Greystone YMCA

Fantastic experience: It’s a Y. Facilities are getting old. But well maintained and in good condition. Staff is friendly and courteous. Prices are reasonable. What more is there. ‍♂️

Negative experience: The facilities are nice and there is good equipment but the people that go to workout there and the people that work there are not accommodating or friendly in the slightest. I had been working out there for 2 months when this elder man got mad at me for using a machine the normal way I would use one at any other gym (I was going 3 sets with reps and taking 15-20 second breaks in between). He was being extremely rude when I had done nothing wrong to him, and he went and complained to the staff. The staff members proceeded to embarrass and lecture me and told me to use e bands and and that I wasn’t allowed to work out in that area with out one (which I was never told when I joined the YMCA and I had been working out there for about 2 months there and no one had complained and had any problems before). This really tainted my view of the establishment, and after my membership ends this summer, I don’t think I’ll ever get a membership at the YMCA again. Overall, I think the staff needed to have done a better job on informing new people about the rules of the gym, and learn to treat all their members with respect.

Fantastic experience: Ive been a member of YMCA from Texas to Tennessee. When I was. kid I took every level of swimming lessons. As a college kid I worked in the afterschool program to supplement my education. When I was training for the Ironman Triathlon, I spent many rainy days in the cardio section. All that to say, I know a well managed YMCA when I see one. Greystone YMCA is outstanding. The equipment is up to date and clean. The pool is safe and fun with friendly life guards. When I had to have knee surgery and did not check in to the Y for a few weeks, coach Ruby called to check on me. That phone call really encouraged me during my rehab. Greystone YMCA is the best location I have ever been a member. If you are considering a membership , I say go for it! You will feel better even if all you ever do is go in and walk the indoor track. Who knows, you might get motivated to join an activity class or play tennis or basketball. This could be your year to get healthy. I hope this review conveys my positive endorsement. Givon Wayne

Fantastic experience: The Aquatics Director, Ms. Claire and Head Lifeguard Mr. Tim were incredibly supportive and responsive helping obtain certification for a family member. Great staff and excellent facility! Thank you, Greystone YMCA!

Fantastic experience: Our family has been going to the YMCA for several years now and cannot be happier with the facility at Greystone. You are welcomed at the front doors with a smile and a “how are you today”, then when we leave we receive “have a nice day, thank you for coming” with a smile as well. The facilities are always clean, up to date, and we also enjoy the classes that they offer as well. Our children have also gone through their swimming lessons and now we can’t get them out of the pool half the time! Speaking of the pool, every summer we enjoy swimming to get out of the heat of Birmingham! The lifeguards are so friendly, well trained, attentive and professional. I’ll have to admit my son and I have broken a couple of rules, so I certainly know they are paying attention! They greet you with a smile and on some days they even offer ice pops! We feel safe knowing that they are well trained and only have our best interest in mind. So lifeguards, we appreciate you and your dedication to my families safety, as well as all of the patrons.

Fantastic experience: Love this place! The pool is my favorite part..any time of day or evening. Always a wonderful swim! Courteous and professional staff. The aquatics dept has something for literally everyone. Last, I have to mention the view..the open sky is spectacular. They do put a bubble over the pool when the weather cools off so we can still keep swimming all year round. Well worth trekking 280 for!!

Positive experience: Well-maintained facilities and equipment with friendly staff. Only knock we ever had against this YMCA location was inconsistency with schedule communication between app, website, and posted schedules for the pool. Other than that, we had a great experience during our time at the Greystone YMCA. Update: We are no longer Greystone YMCA members; but, we do recommend them if you are looking for a quality gym with a variety of fitness activities in this area.

Negative experience: It's clean. Can't say much for the staff though. Was waiting on my friend to get done working out. They basically told me they thought i was lying and needed to leave. Keep in mind id only been waiting for about 10 minutes. I've never felt so uncomfortable or so unwelcome. I was thinking about getting a membership but there is not a chance id be a member anywhere that treated people like that.

Fantastic experience: Love the environment and feel safe leaving the kids in playroom The staff is constantly cleaning and sanitizing-the facility.

Positive experience: They recently updated the men's and women's locker rooms, however they are carpeted. The carpet smells pretty bad already from being constantly wet. Also their weight room is probably the worst out of all the Birmingham YMCAs. Staff is always courteous and friendly.

Fantastic experience: I love the Greystone YMCA! It is very clean and the locker rooms are very well kept and smell fantastic! It's not like a sweaty locker room! I have been a member of the YMCA for a very long time now and have been to many of their locations including Alabaster, Pelham, Trussville, Shades Valley, Tuscaloosa, and the Trussville location. I have found that although this location of the YMCA doesn't have an indoor pool, the covered one suits just fine for me. The Pelham location and the Birmingham location downtown are by far the largest. This is the closest one to where I currently live, so I find it very convenient and very clean. I love the fact that this location has tennis courts! No other location that I mentioned have tennis courts except the Shades Valley one (I think). I am very excited to find a group ex class for yoga and pilates! I am very very pleased with the hours and the convenience.

Negative experience: Young people who work desk are only concerned with their smart phone. Bathrooms are nasty need repairs, need to replace rusty elements. Regular schedules are not kept.

Negative experience: I really want to like the Greystone branch, but I have several issues. 1) the locker rooms (I can only comment on men's) are gross and outdated. 2) the pool isn't child/family friendly (only a lap pool and nothing fun about it like Homewood's or Pelham's). 3) The cardio room always smells awful. I think this branch really needs an overhaul/updating! I do like it for all the family programs though.

Fantastic experience: I left another gym in the Birmingham area not related to the YMCA. I came back to this Y due to the Community Atmosphere, The leader Mr. Leonard Speed and His excellent/superior staff, community feeling and it is always clean. Blessings on their efforts.

Fantastic experience: Great facility, wonderful and welcoming staff. Make sure to stop by the pool! It's warm during the winter and beautiful during the summers!

Fantastic experience: The excellent executive director, Leonard Speed, has breathed fresh air into this site. He has dramatically increased the warmth and professionalism of the facility. He should be commended for its dramatic growth and overall improvement of its functioning.

Fantastic experience: Love the Y! Staff is friendly, they just did updates, equipment is rarely ever broken (even then, not for long), it's very clean, and there's a massive parking lot. The staff takes any claims of guys taking photos or being inappropriate very seriously. There are multiple TVs if you want to keep up with the news. Most of the patrons are pretty nice and considerate. Favorite gym and worth the $40/month!
