Anchorage Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Fantastic experience: Highly recommend! I’m in Anchorage for work and decided to drop in for open mat—so glad I did! I’ve dropped into other gyms while traveling, and this one really stood out. Super welcoming vibe, no egos, and just a fun place to train. Everyone I rolled with was cool, and I definitely left with some ninja knowledge I’ll be bringing back to my home gym—thanks to one of the coaches, Jamison, who took extra time to walk me through a move I’ve been struggling with. Thank you! The only small downside was that there weren’t any other women to roll with, but someone mentioned there’s usually a solid female presence—so I probably just caught an off day. (It was really nice outside!)lol Would 100% drop in again next time I’m in town!

Negative experience: Visiting Alaska for some backpacking and decided to do a drop in class. I’d be cautious rolling with people here. I rolled with a small brown belt dude who was ripping heel hooks extremely fast and aggressive with zero knowledge of my skill level. I stopped him and questioned if this is how everyone trains here. Couple of the people were friendly but overall a very unwelcoming environment. Maybe just an off day as I see many great reviews but I highly recommend being cautious if you come to train here

Fantastic experience: Jiu-Jitsu mom here visiting from Seattle and professor Ryder invited my teen daughter and niece to train while in town and my gosh, the professionalism the minute you walk in the studio by his staff and the cleanliness of the gym. The girls talked about how organized and how friendly the kids they trained with were with them. They felt intimidated at first but were thankful of how attentive professor Ryder was when needed. Speaking on their behalf, they had one of the best training experienced at ABJJ. My cousin who is from Anchorage is ready to sign up her 10yr old daughter and ready to be a part of the ABJJ family. Thank you professor Ryder and the staff for welcoming us during our short visit.

Fantastic experience: I was visiting the gym with my kids who practice BJJ in Florida. As soon as we entered, Bryan, one of the students started talking to my kids and making them feel welcome. He introduced them to the head coach who was also approachable and friendly. The vibe that we felt from both made us understand the spirit of the school. We were able to see practice. It was great. Several coaches at the same time, each attending to a great many individual groups and skill level. Their dedication was also commendable. It's a great place.

Fantastic experience: ABJJ is an incredible gym with top-tier coaching and a welcoming atmosphere. The instructors are knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely care about your progress. They were also very understanding and professional when I needed help with a specific issue, which really showed the strength of their culture. Highly recommend to anyone training in Anchorage.

Fantastic experience: Great Gym! Attended two different classes during my visit to AK ( gi and no gi). I was impressed by the clean facility and quality instruction. Ryder (the owner & head instructor)broke down complex movements into simple-to-understand concepts during the technical portion of class. Training partners were friendly and skilled. Overall a great place to train in AK.

The coach was knowledgeable with a good sense of humour, which always makes training fun. Everyone I rolled with was friendly and respectful. I started with very little experience in combat sports/martial arts and was quite apprehensive when I stepped through the door but quickly realized I had no reason for feeling this way because the staff, instructors and students were all very welcoming. ABJJ has a culture of respect and, a family oriented approach to martial arts that is palatable for the uninitiated and the experienced fighter alike.

All the staff at ABJJ are so friendly and amazing! I am thoroughly impressed with the cleanliness of this gym. The ABJJ Family is a group of people who are just that, Family! Love this gym!

Fantastic experience: I am absolutely thrilled with my experiences at ABJJ - truly a phenomenal gym! It was apparent right away to our family this isn't just any gym; it's a community. Professor Ryder, Christine, Coach Shane, Coach Derek and all the staff we have met and learned from are professional, kind and welcoming! It’s also evident they take pride in maintaining a pristine space, not your typical gym environment. The cleanliness and high-end HEPA air purifiers are a testament they understand that cleanliness is important if you want to be able stay healthy and train regularly. The HIIT, Muay Thai, and Kick Boxing classes are my personal favorites. Each class is not only an incredible workout but an educational experience where you learn proper techniques—all while having a blast (and geared towards all ages and fitness levels)!

Fantastic experience: Came in and tried their free trial class and immediately was impressed with their customer service and the gym atmosphere.  Gym cleanliness is very important to me, and this is by far the cleaness BJJ/MMA gym I've ever been to.  What I wasn't expecting is that they have hospital grade air purifiers all over the academy, the exact same ones hospitals and clinics used during the pandemic scare.  They have them in every corner of the gym. I'm new to BJJ and MMA but I've done a lot of research and know a lot of people in the community, and their curriculum is top-notch.  Their moves of the week are planned out, and you can view it on their website if you forgot something or can't take notes, this is especially nice for beginners like me.  I also tried their Cardio Kickboxing and Muay Thai classes...what a workout and again the instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful, the same as the BJJ instructors. To top it off, ABJJ has an incredibly full schedule with over 50 classes a week (double what any other school offers) which is really important to me as I have a very busy schedule.

Their Black belts will give you a good and complete work out and will ensure that you learn technique the right way. The environment is awesome and full of great people. If you are looking for great Jiu-Jitsu (not good Jiu-Jitsu but great) make sure you stop by.

Super welcoming across the board, rental gi's available if you forgot to pack, and an all around great knowledge base with people more than excited to share. This trip was 25 years out from my last time in Anchorage, hopefully it won't take as long to make it back again as I really want to spend some more time with Ryder and his team.

Ryder and his team welcomed my son in after an encounter with a bully at school and have had an enormous impact on his life in the 3 months that he's been coming here. Beyond the 10 pounds of muscle and self-defense skills that he's gained, he also now exudes confidence and pride. It's truly amazing! Thank you all soo much!

Fantastic experience: Just attended a woman’s clinic put on at ABJJ and I couldn’t have loved it more! It was so nice seeing ladies from all over the state and learning from Tessa & Dylan! I really hope they continue to host more as it is well worth the drive to come out!

"If your not having fun then you're not doing Jiu-jitsu" literally was a phrase that stuck out to me during class. I'm only here in Anchorage for a short stint but I'll be doing their weekly classes and rolls there until we leave!! Fantastic experience: I love ABJJ. I first had interactions with this crew when I signed up for my very first jujitsu tournament. I was very new to the scene and had no real direction on how to get the registration process completed and or what to expect moving forward. Coach Ryder and his team at ABJJ made themselves completely available to me even after hours using their personal numbers to help get me squared away. Every time I walk into the reception area I am met by a friendly person who despite not knowing me, treats me as if we’ve been friends for years. Fantastic experience: This is an awesome school! I’m an old hobbyist, I travel for work and have had the chance to catch a class in a dozen schools internationally and over a dozen schools in the U.S. Stayed in Anchorage on vacation got to try out this school. This school is one of the best I’ve ever seen. The instructors are high level, the facility is great, the atmosphere is cooperative without knuckleheads and egos. As an old guy I would recommend this school to anyone regardless of age or sex.

Fantastic experience: Traveled from Houston, TX and trained here for a month. Great gym culture and I really appreciated the program. We focused on a specific position and really spent time to understand specifics and nuances of techniques. I highly recommend them.

Fantastic experience: Great instruction, cleanest gym ever, dramatic improvements in strength and functional movement! The instructors and staff are amazing! Every one of them is a skilled teacher that takes time to give personal feedback even if you're a clueless beginner like myself. The facility is super clean and they are extra diligent about disinfecting between every class. My fitness has improved significantly, I have gained about 6 lbs of muscle in 4 months and just easily beat my neighbor in an arm wrestle this morning (she won the last match we had in July).☺

Fantastic experience: Came to town for a few weeks and decided to join my sister at her Muay Thai classes she's been reading about for a year. Now I wish I lived here so I could keep going! I felt very welcome by all the staff and the classes were great. I learned a ton and got an awesome workout.

Fantastic experience: If you want to sign your child up for an excellent class where they can exercise and learn self defense skills, this is it! We started going there with my 5 year old not long ago to build social skills and self esteem and I can tell already we will be there for years. First of all, the monthly price is unbeatable for a 3 day a week class! We called around to other martial arts studios before coming here and the prices are astronomical. One studio wanted $200 for uniform and $1500 prepayment for tuition! Omg. Some studios think parents are made of money. Another thing that we loved about anchorage Brazilian jujitsu is that kids can try few classes for free to see if it’s the right fit. Owners are totally cool about it! No obligation, no pressure. Other studios around charge $19 or so for a try out class, which makes it feel like all they care about is money. Anchorage Brazilian JiJitsu even give kids who are trying a class uniform for the duration of the class so kids can feel like a part of the team. There are 3 class times you can bring your kids (3,4,5 pm) whatever time fits your needs and parents can stay there to watch. There are several skilled and patient teachers during each class. This is an excellent school for kids to go to; no wonder some classes have like 40 kids in them! My child doesn’t want to do anything else anymore, all we hear is “when is jujitsu class?” His self esteem already improved and he is no longer afraid to go to a regular school in fall. Try it! It’s great!:)

Fantastic experience: I've been going to ABJJ for about a month and it's definitely a fantastic gym. I used to train mma and loved it, and tried out a few different gyms before settling on this one. It's a nice and clean facility, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and it's a great place to be at overall. If you're thinking about starting classes and haven't made the jump yet, stop by and try a couple of classes! The other practitioners are friendly to new people and will take the time to help you out if there's something you're confused about. I don't have anything negative to say, ABJJ is great and definitely worth checking out!

We have visited many gyms in our time traveling and Anchorage Bjj has been one of our favorite schools to train at thus far. Really nice/clean gym , tough team and a very welcoming atmosphere. Fantastic experience: Best gym in town, with that said, Anchored Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has done fantastic job adapting to the new environment with COVID-19. Daily they have several class offered vothnin the gym and through zoom. Classes available for training no matter where you are. Their on line library for learning is extensive. They are complying to state regulations and it is by far the cleanest gym I've ever been in! They sanitizing the mats between every class. ABJJ is going above and beyond to support students and ther training goals!! The owners Ryder & Christine along with their staff do a great great job. The trainning is top notch along with the a wide range of training partners at all levels. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: Overall, Anchorage BJJ is definitely the best martial arts academy in Alaska. Ryder and all of his instructors create a great atmosphere for learning, training preparation for competition. I have trained at many very high level schools across the country and this school is among the best. The entire family here at the academy are very friendly and welcoming; nobody is out to hurt anyone here and it is a very non intimidating environment. So no matter if your goals are to become a world champion, or just for you or your children to develop confidence and character while learning to defend yourselves, Anchorage BJJ is the place to go!

Fantastic experience: I originally started training at ABJJ years ago after training at a couple other gyms. I was immediately impressed with the instructors and humility I discovered throughout the gym. After reluctantly stepping away from training when I had children, my oldest son is now five years old and as we are homeschooling I’m excited for him to learn to be part of a team, as well as be challenged individually. I’m confident the work ethic and humility he will glean from the family at ABJJ will be lessons he holds on to for many years to come. I’m thankful for the many kids classes offered which creates a more flexible week for our lifestyle, as well as the opportunity for my son to be exposed to several different disciplines (BJJ, Boxing, etc) on the same gym membership.

Fantastic experience: Both of our kids attend class here, it’s been an awesome experience and my husband and I both enjoy watching them develop their skills every week. The instructors are awesome with kids and hold them to high standards, requiring them to pay attention through class during instruction, then giving them instruction while they practice skills with the other kids. We’ve been really happy with the decision to start them at ABJJ and the progress they’ve made in a year, looking forward to the years to come.

Fantastic experience: I have been training here for about 3 years, and I can say that ABJJ is simply the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym in the state. A very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. You don't just go to this gym to work out, you become a part of the family.

Fantastic experience: Our first time walking in we were greeted with a warm welcome. The staff was very friendly and unintimidating. She explained everything in detail and didn't pressure us all all to join. By the second class our kids names were already memorized among the already large group of 30 kids. The facility is well sized and clean with seating for plenty spectators. Pricing is very competitive and the staff is professional and knowledgable. They do active duty military and first responder discounts.

Very tough group of people and the instructors are amazing. Warm welcomes and tough rolls always. I'll be sticking around here for as long as I live in anchorage for sure!

Fantastic experience: Awesome place, family friendly, clean and prices are reasonable. All the moves of the week is on the website. It's a great tool for students to use for review or to study the moves at any time. As for gear, they have BJJ Gis on stock at all times for all sizes. That was very helpful since I have no idea where or what size I am. You can try it in before buying it. They are also partners with few local businesses in town that you get a discount just for being an ABJJ student (never been to a gym that has that extra benefit)

Fantastic experience: My daughter has attended for about 6 months and the difference is noticeable. Her fitness has increased and she is beginning to pick up the moves. I look forward to watching her grow with the sport. ABJJ is a great organization and the people there are dedicated to their work.

Fantastic experience: My 10 year old son has been attending ABJJ for just over a year and we love it there! It's the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in Anchorage. The instructors are very knowledgeable, and seem to enjoy working with the students. My son has learned so much in the short time he has been going there. And he is progressing quickly. They also do not just hand out belts. You have to earn your belt promotion and show real dedication and progress. And that in itself is a very valuable lesson for the students.

Fantastic experience: I like that they have a free trial. They even let you borrow Gi for your trial day. Very clean and welcoming gym. Perfect for all beginners all the way to advance. All the instructors are very helpful. Great for athletes and also very family friendly school.

Fantastic experience: ABJJ has an excellent kid's program. My son (5) loves it! He has been working toward a new belt. I like that he is learning delayed gratification and working toward long term goals. He is able to listen quietly and follow multi-step directions; a huge improvement from when we started!

Fantastic experience: We love the kids classes here! It just the right amount of time and well structured! There are a lot of instructors to help the kids. My son is 5 years old and he loves it. He also takes the boxing class Friday evenings and he loves that, too! The classes keep the kids moving. My son has improved so much since we started here and he talks about both classes (BJJ and boxing) all the time. Definitely recommend!
