Our comment from FitFit United States about Bend Rock Gym:
Bend Rock Gym, located in Bend, United States, is widely recognized as one of the best climbing gyms in the area, offering an impressive selection of climbing routes and a vibrant atmosphere for all ages. Users have praised the gym for its:
- Variety of Climbing Options: With numerous top rope and bouldering routes available, the gym caters to climbers of all skill levels, making it a popular destination for families, beginners, and seasoned climbers alike.
- Friendly and Supportive Staff: Many visitors have consistently highlighted the helpful and approachable staff, who are dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.
- State-of-the-Art Facilities: The gym is well-equipped with an extensive range of climbing walls, training areas, and amenities, including workout equipment and designated parking.
- Community Atmosphere: The welcoming environment has made it a favored spot for climbers to connect, learn, and challenge themselves, fostering a sense of community within the climbing culture.
However, some users have noted a few areas for improvement:
- Inconsistencies in grading, particularly among routes classified as 5.11, which some climbers felt were graded too softly.
- A desire for more innovative and technical routes, especially for intermediate climbers eager for a greater challenge.
- Concerns regarding crowding during peak times and the balance of facilities available for children versus adults.
Despite these points, the overall feedback remains overwhelmingly positive, with many climbers expressing their love for Bend Rock Gym and their eagerness to return. Whether you're a novice or an experienced climber, this gym offers a thrilling and supportive environment for your climbing journey.
Bend Rock Gym: Opinions

Fantastic experience: It was really cool the first time. I did. I kind of had a little slippery fall. But that wasn't all
Positive experience: Really cool climbing gym but extremely soft grading for TR. We climbed here while visiting from NY and were seriously impressed with the size of this gym. Unfortunately there was a large discrepancy in the 5.11 grading. One white 5.11 on the back wall climbed like a 5.8-5.9 warm up, and another yellow 5.11 climbed like a 5.10a or b, another red 5.11 climbed like a 5.10 as well. These weren’t just the only ones, there was a shocking amount of easy/non-technical 5.11s. Looking past grades, the creativity when route setting is lost in some aspects. Most climbs did not require technical climbing knowledge or skill, for the *majority* of these climbs the only move was to simply reach up. Perhaps my local gym has us spoiled in this regard. I’m use to projecting all 5.11s in my gym. These 5.11s require you to become a contortionist with a great deal of balance. You need to plan your moves, precision, dead points, dynos, compression, flexibility & finger strength (it’s RARE you see any jugs on a 5.11 climb). The difficulty did increase with the 5.12s -so perhaps those are the climbs that are more technical here? Not sure. For me, half the fun of an intermediate climb set well is the very specific sequence, body movement with body tension required in order to send the climb. I expected a gym being so close to an outdoor climbing area known to be stiff (similar to the Gunks) to have a more rigid grading structure. The 5.11s here were fun to climb but it was a shame that they didn’t feel like a choreographed dance on the wall. It’s okay to make climbs more stiff and grade them in how they climb vs the intentional climb. Harder grades humble people and inspire people to push their limits. Anyway, hope this review wasn’t too harsh. Looking forward to taking laps here again.
Fantastic experience: Cool place. Designated parking outside with lines, and also an open lot. No overnight parking. They have a lot of stuff inside: kitchen, showers, bathrooms, workout equipment. You have to sign a waiver before climbing, and they can rent you gear. To do Top Rope or Lead, you have to do a test and get a card for certification. Kind staff and fun atmosphere. The staff let me cut my pineapple up in the kitchen.
Fantastic experience: Incredible experience! First time going rock climbing, and I'll definitely be back. Friendly staff, great selection of walls to climb, and a nice variety of difficulty. Definitely recommend!
Negative experience: Came here with my 4 year old son only to climb for 20 minutes as there is no real bouldering section for kids. Wouldn’t recommend as the price point is $25 for a pass.
Fantastic experience: Best rock gym in Bend. All the options! Good vibe!
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere. The staff was friendly. Routes were great. Equipment seemed to be in safe and working order.
Fantastic experience: Love BRG!!
Fantastic experience: Only top rope gym. Very big and lots of options for climbs. Also the up update there routes constantly.
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome! We have been as a family multiple times. The small kids love the auto belay, no class is required to use them. They are never crowded and the staff is friendly.
Fantastic experience: Haven’t been here in a while but traveling full time stopping at gyms here and there has made me appreciate my 2 months at this gym! Truly not much compares to the diversity of grades and interesting route setting ! Also the staff is wonderful special shoutout to Toren for the great lessons I got last year!!! Been putting it all into practice and will be leading outside soon!
Fantastic experience: Went to Bend Rock Gym for the first time today. This place is amazing! I took my 9 year old and he absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and helpful, teaching us how to use the equipment. We will definitely be going back!
Fantastic experience: Great indoor climbing gym with professional and friendly stuff. The routes are well thought out Special tanks for coach Amanda and Tim
Fantastic experience: I love this gym. Anytime I climb on ropes here I feel like a kid in the best way. The setting is just fantastic.
Fantastic experience: Great spot for indoor climbing and fitness, good for kids too.
Fantastic experience: Be prepared to be invigorated! The wide variety of styles and difficulties, along with the attentiveness and creative thinking that goes into each route have challenged my stale way of climbing and improved my abilities waaaay beyond where they were just a few months ago. I can now climb so many more types of problems and have learned a ton of new moves. You can tell that all of the route setters put a ton of effort into making every route fresh and exciting. Even the easiest routes don’t default to “ladder mode” so that beginners can be inspired about how their bodies can move and find the sense of accomplishment that comes with figuring out a route.
Negative experience: Not for beginners! The three main setters for the “easy” routes—Nate, Eva, and Cameron—seem more preoccupied with out-teching each other rather than creating fun routes with good flow. It used to be a fun place to climb, but now these new setters don’t care about a beginner experience.
Positive experience: Awesome place to climb at but mediocre customer service.
Positive experience: I really like this gym. The top roping is great and the bouldering area has a good assortment of routes. I really like going to the West gym when it's busier in the main gym.
Fantastic experience: Great place to hang out with kids and grandkids. Climbing is fun and good exercise!!
Fantastic experience: Can you come here alone?
Fantastic experience: Routes are fun, kid friendly spots and a lot of space for adults. I like that they separate it pretty well. Very friendly staff and I like the people who climb there. Definitely will stop in any time I am in Bend
Fantastic experience: The gym was amazing! The staff was friendly and the walls were good for all levels. My only complaint is that most of the tall walls were manual belays which you have to get a certificate for and pass a test, but I wasn’t staying in the area long so I couldn’t get it. But the auto belays were still enjoyable and challenging. The bathrooms were clean, and the atmosphere was energizing. Bouldering was really fun too! Highly recommend
Fantastic experience: I love this place! Good atmosphere, not too busy, epic! It’s a great place to go rock climbing! There’s a huge variety of courses and plenty of auto belays ranging from beginner expert! Overall a great experience! Of course, don’t come if you have a very bad fear of heights!
Fantastic experience: Awesome place for rope climbing and bouldering!
Positive experience: Was visiting the area for the week and got to climb at this gym several times during my stay. Was a lot of fun! I was able to try around 30 different routes on autobelays and around 5 topropes. This gym is significantly softer than my home gym, which I actually really enjoyed because there were way more options for me. Was able to flash all but a few routes I tried, so it was nice to have enough climbs to maintain endurance while I was on vacation. Staff and climbers were friendly and clean facility. Never had to wait on any routes while I was there. I'd go when they open and I didn't have issues with families and kids hogging auto belays. Was a great time!
Fantastic experience: A fun spot for when it's pouring in Smith Rock or you only have a couple of hours to spare. They have ropes and bouldering along with some training boards if you're into that. We came for a drop-in while visiting Bend and enjoyed the bouldering and auto-belays. A quarter of the gym was closed due to route-setting but we didn't have issues finding problems to do. They have everything you could desire -- caves, slab, tall, short, vertical etc. There's also tons of hang out areas so you can chill out if your friends still have some gas in the tank. Wifi is also available. We found the staff really friendly and parking easy in the lot out front.
Fantastic experience: So fun to climb, I went twice a day for a few hours, for a few days and never got bored
Fantastic experience: The best place in Bend, hands down... or up... or sideways.
Fantastic experience: We had lots of fun! It was my first time and I'll definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Great routes, friendly people, AND its clean. They have good workout areas too!
Fantastic experience: When in bend, BRG is probably my favorite indoor place to burn time. There are always tons of amazing routes, with and without Autobelay devices. Staff are super friendly and helpful and I always come here to take a class with them when my climbing partners start to become interested in lead climbing!
Fantastic experience: BRG is the bomb! They have a lot to offer and great route setting. Just avoid the 6-7 PM rush if at all possible, some nights can be pretty packed!
Fantastic experience: Went for the first time yesterday and was pleased with our experience. We’re a family of 5, all brand new to rock climbing, so we just opted for our kids to give it a try - they’re 6, 10 and 14. The staff were all super friendly and very helpful to get our kids up and climbing. They have several options, from areas that require two people (one to belay), to areas that have auto-belays (great for newbies like us as well as folks climbing without a partner), and then they have boulder areas that folks can climb without clipping in, but JFYI it’s for folks 10+ unless you have adult supervision. They also had other little areas for various types of training/endurance, although I’m not sure what the technical terms are. The only info that would have been helpful to have on the website is info about shoe/equipment rental - they do have shoes you can rent for $10 when you are buying a day pass, and they help fit you with the climbing harness. Rookie mistake we made was not buying chalk for the kids to use on their hands, so that’s something to look into as well if you’re new to this and don’t realize it’s needed.
Fantastic experience: Great family place for everyone!!
Positive experience: This was a fun place to visit while visiting Bend. However, I was a little bit disappointed that the west gym is not open to day passers. The bouldering in the south gym is ok, but there wasn't a lot of variety. Definitely found myself wishing there were more interesting/innovative climbs.
Fantastic experience: Great routes set often, state of the art facility, wonderful staff. Can't beat BRG!
Fantastic experience: Everyone has always been friendly and they do a good job of keeping the routes fresh and with a range of difficulty!
Positive experience: Nice amount and variety of roped routes, and a fun bouldering gym. The staff are all perfectly nice and laidback. Facilities feel well taken care of, if not a little old. Came from a gym that was newly renovated, had a massive exercise room, and free fitness classes for the same price as BRG, so I had pretty high expectations. The small workout room and $5/class yoga are slight bummers. Appreciate that they’re always decorating for the holidays, and the Fright Night was an awesome event.
Positive experience: The gym is quite nice and big I enjoy it but what’s up with the hours a making members pay for yoga. It would just be nice if the gym opened even an hour earlier on weekends.
Fantastic experience: This place is rad. Don't hesitate to go check it out.
Fantastic experience: This place rocks! Great place for kids to come and climb out the sillies
Fantastic experience: This place rocks! Great place for kids to come and climb out the sillies
Fantastic experience: What a great gym here in central Oregon. When the weather dies not permit outdoor climbing or if you are training for harder climbs, the Bend Rick Gym is a great place to go. I stopped by for a day pass and had a great time. The grades are reasonable and the settings were challenging without being overly complicated.
Fantastic experience: New routes are updated frequently, and they're building a new tower that will add about 30 new top rope climbs, fun times!
Fantastic experience: They have done a great job with the gym. Good to be back
Fantastic experience: Great gym
Fantastic experience: tons of fun for everyone, lots of routs everywhere and decent pricing.
Fantastic experience: Bend Rock Gym is great. Plenty of bouldering space and autobelays. Their boulder routes are set and graded really well; interesting problems, and the V-scale ratings are comparable to those at gyms like Planet Granite and Boulderdash in larger cities. Whoever their setters are, they're doing good work. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the facility is quite clean. At $20 for a day pass with 15% off for students, the price is reasonable as well. 10/10 would recommend.
Fantastic experience: Bend rock gym is one of the better rock gyms I have ever set foot in very independent in depth facility complete bouldering area 2 lead climbing areas areas and lots of things to do there is a weight lifting area as well and a full on training section of 1 of the bouldering gyms. The staff are very accommodating although this last year has been a struggle for everybody but they keep trying to make it a fun and easy place to visit.
Fantastic experience: Got a day pass here, loved it! Tons of routes.
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome! Great route setting, and amenities to take your climbing to the next level. Definitely the best gym overall I've been to!
Fantastic experience: Appreciate the open environment and considerate service from people at the desk; the routes are great.
Fantastic experience: Great, fun place! They have friendly staff and it is a great workout for your whole body, mostly arms and legs.
Fantastic experience: This gym is awesome. Great setting, staff is rad.
Fantastic experience: Really great gym!
Fantastic experience: Nice climbing gym with everything you need! Chevere gimnasio de escalada con todo lo que necesitas!
Negative experience: updated 2022 review - it really bums me out to see what this gym has become. it used to be a place for community, for learning, for making new friends, and progressing towards a common goal of climbing. feels like all that is gone… litterally had one of the employees yelling me out the door because i didn’t check in. 2019 review - one the best gyms in the northwest. setting is top tier and the place is a vibe.
Fantastic experience: Easily the best place to rockclimb in bend. The facilities are clean and super fun.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing gym especially for kids with friendly staff and a ton of auto-belays.
Fantastic experience: Great staff. Route setting is awesome!
Fantastic experience: I'm a first time climber and went with my sister who goes often. The simplicity is very nice, just sign a waiver, grab some shoes and a harness and you're off to the races. There's a massive amount of walls to climb ranging from kids level to expert, with the expert levels being changed periodically to give experienced climbers new avenues to explore. I stayed on the auto-belay walls that allow you to completely let go at any height and gracefully rappel to the ground. Each wall is marked with a difficulty and a corresponding color to follow up. For example, blue holds show a path going up on one wall while green shows another. Besides the main color holds there are much smaller, harder holds in case you want to challenge yourself on the way up by avoiding the main course and using alternate routes. The whole facility is clean and well kept, with a very friendly staff to help you along the way. I would have loved to stay longer but my arms were giving out...next time I hope to conquer more difficult climbs!
Fantastic experience: A+ plus here on facilitiesAnd friendly staff great program for kids. This place can get packed full of people it is a real asset to the Bender community and a great place for kids and adults to get exercise and learn to climb winter summer anytime. Nothing but great things to say about this place
Fantastic experience: Support Your Local Rock Gym ✌️
Fantastic experience: Love this place. My son is a new climber and it's got everything he needs to advance. The staff is helpful and the place is clean.
Fantastic experience: Rock climbing for everyone, kids and adults. Routes for all skill levels. 2 separate rooms for bouldering and rope climbing. Plenty of people involved in the community who are happy to spot you or show you new techniques. Great classes available and community outing information. One of my favorite places to shed stress and get a work out in.
Fantastic experience: Love this place. My son is a new climber and it's got everything he needs to advance. The staff is helpful and the place is clean.
Fantastic experience: Easily the best place to rockclimb in bend. The facilities are clean and super fun.
Fantastic experience: Love this gym. I live two hours away from Bend, but it's worth the drive. I bring my daughter and son and we all climb the auto belays for a killer work out when we are in town. Now I just need to get us out to Smith Rock!
Fantastic experience: Excellent space with lots of variety to suit the needs of every climber. Comfortable, kid-friendly atmosphere with good rates and great gear. Also tons of development classes + workout space and yoga studio.
Fantastic experience: Amazing facility! It's worth a visit even if you aren't a climber. The walls must be 60 feet high! They seemed very knowledgeable, and the facility is enormous. Fascinating to just wander around and watch adults and children having fun. The newest section (on the left) is particularly impressive.
Fantastic experience: Visited a few cities in the pnw, from Minneapolis, and this was a treat to find. Long walls, nice mix of positive and negative slopes and it must be new because everything is so grippy still. Definitely will be coming back and likely getting a membership after we move.
Fantastic experience: I have been climbing here since 2008 and it is one of the best rock gyms I have been to in my life. They are always improving and trying to become better for their customers. The customer service is awesome and everyone always seems like they are having a great time.
Fantastic experience: Been coming here multiple times a week for 4 years. This quality of climbing gym should not be in a town this small. Amazing place and amazing people.
Fantastic experience: Excellent staff and facility. One of the better gyms I’ve been too. I eavesdropped on some route setters and got the sense they really take their time getting it just right. Great routes, something for all levels. I saw ages ranging from 5 to ~70. They were the particularly great with my boys.
Fantastic experience: BRG is a climbing gym for climbers. Between the ample bouldering, auto-belays, and climbing wall, there is plenty to keep your arms sore and skin raw for weeks on end. They are efficiently run and have a happy and helpful staff. In addition, the yoga and PILATES available make a great complement to anyone's climbing training. There are enough weights about you can get in a non-climbing based workout if you want it. There are also training walls and a cage for your movement and mobility training. It was a privilege to get to be a part of this community for even just a brief period of time.
Fantastic experience: By far the best climbing gym I've been to. They have plenty of great equipment for beginner and advanced climbers to advance faster, including a moon board and great campus section along with a weight room. Really top notch. The service was what really sets this gym apart. John was very helpful, patient and kind, as were all the other staff. They have showers, fyi. Lead climbing, top roping, bouldering, aerobic workout machines and a weight room. Plenty of all of it as well. Worth every penny and minute.
Fantastic experience: This place is great for all skill levels and all ages. Staff is cool and helpful. Once you get inside, you will see how big it is and alll the different climbing routes.
Positive experience: Great gym -- love the setting, friendly people. Seems like the youth programs are thriving, but maybe a little too much.... The only thing I'd change is more "adult swim" time/space. Yikes -- never thought I'd be that person. Maybe we could have two weeknights without kids camps? Or one or two areas to boulder without kiddos during camp time? Not sure what the best solution might be. Keep up the good work! Thanks!
Fantastic experience: This place is great for all skill levels and all ages. Staff is cool and helpful. Once you get inside, you will see how big it is and alll the different climbing routes.
Fantastic experience: Kids live coming here
Negative experience: Gym used to amazing. Management has changed and it's really gone downhill. No longer an inclusive or welcoming space, pride flags and stickers all taken down. no familiar faces at the front desk, unpredictable hours yikes
Fantastic experience: So frigging fun.
Fantastic experience: Super friendly staff that are approachable and go out of their way to help climbers. The facility is top both with tons to do.
Fantastic experience: Good routes, helpful staff. They even have auto belays for beginners.
Fantastic experience: A great gym! I've been to many around the country (and world) and this is definitely one of if not the best. Two huge climbing areas provide lots of variety (for bouldering residually) and are accompanied by a small weight room, yoga room, and training area.
Fantastic experience: Nice staff, looking out for your safety, chided me for not staying in line with the auto belay. Great variety of climbs.
Fantastic experience: I am not a climber but my kids love it here. There is a great beginner area but has something for every level. Very friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: This is a great climbing gym. Lots of options. Boulders, sport routes, lead climbing and even some cracks.
Fantastic experience: First time here. Love it! I have virtually no experience, but it is not intimidating. Staff is awesome. Thank you!!
Fantastic experience: Great facility and wonderful staff
Fantastic experience: Great for kids and adults. Full body workout area and cool people.
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Great team of employees. Really cool spot that's supportive of all talents and abilities!
Fantastic experience: Great spot, tons of climbing! Lots of boulders and plenty to top rope. Lots of auto belays as well. Pricey for a drop in but worth it if passing thru town and it's rainy
Fantastic experience: Wonderful staff, and consistently changing routes. Great place for all skill levels.
Positive experience: Excellent climbing facility. Great equipment. Fun staff. Definitely seems geared for a higher caliber of climber. However, there were enough low level problems to keep this rookie boulderer entertained
Fantastic experience: Rilly cool place I love it
Fantastic experience: Great place, nice and clean. Not too busy
Positive experience: The walls are nice and high, very safe.
Fantastic experience: Great facilites, big walls
