High Point Climbing and Fitness - Birmingham: Opinions

Fantastic experience: We took the family today and had a great time. The staff are fantastic! They are super friendly and helpful. The climbing was a lot of fun too. Lots of options and routes (more than our sore forearms could handle). I would highly recommend this gym.
Negative experience: I USUALLY love to climb at High Point, but NOT TODAY. 2 of the 6 solo climbs were for professionals with an easy climb at 5.10 rating. I was able to get to the top, but it wasn’t fun. There was only 1 other solo climb available, and there was a mother and son using that one. 3 were being changed out and unused at the same time. It would have been respectful to have left 1 of those free to climb. I’m only able to climb 2-4 times per month. The assumption of my contract is that there will always be walls that I can climb. High Point Birmingham, you failed me today.
Fantastic experience: hell yeah
Positive experience: Great facility with walls for all levels. Kids enjoyed the afternoon and will be back for additional challenges.
Fantastic experience: High point climbing is the best climbing gym that I’ve been to by far. Their lead & top rope offer challenging routes that are also fun. The bouldering always seems to be exactly what I’m looking for. If you’re looking for a great workout & meeting some fun people (members & staff alike), I highly recommend trying this place out!
Fantastic experience: First timer here and it was great. We took our kids who are 13 and 7 and they had a blast. It wasn’t busy at all, so they got to climb everything they wanted to. I was worried our 7 yr old girl wouldn’t be able to climb but they have a lot of options for the little ones in the kid zone. She didn’t have any issues. The employees working were super helpful and made sure we didn’t have any questions. We will definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Love this gym. Friendly staff, quality walls, great size. There were more auto belays than I expected. The kids section is awesome. I went on a ladies night and a day pass was half off. Every climb I did was fun
Positive experience: great climbing gym. only downside is not enough slab climbing. great everywhere else though.
Fantastic experience: Amazing customer service especially from Trace at the front desk. He was extremely attentive, kind, and knowledgeable! Great climbing gym! Would highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun. If you get belay certified (witch only takes a few minutes) you and a buddy can use any of the routes. If you are not belay certified, there are only a few walls to climb. I recommend not going when busy. Big room for kids to play in and climb.
Positive experience: Don’t come expecting to use the rappelling tower, while it’s listed on the website it is not open to public use.
Fantastic experience: Highpoint is the most pristine beautiful climbing gym highly recommended. It is run by super friendly highly informed college students that are always down for some monkey business! It is a family friendly gym so not recommended if you want to cuss people out in front of children!
Fantastic experience: This place is amazing! Best gym ever! Katrina at the front desk is a super model! Her hair is so silky and her tan is killer! Devon gives the best belay classes! Don’t listen to any of the negative reviews…all I can say at reading some of the negative reviews is yikes! These people are impossibly wrong! The manager Joey..hair is dope as hell!
Positive experience: Excellent climbing gym for people of all ages. Everything is clean and felt safe. My only qualm is that they don't offer a half day rate or hourly rate. It's expensive for a novice who can only spend an hour climbing before tiring out.
Fantastic experience: Just visiting from out of the country. I was rather surprised by the quality of the gym. Not many people in the early afternoon on Tuesday. Most of the climbers there were also employees. The employees are all very friendly. Great routes in the boulder room. I didn't rope. I'll go back next time I visit Birmingham.
Negative experience: We booked a party for my daughter’s birthday. It was 79 degrees in the private party room and they refused to turn the air down. We asked the staff multiple times and were told no. We asked the person in charge of our party and he said he wasn’t allowed to adjust the thermostat. The icing literally melted off our cupcakes.. It was miserable and we opted to leave an hour early. We’ll never book another party here and wouldn’t recommend anyone else booking one either..
Fantastic experience: I loved it I will be back
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff great place for beginners and experts
Fantastic experience: What a great place! Orientation was very thorough and lots of fun activities. It was little pricey for a drop in but if we lived closer I would consider a membership. I do think it would be a good idea to have a team member in the room watching for safety.
Fantastic experience: We had our child's birthday party here, and they were AMAZING!! Emily and Devon were beyond helpful. They went out of their way to help any way they could. We would HIGHLY recommend this place. We will definitely be back!
Fantastic experience: Best bouldering gym ive been to
Fantastic experience: My wife, 2 kids, and I went here for the first time. I havent climbed in about 11 years. My wife and kids are brand new to this. The staff was extremely nice and helpful when needed. The facility was awesome. The kids area has thi gs that adults can do with thier kids. 5/5 we will go back.
Fantastic experience: This was fun for my son and I. Several beginner climbs and a great kids section.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place!
Fantastic experience: The staff are really friendly and personable. I loved that they had a kid zone which kept the larger areas more open for people trying to get in a good session. The climbs were good and the 60ft walls were awesome. Would definitely recommend.
Fantastic experience: Great place for the kiddos, and adults as well..
Fantastic experience: Had a great time. Me and my son really enjoyed it.
Fantastic experience: Just amazing compared to other facilities out there friendly staff and wonderful price for the amount of stuff there is to do
Fantastic experience: Such a cool place to have in Bham! We thoroughly enjoyed a fun workout!
Fantastic experience: Very fun
Fantastic experience: Sara was awesome at teaching us the basics. My granddaughter climbed for 2 hours and really had fun!
Fantastic experience: We had a great time! Staff were so helpful and the equipment was great! The climbs were fun and challenging ( this was our first time climbing) we will be back to do this again and again! Very reasonably priced and an awesome experience!
Fantastic experience: Great climbing gym. Wish I lived closer to go back all the time. Definitely have to be belay certified (free to get certified with them) in order to make this worth it though as most courses are belay. Staff was great to get my husband and myself certified and quickly. There were lots of kids around but mostly stayed to the kids area. The kids area looked a lot of fun and was cool to have their separate area as to avoid potential injury with all the adults climbing. Bouldering was fun too. Definitely worth trying out.
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience love to climb
Fantastic experience: The staff Chris,Ryan and Dawson made me feel really welcomed Very helpful
Fantastic experience: We took our 6 year old granddaughter who has done a little climbing before. She had a fabulous time and didn’t want to leave after 2 hours. Staff was very helpful in getting us started.
Fantastic experience: I visited yesterday with a coworker, and we were greeted by a friendly employee who granted us an extensive tour of the gym. Despite only watching my coworker climb, my experience was very pleasant. I highly recommend it.
Fantastic experience: The staff was so nice. We had never gone before and they made it super fun and easy. They gave us instructions and a demonstration. Loved it!
Fantastic experience: Always a great place to take my grandchildren! They love every minute! Great way to burn up all that extra energy! Staff is awesome! Always quick to help with anything!
Fantastic experience: My 5 year old had an amazing time. He conqured his fear quickly and enjoyed every minute after!
Fantastic experience: It’s a VERY neat place to spend the day! We will definitely be back!
Fantastic experience: Totally fun it was definitely a workout, I’m looking forward to doing it again
Fantastic experience: Been a long time member here, love this gym! Great for the family, and hard training.
Fantastic experience: Amazing climbing gym! The toproping section was incredible, with great staff, friendly climbers and lots to do. The kiddies area, gym, sauna and bouldering are also fantastic.
Fantastic experience: lots of great climbing options for kids, great staff, and all around well organized and clean. My 6 year old had so much fun we went 2 days in a row.
Positive experience: Kids loved it but it's expensive for a family.
Negative experience: Poor Customer Service. Ugly Interior Design. Bad Lighting. The staff member who checked us in didn't bother to look at us at all while she was talking. The design and color palette of this climbing gym leaves a lot to be desired. It felt like we were stuck in a bad video game from the 80s. The florescent LED lights didn't help either. I'd rather climb outdoors.
Fantastic experience: Our children love this place. It provides a good mix of problem solving, as well as physical activity.
Fantastic experience: My granddaughter climbs here on the team...she loves it.
Fantastic experience: My granddaughter climbs here on the team...she loves it.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym and great staff! It has it all from top rope/ lead climb routes, bouldering, and other facilities. Everything was professional and proper courses were given for belaying. Highly recommend if you're in the area!
Fantastic experience: Best all around gym in Birmingham. Can get a bit crowded during the week, but it's usually not too bad
Fantastic experience: i love climbing here! the staff is so incredibly sweet and super personable! patrick works at the front desk, he’s very personable and knows what he’s talking about when it comes to climbing! 10/10 recommend climbing at high point and getting to know the staff.
Negative experience: This place smells and looks filthy. Some holds are white with chalk, and you can't tell what route they belong to. They have also just upped their prices with no noticable improvements in over a year. Tons of children, and it gets very crowded. NOT WORTH THE MONEY! Just go to Birmingham boulders. In the past, one of the managers was rude to my family because they didn't respond fast enough when she asked how she could help. Overheard her talking to her coworker about us and how she was frustrated.
Fantastic experience: Me and my kids definitely enjoyed our adventure here!! Great staff, very helpful and plenty of things for everyone to enjoy!! We will definitely visit again!!
Fantastic experience: My kids love climbing, so when we moved to Birmingham, High Point was one of our first stops. They have an absolute blast every time they go. The staff is amazingly kind and helpful. The facility is top-notch. High Point has become a regular stop for our family!
Fantastic experience: Outstanding facility!
Fantastic experience: My husband and I took our 2 boys, 7 & 8, for the first time yesterday. We all had a blast! Everybody working was super friendly and super helpful. My kids had the time of their lives, and me and the Mr enjoyed ourselves quite a bit also! Only down side is that man, my arms are sore today!! Would definitely recommend for some good family fun!! I’m also totally looking into their summer camp options for next summer!!
Fantastic experience: We love taking our 8 year old to High Point for the day. He has become quite the climbing enthusiast! High Point has made it possible for him to work his way up from beginner to advanced climbs!
Positive experience: Pricey, but over all good gym.
Fantastic experience: Love this place for our annual boy scout climbing lock-in! Staff was great. The kids love going here!
Fantastic experience: Excellent problems and a high top rope/lead routes. Not the biggest facility, but the best in the area.
Fantastic experience: Great walls! Will definitely come again.
Fantastic experience: Logan, Kyle, and Dano were great hosts.
Fantastic experience: Great walls! Will definitely come again.
Fantastic experience: Great variety of climbing options for all ages
Fantastic experience: big rock good climb
Fantastic experience: The staff was super friendly. We were thankful for the allowed medical exemption to not have to wear masks that is posted on their front door. So glad that companies like Highpoint understand health concerns for athletes!
Fantastic experience: Awesome climbing. Staff is super helpful and always willing to give advice too
Fantastic experience: Always a great time. Climbing walls are clean and changed weekly. Check out their exercise classes too!
Fantastic experience: My daughter said this place was her 3 most favorite Birthday parties. And it wasn't even her parties. So, I think we will be having her party in the very near future. ASLO this place is great for experienced climbers as well. Can you get to the top of this 55 foot cliffhanger?
Fantastic experience: High Point is the best climbing gym in Birmingham. Their facility is world class and they have everything you could ever want as a beginner, or an advanced climber. Moon board, boulder, ropes, lead climbing, a full gym, spray wall, hang boards, and campus board. They have it all! This gym is a wonderful place and is set up well for kids, climbers, and people who just want to have a fun afternoon trying something new. I cannot recommend this facility enough. If you spend any time traveling around south east, they also have locations all over which you can climb at if you have a membership.
Fantastic experience: Awesome climbing routes and friendly staff! So thankful for this place!
Fantastic experience: Great time at a Birthday party today!! Super knowledgeable and helpful staff!
Fantastic experience: righteous , kinda wish the tall room had less ropes though
Fantastic experience: Fun. Professional and friendly staff. Awesome climbing.of multiple skill levels.
Fantastic experience: Kids loved it
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym in Birmingham. Amazing top and lead roping. Great boulder room. The route setting is phenomenal
Positive experience: Clean facility with a decent amount of top rope stations and high walls. I love that there are separate bouldering and kids areas so that everyone has their space and climbs safe. My only complaint is how the top ropes are set up. Some of them are very difficult or even impossible to take slack out of as the climber ascends and difficult to lower the climber when finished. We gave up on a few routes because it was just too much work trying to belay. My workout should come from the climb not belaying my partner.
Fantastic experience: Stopped in to see your place and Riley at the front desk was amazing. Very friendly and personable. Just moved from Illinois and he made me feel welcomed. You don't find this kind of customer service where I'm from. Thanks again Riley.
Fantastic experience: Great place. Knowledgeable staff with an emphasis on safety, especially for kids. Two thumbs up.
Fantastic experience: Very very friendly staff. They make new routes just about every two weeks and the atmosphere here among all the members is incredible.
Hey Mark!
Thanks for your great review!
Looking forward to seeing you back in the gym soon!
Fantastic experience: I’ve been climbing here for a little over a year. The staff are very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The facility is really fun, clean and safe. They set new routes very consistently. I recommend High Point to all of my friends.
Fantastic experience: Fun fun place to get a workout
Negative experience: Need to pay attention to the fine print. I signed My son and was told I can freeze at any point and even called the facility to get help on how to freeze account. I was considering freeze or cancel. If I known they still charged a fee to hold the membership I would have cancelled. Went ahead and cancelled it right away. Poor service and not full disclosure when presenting options like freeze
Hi Luis,
I'm so sorry to hear that you felt the terms of your membership were not fully disclosed. It is company policy to review all terms of the membership agreement, including freezes, accompanied by initials of explanation and acknowledgement from both our staff and new High Point member. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to work with our team to prevent potential miscommunication.
Thank you!

Fantastic experience: Love this place friendly staff and great walls
Fantastic experience: Great gym and fair price. I live out of town but still go four to five times a year. I just wish Auburn was big enough to have one here.
Fantastic experience: So much fun! We spent most of our time in the kids area, which is a lot of fun for adults too.
Fantastic experience: Never knew this place existed. Great place for beginners and expert climbers alike. Has weight room, auto belay walls. Walls that require someone to belay and free climb walls. Plus great tumbling area. And really fun kid zone. Definitely a place to go. And great way to get in shape.
Thanks for the excellent review, Daniel! We'll see you again soon.
Positive experience: A really great climbing gym overall, but with a few faults. The first thing was that the website needs to be better formatted, especially the classes section of it. The second thing is you have to be 14 to go into the bouldering area. I love bouldering, but I couldn't go in room and only had the small wall in the kids room. The third thing is that when I called, I ended up spending over an hour on the phone with multiple workers who provided contradictory information from each other. Eventually, I talked to Logan, and I figured out what I needed to know and ended up coming with a group and on autobelays. The kids area is great. The skyscrapers are fun, and all of the small games on the wall are great. I spent a couple of hours on the timed wall, and after some great tips from some of the staff, I got my time down to 5.09 seconds. The main room was one of the best climbing area I have ever seen. The ratings on the walls helped me know what ratings I could climb outdoors. It was one of the greatest climbing experiences.
Positive experience: High Point is one of three rock climbing gym and the only top rope gym in Birmingham, which is why it is so sad that their systems pose a safety risk for kids. The biggest thing that bothers me about this gym is their use of tightened adult harnesses on children. Kids have a higher center of gravity and most kids under five/under 80 lbs should be in full body harnesses so they don’t flip upside down. I’ve seen so many small children in adult harnesses with the extra material flapping around or tucked in. Every other gym I’ve been to has appropriately sized full body harnesses to rent out for the kids. Come on High Point! As all the posters say, climbing is inherently dangerous. This means that you should take every precaution to mitigate the risk. Otherwise, the top rope setting is decent but there can be a wide variation in grades that can get frustrating when trying to train using a pyramid approach. The bouldering setting is a strength workout. I don’t find many of the boulder problems fun to do and there aren’t many if any technique focused problems at any point; they’re all big move and pull yourself up the wall strength problems. This doesn’t bother me much, though, because I’m not a big boulderer.
Hi Jennie,
Thanks for sharing your feedback!
We are always looking for ways to improve the experiences of our members and guests, so we take feedback like yours very serious!
Of course, our top priority is the safety of those who enter into all of our facilities, so when we hear about concern of our own practices, we definitely pay attention. We always have full body harnesses available to rent at all of our facilities and we instruct our staff to supply them whenever needed. However, we provide gear on the basis of best fit and function. Many full body harnesses designed for children (including those that we keep on hand) have a maximum weight rating of 80-88lbs. Obviously in an industry where reducing risk is paramount, we tend to operate under all of our gear's maximum ratings. This means that the full body harnesses are often only distributed to our youngest of guests.
As for everyone else, you will notice that the majority of our rental harnesses are not youth or adult sport harnesses, but instead speed harnesses. These speed harnesses offer a more universal design and are great for providing the appropriate fit for a wide array of climbers. The drawback of this design is that there can be quite a lot of slack in the tag end of the webbing. While this can be a bit annoying, it does not affect the function of the harness.
In regards to the setting in our facility, we understand that much of climbing can be subjective, but our routesetters do their best to listen to the feedback of the community and craft routes and boulders to accommodate the needs of as many guests as possible. We always encourage climbers to talk to our routesetters or leave comments in our comment box if they would like to see a change in the routes being put up.
If you have any other feedback you would like to share,
recommendations on how we can improve, or you just want to talk about climbing, please don't hesitate to reach out! We are always happy to chat!
Thanks again!

High Point Climbing and Fitness
Negative experience: It's a decent gym but completely overrun with children in every area, even though they have a specific area just for kids. The men's sauna did not get hot when I tried to use it, probably because it's a giant tile room...
Fantastic experience: So much freaking fun. Great for kids, too.
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome!!!
Fantastic experience: Great place for learning to sport climb also has bouldering, and an awesome kids area.
Negative experience: Was excited to see a climbing gym of this caliber in the south, but that excitement quickly faded. After filling out the waiver and paying for the day passes for myself and my brother who was new to climbing, we had to sit and wait 15 minutes just to get an orientation from the understaffed front desk which had 3 staff members that were overly split between the register, handing out rental equipment, running the store, and doing orientations. We were sad to find out at the end of the tour that half of the bouldering area was closed that day for setting (a piece of information that would've been great to hear before paying), so we headed to the rope room to try out the autobelays before showing my brother how to throw on a quick figure 8 and take the top-rope certification. After getting my brother on one autobelay and having him jump test it, I let him loose and proceeded to the next autobelay down the wall to warm up on a 5.7. After clipping in and giving the autobelay a quick try myself, I began climbing. Cruising up, I reached about halfway up the wall and heard a click and a low humming noise. I looked up to my dismay to see the autobelay steadily cranking out slack as I hang halfway up the wall with nothing but my hands and wit holding me to the wall. Quickly realizing what was happening, I called out to the other climbers in the room to grab a staff member or at least to find someone who knows what to do as I began to downclimb and attempt to keep my cool. To my relief, another climber hopped on the autobelay next to me, climbed up to me, and quickly offered the the safety extension of that rig for me to clip into. We then both lowered off the neighboring autobelay. Now, I'm sure this is partly a testament to autobelays in general, but the fact remains that if any of the many kids hopping on the other belays--or heck even my brother who had to trust the autobelay he was on as all this went down -- if any of them had been in my place, this could've gone differently. For that I was thankful, what I wasn't thankful for was the all-but-absent staff who had no awareness of the incident and had hardly a word to say following the incident. Between faulty equipment, poor service that just made you feel like something was 'off' about the place, and then half of the bouldering room being closed off, it's safe to say that I feel ripped off and that I won't be coming back.
Fantastic experience: Sooo happy to have this in Birmingham Inverness area! Brother is on the youth climbing team and the staff is great!
Positive experience: Beware draconian belay certification rules. It was my first time here. It's bee a while. Me: "I'd like to get checked out to belay, but I need a few minutes to review", Gym: "No, you have to do it when you first get here. We don't want you to review then come take the test." My girlfriend needed some pointers from me. Gym: "No, you can't talk before the test because that would consititute instruction. And only our instructors can teach" Me: ok, can we go outside and talk about belay before we take the test" Aside from all of that: it was a nice climbing gym. ~6 auto belay top ropes. A good kids climbing area with auto belay.
Fantastic experience: Awesome and a fun date! Also, with friends
Thank you for a great review, Antonio! We look forward to you all climbing with us again soon.
Fantastic experience: I love this place! Awesome place and great staff!!
