywhere in the city. As a beginner I have never felt overwhelmed or intimidated. I cannot recommend N-Flux highly enough!
Fantastic experience: This is truly the best Krav gym I have ever joined. Colleen and Chris are so welcoming and phenomenal instructors. Their virtual workouts during quarantine are saving my sanity!
Fantastic experience: I have been at N-Flux for almost 9 months (amid a pandemic also) and I have to say this gym is amazing. I am very particular about environment and atmosphere of a gym and this place has a great one. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly who all want to work hard. I love the the way the classes are run and how they build off one another. Even if you are coming in brand new with no experience, it is not overwhelming and you will be able to keep up.
Fantastic experience: Overall my time at N-Flux has been a really positive experience! It’s a very welcoming environment and everyone works hard to cultivate an upbeat and respectful atmosphere. N-Flux offers a lot and I recommend that anyone at any skill level check them out for Krav/Boxing/HIIT/Jui Jitsu etc! They do yoga classes, too! The thing that initially drew me to N-Flux over other gyms in my area was the the diversity of the student population. I thought it reflected well of the instructors that they could effectively coach all body types and experience levels with equal amounts of skill and attention. My experiences thus far have reaffirmed this observation, as the instructors seem keen on keeping mental notes of individual student’s progress and giving personalized tips as they advance. There is truly no bias towards higher level “competition ready” students over newer students. Students themselves are friendly and classes are highly collaborative. More experienced students are eager to offer tips to newer students and adjust themselves during drills as to not overwhelm newcomers. Each of the instructors are highly decorated fighters and are incredibly knowledgeable. They both offer a lot of individualized instruction to students during each exercise and drill. They welcome student questions and seem happy to provide clarifications as needed.
Fantastic experience: It’s not an exaggeration to say that N-Flux changed my life. I’ve wanted to learn martial arts since I was a kid. However, it wasn’t until my first class at N-Flux that I felt someone was actually teaching me self defense instead of flashy gimmicks. It wasn’t until my first class at N-Flux that I ever wanted to spend so much time at a gym. Chris, Colleen, and the other N-Flux instructors are amazing, passionate, inspirational, and caring. They push you a lot, but know when to be patient. They've also created one of the most inviting and supportive communities you'll ever find. From krav maga, to boxing, to no gi jiu jitsu, to yoga, I learned so much over the past 2ish years. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been and have gotten to know some incredible people. If you’re on the fence, go–you won’t regret it.
Fantastic experience: I LOVE N-Flux! Everyday, the instructors push me to my limits and and beyond what I think is possible. I have learned a ton about personal defense in the few months I have been part of the gym. Not just that, I have made some great friendships as well. I am very thankful and happy to be a member of the N-Flux family!
Fantastic experience: There is no way that a review can convey how excellent N-flux is but I will give it my best try. I have been training at N-flux for almost 7 months now, and my classes there have quickly become one of my favorite parts of my week. The training curriculum is excellent, and holistic in approach. You will get a great workout but also a focused and nuanced approach to fitness and self-defense. Chris and Colleen are excellent instructors who have created a space that is inclusive and encouraging while simultaneously placing great focus on technique and safety. There is an emphasis placed on fluidity of movement and understanding how class drills translate to realistic defensive situations. Chris and Colleen will challenge you when you need it, but also be kind and constructive with their critiques. The studio also has fosters a wonderful community feeling. Students are friendly and offer each other helpful feedback, and often more experienced students partner with newer students to offer advice and tips on technique. Even when I was brand new, I always felt welcome in the space and it was really nice to have that since I was relatively new to DC when I started taking classes. I cannot recommend this studio highly enough. If you want a great workout with awesome people where you will learn and feel challenged, this is the place for you!
Fantastic experience: Awesome self-defense gym with an emphasis on well-rounded fitness and skills. Great, friendly environment to learn from passionate instructors who care about their students.
Fantastic experience: I had done quiet a bit of research and visited gyms before I decided to train at NFLUX. In terms of pricing and contracts it is the best place in the area for me. After having been member in gyms in Europe and Asia I have to say this place offers high quality training. There are several trainers and they all have different styles, so it does not get boring. But they all know what they are doing. The exercises make sense, you find a very balanced class variety, Krav Maga, Yoga, Kick Boxing or even endurance and strength training, using kettlebells, heavy bags and other equipment. The trainers definitely put a lot of thought and effort into it. Due to the variety in classes, caring and friendly trainers and great pricing this is my favorite place. My recommendation is to take a morning class (from 6.30 am) and smile all day in office, while not having to worry if your afternoon meeting will clash with your evening workout. Edited one year after initial review: Excellent. The results from training more than a year at NFLUX were beyond my expectations. Training here improved my fitness significantly and taught me new and valuable skills. And still there are so many secret moves one wants to unlock Trainers and advanced students here are so passionate about what they do and teach that it is inspiring. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: In the past I always struggled to motivate myself to regularly work out, but that completely reversed when I started coming to N-Flux: I just wish I had more hours in the week for more N-Flux. First of all, the classes are challenging and engaging. The instructors do a great job pushing you just the right amount, so as you learn one thing, there is a new technique to improve. If you're like me and get bored at a regular gym, classes at N-Flux are great because you are building up to something and there is more to think about (although I'll admit my brain gets pretty slow by the end of an intense class, so I can't say *much* thinking happens at that point...). The second thing that makes me excited to get out as much as I can is that the community is incredible -- supportive, kind, funny, diverse, interesting. You definitely don't feel inadequate as someone new and inexperienced: more experienced students are always willing and eager to help out. The instructors work hard to cultivate an environment that is welcoming and supportive. So here I am, probably in the best shape of my life after just a few months, and it felt so easy! Well, not the classes, which are hard in the best kind of way, but I would take heading over to N-Flux any day over tv, social media, reorganizing, or browsing funny animal videos on the internet. If you want to learn martial arts, get in shape, and have fun doing it -- look no further, N-Flux is where it's at!
Fantastic experience: If you want to learn a diverse range of proven effective martial arts, while simultaneously getting in the best shape of your life, then N-Flux is the place to be. The Krav classes, kickboxing, boxing, Jiujitsu, and other classes are all stellar. Chris and Colleen are both phenomenal teachers, as well as world-class practitioners and competitors, which is not always the case. Being able to do something extremely well and also being able to teach that skill to others is not easy; yet both of them are highly accomplished in international competition, and have a gift for teaching and passing on their skill to others. Their passion for martial arts is obvious - they love what they do, and do it extremely well. Plus they make the training fun without compromising the quality. The curriculum is well-designed and comprehensive, helping to shape beginner students into confident martial artists, and taking intermediate students to even higher levels on a clear and progressive path. The class environment is highly supportive, both from the teachers and the other students. The fact that roughly half of all the students are female says a lot - Chris and Colleen create an environment in which anyone can feel comfortable in training, regardless of gender, size, experience, or background. A lot of martial arts gyms are dripping with ego, which usually makes for an uncomfortable environment, or even unsafe. But you can feel confident that your safety is taken seriously and you will be treated with respect. All in all - I can't say enough good things about N-Flux. Highly recommended for solid martial arts and getting super fit!
Fantastic experience: I've been going to N-Flux for a couple of months now and cannot recommend it highly enough. It only took one class for me to know that I'd found someplace great to learn. Chris and Colleen are wonderful instructors who really emphasize why we're learning what we're learning, and how we would actually apply it in a self-defense scenario. Class sizes are relatively small, which means everyone can get more individual feedback from the instructor. The other students are also helpful, encouraging, and passionate. It's the kind of environment that makes me want to push myself harder and get better, and to help those around me do the same.
Fantastic experience: N-Flux offers a range of martial arts and conditioning classes that are top notch. I've been going for a few months now, taking Krav Maga and some boxing classes mainly, and I love this gym. Everyone is very friendly and supportive. And every class motivates you to push harder and try things you haven't done before. Colleen and Chris are great instructors. You can tell they're passionate about what they do, and they're also very patient and will work with you to really nail down a move. I highly recommend this gym to anyone interested in learning self-defense techniques. It's also great for those looking to be totally wiped out after a class (looking at you Heavy Bag HIIT).
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend N-Flux for learning how to fight and defend yourself through the Krav Maga classes. I've trained here for 3 years. Chris is an excellent, engaging instructor who explains things clearly. He focuses less on mechanics and more on how the body would fight naturally. You learn how to fight at the outset by working with your classmates in a safe environment. This approach significantly improved my skills and helped me become a better fighter and more physically fit. The other classes are also helpful for cardio and strength conditioning.
Fantastic experience: I started taking Krav Maga classes at N-Flux about two years ago and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Chris, Colleen, and Kathryn are amazing instructors who have created a safe, fun, and empowering environment. I have also found the more advanced students to be incredibly helpful and encouraging. If you are looking for a place to try out self defense for the first time or continue with more advanced training this is definitely the place. I would also strongly recommend the other classes offered by the studio - boxing, kickboxing, grappling (ground fighting), sparring, and urban ninja (strength/conditioning). No matter which class you take you are guaranteed to get a great workout and learn some very practical skills. And make friends!
Fantastic experience: N-Flux is the best place in DC to learn krav maga. I signed up for their foundations class when I found myself with more free time and interest in challenging myself in a new way. I can't recommend the instructors (Colleen and Chris) and their classes enough. Not only are they great instructors, but they've also created a welcoming community, even for beginners. In my opinion, that's a rare find in fitness/movement studios. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: I've been training at N-Flux for almost three years and cannot recommend it enough. The instructors work to create challenging but fun programs, and each class is different so I never get bored. Expect an intense but worthwhile workout! Chris, Colleen, and Victoria are great motivators who will work with you to progress at any fitness level. Class sizes are small so everyone receives individualized attention and feedback. N-Flux also has a great community. More experienced students are welcoming towards beginners and offer feedback. It's a very inclusive and female friendly space.
Fantastic experience: I can’t recommend N-Flux highly enough. I’ve been training here for about 10 months. Chris and Colleen foster an amazing environment that is both highly challenging and supportive. They are both wonderful teachers. I recommend every trainer here—Kathryn’s morning classes are different every time and have gotten me in the best shape of my life, and both Scott and Maicie lead yoga practices that have improved how I move. This is more than just a gym—it’s a community that I wasn’t expecting to find and feel lucky to have stumbled upon. I came in looking for a new workout and discovered a passion for a whole new sport that I had known nothing about. (I encourage you to be open-minded—I was drawn to kickboxing initially but have come to love jiu jitsu and Krav!)
Fantastic experience: The Krav classes have been exactly what I needed. Hard work, practical drills, helpful instruction. Could not recommend more highly.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place to train - everyone's super friendly and the instructors are encouraging/welcoming. Classes are always challenging and you learn a lot about self-defense no matter what your prior experience is. They have team events if you are interested in competing in local open-tournaments.
Fantastic experience: The best place to train in DC! I have a background in mixed martial arts and muay thai, but have fallen in love with Krav. Chris is a great coach and no prior experience is necessary. You'll get an intense workout and learn the practical skills of self-defense. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Fantastic experience: I've trained in Krav Maga for over nine years in a few different schools, and Chris is one of the best instructors I've met. He is passionate about self-defense, and that passion comes through in the way he teaches. Above all else, Chris is committed to ensuring that his students have the tools they need to get home safe. You'll get in better shape training here, but part of what sets Chris apart in this very physical activity is actually mental. Ask Chris a question about a technique, and you can tell that he has given it a lot of thought (and that he enjoyed thinking about it). He's always searching for ways to improve the system. Dogma is less important than what actually works. Don't think that you need to be an "alpha male" to train here. On a typical night, you'll find people across various age ranges, body types, and walks of life all working together. It's a welcoming environment. If you're interested in learning how to defend yourself, N-Flux is definitely the best option in DC.
Fantastic experience: N-Flux is a great place to learn how to defend yourself. Chris is a very knowledgeable instructor. He is also very patient, especially if you are new to martial arts and don't know what you are doing in the beginning. He has a lot of experience, teaching and otherwise, and it shows in his training methods. There is a structure and curriculum in place. You progress to higher levels of training (Levels 1-3) after you have mastered the fundamentals and passed a test. The community is awesome. People are kind and helpful. More experienced students ensure that beginners constantly train with proper form and technique. People participate in activities outside of training too. The best part is besides krav-maga, they also offer a wide variety of classes including jujitsu, boxing, kick-boxing and yoga. Colleen will also train you to be a ninja and I mean, how do you top that? Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: The instructors at N-Flux are welcoming and accommodating to people of all different fitness levels, while also challenging us to push ourselves towards improvement with every class. Friendly atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Class setup: good class times for people who work regular hours, lots of variation and frequency- the classes fit around my schedule and not the other way around which is nice, small class sizes too Ease of registration: online, super easy, updates immediately Class rotation: For Krav it’s weekly cycles of classes, so Saturday through Friday will be the same class. This repetition lets you get in enough practice before moving on to the next concept. Instructor: The instructor is amazing. Besides his very broad background in fighting and self-defense he’s also just a really good teacher. He notices small things about what students are doing and adapts that to later classes. In one Saturday class we were kinda fumbling through an exercise. Same class on Monday he broke down the exercise into multiple steps to really walk everyone through how to do it properly. If he notices an analogy works really well he’ll use it more often. If you’re in the same class more than once during the week he’ll throw in some new drills to keep you engaged. It’s a very good balance when you have both regulars and newcomers. He’s the appropriate amount of pushy and helpful – making sure you understand what you’re doing and providing personal feedback, while encouraging you to test your own physical limits. He’s always super patience with questions and explains concepts well. Workout: Building your strength and endurance are the first two challenges of fighting and between those two things you will sweat a lot. Crowd: This isn’t one of those super intimidating male-dominated training centers. There are a few people who have been training a long time and know what they’re doing, but it’s mostly lots of super chill, strong women. Competition between classmates is zero; everyone’s there to learn. Because you’re usually working with a partner you help each other improve which makes N-Flux feel more like a community than other gyms/activities. It’s not a place where you can zone out or get lost in the crowd; with the small class size you’re going to get individual attention and you’re going to be pushed. It's a really freakin fun workout.
Fantastic experience: I have been training at N-Flux for 8 months and can't recommend it highly enough. Chris is a phenomenal instructor. He designs his classes so that you are continually challenged and provides personalized, critical feedback. I was drawn to the program for the kickboxing and sparring, but have really enjoyed learning Krav and other forms of defense.
