The gym is described as a place with a welcoming atmosphere that caters to all fitness levels, from beginners to serious athletes.
The environment allows for focused workouts without distractions, featuring a wide variety of essential equipment, including multiple squat racks, free weights, and unique machines not found elsewhere. Additionally, there are no contracts or excess fees, making it an accessible option for those looking for a straightforward gym experience.

Hyde Park Gym: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Sabrina and Josh at the front are incredible.
Fantastic experience: Good gym, and 7 day pass is awesome.
Fantastic experience: The exercise bike might be 20 years older than i am, but at least there's always a squat rack open 10/10
Fantastic experience: Killer old school gym
Fantastic experience: I ❤️ Hyde Park Gym
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, welcoming environment, and great selection of equipment. The photos and website can give you the impression that this is a hardcore bodybuilder/powerlifting gym, but it is truly open to all levels. The price is high compared to franchise gyms, but I believe the lack of crowding and healthy gym culture are what make it worth it. They have a 7-day free trial that doesn’t require any signup, so I’d recommend anyone who’s interested to give it a try.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym
Fantastic experience: Gym has its own character. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Friendly, Not pretentious, super down to earth people. Everybody is super cordial about distance and machine use. Has everything you need to have a legitimate classic workout. 10/10
Positive experience: A friend goes there
Fantastic experience: Very nice staff and great old school equipment that is seldom found in most gym facilities today! Very welcoming to people of all ages and skill levels.
Fantastic experience: Spectacular gym. They have all the essentials, great staff (shout out to Mason!), and a very relaxed atmosphere. People really seem to know each other too which is nice, but you can still do your workout in peace if that’s your prerogative. I also want to add that they have a nicely sized bike-rack!
Positive experience: This place was great. All the staff were super friendly and good to chat to. There was every type of equipment you could want or need. Interesting vibe. I did the free trial and would have definitely paid for a membership if I was in Austin for longer!
Fantastic experience: This place is an Austin institution. Some of the machines were welded in the 80s or something like that. No frills, no classes... just tons of racks and people trying to get those gains. The management is super friendly, and I've loved the no-nonsense, pay-upfront contract prices.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Austin
Fantastic experience: Friendly, old school gym. Love it!
Fantastic experience: The vibe of this gym alone put 2 inches on my biceps, heavy recommend
Fantastic experience: Great old time gym type of vibe! It might not have a lot of newer, more up to date type of machines, but it has a LOT of really cool old machines that equally, if not moreso, lead to a great gym experience. This place also has a really great assortment of strength building equipment that the staff would more than happily help you learn how to use. Additionally, the staff there is super nice, and even though I was only staying in Austin for a short while, Mason happily cancelled the autodraft charge for me after the first month to save me money. If you're looking for a really cool, old-school, "get down and dirty" type of gym that has ample equipment and NO intitiation fee, then this is for you!
Fantastic experience: ***Note: this review is really for the massive, tanned, veiny, muscle arm sculpture that graces the Hyde Park Gym entrance. I've never actually been inside the gym. *** I first saw this beast of an arm as a child. I grew up nearby, and so it was common sight as my parents drove me down Guad. I remember it always piqued my curiosity, even awe. "Only people who have arms like that are allowed in" I used to think. As Austin has continue to change and we see more and more businesses upgrade to Austin 2.0, I'm glad to see that this awesome sculpture has remained as a mainstay of the neighborhood. It continues to stir nostalgia in me every time I pass by. I do think this iconic sculpture would benefit from a refresh by the OG artist, as the skin is starting to flake off like a bad case of eczema. Otherwise, great gym! (as seen from the outside--I also like seeing folks diligently toning their bods doing circuit training in the lot--good work, gymgoers!)
Fantastic experience: Great place. Bunch of the equipment!
Fantastic experience: Seriously good gym for people who actually want to train
Fantastic experience: Great community, really supporting of new lifters and experienced lifters alike. Always a squat rack or platform open because there’s so many. Love this gym.
Fantastic experience: Brother and I went here for a day pass for a workout, and damn was I impressed. They're a serious lifting gym that adequately accommodates bodybuilding, olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and other strength disciplines. They have a bit of a dingy old-school vibe, but it's a very clean and friendly environment. Think somewhere you're not afraid to grunt and hiss and get a great workout in, but a beautiful place that's worth keeping pristine. Loved the environment, the people, and the equipment. 10/10 would lift here again. ONLY downside: it's not cheap... however, that's compared to Missouri standards, whereas it may be relatively normal in Austin, TX
Positive experience: Solid gym. It has all of the equipment you need. Everyone is there to to handle their business. Simple membership transaction.
Fantastic experience: Can’t say enough good things about this gym. Some of the things I love: - diverse and down to earth clientele. I am so inspired by the women that work out here!! - no contracts or other gym scams. - nothing obnoxious. Tons of equipment, no music blaring, no weird group exercise, just a place where you can safely work out (and plenty of squat racks!) - welcoming and community-oriented. I was a complete newbie to weightlifting when I joined. I hired one of the trainers based off of the owner’s recommendation, and I have felt so comfortable coming to this gym (as a 5 foot tall woman, nonetheless) for the past 1.5 years - friendly but respectful front desk staff If you are looking for a cool, low key, individually owned place to get strong, you’ve found it!
Fantastic experience: Love this gym. Best work outs for serious gains. Crew is very friendly, and equipment is thorough
Fantastic experience: This is my favorite old school gym in the country. I love visiting Austin because of it. Several olympic lifting platforms. Two giant machine, dumbbell, and barbell areas. A little cardio corner. And a stretching room. Plus, showers and bathrooms. I really love the flexible pricing as well. Honestly, I wish I lived in Austin again because it's damn near the perfect place to lift and train.
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Went to it twice while visiting Austin. True powerlifing gyms are few and far between. There was lots of equipment you don't see in most gyms (plenty of squat racks, thank god) but plenty of stuff for even the casual gym goer. It was nice to see a good mixture of men and women when I went which was nice to see. All of who seemed to take things pretty seriously but most importantly it was a positive motivating environment to work in. I wish there was something like this in Houston were I work. If I ever end up moving to Austin I'll be sure to live nearby to this gym.
Fantastic experience: Great, REAL gym. No fluff, just weights and nice people.
Fantastic experience: A hardcore gym. If you're a bodybuilder, olympic lifter, or powerlifter (professional or otherwise) then you should be aware this is pretty much the only option in Austin. And it's a great option. It's no Planet Fitness, you go to Hyde Park to work. If that sounds appealing, you shouldn't think twice before signing up.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Austin for lifting
Fantastic experience: Hands down the best gym in Austin. If you're serious about working out but don't want to go to a gym just to be seen (Golds etc), this is the place. Great trainers ask about Ryan Rhudy
Fantastic experience: Best gym in austin. Caters to hardcore, olympic lifters, bodybuilder's, crossfitter's and the like. Plenty of squat rack's, bumper plates, lifting platform's, GHDs, Reverse hyper, all kinds of leg presses, etc.Very friendly staff
Fantastic experience: I've been working out at Hyde Park Gym for the past few months and I have to agree with the rest of the 5-star reviews here, it's awesome. No frills, no show-offs, no "I'm in better shape than you" attitudes, just people trying to get better. Everybody I've encountered so far has been extremely nice and welcoming. I especially like that they open the doors up and let a breeze come through - it feels more natural that way for me instead of being inside a high-tech open room that has a TV everywhere you look. If you're looking to get in better shape, don't want to deal with anything extra, want a convenient location, and simply work out - this gym is for you. I don't think you'll ever be disappointed working out here.
Fantastic experience: The staff is very friendly and the aesthetic inspires hard work. Seems like a nice community of people.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly neighborhood gym. Lots of good dudes here that are very wecoming and helpful to a guy who is new to lifting.
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere
Negative experience: Reception was not so friendly and unforgiving for a one time mistake. I forgot to wash my hands before signing in… …that was it. She gave me an attitude from then on. I tried to apologize but it wasn’t acknowledged.
Positive experience: Great gym! Below are my only complaints: *When people use the two benches as squat racks when the other side has plenty of squat racks. *When trainers place their cups, binders, or butts on equipment that prevents others from using (e.g., sitting on a bench when conducting training, etc.)
Fantastic experience: I have been a member for almost eight years and love this gym. I has people of a wide range of ages and abilities and I (though old and feeble-ish) never feel out of place. I like the absence of TVs and Muzak. I enjoy this gym's Austin and Hyde Park flavor. Strongly recommend you try it!
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Austin if you want to avoid the gymbros, and work on real strength. Good family/small environment
Fantastic experience: Love this gym and it’s community
Negative experience: Females beware. The owner of this gym (BROOK) is aggressive and threatening. He accosted me while in the middle of a squat set yelling about paperwork my trainer was supposed to send. My trainer had honestly forgotten about the request, but rather than wait for me to finish my set and/or wait for me to finish my workout and approach me professionally, he assumed malice and started yelling at me in front of countless other members. This same owner had previously thrown shade and was generally unfriendly. The other guy that works the desk Alan is nice and the gym doesn't blast horrid music like other gyms do.
Male or female, this just wasn't a good fit. Who brings their trainer into a gym without permission.... or even checking in with the front desk? And what kind of professional trainer (a purported former gym owner himself) puts their client in a situation like that? I hate to break it to you, KRISTIE, but these shenanigans will be met with the same response at every gym in Austin. Maybe you should move back to Dallas.
Fantastic experience: I recently moved back to Austin. This place is incredible - a friendly, straight-ahead lifters’ gym with very clean and well-maintained equipment. Ideal!
Fantastic experience: no stupid music, no tvs
Fantastic experience: This is exactly the kind of gym I needed. Good equipment, no frilly classes or salespeople. I love that they have some equipment here that I’ve never seen before at any other gym. It’s quaint, no spa or sauna, just a place for people to workout comfortably and I love it. It’s simplicity is what makes it perfect. There’s also a very cute dog that keeps morale up, even on your 3rd superset.

Fantastic experience: Great facility, great people. One of the only places in town with actual weightlifting and powerlifting equipment that doesn’t require a subscription for group classes. That’s a big deal. Also has everything needed for general fitness and/or bodybuilding.
Fantastic experience: Quality gym. No hassle here.
Fantastic experience: Non-crowded and well-equipped traditional weightlifting facility. Excellent value for the price.
Fantastic experience: The highest complement I can give this gym is that the only time a man has ever spoken (unprompted) to me, he was asking to take a form check video. Great gym.
Fantastic experience: For serious persons wanting to exercise and build muscle. Kirby is an excellent trainer. Quiet and so very effective.
Positive experience: Need to update hours as they are misleading. I showed up at when they say they open (5 AM) and lights were out. Other than that it’s a fantastic and fascinating place to lift at.
Fantastic experience: A great experiance
Fantastic experience: Quality gym. No hassle here.
Fantastic experience: Love his place. Once saw Major Appplewhite. The staff is really friendly and he equipment gives a good mix of what you need in terms of free weights and good machines where you don't need a spotter
Fantastic experience: Decided to check this gym out when I first moved to Austin and glad that I did! Not only do they have all the equipment you'd ever need, but the staff is super friendly and helpful as well. If I ever find myself in the area again, I'll for sure be a returning member here.
Fantastic experience: My first workout since gyms opened again during the pandemic, and I'm very impressed with the strict protocol. I felt safe at all times, and had a fabulous workout. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: I got to try Hyde Park today and really enjoyed it. Good, clean facility, friendly staff and tons of equipment. I even got to lift with the owner Brook, who seems like a really nice guy. Would highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: There's something really nice about going to a gym that is just a good ol' fashioned gym. The staff is friendly and the members work hard. It's very motivating to see these people and work out around them. I'm about 6 months pregnant and wanted to hire a trainer to help me build muscle so I'd be able to bounce back soon after delivery. Josh Trammell has been working with my husband and me for a few weeks now and I have seriously never worked out more hard and confidently in my life. Josh has been very strategic in how he develops our workout routines. He makes sure we understand and practice proper form and body movements before we really push it. After about 3-4 weeks of training 3 times a week, I've gone higher in my upper body weights than I ever have in my life (I was very much a beginner, but without the accountability, form training, and encouragement of a trainer like Josh, I could hardly make the same kind of improvements on my own). HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Josh's personal training services at Hyde Park Gym. I'm gonna be a damn fit pregnant lady by month 9.
Fantastic experience: All the essentials for proper powerlifting workout! Opens early enough for morning workout before heading to the office.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been coming to Hyde Park Gym (HPG) for years and consider it my second home. This gym has plenty of equipment to put in serious work, whether you’re a strength athlete or someone looking to improve their health. HPG may look intimidating (due to the old school atmosphere and giant flexing arm), but you’ll quickly realize it’s everything but. The people I’ve met here are kind, supportive, and a pleasure to be around. They even re-rack their weights! For membership plans, HPG have several options: day passes, 10 visit punch cards, weekly, monthly, quarterly, biannually, annually, and recurring plans via PayPal. They offer a trial week for Austin residence that want to try HPG for the first time. If you’re looking for a gym with: - A good community - plenty of free weights - access to Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and strongman equipment - day passes and a several membership options then HPG is the gym you want.
Fantastic experience: If you like retro gyms this is the place for you. Liked the quiet feel of this gym. Staff is awesome.
Fantastic experience: Great place it's all about business getting the work done polite people
Positive experience: Old school
Fantastic experience: Original! Great place to work out!
Fantastic experience: Awesome facility with everything I need. Stopped by here because I was visiting, and needed a place to get a good lift in (I do a lot of barbell work) along with some strength & conditioning circuits. Blake was courteous, attentive, and welcoming, and I truly appreciated the fact that he showed me around the whole place before I started my workout. (Someone get that guy a burger!) Thanks again, and I'll be back! ;-)
Fantastic experience: Every day I walk in the gym I'm reminded of how unique the place is. There are much more smiles than frowns among members. The staff is authentic. And, the people who train, lift, and work at Hyde Park Gym cultivate a positive atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Friendly gym, serious weightlifting equipment and good prices.
Fantastic experience: Old roid gym with no drama gear and great pricing. If you like a gym where people are real about getting fit and not hung up on the fashion of fitness this is a great place for you. It has every machine to isolate muscles and a tonne of freeweights. The cardio equipment/machines are pretty non existent so if that's your thing go for a run around the block instead.
Fantastic experience: I love Hyde Park Gym and can’t imagine working out anywhere else. I was lucky enough to train with Dave Goodin. He really knows his stuff. The people and culture of Hyde Park Gym make it great!
Thanks for such a great review Ruth!
Fantastic experience: Back in the early 90’s I first set foot in this old school gym. I trained here till 2002 before leaving the city. I’m came back and tried another gym because of it’s close proximity, but after many years there, I’m back home in the gym that started it all for me. This place looks intimidating with the massive flexed arm jutting out of the building, and yes, there are some serious athletes, but also some old timers and, what would be considered “normal looking” people. The one common thread is that everyone is friendly and most will gladly share a piece of gym equipment if needed.
Thanks Austin! Glad to have you home
Fantastic experience: Great gym, staff are really friendly. All the equipment and weights that you need. The atmosphere is calm and allows you to find us and get your training done efficiently. Membership rates are great.
Fantastic experience: Probably one of the best gyms I have ever used. Good culture, good people, good lifting. It is bare bones, but it's everything you need.
Fantastic experience: Best place for lifting!
Positive experience: Great old school envioment & friendly staff. Will be returning when I go back to Austin.
Fantastic experience: Nice neighborhood gym
Fantastic experience: No frills gym, best in town
Fantastic experience: Probably one of the best gyms I have ever used. Good culture, good people, good lifting. It is bare bones, but it's everything you need.
Thanks so much Aditya! We love to hear you're enjoying your time here. Happy New Years!
Fantastic experience: Hpg has been my home gym for about 8 months now. I really like it. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. It's a legit strength, oly and bb gym. The equipment is plentiful and maintained well and lacks the polished glam of other globo-gyms ...which is perfect. This place has soul and history! Husefeld stones too!!
Fantastic experience: The atmosphere is as intimidating as it is inspiring. I visited Hyde Park Gym while on a work trip and decided to meet my coach there. As a new Weightlifter, I was so impressed with the facility and all of the strong people utilizing it. There were ample machines, bars, weights, and platforms for weightlifters and powerlifters alike. The nostalgia brought in with all of the images of athletes throughout the years is strong and the members are friendly. Will be visiting next time I’m in Austin.
Fantastic experience: Best locally run gym in town. No frills and no BS; old school!
Fantastic experience: I love this gym and I will never ever go to a different gym. My company has a gym in it and I still drive the 10 minutes out of my way to go to Hyde Park. Everyone in this gym is there to have a good ass work out. They're not there to hangout, to play on their phone, or to take it easy, they're there to pick up some heavy ass weights. The energy is amazing and unmatched at any other gym. I can't recommend this place enough. Warning: not for people whose idea of a gym is a line of treadmills and a couple squat racks
Fantastic experience: Love this old school gym. It’s clean & every single person is so warm & welcoming. Everyone is there to get a great work out in. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Been going here for years, one of the best gyms in Austin with the best community in Austin.
Fantastic experience: Hyde Park Gym has the oldschool hard core electric atmosphere with awesome well-maintained retro equipment! Very clean and very good Gym!
Fantastic experience: Great gym, staff are really friendly. All the equipment and weights that you need. The atmosphere is calm and allows you to find us and get your training done efficiently. Membership rates are great.
Thanks Nick!

Fantastic experience: Real gym with no gimmicks. Room full of squat racks, which is a nice change. Barely ever packed!
Fantastic experience: Great old school gym. Low daily prices. Simple place for even complex workouts. Definitely recommend it!
Fantastic experience: Great hardcore/old school gym. Equipment is old but well maintained. Great atmosphere. Good to do business with as well.
Fantastic experience: I started going here a few weeks ago. It's a great gym for the serious lifter: everything you need, motivated and focused gym-goers, and not full of fancy gimmicks.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to workout.....friendly staff....superb equipment.....old school though......
Fantastic experience: Locally owned and operated, keeping Austin real. A truly one-of-a-kind old school gym. Whether you're there for weight lifting, power lifting, body building, or basic cardio and weight training, this place rocks!
Positive experience: Great powerlifting gym with old school feel
Fantastic experience: I was visiting Austin for a week for a conference and bought a week pass here. I always like training at more serious and hardcore gyms, even when I travel. Although to many newbie lifters, hardcore gyms can seem intimidating, if you come in to do work, these are really great atmospheres where members get to know each other and support each other regardless of goal (just get in shape, lose some pounds, or something more extreme like competitive powerlifting or bodybuilding). The gym is an old school facility. Much of the equipment could be in a fitness museum. Belts, chalk, lots of racks and platforms, 1980s era bodybuilding posters from local shows give it an old school vibe. However, it is kept clean, which is not always the case at some old school gyms. Solid gym.
Negative experience: No military discount (you are a gym in the biggest military state in the union lol). Was very crowded with most the equipement not being in that good of shape which is fine, but not at the prices they charge for membership. Not a bad gym, just not a good one
Fantastic experience: LOOOOOVE HPG
Fantastic experience: best coach
