Fantastic experience: For over two years, I've been a consistent member of the YMCA, mainly using the exercise equipment and sauna. The equipment is up-to-date and easy to use. The outdoor space is also a lovely spot with a cushioned floor to do floor work on. I enjoy the community feeling of seeing familiar faces and neighbors often. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Fantastic experience: I love our Black Mountain YMCA. The facilities are beautiful with great equipment and fun classes. The staff and instructors are super knowledgeable and friendly. It's a reflection of our amazing community. I always feel uplifted and better for going.

Negative experience: Update: 1 year later and the YMCA staff still don't care about this safety issue with the heat in the gym. Moved from 2 to 1 star for lack of action. There is no need to run the heat to 71 in a tiny gym. This is the upper limit of the suggested ACSM guidelines for gym temperature. Taking ambient air and lack of air flow into account (there are two residential size ceiling fans here), the actual temperature is likely ABOVE the suggested limits.

Fantastic experience: Love the classes and instructors! Pool is very nice and never too crowded. Staff is always warm and welcoming. Locker rooms are clean. I don’t use the equipment, but my husband routinely does and has never had any complaints. Lots of regulars so it’s easy to get to know people. Only wish there was a climbing wall or basketball/racketball court for the bigger kiddos but space is limited. Overall, we really enjoy it!

Negative experience: The placement of machines are horrible in a already super small space and it gets crowded , very crowded. Needs more room .

Fantastic experience: Small gym compared to others but great facility and pool. I’ve enjoyed the classes, the teachers are great, and the childcare is reliable. I love our local Y!

Fantastic experience: Encouraging and accomplished teachers challenge me while teaching me how to avoid injury. The variety of offerings keeps me interested and working on different fitness goals.

Positive experience: Quiet little YMCA location. Weekend hours are really odd but I guess that's the location. Small but has everything you need for a good workout. The hot tub is nice too.

Positive experience: Newer facility, well maintained. A typical variety of classes are offered. Nice mix of people who attend regularly yet it's not overcrowded. Pool is always reasonably warm and I appreciate that the temps and chlorine levels are routinely checked. Also, the chlorine levels are not too excessive so it's sanitary but not astringent. A "thank you" to staff and management.

Positive experience: Interior does not hold up to the appealing architecture of the building. Would really benefit from some interior upgrades and new cardio equipment. Equipment is also too close together. I would get rid of a few to make it less crowded. Way too hot. Turn the AC up or open some doors and windows… or put in some industrial fans. No need for heating in a gym during the winter. Save some $$$ on your electric bill. Overall though not a bad facility just needs some extra love and care.

Fantastic experience: I mostly do water classes. The instructors are kind and helpful. The workouts provide cardio and resistance. And when I finish the class, I enjoy the hot tub and sauna.

Fantastic experience: Great place. Friendly and clean. Variety of fitness oriented people excepted; power lifters, bodybuilders, weight watchers etc. professional equipment. Can be a little tough to attempt any kind of super sets or have access to any particular equipment during busy hours but overall had a great experience here an hour a day, five days a week this past year. Hate to leave this gym but my wife and I moved.

Facility is well equipped, clean and pleasant to be in. Can’t say anything about classes because I have no experience with them here, but others seem to really enjoy them.

Fantastic experience: The Black Mountain YMCA not only has the most beautiful facilities in WNC, but the kindest and most compassionate staff. Never have I felt so welcomed. Being wheelchair-bound, gyms and pools often come with myriad challenges for me, but the Black Mountain Y is wonderfully accessible. Staff and members alike consistently offer me help while respecting my independence, which I deeply appreciate. The joy and camaraderie I have found at the Black Mountain Y is unlike anything I've experienced before. It truly is a special place.

Fantastic experience: Had family reunion there for fourth time. We have always had good experiences there. Used same lodge each time. The only problem is that walkway to pool and other areas are not handicap friendly.

Fantastic experience: On the smaller side, but the staff is very friendly and the facilities are clean. There was no room in the free weights area each time I went as it’s small and only a few people can fit at a time. The sauna was nice to sit in after a workout!

Fantastic experience: Since mine and my wife’s move to Black Mountain we love the community, people and we enjoy getting up bright and early to go to our neighbor Y. We had one incident where a young woman was extremely mean, vulgar and made pointless accusations towards one of our new friends there. He’s been going there for years and never bothers anyone. He just works out and gets his exercise in. That woman made an entire gym room as uncomfortable as I think she was trying to. If encounter anything like that again I may consider Golds. We chose the Y because we didn’t want the egos and all the other things a corporate gym offer. We wanted to keep our money in our community and workout with new friends. I do hope that never happens again so we can continue our time with the YMCA. The folks there are exactly why we enjoy waking up at 5:30 am every morning to see them smiling and I’m positive moods. It sets the tone for my day.

Negative experience: Yeah I was a visiting bus driver dropped off a group of kids out of Florida at the Black mountain YMCA camp called about getting three workouts for the week and they said it was $15 a day I pay $25 a month back home so that would be $45 for three workouts I think it's a rip off.

Fantastic experience: I love the Black Mountain Y! There is such a nice variety of classes and programs and it is easy to find many ways to improve your fitness. The equipment is well maintained. The best part to me are the staff members doing their job so well, and all the ways the Y creates a sense of community for the members. We are so fortunate to have the Y here in Black Mountain.

Positive experience: Came back after 2 years of non membership just to check out the pool, that wasn’t open. Who closes a pool at noon on a Saturday? Rates are high and a lot of activities for kids were cut. Not worth it to me. Staff was friendly though and the place was clean…

Fantastic experience: I'm so grateful for the Y. I use it often and always look forward to coming to work out and talk with other members. I have a suggestion however. I hope you will consider letting members use a towel and spray bottle, like the ones the employees use, to wipe down our equipment, rather than the disposable- but not biodegradeable-wipes we are using at present. Of course it's better for the environment, but I think it would also be more cost effective for the organization.Thank you,Laura Berry

Fantastic experience: A wonderful place to get healthy and meet new people. And now open on Sundays! Yayyy! This Y is just the right size for me, with a good mix of older folks like me and younger ones from the nearby schools/colleges, and then those in between. And they keep it clean too and are always ready to help out with any questions I might have.
