Downtown YMCA: Opinions
Fantastic experience: The Downtown YMCA was extremely accommodating to me during my trip. The front office staff were friendly, welcoming, and answered all my questions. All the workout equipment met my needs. Thank you BHM Downtown Y for excellent service for out-of-town guests!
Positive experience: Are there ever going to be any water aerobic classes in the evenings?
Tina, we are in the process of adding additional classes as instructors are available. Our new program director is in the interview process with some potential instructors. We are glad to know that you would be ready to attend!
Positive experience: Love the downtown branch.Take one visit and you will completely understand. I stop my membership because of Covid.Spent the majority of my membership at the Midfield branch before it closed. My afternoons became very busy.I could only go to the gym on Saturday morning at the downtown branch. The other locations are open on Saturday but like I said "love the downtown branch".This location is just outstanding but it's been close on Saturday since Covid.I'll keep checking back from time to time, to see if anything changes.
Negative experience: Kind of shocked it’s legal for a gym to have these hours. Taking out absolute prime times.
Hello Benjamin, You are correct that our Downtown branch operating hours do not mirror those of our other more suburban branches. This is directly related to the impact of COVID and its impact on staffing, downtown member traffic and other operating variables. Our current operating hours are as follows: Current: Monday–Friday 6:00am – 7:00pm | Saturday/Sunday Closed .
Negative experience: The hours of this location are a joke- I mean a siesta would “SERVE” the members better…5am-10am and 4pm to 9pm. It’s sad I’m literally 5min from this location, yet have to venture into Homewood/Mountain Brook cause of these ridiculous hours. With the amount of growth in the Birmingham’s city center there is no reason “good enough” to explain why hours at this location aren’t 5am-9pm.
Hello Brandford, You are correct that our Downtown branch operating hours do not mirror those of our other more suburban branches. This is directly related to the impact of COVID and its impact on staffing, downtown member traffic and other operating variables. Our current operating hours are as follows: Current: Monday–Friday 11:00am – 7:00pm | Effective Monday April 4th, 2022 Monday–Friday 6:00am – 7:00pm Saturday/Sunday Closed
Negative experience: Closed on weekends. Come on Ymca! Just sitting empty is a waste.
Susan, Thank you for reaching out to us concerning the Downtown YMCA. As with most downtown business, the YMCA is still coming back during this new normal and regaining our strength after COVID changed the dynamics of our membership and usage patterns, most significantly at our downtown location. We will begin opening at 6am during the week beginning April 4th and as our members return to us, you will see other continued additions to our services. We look forward to growing again as the downtown community returns with us.
Negative experience: when they will return to normal hours all the gym are already working in normal hours except this
Fantastic experience: Hi I was wondering since the pandimic is happening is there a way to cancel my membership online?? I'd rather not get charged 50 dollars is I can't make use of the facilities.
Negative experience: Why won't you sell day passes? Are you allergic to commerce?
Hi EJ,
Thank you for contacting the Downtown YMCA. We are a member serving organization. We pride ourselves on providing the best service to our members and their health goals. We would love for you to join that group of individuals by becoming a YMCA member!!
Please give us a call to further discuss your membership options at 205-324-4563.
Positive experience: A couple of staff have the worst attitude. Just mean for no reason.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. As a long time member, we know you value the YMCA and your community. Member service and satisfaction is something we take very seriously, and we are disheartened to hear that we have not met your expectations. A member of our management team will be reaching out to you directly. If you are open to sharing a bit more about your experience, in an effort to help us improve, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to "wow" you and make it right!
Negative experience: Well- trying to get a day pass - just passing through town - and I was told NO- what is wrong with these people- they do not want neither my money nor my presence in their place- Shame on you YMCA!!!! Close down the place if you are so discriminatory in who gets in your place and for how long
Hi Leo,
Sorry about the inconvenience when you visited the Downtown branch. There may have been some confusion on our passes. The YMCA of Greater Birmingham does not have day passes for sale or distribution. However, if you are interested in membership our Membership Director would be more than happy to supply you with a couple of guest passes and further information on joining. Feel free to give us a call at 205-801-7233.
Negative experience: This place has some of the worst hours of any gym I've ever been to. It seems like if the wind blows the wrong way they close. I literally can't even keep track of how many times I've showed up only to be locked out because they're closed for whatever reason. Even days that follow their normal business hours are hard to deal with for anyone who works anything other than exactly 9-5. And what kind of gym is closed for 90% of the weekend?! Every time they screw up one of my workout days be being closed mid week I can't sleep in on Saturday because I have to shoot for the handful of hours they're actually open on the weekend. Downtown residential is blowing up. If they don't stop purely catering to people who commute into birmingham for work they're going get destroyed by the first gym to offer good hours.
Hi Brandon. We are sorry to hear that our hours of operation does not match your schedule. However, I would like to mention the wonderful city-wide membership you have. The Downtown Y is within 4 miles of multiple YMCA locations that are open on Sundays. If you have not already, please download our app. On the app has all the hours of operations for all our branches. Hope that helps you plan your visit to the Y more helpful.
Positive experience: Amazing!!!!!
Quindarius, thank you for your feedback! We appreciate it!
Fantastic experience: It's great I went and played basketball with my family it is very fun
TJ, Thanks for sharing! We are so thrilled to hear you are enjoying the Y! Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experience better.
Fantastic experience: Ive been going here everday since school ended to improve my basketball skills and have met a lot of people who have helped me! Great facility and people!

Fantastic experience: Renewed my subscription. Just so much to do at this facility. Work out with out it being a work out.Reminded me of a time when my brother ,who has passed, received his badges for certain amount of laps in the pool.25,50,75,100. This was in Pensacola, funny thing was he was 6'8" 400 lbs. Looked like a whale swimming. Lol Supprised he didn't sink, he swam so slow. But he had plenty of badges, he inspired me to go then, as he has inspired me to go this time. He is missed.
