Sports and fitness play a big role in life at St. John’s Annapolis. If you’re not interested in playing on intramural sports teams, you can try fencing, sailing, croquet, or working out in the gym.

A school that specializes in Great Books might not be where you would expect to find a lot of attention given to athletics, since there are only three intercollegiate sports on campus, one of which is croquet. However, at St. John's, sports and fitness are a big part of life. This is not to say that everyone at the school is a football fanatic or a strenuous athlete, but many people consider the intramural program to be just as important as the academic program. If team sports aren't your thing, you can try fencing, sailing, or any of the many watersports available in the Hodson Boathouse, or go to the gym (affectionately known as Temple Iglehart) for a workout class or some weight training. All that matters is that you keep moving.

Intramural sports are a big part of life at Annapolis, with over 50% of students taking part. Every member of the college community is automatically assigned to one of five teams - the Druids, Greenwaves, Guardians, Hustlers, and Spartans. Participation is voluntary, but alumni, parents, and siblings are all welcome to join in. The focus is on teamwork and friendly competition, and the communication and interpersonal skills developed through the sports are seen as an extension of what students learn in seminar. Sports on offer include soccer, Athenian reasonball (a Johnnie thing...), basketball, volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, netball, and handball, though the selection can change from year to year. Loyalty to your team is a big thing around here - just ask any alumni.

The intramural program at the Polity is open to all women and non-cisgendered members, and many take advantage of it. Kunai is another option for those looking for competitive sports. The league offers soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, and more. Kunai is known for both its friendly and fierce competition.

Johnnie Rae-Ann Clement describes the league as a group of people who are dedicated to creating a healthy and fun environment where they can learn to play sports and grow as athletes. She says that they are a family or a group of friends who are like hellhounds.

Iglehart Hall, which students and faculty affectionately call Temple Iglehart, has a full-size basketball court, suspended running track, weight room, cardio room, table tennis, and dance studio. You can borrow all kinds of athletic equipment from the school.

The Temple Iglehart also has a schedule of different workout classes that rotate, including yoga, core class, weight training, and more. You can check the events calendar to see what is happening.

Hodson Boathouse is a tall building that overlooks College Creek on Back Campus. It has been used for many years by students, faculty, and staff who want to enjoy the college's waterfront location. The old building is the home of the St. John's crew and sailing teams (and can be used for events such as receptions and dinner parties).

In addition to joining the crew or sailing teams, students can take out canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, and other watersports equipment from the Boathouse. The Boathouse offers students a chance to get out on the water and make the most of the campus waterfront.

Annapolis, located on College Creek, offers many opportunities for water sports. The Hodson Boathouse on the back campus serves as headquarters for an active crew program, which includes sweep-oar rowing and sculling. The crew team practices multiple mornings per week and competes in intercollegiate regattas.

If you're looking to learn how to play croquet from some of the best players in the country, St. John's College is the place to be. The team competes in the United States Croquet Association Collegiate Division and has more national titles than any other team in the league. They also take on the Naval Academy in the Annapolis Cup match each spring, which is one of the biggest and most beloved campus traditions.

The St. John's croquet team is open to all students, regardless of experience level. Practices focus on playing games rather than doing repetitive exercises. This allows players to learn the physical aspects of the sport and the strategies needed to win at the same time. Members of the team are usually out on the field several times a week and are happy to teach newcomers.

The St. John’s College Fencing Union is a club that practices and competes with all three modern weapons—foil, épée, and saber. Equipment is available for use.

The club hosts tournaments that are open to all USFA members of the appropriate ranking on behalf of the Maryland Division of the United States Fencing Association. The undergraduate students also compete against other collegiate teams in the Baltimore-Washington Collegiate Fencing Conference (BWCFC), which is a 12-school consortium of varsity and club fencing teams.

The St. John's intercollegiate sailing team's mission is to introduce students to the exciting world of competitive sailing. As a member of the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, the St. John's College Sailing Team competes in three to four regattas per semester in FJs and lasers. The sailing team has a dedicated coach and practices several times a week, including occasional scrimmages with the Naval Academy.
