Pittsburgh Fitness Project: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Great environment! Supportive and encouraging staff/team. I have been a member of PFP since 2017 and although my experience is mostly related to the barbell club, I believe the culture I have witnessed applies to the entire gym. My favorite thing about the gym's culture is its focus on inclusivity. The membership is a wide-range of folks from different cultures, which I think add a richness to the experience. The coaches are highly supportive and take care with writing workout programming that is appropriate for each client or class. Even if someone is not interested in attending group sessions/classes, with inclusivity as a focus, I have witnessed some of the open-gym members still becoming "part of the family." I recommend PFP to anyone interested in putting more focus on their health. With a solid inclusive environment already in place, take comfort in that all shapes/cultures/experience-levels are welcome.

Fantastic experience: I recently started working out at PFP and working with my trianer, Tom three times a week. I was nervous to start working out again, but Tom and the team has made the process easy and fun. I always feel welcome, accepted, and supported by Tom and the PFP community every time I'm in the gym. They provide excellent coaching and training expertise in a supportive and fun community. Even on the days I don't feel like working out, I leave feeling better and proud of myself. Thank you PFP team!

Fantastic experience: I have been working out at the Pittsburgh Fitness Project since August 2018. It is a great gym with abundant space, especially for those who prefer to exercise with free weights and using their body weight. Additionally, the gym offers various classes with trainers, who are also available for private training, from workouts concentrating on different parts of the body to yoga sessions. The trainers are professional and extremely knowledgeable in their field. My trainers, first Sándor and then Wes, have helped me build muscle and physically become more toned. The Pittsburgh Fitness Project is also in a convenient location with available parking, which is a big plus in Pittsburgh.

Fantastic experience: The best. Best collection of people. Best programs. Best and most fun times. Best exercising. I wish I had more time in the day to spend at PFP. Seriously - you'll feel like part of the crew day 1.

Fantastic experience: Been coming to classes for almost three years! Love the entire team here, and particularly that the group classes are as difficult as you want to make them. There's no pressure, but if you want to increase your abilities, they will help you endlessly! Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: I really needed a personal trainer and not just another gum membership. PFP is perfect! It is welcoming and accepting of everyone. I never feel out of place. Everyone is friendly. The new massage therapy space is wonderful! I finally found a "gym" that doesn't make me feel awkward or uncomfortable...and it is very affordable!

Fantastic experience: Was looking for a place to learn how to Olympic lift and came across PFP! They have been nothing more than welcoming, helpful and awesome! Love going to this gym and they build a very beginner friendly environment HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Fantastic experience: The atmosphere here is one of kindness and friendship. There is a strong sense of community that is very close yet open to new people joining. The coaches are knowledgeable and are able to help people at all skill levels. You never feel belittled or weak. The coaches work with you to become the best you can be. If you want to begin your fitness journey or seek to continue it, definitely come here!

Fantastic experience: I'm a known gym hopper. I'm the type who get's excited about a specific training style or class - and then get's completely burnt out on it. I love training with Jake at PFP because he encourages all of my fitness interests. No session is like the last. Some days I squat heavy, others are more HIIT based, and other times we lean into my gymnast background and work on handstands and intricate balances. I just celebrated my two year anniversary and I plan on celebrating many more. And the coolest part is, I'm comfortable with every single trainer, not just Jake. I love working out in a place that is actually judgement free and encourages me to live my best life. PFP truly is my #fitfam!

Fantastic experience: My experience with PFP has been incredibly positive. I've found the environment, the classes, and my training sessions with Tony to be very supportive but also challenging in a really productive way. When I first started coming to PFP I was motivated to improve my overall health but was clueless on how to do it. I needed guidance, expertise, and encouragement to try things outside my comfort zone. Tony and the PFP staff have provided that and more. My expectations have been met and exceeded, joining PFP and training with Tony has made an enormous difference and improvement in my life.

Fantastic experience: I really think the classes motivate me to exercise. I find it much easier to commit a particular hour of my day to exercise than forcing myself to fit it in at the end of the day. Also, the instructors, to a person, are very knowledge and ensure I push myself each sesion, so I know I'll be getting a good workout each time.

Fantastic experience: I was a member for a short period of time while in Pitt on a job. The place was very well equipped, CLEAN, and they were accommodating to my needs of a short membership.

Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed the option for open gym. I follow online programming and it is very difficult to find an oly gym that offers open gym. Very clean space with great up to date equipment. Awesome spot for a workout.

Fantastic experience: I visited them last December when travelling for work. I do olympic weightlifting and I know how rare it is to find a gym as well equipped as PFP. Great location, great hours, friendly people. I think the only thing missing would be a nice set of jerk blocks but otherwise it was a very good experience

Fantastic experience: PFP is the perfect embodiment of personalized wellness. It is a place where you can work on fitness goals that are important to you, not the person next to you. I have been coming to PFP for over three years, and this is the first place where I have felt challenged and seen results — challenged in ways like learning how to kettlebell swing or lift a barbell and results in actual muscle definition! The moment you walk through the doors, you feel welcomed, inspired, and ready to go. It is a fun and encouraging environment. Members want everyone to succeed, not just trainers. And if you are unsure about a movement, a trainer is there to show you how to do it, without any sort of shame or embarrassment attached. It doesn't matter your fitness level; PFP is the place to find your best potential, and oh yeah, have fun along the way. I LOVE IT!

Robin Schweitzer 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: PFP is awesome. If you have aesthetic goals they will certainly help you meet them, but that isn't really the focus of most of the people that work out here. Overall this is a very body-positive space. You're much more likely to get feedback on your form or progress in fitness than on your appearance. People of all shapes and sizes work out here and everyone is super welcoming! I have made a lot of progress in my lifts and found a great community to boot.

Fantastic experience: The trainers are professional, educational, and motivating. The people who take the fitness classes always seem to be very supportive and non-judgmental. If you're looking for professional trainers, small classes, and a non-judgmental atmosphere, this is it!

Fantastic experience: When I got out of college I was really starting to get into olympic weightlifting. I was trying to self teach myself, but I just kept coming up short. While I continued to struggle, one of my buddies told me about PFP, and Tom Duer. I went there for a barbell assessment, and from that second on I knew this was the gym for me. I signed up on the spot and it has been nothing but positive results and good vibes ever since. Tom, and the rest of his trainers are excellent coaches who work very well with the clients and write programs that are designed for YOU. Not the cookie cutter average you see in most gyms. They also provide a great array of group classes that would put most commercial gym classes to shame. The atmosphere at the gym is encouraging, upbeat, and positive.. ALWAYS. The coaches, athletes, and clients there always try to pull the most out of you so that you can achieve the best version of yourself. It feels like we’re all one big family every time I’m there. Ever since I’ve signed up there, my clean and jerk has increased by 20kg (and climbing), my snatch by 30kg (and climbing), and my back and front squat by almost 50kg. And thanks to these guys, this December I’ll be competing in my first weightlifting competition! Its really amazing what a good atmosphere and even better coaches can do for you. I HIGHLY recommend this gym to any aspiring Olympic weightlifter, bodybuilder, or even someone who just wants to get in shape, move better, and build a healthier self inside and out. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Fantastic experience: Awesome facility. Was in from out of town on business, found the gym on google, called and they said no problem to drop-in. Specifically came because they had olympic lifting mats and weights, could drop weights etc. 4-5 platforms, lots of Rogue bars, Rogue plates, chalk. Everything you need.

Fantastic experience: I've been doing 1:1 personal training with Sandor at PFP for almost two years. He is probably the best personal trainer I have ever had, and I've tried a lot. He is a stickler for good form, understands physiology really well, and thoroughly explains how to go through a movement and what it should be working. He's also good about knowing your personality and what you need from him as a trainer. He has a passion for fitness that's infectious, and truly cares about his clients. I can't recommend him highly enough!!

Fantastic experience: People there are REALLY nice! They'll help you with modifications if you can't do something and they're always watching out for your form. I've been taking personal training for almost a year and I've made huge gains in my flexibility and strength. I'd recommend this place to anybody that's looking for a gym where people like to put in the work and are not obnoxious.

Fantastic experience: I love this place! My personal trainer, Jake, is amazing! He has helped me so much with my running form and I am now pain free when I run!! The rest of the staff is also very knowledgeable and very welcoming. I love that they use science backed methods to help you achieve your goals. They also have a great class schedule to suit everyones needs. I highly recommend PFP to anyone looking for an amazing place to workout!

Fantastic experience: I have taken classes and also personal training sessions here for a little over a year. I started out pretty weak and broken down both mentally and physically. I never felt one minute of judgement at any time. Just lots of support and respect for my commitment to improve my health. There are people from all walks of life at every point in their fitness journey. Older (like me), younger, skinny, overweight, and everyone I’ve encountered (staff and gym members alike) have been nothing but helpful and kind. Staff is super knowledgeable, warm and friendly. If you are just starting out and haven’t been active for awhile, I recommend investing in some personal training sessions to see where you really are and Just get some good , solid direction to avoid injury. It’s not cheap, but worth every penny. As you improve, you can transition over to the classes and not feel out of place.

Fantastic experience: I was in Pittsburgh for a few days and looking for a place to lift while I was in town. PFP is such a great facility, great equipment and awesome atmosphere. If you’re ever in town I highly recommend dropping in!

Fantastic experience: I avoided this place for a long time because of the price tag. It's definitely more expensive than your typical chain gyms, but I'm so happy I finally made the switch. Great staff, nice facility, and fun classes. (I never took a fitness class in my life before joining this place; after going to a few at PFP, I liked them so much I bought an unlimited pass.) If you're hesitating to check it out like I did, I can't emphasize this enough: give it a try. PFP is worth every penny.

Fantastic experience: Great place to get the job done. Bootcamps, barbells work outs, kettle bells.... all the bells, lots of extra whistles (chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, dietician) but none of the BS. ❤️

Fantastic experience: This gym has excellent equipment and plenty of space. It is never too crowded and the staff is courteous and professional. I do not use the classes provided, and it has been perfect for my needs. Whether you are interested in training or not, this is a good spot for anyone looking to workout in a clean, well built gym for a very reasonable rate.

Fantastic experience: I took a Wine and Squat event class here. This convinced me to purchase a groupon for 10 classes for around $40 which is a great deal. I like groupon for trying new places. Also, I'm already a member at other studios and just wanted a place to fill in the occasional gap where I needed a workout. The gym is bright and clean. There are lockers for your stuff. Multiple single bathrooms that are large suitable for changing (not stalls, a room with a toilet and sink). Water fountains and bottled water available. Bring your own towel if you're a sweater. I mostly took the power hour classes which were all great. I particularly enjoyed Jillian's classes. I did take Zumba strong once. I probably would have taken it again, but I was the only class attendee when I went and it felt awkward having everyone else in the gym able to watch. Not sure if this was a fluke or if this class isn't well attended. If you're looking for a place to workout where the workouts are constantly changing and challenging, I would recommend this place. The only reason I stopped going is because it was similar to a place that I already attend, and I just feel a stronger bond to my original gym. Also, I decided to add spinning and barre to my week rather than more of the same stuff. Everyone in class, including the instructors, was friendly and found humor when things got hard-- which I find important. They do barbell training in this gym as well. Which is my only negative. I personally don't enjoy hearing the barbells banging the floor. So if you're an anxious person or have ptsd, you should take that into consideration.

Fantastic experience: I had the most wonderful massage by Claudia! I cannot recommend her enough to everyone interested in body work. Not only is she so friendly, kind, and personable, but she also is just super knowledgable and skillful in her work. Go pay her a visit immediately if not sooner :)

Fantastic experience: This is the place to go if you want to meet your fitness goals! Since joining I have lost fat and gained muscle in a supportive and fun atmosphere. Tony has refined my diet plan and he keeps the workouts challenging yet interesting. He is very motivational and before you know it the session is over and I’m dripping with sweat. Definitely recommend Pittsburgh Fitness Project!

Fantastic experience: The classes are great, challenging without being overwhelming. The instructors are always changing things up so it never gets boring. The environment is so much better than any of the big box gyms. It's definitely worth checking it out, no matter what your level of fitness.

Fantastic experience: I've been with Tom for several years now as he's gone from strength to strength. His philosophy of training and wellness and vision for PFP are spot-on, as is the culture he's managed to grow there. They train people of all sizes and fitness levels, right up to Rather Serious weightlifters, and nobody is ever made to feel unwelcome or intimidated. Many big companies have bold claims about what they provide in terms of inclusive atmosphere, but fall far short. PFP actually provides. Every trainer really knows their stuff and how to get you to achieve what you didn't think you could. My wife and I are very happy members.

Fantastic experience: I have gone to PFP since they opened. Previously I was a member at LAF in Bakery Square, and PFP was a welcome change from the big corporate gym atmosphere. The personal interaction between the staff and clients makes for a much more welcoming environment. Tom and Brian have brought in a fantastic staff and created a great atmosphere to workout, whether it is through personal training or group fitness. There is lots of parking available and the location is great. Stop in today to check out PFP!

Fantastic experience: Ive attended Pittsburgh Fitness Project classes over the last 2 years. They will modify the workout to any fitness level need. My personal favorites are PFP Strong and Power Hour. In Nov 2017 I started personal training sessions with Tonya 2x week. My goal was to focus on building strength. She is great at explaining the areas to focus on, working multiple muscles through a single movement, and we have yet to repeat the same exercises. She keeps it fun by incorporating ropes, kettle bells, sled push, boxes, TRX, ski urg, barbell, calisthenics, and stretching into sessions. I've learned so much from her and it was the best decision to begin investing in my health. All the instructors are helpful and motivating. Any doubts I've had about my capabilities have been tested, guided through coaching, and proved my self doubt wrong. Everyone belongs here when you walk through the doors. They truly care and the atmosphere is welcoming.

Fantastic experience: Went to their grand opening today and had lots of fun. Their workouts are doable and challenging. They have HIIT mixed with body weight exercises, battle ropes, medicine ball and dumbbell. They have strength classes and Pilates too
