Hangar 5: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Hanger 5 is one of those hidden gems that makes you glad you stopped in. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Girdwood, it’s a great spot to relax, grab a beer, and enjoy some seriously good food. The vibe is laid-back and welcoming—perfect for kicking back after a day outdoors. On the day I visited, the specials were on point—creative, fresh, and a fun twist on familiar favorites. It’s always a good sign when a restaurant puts thought into their daily offerings, and Hanger 5 absolutely nailed it. One thing I really appreciated: the flexibility with sides. I ordered tacos and was able to sub in French fries instead of the usual chips—something small, but it really made the meal feel more customized. And let’s be honest, sometimes you just want fries. The beer selection was solid, and the staff were friendly without being overbearing. All in all, Hanger 5 is the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer than planned. I’ll definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Good place to get a hit workout in
Fantastic experience: Absolutely LOVE this place. As with any of the Awesome JBER fitness centers - if members paid to keep WiFi, that would be icing on the cake. I would, personally, pay a small fee to have WiFi to access training apps and music.
Fantastic experience: Great indoor gym with track. Has pretty much everything you need, from cardio to lifting
Fantastic experience: Great staff
Positive experience: Its ideal for service members in need of a quick routine, don’t go during rush hours and clean equipment before use. Besides that super convenient.
Positive experience: Its ideal for service members in need of a quick routine, don’t go during rush hours and clean equipment before use. Besides that super convenient.
Positive experience: Doesn't have cable machines but it has everything else
Negative experience: This place needs to be mowed down. The only reason why it's up is the fact that there's history under it and pt test are held there. We have two other gyms, let's use them and renovate h5 for the better good.
Fantastic experience: Everything one needs to have a great workout. Don't forget to bring proof of your COVID-19 Vaccination.
Positive experience: Running sucks in here I felt like I was suffocating. Other than that good equipment and lots of space.
Fantastic experience: I take PT tests here.
Fantastic experience: Lots of cute women go here but besides that pretty good gym
Fantastic experience: Great selection of crossfit style equipment.
Fantastic experience: Finally!!!! Great work JBER! Its slowly opening up!
Fantastic experience: Great place to prep for that PT test.
Fantastic experience: Everything you need for a great workout coupled with an environment to motivate the mindset of a servicemember. The main portion of the gym is completely open so you can see and hear everyone working out which might be the next best thing to reach your PR's. Mostly crossfit oriented equipment but with free weights, machines, and a ninja course, you'd be hard pressed to find a reason not to go here. The main gym area is surrounded with a track that's 8 laps for a mile with comfortably wide turns to train for your next PT test. Sleds, boxes, tires, squat racks, pullup bars, TRX equipment, treadmills, wall balls, Jacob's ladders, and a ninja course.. I mean, come on.. at least check it out.. Pretty legit.
Positive experience: Eh, if you like body weights and running i suppose you could come here. Otherwise, just go to Elmendorf fitness center.
Positive experience: Good facility. Had everything I need for a workout.
Positive experience: There weren't any planes just a bunch of sweaty people
Positive experience: I give FIP 1 outta 5 stars
Fantastic experience: Open 24hrs I love this place
Fantastic experience: Convenient indoor track
Fantastic experience: Take my kids here to run the track and cross fit
Fantastic experience: I hate running !
Fantastic experience: Lots of equipment, 24Hr access, decently clean. Can’t complain, only downside is it’s a bit chilly sometimes, but welcome to Alaska.
Fantastic experience: midnight swole on.
Negative experience: Place is not cleaned enough. Air is moisturized but smells like death.
Positive experience: There's very little equipment but for cardio, this is a good option in the middle of an Alaskan Winter
Fantastic experience: Large, old hangar converted into a gym. Has an indoor track, and wide range of equipment and workout space. Rowers, tire flipping, ropes, several types of racks and even a battle rig.
Fantastic experience: Converting a hangar to a 24 hour gym with an indoor track was one of the best things this post had done.
Fantastic experience: Love working out here. Especially during winter months. Don't like the gyms or memberships requirements from places like planet fitness? Free workouts here with all the equipment you could ask for. Check it out!
Fantastic experience: I love this place.
Fantastic experience: Big boy / big girl rules type of a gym
Fantastic experience: Great memories happened here!
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out without other people interrupting you
Fantastic experience: Loved it great CrossFit spot
Fantastic experience: Lots of room to Run, Lift, Carry, and whatever else you want.
Hello Wesley, thank you for your review!
Fantastic experience: I didnt know hangar 5 was going to be a location to rate lol. But since is it is.....i give it 5 stars its free, its clean, and its a track you can run in during the winter.
Thanks, Andy! We are glad you've enjoyed our facility. We hope to see you again soon.
Positive experience: I love it here.... but they should add a tumble track accessible to all who come..#gymnastlife
Positive experience: If you're into crossfit or want an indoor place to run, this is probably a really good gym for you. It's basically useless for most other things.
Fantastic experience: Would run again
Fantastic experience: Great gym and the base has been working on the air quality. It can be a bit tough to run on the track when there's not a good flow of air going. For all the weight lifting people they have plenty of new equipment for you peeps. It's always a pretty active gym between the Army doing unit workouts and the Air Force running their PT tests there. There is a smaller room with aerobic machines if you don't want to be out in the middle of the hangar. There are cubbies on the women's locker room and about three showers. Theres also a water fountain outside of the bathroom door if you need to fill up water bottles.
Fantastic experience: Love that its 24 hrs.
Fantastic experience: Great CrossFit gym open 24/7
Fantastic experience: For the devoted minimalist.
Fantastic experience: 24 hours. Lots of equipment to use in the side rooms and the big open gym is great
Fantastic experience: Great gym, plenty of equipment
Fantastic experience: Great gym on base that is usually open and relatively uncrowded. If you are into cross fit, check this place out
Fantastic experience: Great gym, plenty of equipment
Positive experience: Could have better variety.
Positive experience: New equipment came in a week ago, keep improving!
Positive experience: Great if you enjoy CrossFit
Negative experience: If you test on this track, there's an 80% chance you'll get Hangar Lung at least until the next day.
Negative experience: The air here will dry out your soul. Sometimes they turn on little water prayers but it doesn’t seem to humidify the air as much as make puddles and drips.
Positive experience: Good place. Multi use gym. Also has an 'Artic CrossFit' there. They meet m-f @ 5:30. And m,w,f at 11:30. Good people.
Positive experience: Very dusty environment. At least 3 people I know complain about their allergies after a run in here. Air quality should be sampled at times. 24hr access is great though...
Positive experience: I like the gym itself it's really handy. I haven't noticed anything about the air quality but I took my daughter there and she couldn't stop sneezing, she's 4 so she's not pretending because of a pt test. Maybe my old lungs are just used to it. Probably something wrong with the air there, but it's fine for me
Positive experience: Has a decent amount of equipment, indoor track and is open 24 hours. Since it's in an old hanger, the air is hard to breathe. If your just going for the equipment or a light jog around the track I would recommend, but for sprints or long distance I would discourage using this track.
Fantastic experience: Home to Arctic CrossFit
Fantastic experience: Dirty, crossfit-focused, a bit dusty, alllll fun!
Fantastic experience: Decent gym but not much equipment unless your a cross fit nut
Fantastic experience: I love it there. Even at 2 in the morning
Positive experience: It's a 24 hr military gym with no staff
Positive experience: Good space to run and workout or crossfit. Track does close at odd hours though for pt tests.
Positive experience: This should be the only place for Air Force PT testing to ensure all tests are as statistically reproduceable as possible.
Fantastic experience: Decent gym but not much equipment unless your a cross fit nut
Positive experience: I may bet nitpicking, but this facilities air is just bugging me. It has everything that I love in a exercising and work-out facility but the air is comparable to The Dome. But I can just get pass that fact and say this facility is very convenient being 24/7 and has good equipment!
Positive experience: Large and hot. Super dry air inside. It has a track in which 12 laps is 1.5 miles. Not much for other equipment here though, very basic.
Positive experience: Hanger 5 has everything you need for a great work out including a two hundred meter track crossfit gear free weights and a limited selection of machines.
Positive experience: This barebones gym's 24/7 status means you always have time to fit it in your schedule. If your self motivated, plenty of free weights abound, but there are limited weight machines and cardio options outside rowing machines and the track. The gym also has limited climate control, so be ready to feel a bit of the outside inside.
Positive experience: It's 24/7, so that's pretty great considering the occasionally weird hours of the other two gyms. A pretty large indoor track, all things considering. Sparse equipment and a high amount of traffic, mostly CrossFit emphasis and workouts encouraged. Lots of issues with air quality, and the shower area leaves a lot to be desired. Bring shower shoes for sure.
