Asheville Racquet Club Downtown: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Great place for tennis!
Negative experience: Once again the pool heater is broken.
Fantastic experience: Nice location. Great steam room and pools. Wish the indoor pool was heated.
Fantastic experience: Fun place to play
Fantastic experience: ARC is an incredible tennis community. Lots of hitting partners of all different levels and easy to meet people. The coaches are knowledgeable and friendly. Indoor hard courts, outdoor clay, and outdoor hard courts make tennis available all year. The place is practically a second home for me.
Negative experience: Called 3 times, left two voicemails to make an appointment to tour the club, prior to joining; never received a call back. If they treat a prospective member like this, I can’t imagine how poorly they treat their members. After this experience and reading all the negative reviews we will look at the YMCA and the Omni Park Grove for membership.
Fantastic experience: What a great place to play and enjoy free time and at a very reasonable price. Just slightly more than a YMCA membership and it includes pickleball and tennis. The club strikes a good balance between luxury and budget - facility wise. Cenyu runs the pickleball program with charm and professionalism. Her recent program changes and explanation to members in person and by email indicate the forward thinking she brings to the job. It just keeps getting better at ARC for pickleball. I'm in my 4th year as a member. Definitely the best place in Buncombe County to play pickleball . . . . by far.
Negative experience: If you’re thinking about Golfing here I would change your mind quick.. They don’t use Tee times it’s “first come first serve” which is a ridiculously stupid way to manage a golf course. Tee Times are specifically designed to keep Golfers from waiting and sitting on top of each other. there’s clearly a lack of ability or intelligence in owning and operating a golf course by the ARC.
Negative experience: Generally, the facilities are run down and not maintained well. Membership fees keep increasing, but almost weekly emails about this-or-that being out-of-service. Management is almost non existent.
Fantastic experience: I've been a member of Asheville Racquet Club since 2003. The club has the BEST tennis pros offering a wide variety of clinics for all ability levels. I recently participated in a mixed doubles clinic with Jeff Duncan, he identified a weakness in my overhead and gave clear, concise feedback for me to fix it! Love ARC!!
Fantastic experience: We LOVE the swimming instructor, Shalene! She’s the reason we joined the Racquet Club. My son’s swimming has improved so much. We’ve had great interactions with everyone that works there (except the director) and we love the facility. The indoor pool is usually 85 degrees which is quite pleasant and the outdoor pool is wonderful in the summer.
Negative experience: Since joining Asheville Racquet Club less than a year ago my membership rate has changed twice due to capital expenses. The email cited to be able to provide a valued experience. To speak on the experience, the gym and locker rooms are not cleaned in the morning. When you come in all the trash bins are full and there is often no paper towels or hand soap. Those types of items are bare minimum for a gym. On top of that the water has been on and off in the facility. I joined a gym with a locker so I can get ready for work, if I can’t get ready for work after my work out, it’s not convenient and it’s not serving the purpose or the value I need. In addition, the only services I use on the gold membership are the gym and pool so I’m not an excessive user of any services. In short, I think the value is truly lost on me when all the capital improvements are going to the south Asheville location and the gym is consistently dirty without and without hot water.
Positive experience: The tennis courts are nice and i like the lobby area.
Positive experience: I use this location solely for the gym and the gym isn’t the best. Missing a lot of machines I would consider staples in a gym and the energy levels are very low and not motivating. Usually not many people though so you don’t need to wait for weights/benches or be around a lot of people.
Fantastic experience: Clean, pleasant facilities. Upbeat and challenging classes. Childcare. Indoor and outdoor pool, hot tub and steam room. All at a reasonable price. No other secular gym with an indoor pool can touch this. Love that it also gives access to two locations. I wish there were more locations.
Fantastic experience: The Racquet Club saves our winters! We love the ARC in summer, but we REALLY enjoy it during the long, cold winters in Asheville. It’s easy to forget it’s chilly outside when all 3 kiddos are busy swimming in the indoor heated pool.
Negative experience: Terrible experience. Was told the pool would be open until 9 so we structured our evening in town around that, only to show up at 7:30 and he refused to let us in for “insurance reasons”. Very frustrating. Honestly our whole stay at the resort has been far less than we hoped for.
Negative experience: This "racquet" club forces individual members who are only interested in tennis to also pay for pool, golf, fitness center, and childcare access. $129 a month plus additional fees just to have court access is absurd. I guess they only want to see a certain inco.e bracket on their courts.
Fantastic experience: Excellent tennis facility. They have large number of outdoor courts and have indoor tennis courts too. The lounge social area is great inside. Came here because of a usta tennis tournament which was well organized by their staff. Over all one of the best tennis facility in this region.
Thank you so much, we appreciate the positive comments. We love hosting USTA tournaments and hope we can continue to run them efficiently for many years to come.
Negative experience: There was an issue with the inside pool at the downtown site. The only reason I belonged. There has been very little communication on when it would reopen There has been no offer to compensate us for the loss of the heated pool.
Negative experience: Pool is great and well run. Best pool experience in asheville. EDIT: I wrote this review a couple years ago. I gave 5 stars because we were happy with how the pool was run. My wife and I loved going every day to swim laps for exercise. We used the hot tub and steam room. It wasn't perfect, but they clearly cared about patrons and maintenance, etc. Now, it kinda sucks. Things are always broken, and they don't seem to care. The staff is rude and indifferent. I'm close to cancelling my family's membership. The only reason I still give this place money is because my daughter is on the swimteam, and they have good coaches. This is really sad for me to say, because I have spent the last 8 years here with my family and friends. We have all enjoyed the pools together. We were and are always polite, follow the rules, and etc. That said, I cannot recommend the ARC downtown pool. There are better pool options (outdoor and indoor) in the area.
Thank you for the great review ... we love our pool too!
Fantastic experience: Love the saltwater pool and the excellent customer service!
Fantastic experience: Lovely pool!
Fantastic experience: Super nice gym. Everyone is friendly and it's never too busy
Fantastic experience: Always such a pleasure to come here! Chloe and Jared were so nice to me the other night with my guest pass and he went out of his way to spend a few minutes talking and getting to know me. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to join. The front desk staff was wonderful to me
Fantastic experience: Today is May 23rd it's my first visit back since the pandemic and I have to say props to the crew at ARC downtown for keeping the facilities so nice clean up to date and everyone safe! There I was one of three the first swimmers, actually the second person in the pool and that Waters never felt better ever! McKenzie was super nice and got my 20 laps in! Thank you for being open during this uncertain time! I'm so glad to still be a member here, thank you everyone ARC Downtown.
Thank YOU for sticking with us and for posting such a wonderful review. We are truly thankful!
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout and take classes. My daughter loves swimming in the salt water pool!
Fantastic experience: Great facility! Great indoor/outdoor pickleball courts. Cinyu, the pro was especially helpful. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Come here all the time when we stay in Asheville. Love it!
Fantastic experience: Great club... Indoor and outdoor courts... Outdoor mostly clay... Workout facilities and swimming. Excellent ownership and great staff.
Fantastic experience: I am so grateful for the Asheville Racquet Club! I have been able to swim year round, which has been an essential piece of my well being. The saltwater pool feels luxurious and affordable! The pool atmosphere and culture is friendly and welcoming, and mostly people are respectful of each other's space and time. Over the past several months they have done their best to adhere to health guidelines while offering us as much as they can. Not sure what I would do without them!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful review, Megan. It means more to us than you will ever know. We appreciate your support during this challenging time!
Fantastic experience: The people that are just lovely helpful and don't mind assisting if needed and the manager Mike Green is very insightful a wonderful addition there and his assertiveness powerful attitude of wanting you to achieve your goal whatever that may be it's just impactful. And not only that you get that one-on-one treatment field and that's what I like and most gyms is overcrowded not enough instructors to assist and most of them be cluttered and stuffy but not here it's just enough room for you to move around. It's just a pleasant experience overall that's all I can say
WOW!! Thank you so much. That truly means a lot to us. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Nice club
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member for 5 plus years and my daughters and I love it! There is something for us all. We mostly go to the down town location. It’s clean, has everything I need for fitness and staff are very nice and helpful. Will be a lifetime member for sure!
Apologies for the late response, Ally! Thank you so much for the wonderful review. It truly means a lot to us that you can already see yourself as a lifelong member. We appreciate you!
Fantastic experience: Clean and excellent facilities I can't highly recommend them enough!
Thank you, Michael! We are thrilled to hear you are enjoying our amenities and community here at ARC.
Fantastic experience: Members for 6 years now. Convenient location, clean and never too busy.
Thank you so much for your lovely review and your support of the club through the past challenging years. We truly appreciate you sticking with us!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful people and a great 9 hole course.
Fantastic experience: Great place for working out and getting in shape
Thank you, Christopher! We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on our club.
Fantastic experience: Members for 6 years now. Convenient location, clean and never too busy.
Fantastic experience: Great gym - clean and upscale. Tennis courts are well maintained.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful facility with polite staffers
Fantastic experience: Beautiful facilities, excellent teaching staff. Highly recommend!
Thank you, we love our teaching staff as well!
Positive experience: Played indoor soccer here for a few years. Only one bathroom available. Turf field is in less than good shape with holes and lots of loose turf, could be updated. But good enough due to being the only place hosting an indoor soccer league.
Thank you for the review Kylie. We are constantly updating the facility, this last week we painted the walls, replaced the faulty lights, built and installed new goals, and are making positive changes to the soccer community here. New turf is not an option right now, but we are doing the best we can to improve the surface we have now, and will circle back to the turf again soon. We hope to see you again real soon!
Fantastic experience: Very nice club. Salt water pool, sauna and hot tub. The entire staff is outstanding.
Fantastic experience: Super deluxe staff
Fantastic experience: My family have been members for about 6 months and love it. There are 3 packages to choose from, including one for those of us that don't "racquet" (like me and my family). The child care hours are very convenient and the pool is fairly available with everything they have going on in the winter. Hoping the outdoor pool will allow more water access duringe the summer. The staff is nice and the facility is clean. Mike, the Sales Manager is great! We love the occasional events held here and enjoy the community atmosphere. Recommended.
Fantastic experience: Every day I am here. A true gem of the area.
Negative experience: People are so rude...employees and members.... went with a friend to check it out and to see about joining....no way would I want to be a part of that! Try being friendlier people!!!
We are very sorry for your less than great experience Sonya, and we will address all of your concerns with Management. We appreciate your feedback and we hope that if you ever visit us again you will find a more friendly, welcoming approach which we endevour to have!
Positive experience: I was working in the area and didnt visit as a patron. That being said, 4 stars due to the appearance. It looks like a great facility, lots of easy free parking. Looks nice.
Positive experience: I like this place! It would be 4 stars if the overnight crew had turned in my forgotten suit to the lost and found and if they were a little faster in fixing broken equipment and pass cards. Nice people. I like the pool and the gym is very big. I wish there were rope weights on the walls but you can’t have everything.
We are very sorry it took us a little more time to get your various challenges sorted out, we hope we can be more on top of things in the future! Thank you for taking the time out to give us a review and we are glad you like us! We have started some more intense training fitness programs called HEAT which is High Endurance Athletic Training which makes use of ropes weights etc. We hope you get to try that again at some stage.
Positive experience: We used the indoor pool here. The pool and hot tub were great at the end of a long day. The staff could be more welcoming at the desk. I kind of felt like they were put out that we had questions.
Fantastic experience: This place is amazing! Everyone's friendly, the pools and tennis courts are very good, and it's a great place to hang out or get work done! Or work out!
Fantastic experience: Our family just joined. We love using the equipment and pool, and the kids' place is awesome!
Fantastic experience: I love love love this gym. Nice facilities, beautiful spa, salt water pool, and awesome classes all day. Thanks guys!
Positive experience: Pilates instructor was great.
Positive experience: Was ok
Positive experience: Not often crowded, great exercise classes, big outdoor pool and indoor pool as well.
Positive experience: I’ve been a happy member of the racquet club for 3 years. I tend to be very particular about gyms (I.e. atmosphere, cleanliness, crowdedness etc.). That being said, I enjoy the feel of both locations. The south club’s remodel is gorgeous! I find both downtown and south to be clean no matter what time of day I go. I’ve not had any trouble having waiting for machines in the weight room. It should be noted that I don’t regularly play tennis, so i’ve not experienced any issues getting a court; as has been mentioned in other reviews. The yoga classes i’ve frequented are all wonderful and I would highly recomend all of the instructors. My only complaint is that they aren’t open later! Overall, very happy member!
Fantastic experience: Great price and nice facility
Fantastic experience: Great gym - clean and upscale. Tennis courts are well maintained.
Thank you Divitia for taking the time out to give us a great review!
Positive experience: Good Staff and clean facility
Negative experience: Indoor pool at downtown location is FILTHY and led to us changing our membership elsewhere
Positive experience: Good pool that the whole family cab swim in, with one labe reserved for lappers. Serviceable hot tub. Some food items available for purchase. Locker room (men's) clean and functional.
Negative experience: No consideration for full tier members overpriced, over sells all weekend tennis courts of to usta leagues. Swimming pool has a no lap lanes its used as kiddie pool all the time, parking over fills in weekends due to hotel crown plaza
We are sorry but we do not show a record of you being a past or current member of ARC.
Negative experience: Management rarely responds to emails, and doesn't resolve anything when they do. They are always out of towels. I've had to dry off with my dirty gym shirt and return to work. My husband has had to do this multiple times. It's ridiculous. Kids overrun their pool; don't expect to be able to lap swim. Kids also open and close the steam room door, constantly. Took them six months to fix their sauna. Save your money. Plenty of free courts in Asheville if tennis is your thing. Aston Park has clay courts open to the public for 5-10 bucks. Wish I would've known all this before becoming a member.
Positive experience: If you play tennis this is the place to be. All the teaching pros have went out of their way to help my family in any possible way. Numerous tennis clinics ranging from free to advanced to show up and play. Parking is a little tight and every once in a while you might have to wait for a towel even though I had a pro (Jeff) go get one fresh out of the dryer one time. Pool is convenient with the hot tub. Indoor courts are nice in the winter months.
Negative experience: If you need to move or need to do anything outside of ARC policy, they make it laborious. This is a for profit business that is not focused on customer service. While the salt water pool is nice and the locker rooms are clean, it is hard to get to and from, and ARC would not survive in a bigger city for the lack of attention to detail and their sticky membership packages.
Negative experience: I had a membership here for a two year period, but finally decided to leave due lack of standard facility lack of training programs, general amenity discomfort and poor management. The program training director (who also works as director of sales) could not address simple program questions and really failed when it came to current knowledge of exercise science. He did offer me a tiny 1970's BPA styrofoam cup filled with uncertified coffee. When I said "no thank you" he proceeded to tell me that it was loaded with "antioxidants." A random side note: he also thought Spain was not a Mediterranean country. Very high staff turn over at the front desk. Off putting practices such as writing on the gym towels with magic markers. The mens locker room at the downtown resort location is so small that your backside often brushes with other members while trying to get your pants on. Did I mention that the DT location only has ONLY two showers? The sauna at the South location is a very small dark and creepy closet with a single light. No indoor pool at the South location. I moved to the Grove Hotel Athletics Center and I have been very-very happy.
Fantastic experience: My home away from home!
Fantastic experience: Kim Rhodes Boose is the most energetic, upbeat inspiring person there who trains and guides you to be the best you can be!
