The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA is a vibrant community hub in New York that offers an array of excellent facilities and programs for individuals and families alike. Visitors appreciate the cleanliness, friendly staff, and variety of workout equipment available, including well-maintained cardio and strength training machines. The supportive atmosphere here makes it a great place for fitness enthusiasts of all ages.

Fantastic experience: this Y is nice! clean, lots of machines, nice staff, and equipment kept really up to date.

Fantastic experience: Our family is so appreciative of this community facility. The staff members are always kind, the space is clean, and there is a good variety of programming. In addition to workout equipment, classes with fabulous instructors, we also enjoy the child care services and family activities.

Negative experience: Don't accept silver sneakers program for seniors

Negative experience: Issues have been brought up to managers and other employees, several times, by many people (in person and by email). They say that they are working on them, and stuff keeps breaking down, and hygiene situation at the mens lockeroom hasn't improved. As issues stay unresolved, it is common to see front desk people having a great time chatting. This is supposed to be an organization for the general well-being of members, not a social club for its employees. There are indeed a minority employees that show that they really care, they know who they are.

Fantastic experience: My family and I have been attending the Y for several years now. My kids love the open swim classes and my husband and I love the facilities. The cardio equipment is new and the classes are great. I really enjoy Nicole and Yeddys spin class, they’re exceptional instructors. The women’s locker room is always well maintained by a small women who works tirelessly to keep it meticulously clean and well stocked. She takes her job very seriously and I appreciate her. The childwatch run by Mr Bharat, Nylah and Natalaya is a beloved member feature. I’m so grateful for its enriching program, they go to great lengths to engage the children with seasonal crafts, games and song. I look forward to seeing it expand in the near future.

Negative experience: Gym itself is good and well equipped but canceling your membership is an absolute nightmare. You cannot cancel online, email, phone or on the app. You must go in person which I did all the way back in July. It was a week out from my billing date so I was told they would still charge me for the next one but the following would be stopped because they had a 2 weeks notice policy. I agreed and signed a paper form. In August I was charged! I went back in person to tell them to please refund me the amount and to cancel my membership. Again, they apologised and made me sign another form for the refund. I thought it would be over... It's been 3 months and I'm still being charged, no refund and I have put in a dispute with my credit card company. I will have to go back for a third time now, wasting my time and money. If you're planning to cancel do so well in advance.

Fantastic experience: Clean gym with great staff! Every morning I’m greeted by Lakeisha and her warm smile. Because I know she’s expecting me it makes me accountable- I really need that some mornings. Johnathon and Sonya are very helpful. Johnathon is a new pleasant face and seems very eager to help. I don’t hv much interaction with sonya but she is always pleasant with an encouraging smile. I can’t say enough about the cleaning staff u can almost eat off the floor of the women’s locker room.

Positive experience: This is one of the better Y’s I have been to. The place is clean, has newer machines, and has nice employees. The schedule can be a bit restrictive due to kids camps and other activities taking precedent, but it’s a YMCA not a 24 hour fitness, so that’s expected. All in all I would recommend this Y. The price you pay is worth the service you get.

Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA

Hi Sean, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us! We're thrilled to hear that you find our facility clean and well-equipped, and that our staff has made a positive impression on you. We appreciate your understanding regarding the scheduling and the various activities we host. Your recommendation means a lot to us, and we're glad you feel the value matches the service provided. We look forward to seeing you again soon! Best regards, The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Team

Negative experience: Signed my daughter up for a swim class. No one spoke to us when we came in. I asked which group she should be in and she was told to get a kick board and get in line. No teacher spoke to her the entire class and she left in tears. Won’t be going back.

Negative experience: 3 stars originally because some things are good here and some things are bad. But enough bad things that I switched to 2 stars and will be stopping membership. The good is that there is generally enough equipment for the amount of members here. The equipment covers most general population needs for aerobic and strength training. There is a basketball court and swimming pool. The bad: restrictive hours, restrictions on using the full ymca (court and pool), and faulty water fountains. The hours are fairly restrictive, especially on weekends. If you have a full time job or work on the weekend you probably will struggle to workout here. Also, the water fountains are consistently low pressure and run at a trickle and the filter lights are often yellow or red for weeks at a time. Some of the staff seem to care and most don’t seem to care. Finally, the basketball court and swimming pool are only open to general members at VERY few, specific times of the day — so if you have a full time job you most likely cannot use the YMCA pool or basketball courts — even if no one else is utilizing them when you are there. Overall, good equipment, but restrictive hours and few chances for general members to utilize the basketball court and pool; plus, faulty water fountains that are rarely working or have a green filter light. Edit: The YMCA regularly closes as well, per photo below. Not sure if they post any of this in advance, but it is frustrating to travel to the gym just to find out it is closed unexpectedly.

Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA

Dear Elegant Mr., Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We appreciate your acknowledgment of the quality and availability of our equipment, as well as the variety of facilities we offer, such as the basketball court and swimming pool. We are genuinely sorry to hear about your concerns regarding our operating hours, access to certain facilities, and the condition of our water fountains. Your experience is important to us, and we understand how these issues can impact your ability to fully enjoy your membership. We are continuously working to improve our services and your feedback is invaluable in helping us identify areas that need attention. Regarding the restrictive hours and limited access to the basketball court and pool, we will review our scheduling to see if there are ways to better accommodate our members' needs. Additionally, we will address the issues with the water fountains to ensure they are functioning properly and providing clean, filtered water. We also apologize for any inconvenience caused by unexpected closures. We strive to communicate any changes in our schedule as promptly as possible and will work on improving our notification process to keep our members better informed. Thank you again for your feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you better in the future. Best regards, The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Team

Negative experience: I never write reviews but had to for the Bed Stuy YMCA. I followed their website instructions to cancel my account 8 months ago and despite several calls to the branch and probably 10 emails at this point, they still have not canceled it and the $65 charge shows up on my account every month. It’s infuriating! Save your money and go elsewhere.

Positive experience: I enjoyed coming here to swim. The manager is really great, the schedule app works well. I'm taking a couple stars because ending a membership is a pain and shouldn't be so hard. I called and emailed 10 days before the start of the month, and they didn't respond, and then automatically renewed my membership, saying 10 days didn't give them "enough time" to cancel it.

Fantastic experience: This is a wonderful place. The ymca saved my life. The enviorment became my home away from homeç

Kate Henderson 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: My experience here has been great. The vibe is positive and respectful from both staff and other members. I like that I see people of all ages here, from kids going to day camp to elderly people working out and chilling in the sauna. It’s the cleanest of any lower budget gym I’ve been too. It gets a little crowded in the before and after 9-5 M-F work times, but outside of that I find it to be a low to moderate volume of people. Even when it’s pretty full, I can always find space in the community room, and for machines. The weight room can get a bit more crowded. The women’s locker room is very clean and well attended to. There are always staff walking through and checking the saunas and showers. The wet and dry saunas aren’t huge but roomy enough, very clean and usually the temps are good. Overall for the price and quality of facility I think it’s a great deal if it’s a convenient location for you. I only had to deal with their front desk when I signed up, and I had no issues. They were pretty friendly and welcoming. I guess my only complaint would be that they said you can get a tour if you’re considering membership, but when I tried to set something up they wouldn’t give me a specific time to come. I’ve heard enough good things about this place from neighbors that I just went ahead and got the membership, but that was a little bit annoying. Other than that, I really don’t have anything bad to say about this place. Recommended.

Yaro 2 years ago

Negative experience: The lap swim hours are pretty abysmal. All the other Y locations I’ve been to had way more lap swim hours on weekdays and weekends, but for some reason this one is lacking. Then they’ll close it additional times for maintenance with poor communication.

Keith E. 2 years ago

Negative experience: I hate to down-vote a community organization but dealing with any account-level issue here will likely make you regret joining. It almost seems as if they made things difficult on purpose. Emails went unanswered. Phone calls weren’t picked up or required long hold times and then were ultimately routed to someone who couldn't help or gave inaccurate information. Part of the issue seems to be that throughout the city the Y’s computer systems are antiquated. This causes many basic issues to be levels of difficulty harder than most places would be since the invention of the internet. Even branch to branch communication seems to be a major challenge. But this was compounded with a glaring lack of attention to even basic customer care at Bed Stuy in particular. We had so much time wasted, and the management seemed to think this is normal, not even an apology for the inconvenience. After many attempts and not getting responses or action on basic things (e.g., applying a discount they had already said should apply, or changing to another credit card for payment), we finally gave up and cancelled our membership.

Fantastic experience: they have everything i need (pool, weight machines, good # of treadmills, 2 stair machines). it's relatively clean or clean enough for me thus far. the staff are usually friendly or at worst, neutral. i like the vibe of the locker room, especially when it's filled with small friend groups of middle and older aged women.

Positive experience: The bedstuy-Y is a community gem. The y serves all ages and is not only a fitness center with ample machines and every weight possible but it's a meeting place, a community center, adult day care center, summer day camp and swimming pool center. Yes this place does it all and they do it with a smile on their faces. I am a card carrying never and I want to say I think it's money well spent when you join the Y. The Y has even joined the 21 century with a cool app that reminds you of everything needed to make sure you don't miss hot yoga sessions, training dates and pool open swim times. It also keeps track of the important stuff like steps, exercise routines and healthy options. If your serious about fitness or just want to be around good people now beginning their weight loss journey- this is the right spot. Join today.

Fantastic experience: Ladies and Gentlemen This is my factual life story. I am a woman over 40 years of age. Many years ago i came to the USA from a country where women who practice are not mainly supported for lack of better words. After being through a lot with marriage ,having children and conflict of culture,i realize my health was spiraling.Being reluctant to be a member after months and months of passing by the Y.I finally decided few years ago to be join the Y in order to my family. My life and the life of my kids change ever since. My children and i had become emotionally stronger and physically in better shape. But most importantly we are happy ,joyful fun to be around. Thanks to Bedford YMCA Especial thanks to Tanya, Sonia Tifany, and whoever worked behind the scene to make me be so comfortable in the Y.i may not know your name ,but thank you. Fantastic experience: I love this place for working out and swimming. It's near my apartment and has a swimming pool. It's just like your other typical NYC gyms, offers classes, has equipment, and a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court. There is also an indoor track. Negative experience: This is a fine gym until you need to cancel your membership. Positive experience: Is this the same reason done over YMCA that my Boy Scout Master took my Troop 545 too. To teach us to swim in the pool

Tim Norton 5 years ago

Negative experience: Right off the bat, the upstairs workout rooms are fine. They’re clean, and usually somewhat vacant in the early afternoon when I would go. My wife and I took a salsa class which was fun too. My qualms are with the pool. I am primarily a lap swimmer. The pool maintenance is simply not good enough. I heard from a lifeguard that they had someone on staff who used to balance the chemicals, change the filters and properly maintain the pool. That person left and now the lifeguards are left to scramble with this task. I try to swim 2-3k yards a 4 times a week. The pool water was constantly murky, cloudy and too warm. Whenever I would mention it to the staff, they would shrug. They have many children’s aquatic classes-but rather that being motivation to heighten pool hygiene, the pool grew more dirty. I swam there regularly for about two years. I had a number of ear infections. (and yes I use drops to clean my ears religiously after each swim). The needle that broke the camels back for me was getting a fungal ear infection that lasted weeks. Fool me once, shame on you- give me a never ending ear infection, shame on me. I’d rather commute to a different borough than swim another lap there.

Fantastic experience: This is a first impression review. I utilized this facility to access their indoor pool. I was able to do this using a one day guest pass (accessible from their website). I arrived for the 11am adult lap swim session. The schedule can be found on the website. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and informative. I was directed to the locker rooms downstairs, where the pool is also located. You can use any of the long lockers as long as you have your own lock. In the ladies locker room there are showers, a small sauna, and bathrooms. The area was very clean and modern looking. The pool was great. At the time I arrived, it was not crowded. There was a life guard on duty; he didn't say much but was pleasant. I swam for about an hour. I enjoyed my first time here and will definitely be returning.

Negative experience: This Gym is a Joke! Nothing never works down to the water fountains. An item can stay inoperable for weeks at a time. High cost, poor customer service. Really sad to see a Gym with potentials being run down to the ground, for the overwhelming cost of membership here this establishment should be close to 5 stars

Annette George 6 years ago

Negative experience: Dealing with them is a pain. Their technology is stuck in the 80s. You have to stand on long lines and register for membership in-person. Classes usually can be registered online but sometimes they have technical difficulties forcing you to again stand on long lines and register for classes. If you have kids, forget about summer camp. A lot of the kids that attend are rowdy and many of the counselors are rowdy kids themselves. When you address an issue some do care but many of the counselors or staff are barely attentive to the issues. None of the issues that my daughter brings to light have been brought to my attention by any staff members. You have to pay an additional fee for "extended hours" hours that most working parents are forced to pay (8 am - 9 am) and (4 pm - 5 pm). I will not be sending my daughter here next summer.

Katrina Blackman 6 years ago

Negative experience: My son has been a member at the Bed Stuy YMCA for a little over one year. For the most part, I am pleased with the attention he receives in his scheduled swim classes. During the Spring II session registration, there was a lot of commotion with registering participants. But my gripe is not about the classes. My issue is the SUMMER CAMP. It doesn't matter if you pay full price, early bird special, or receive financial assistance. The inconsistency and lack of nutritious food and snacks is unacceptable. Through their own admittance, it's best if parents send their kids with lunch and snack because the YMCA only offers sandwiches. These children should be receiving hot meals during lunch, not cold sandwiches. The YMCA is a fee for service (to call it nonprofit is a joke) organization. Hot meals should be the standard. Many other camps and public schools offer hot meals. The Y at Bed Stuy should do the same. At the very least, microwaves should be available. The Explorers group meet at the Bedford Academy H.S. right next door; that is a DOE building which means there has to be some sort of partnership or contract to use the facility. The staff are supportive and attentive to the children. I do not use the early drop off/late pick up hours (also a fee) because the children are usually in a room waiting for parents. It's not worth the additional cost, but I understand not all parents have the luxury of waiting around until 9am to sign their kids into camp. Bed Stuy Y, please do better. I hope someone from corporate reads these reviews. I intend to contact Domestic YMCA to voice my concerns and suggestions. All the best to the young people who have committed to being counselors and supervisors this summer. We appreciate you.

Vanessa R 6 years ago

Negative experience: Summer camp is a joke. Ridiculously unorganized. Why am I paying extra for extended am hours (which should just be regular hours anyway) just to waste that hour waiting for them to get it together? This is our last summer here.

Negative experience: I am very upset, because I've been trying to go swimming for the last two weeks. Open swim for adults is only during work hours. (A few hours in the afternoon), late nights 9pm-11pm(not ideal for working folk) and Saturday 6pm to 8pm(the only day that works for me).... Their pool has been closed for almost the last two weeks. When it was open, they wouldn't let me swim because it wasn't "adult open swim"... very frustrating!!!! I just want to go swimming!!!!

Positive experience: This is probably one of the smallest of the nyc YMCA’s I’ve been to. They offer less than some for a lower price— for example, there’s no towel service but it knocks down the monthly fee. I live in bedstuy I went here for years but quit two years ago for a variety of reasons so my review will be a little about that. Also, I’ve lived all around nyc for 22 years and have tried just about ever mid-low end gym (Bally’s, NYSC, Blink, Planet Fitness, Crunch). YMCA is great among those for their family-focused mission. I don’t have my own kids but really appreciate their dedication to supporting families in health and fitness. In addition, they will work with you to apply to an income contingent plan if you’re out of work and they Supposedly give families scholarships. I loved this YMCA while I was there because it was this kind of family place. I loved the classes (spin and caribbean dance were my favorites) and teachers. I secretly loved that my classmates were not New York’s next too model, like a lot of the Manhattan gyms, because I feel self conscious at the gym. But, the location is not very convenient to any trains. I live two stops further out on the A train and it’s a good 15-20 min walk to the gym from the train. So when I had access to a car I’d drive there, in the summers I’d just walk or bike, but the location became a deterrent. When bedstuy became a more popular place to live, the YMCA got more and more crowded. Spin classes became a battle ground to get the working bike (I’d get to the gym an hour early to get on the list, then live up outside the room to get a working bike as some were in disrepair), and the free weight area became overcrowded. The locker room required doing your best not to knock into some other naked person while changing, and sometimes failing. Eventually I moved on and left the Y. Don’t get me wrong, I hope this institution sticks around, but I hope they are able to grow into a larger space eventually to accommodate their growing membership.

Negative experience: Today, I brought my 6 year old son to his first swim lesson at 11:10am. It was a busy scene with kids leaving the pool and kids waiting to enter. The swim instructor called the stage 1 kids so I proceeded to the front of the locker room - she said that she was referring to stage 1 kids leaving the pool and to sit tight. After those kids left, I brought my son forward to the pool area again (I stood by the door) I told her that this was his first time there and that he wears glasses so he can’t see far. She said it’s ok and that she “got him”. All of the other kids were getting in the shower and he was waiting his turn. She then started to put the floating device on the kids. I asked her does he have to get in the shower first and she said that she will put his floaty on first. She then directed him in the shower after she put his device on. I turned my head for a moment to see where the parents seating area was and when I turned around, the instructor was walking the other kids to the other side of the pool while my son was LEFT UNATTENDED in the shower. At the same moment I was going to get my son, I said to myself out loud “why did she leave him in the shower”, another instructor walked passed. She proceeded to say that “it was my responsibility to make sure that my child is in the pool area”...HE WAS, AND I WAS THERE THE ENTIRE TIME. She proceeded to say that the instructor has a lot of kids and can’t keep track” (she was extremely rude and unprofessional). Are you kidding me?? This was her answer for a 6-year old swim class? I tried explaining to her that I was there the entire time and that I continuously told the first instructor that this was my sons first time. This young girl totally disregarded all safety issues. She tried to justify my 6 year old being left unattended by trying to blame me. I immediately took my child out of the shower. I spoke to the manager and also received a refund but I’m extremely disappointed. My son LOVES the water. What if he jumped in? Both of the instructors were on the opposite side of the pool. When parents bring their kids to the Y’s swim lessons, they are entrusting them with their safety. I was taken aback with the sheer disregard of safety and the concern for safety in which I’m not sure if this approach is a general consensus at this location. My child was so devastated as he was excited to go to swim class. I don’t believe that either of these young women should be in a setting which required a high degree of safety measures - especially the young girl that didn’t understand the egregious situation that was happening. What if something happened? What would I get...an I’m sorry. She should be terminated.

Positive experience: I love the morning spin class, however, I noticed that when a when a trainer is not up to par and people refused to come to the class, instead of replace the the trainer Brooklyn Y closed down the class. Bedford Ave Y is a great place, however, they have to listen to the paying people, give back the classes you took away and replace them with better trainers. I need the morning spin class three four times a week morning classes.

Negative experience: Their customers service sucks. I've been trying to contact the Y for 2 days now and no one and u mean no one has picked up the phone. How can u run a big establishment an no one can answer calls. At least 50 times I called.

Negative experience: They claim to be a community organization serving the community, but think it is fair to charge $57 a month for a parent and child membership for a woman who is disabled and is on public assistance. Then I discovered that with no contact or warning whatsoever, they began charging my credit card $100 a month instead!!! Searched the website for a way to contact, and it sends me around and around in circles. Evidently I cannot email them about this and will have to call on the phone, which I don't do, or go in there personally which is not going to be easy for me to do physically. It's 2018, people. They do not increase daytime programs for children OR their "babysitting" hours when schools are closed or over vacations during the school year - a terrible decision for those of us who are single parents without the money for sitters. I signed my son up for swim lessons and tried to take him there to swim with him myself, but the pool is so cold I cannot get in it, and after about 15 minutes my son's lips turn literally blue, he is shaking, and I have to take him out. If I sit on the edge, which is as far as I can get in without muscle spasms, the staff yells at me that I can't let my son in the pool without getting in with him. He's 9 and he can tread water just fine. In the gym, there are always dudes slamming the weights down extremely hard at strangely random intervals and the guy whose job it is to stand watch over the gym never says a single thing to any of them. I have to leave when they start doing that because it makes my heart jump out of my chest every single time. The gym is also inexplicably filled with teenagers at random times when they should be in school. I am an extremely out of shape 37-year-old woman with severe anxiety and I had this crazy idea that if I go to the gym at oh, say, 10 am on a weekday, I wouldn't be surrounded by screaming teenagers. All this and more, I can't go here anymore, and now I have to somehow get it together to go down there and argue with them about why they have decided it's cool to just start charging me $100 a month for no reason. This is no way to run a business, let alone a community service organization.

Fantastic experience: We love our local YMCA. The faculty is informative and they provide a clean, safe environment. Our daughter has swum here over 4 years. She has also attended various other programs including Holiday camp and summer camp. Our family looks forward to a continued success of our local Y into the coming year (2017).

Positive experience: I got to love the Y in BedStuy for it's unpretentious mix of people. It's a great neighborhood spot and also keeps the community together. The amenities are totally fine.

Negative experience: They don't answer the phone!! The online schedule is not updated!! Summer camp is going on. So if you come here to use any of the rooms, do so at your own risk. Or have a backup plan.

Positive experience: Has everything but the it's a little dull. The gym room is too tiny and crowded. And there's no music.

Positive experience: The weight room is pretty small...there's only one of each type of equipment. It would have been nice to get a tour of some sort with my guest pass instead of having to wander around on my own.

Positive experience: The vibe is relaxed yet motivating, and a diverse clientele helps encourage exercisers of all levels. Classes are great for adults and kids too!

Fantastic experience: One of the best YMCAs Ive ever been to. Great staff... Clean... Great equipment... And does a lot for the community. This place can get JAM PACKED at night so if you use weights or cardio machines, be mindful. Great pool too, nice basketball court, small track... Worth every penny

Fantastic experience: I grew up here and have many fond memories of bed sty. I have not been home in over 30 years but there is no place like home. Be home as soon as I get some new wells. Must see how the place has changed and would like to see some old friends. Especially a woman named Sonja Coleman.

Positive experience: The fact that adults can't swim all day is a problem..and then when u don't have share lanes. They have too many kid programs. They basically cater to kids..even when there's adult swim u still have to share lanes. And the lifeguard staff isn't that friendly at all

Positive experience: I don't usually write reviews, but I love this gym. The instructors for the classes are well informed and excited. The machines are clean, and the staff is friendly. Marguerite is an amazing spin class instructor (probably the best gym class I've been to, ever). My only issue is that there is not enough room to stretch, and do sit ups, push ups, etc. after your workout. I would love a room dedicated to just that.

Positive experience: Nice must better than it was years ago enjoy working out here

Shabazz Stuart 12 years ago

Positive experience: A great value, as this is the only major gym in the rapidly developing bed-stuy/clinton hill area. I have a few gripes however: - The staff can sometimes be indifferent or just plain rude. For example, I recently brought my friend to workout with me, with a guest pass. The person at the front desk demanded to see the ID of my friend, even though I had both my pass and ID. When my friend informed them that he left his ID at home, the staff-member rudely said "well come back another time." - The internet is spotty, and no one seems to know why. - Some of the machines are poorly maintained. - The hours leave me wanting. Closing at 8pm on Saturday and Sunday, in particular. Given the recent rate increase (50 dollars per month) expanding some of the hours would seem to be in order
