College Avenue Gym, located in New Brunswick, is a great facility tailored for Rutgers University students, faculty, and staff, offering a variety of workout and recreational options. With features like an indoor rock climbing area, wrestling/training rooms, and a spacious gym, it provides an excellent environment for physical activities.

- Indoor rock climbing facility for enthusiasts.
- Friendly and knowledgeable staff committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere.
- A long-standing tradition with community events like the Rutgers BIG Chill 5K.
- Clean bathrooms and reliable equipment.
- Access to various sports and recreational activities.

Considerations:
- The gym can be quite crowded, especially during peak hours, which may lead to waiting for equipment.
- Some areas are noted for being hot and needing improvements, such as air conditioning and locker room conditions.
- While the facilities offer a wide range of options, certain equipment is described as outdated.
Despite these challenges, many users appreciate the vibrant community and supportive staff, making it a favorable option for those affiliated with the university.
College Avenue Gym: Opinions
Positive experience: Indoor stadium was hot
Positive experience: Good gym for students and staff to workout and have recreational time in. The facility has an indoor rock climbing area, wrestling/training room/underground fitness center, and a large gym in the back. Bathrooms and showers are usually clean and work, only negative thing is there are usually a lot of people using the facility and its very hot inside!
Fantastic experience: I've been attending and participating in the Rutgers BIG Chill 5K for nearly 10 yrs. It's has been and still is a family tradition we attend annually! I have a sister-in-law employed there, a niece and niece-in-law and friends who graduated from Rutgers! I love what they do for their and our community! In short, I love the warm, friendly, and caring staff, volunteers, and people involved! I especially Thank all your law enforcement agencies for their help and concerns and making us feel safe and secure! :-)
Fantastic experience: Nice and big
Negative experience: The gym is not that great. Not enough equipment given the number of people. Way too crowded and the music is not that great either. The equipment is old and never maintained well.
Positive experience: Not a bad gym, but it does suffer from being the oldest one. The weight room is small, busy, and cramped (and smelly).
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities inside what looks like an old building. The basket ball court is great and so is the weights room. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. This is open only to Rutgers University students, faculty and staff. This is one of several gymnasiums that Rutgers University has but this is probably the only one on College Avenue campus.
Fantastic experience: Great
Fantastic experience: Great place to see wrestling
Fantastic experience: Birthplace of Rutgers Wrestling...like taking a trip back in time. Very well taken care of over the years...⚔️⚔️
Positive experience: We went for rutgers ballroom dance. Had a great time.
Fantastic experience: Amazing workout and such a sense of community.
Negative experience: If you want to play basketball here, I would not recommend it. There is a nice annex gym with 3 point lines that they close down due to covid restrictions still to this day. You will be hounded if while running down the court your mask goes beneath your nose. Most of the staff is understanding of this but others will end the games and kick you out if you are playing basketball and take a breathe with no mask. If the covid guidelines change the gym will be good, but one of the managers is relentless with making sure the mask is above the nose at all times. If you like to breathe while playing basketball, go to any other Rutgers gym.
Fantastic experience: Great family gym. ♥
Fantastic experience: Amazing workout and such a sense of community. So happy to have found this gym family! Give it a try!!
Positive experience: it’s always full. not enough Ab Workout space.
Fantastic experience: home of the 76 final four scarlet knights
Fantastic experience: Good gym associated with the school not huge but historic
Fantastic experience: Only place at RU with a rock gym
Fantastic experience: Good place for Rutgers students. Lots to do
Fantastic experience: Rutgers did this awsome kids program, so I visited the gym. Big sportsplex experience. Nice wall for rock climbing enthusiasts.
Fantastic experience: The barn as it's been known as in the past is a New Brunswick campus gym and also event space for various student organizations and other Rutgers functions
Fantastic experience: Wondering weightlifting room, great for competitors and trainees.
Fantastic experience: Great intimate setting for College Volleyball!
Fantastic experience: Nice place
Fantastic experience: Small cardio/ weight lifting room, but it's never super crowded and I've never had to wait for a machine. Staff is friendly & most people clean their machines after use. 10/10.
Fantastic experience: Very good place
Fantastic experience: Great rutgers spot.....
Fantastic experience: Got a good work out in! Had a great time in cxworx class!
Fantastic experience: Good for kids swimming classes
Negative experience: No air, super warm watching a volleyball game. Can only imagine how bad it was for the players.
Fantastic experience: Small cardio/ weight lifting room, but it's never super crowded and I've never had to wait for a machine. Staff is friendly & most people clean their machines after use. 10/10.
Negative experience: It would have been better if it was closer to elevation burger on college ave at the yard
Negative experience: Cramped, can’t lift unless the powerlifting area is open. The hours are not convenient.
Positive experience: I was here for the annual Rutgers Ballroom Competition. Decent venue, close to food.
Positive experience: So so
Fantastic experience: Nice place
Positive experience: It's decent, need better guest service.
Positive experience: Need to stop charging non-RU students for guest pass everyday to get in. Guest pass fee should be weekly and a non-disclaimer form should be signed.
Fantastic experience: Graduation ceremony very clean
Fantastic experience: Wresting Club
Positive experience: Plenty of free weights and there is also a power gym nearby
Positive experience: The underground gym is really damp and humid but the good part is it has an indoor rock climbing facility!
Positive experience: Please repair the bathrooms. They are very old. Also, please install air conditioner at this building. It's always hot in there, hard to breath after you run some full court games and are extremely exhausted. However, there are many basketball courts there, very large in size. There is more than enough space for people to play. Haven't checked out the weight room yet, excited to check it soon
Positive experience: good gym to play basketball and many sports
Positive experience: Too warm
Negative experience: Terrible locker room, the gym and locker room smell.
Positive experience: You have to be a member to use. They have great programs, including swim lessons and rock climbing lessons. Free parking with a paid lesson or program
Fantastic experience: Parking is horrible.
Fantastic experience: My son goes for swimming classes here, he love it .. amazing place ...
Fantastic experience: Good facility.
Fantastic experience: Ok gym! a little rusty and old school. But it does have everything you can think of.
Positive experience: Too packed to enjoy the fitness process
Positive experience: Super packed, but go to the power gym inside or the boxing room.
Positive experience: Good variety of sports and workout options.
Positive experience: My kids have gone for there swim program and i absolutely love it
Positive experience: Always crowded. Rutgers needs to upgrade.
Positive experience: Really crowded considering how many students there are on College Ave, but if you don't want to go to the Busch or Livingston gyms, it isn't half bad. Just plan on waiting for benches or altering your workout regiment if weights / benches are taken.
Positive experience: The treadmill is ridiculous. It's one of those that has no bottom cover in the front and the pause button is extremely slow, which might cause an accident. Other rooms such as the basketball court or martial arts is good, but the workout are is too packed and tight. Very discouraging.
