Balance Functional Fitness: Opinions
Positive experience: Nice box. Met some nice members and a cool coach. Surprised by the air conditioning and the lack of a rack. I would visit again. It's not a must stop but if you're in the area and looking for a WOD, stop in.
Positive experience: Maxx Chewning curls at the squat rack. Avoid going during his workout sessions
Fantastic experience: Lots of great equipment
Fantastic experience: I worked out at Balance for the four years I lived in downtown DC. Monthly rates are very reasonable and the multi-level facility has all the functional fitness and powerlifting tools you could ever want. As long as I avoided peak hours, the number of humans was very manageable. The Balance staff was friendly and handled the pandemic transition quite well. I don't think you'll find a better gym anywhere in DC.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and awesome coaches. I highly recommend if you are in the city.
Fantastic experience: It took leaving DC and looking for a new gym to know how good I had it at Balance. The coaches are fantastic, the price is one of the best in DC, and if the sense of community doesn't motivate you to get to the gym and improve yourself, nothing will. Yes, the classes can be a bit crowded but I've never been turned away, the coaches always know how to make it work. And yes, all these people mean the equipment is not the most immaculate. Ultimately, though, you're there to get a workout, get stronger, and to be a part of a supportive community that'll help you get there. You'll get all the above here and more.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with incredible coaches. I was in DC for a summer internship and regularly attended the evening classes for the 12 weeks I was here. The community was great, the workouts were challenging, and I learned a lot from the coaches. There was a wide range of Crossfit experience in the classes, making it easy to fit in. They also offered me the best rate for summer interns that I could find in the area (and the membership was unlimited!) I strongly recommend checking this gym out and I hope that I can come back to visit sometime!
Fantastic experience: I had the pleasure of working out here for a month while in DC. It's a really great gym, lots of good coaching and they pay attention to everyone to help everyone get better. The programming was well done and thoughtful. I think it's representative of the culture of the gym that even though the 715 am class was sometimes crowded everyone worked it out together and there were never any bad attitudes. I will definitely drop in if I am back in the area.
Fantastic experience: Good classes and staff
Fantastic experience: So many options for all fitness levels and interests. I don't use the crossfit 'box' but I have heard only good things. Great space on the top floor for stretching and floor movements. I've also rarely seen it so crowded that I couldn't get a workout in.
Fantastic experience: great gym
Fantastic experience: Best gym in DC
Fantastic experience: I've worked out two times now at Crossfit Balance and have visited all of their 3 locations, which include Thomas Circle (just worked out during free time and not a Crossfit class), Foggy Bottom (free time- Did a WOD of my own), and Glover Park, which is my personal favorite (worked out twice with a Crossfit class). Both times were amazing. Kudos to Danielle, who "brings it" as a coach. You can tell she doesn't just coach people, she lives it, and her energy is contagious. Sort of like, if I'm learning how to shoot, I want to go to a known marksman. Danielle, it is obvious, can probably outwork anybody in the gym most days. More than that, this Crossfit box seems to understand proper technique and injury recovery over just going Rx on a WOD. That's important. In a nutshell, my observations on the gym spaces- 1) Glover Park - not near a metro, so you hve to drive, but. If pluses are the space. Bottom floor is for Crossfit WODS, but the 2nd floor has enough space and equipment for your own WOD and mobility exercises. Also, you get two hours of free parking in the parking garage - a major perk. 2). Thomas Circle - probably has the most space for working out, but, seemed a bit more broken up with smaller workout areas. That being said, I couldn't try out the 1st floor Crossfit area, which looked pretty nice. Near metro. 3). Foggy Bottom - by far, the nicest, with a salt water pool and very nice showers and programmable lockers. Near metro. I wrote a book, but there you are.
Positive experience: Just joined this a few weeks ago. Staff is friendly, lots of options.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely can't beat all the available classes, and equipment for the price. Especially for DC.
Fantastic experience: The coaches are fantastic about critiquing form and helping people to improve toward their fitness goals. The community is very welcoming, and I'm particularly fond of the 6:15am weekday class, which has a great group of attendees each day and tends to be pretty gender-balanced--a rarity at a crossfit gym.
