Negative experience: Fee, after fee after fee. Very deceiving, signed up 3 months ago. They charged me an annual fee when i just got my membership 3 months ago? I signed up for 56 dollar a month. All my bank statements add up to 306 for 4 months. Thats $77.00 dollars month. Very deceiving crooks. Well played Genesis!!! Look at the picture I added they have 78 dollars crossed out like I’m really getting a deal. But it still averages 78 dollars a month. I can’t tell you how deceiving the sign up process is.

Negative experience: I attended this gym regularly for 3 years and it was always a 5/10 facility wise. Things took forever to get fixed, and in general things were not cleaned well. Other members here are great, but there are many better options in the area for the insane amount of money they want for a membership. I probably would've rated the gym 3 stars before I tried to cancel my membership. When I signed up, they told me I could cancel anytime without a problem, no contract type deal. When I tried to cancel they informed me that I had agreed to give at least 30 days notice to cancel. This is purely a money grabbing scheme. They want one more monthly payment out of you before you leave. No other subscription has this type of '30 day' cancellation policy. It's clearly just a money grab. When discussing this with the staff they told me that I should have 'taken care of my responsibilities' before cancelling, which was both rude and insulting. There is no good reason besides profit margins to force members to give 30 days notice on a 'cancel anytime' membership. It is unethical and I would recommend others stay away from Genesis when looking for a gym in the area.

Fantastic experience: Genesis Health Club on Merle Hay is exactly the place you've been looking for. Staff is very attentive and the place is sparkling clean. They have all the equipment you could possibly need for the serious lifter and an environment that's very welcoming for anyone new to the gym. My son and I were staying in Des Moines up from Oklahoma for a ball tournament and needed a place to workout for the week. Could not have asked for better hospitality and convenience. If we lived in the area, 100% this would be our home gym. Have lifted regularly for years and I would highly recommend to anyone regardless of fitness level.

Positive experience: Works within your budget for personal trainers, and has a great variety of classes included in the membership. There is a contract if you don't pay the non contract price which is difficult to get out of if in a tough spot, but the manager is very understanding and tries to do what he can to help.

Fantastic experience: My go to location! Has everything I need and it's spaced out nicely, not jammed packed or overcrowded. Staff is always friendly. The manager Steve is great, makes sure to greet you every time.!

Fantastic experience: This is my favorite gym, the classes are great and my personal trainer is the best PT I have had. The best thing I like about this site is that, no matter were you are out in your health journey, the staff and instructors treat you like you matter. I love seeing all ages and sizes in the gym, because you are able to go in and get the workout you need without feeling self couscous.

Fantastic experience: After a failed attempt to transfer our membership at the Mills Civic Genesis, Steve at the Meryl Hay location made the transfer seamless and easy. He got it done in minutes with only a 5 minute wait! Kudos to Steve and his staff for exceptional customer service. I can understand why this location is my husband’s FAVORITE!

Negative experience: No eye protection for tanning beds that are included in the membership fee, rude staff, and if you want to cancel membership you have to get a new debit card, even if you go in the gym to cancel.

Fantastic experience: Out of all the DSM area gyms I've been to, this one is the best, even amongst the other Genesis locations. The hours are great. It's the same people working who I see every time. They are always professional. This gym does a great job having large scale and well maintained equipment but not being a "factory" place that can be copy pasted anywhere. Easily the most comfortable gym I've been to. Bonus that I can say in over a year that no guy has ever been creepy or sleepy to me here.

Positive experience: Couldn’t finish the 3 day personal training because Trevor Campbell wasn’t the most comforting instructor, he would laugh when I do something wrong, and called my clothes “goofy” didn’t know a 16 year old had to show up to a gym looking like Kim kardashian but I guess.. you wanna buy me some new clothes trevor? His ego was clearly too high, I was excited to start getting into the gym but was scared to get judged, he made me feel judged. Started going to the urbandale gym even though Merle hay is only 5 minutes away due to these awkward interactions lol. Anyways other than the gym being overpriced I think it’s a pretty decent gym, once I get good at working out I’ll probably switch over to a cheaper gym.

Negative experience: I visited for a tour about 2 weeks ago. It's the former Aspen Fitness, but without the lower-priced plans. Since going for the tour, this place has called me daily, several times a day. If you go here, be prepared for some aggressive marketing and salesmanship. "What can I do to get you to buy this gym membership today? I'll need to speak with my manager. That Tru-coat...they put that on at the factory. We can't sell it without the Tru-coat."

Fantastic experience: Has become a daily staple for us. I'm down 25lbs since last fall, my son gets to play safely with other kids and loves the kids room morning staff, perfect for me so I can work out with no worries. Everyone is very welcoming and it's always very clean!

Grant and Garrett I’ve had the pleasure of working with since I signed up about 2 months ago. I’m a 58 year old man just trying to get a little of my mojo back and this gym has been everything I’ve needed to help me meet my goals!!

Fantastic experience: I have really enjoyed my time at this gym. I switched from Planet Fitness about a month ago, and I have to say, the upgrade was well worth it. The staff is very friendly, the equipment offers more variety than what I was used to, and I like the added benefits of the sauna, which has been really helpful for my recovery. If you are new to working out and don't know where to start, Genesis offers friendly Fitness Advisors who can assist you in training, dieting advice, or information on pricing. This is a perfect place for new gym goers. Honestly, I cant say enough good things about this gym. If you are looking for a gym with quality equipment, a friendly staff, and some nice benefits over a typical gym, then I would highly recommend you to try out Genesis.

Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed my experience at this Genesis location. There is a good atmosphere (not excessively busy, good membership, clean) and I liked the selection of equipment. The sauna is huge. Although they don't allow you to put water onto the element, it is hot enough that it isn't a problem. Some gyms have saunas that don't feel hot enough, but this one did. This is definitely the best gym in the Urbandale area. Memberships are a little higher than average, but it's worth it if you're serious about your fitness.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to Genesis on Merle Hay for a couple months now. Great club. Lots of options. My trainer, Trevor is awesome and has taught me a lot! I’ve been making great strides towards my goals with Trevor’s recommendations and evolution of exercises. It’s not usually packed and typically you can get to any machine type you need. Great location for my commute from work to home.

Fantastic experience: I am a member of Genesis Merle Hay and it is the place where I enjoy my workouts as well as meet with friends. My trainer, Grant Petersen, is awesome. He teaches me to exercise safely and encourages me to become my best self! The staff at Genesis treats me like family and I enjoy sharing healthy treats, healthy coffee drinks and protein drinks with the staff. I feel safe working out at Genesis Merle Hay as the staff wears face coverings for my protection as well as provides supplies to keep the equipment clean and safe for all to use. Genesis Merle Hay is kept clean by dedicated staff members for the client’s safety. The trainers are excellent and well educated in the needs of physical activity for people of all fitness levels. There are many activities offered to keep members and guests physically active like Boot Camp, challenges and online classes for those that like to workout at home. It a pleasure to keep physically fit at Genesis Merle Hay with all of the opportunities to workout like training and boot camps as well as a variety of equipment for people of all fitness levels. Fantastic experience: I’ve been to 3 Genesis health clubs so far and this club is head and shoulders above the rest. First off it’s clean, like sparking cleaning, the guy cleaning the bathroom cares about his work and it shows. Not sure when it was last update, but it looks and feels much new compared to the Hickman and West Des Moines clubs. It also has a friendlier vibe which is contagious. Each club has a unique feature, this club has lots of space, it’s well organized, everything is on 1 level, absolutely love how large the sauna is and how hot it gets. It’s 10 minutes out of the way for me, but it’s worth the extra drive in my eyes. I want to give a shout out to the managers & staff who clean and keep the place organized, they combined have kept this facility functioning at an elite level.

Negative experience: I was a former member at Gold's Gym in West Des Moines before it closed. All members at that gym were informed their membership would transfer over to a Genesis Health Club at their current monthly membership price. I went to a Genesis Gym to get signed up and what not. They told me that they couldn't find my information and was not allowed to join at my Golds price. I showed them all of my Gold's material but they said it didn't matter. They then tried to sell me on their membership prices which were significantly higher than what I was promised. They said they would look into it after I told them I wasn't joining at their prices. I haven't heard back from them. I sent multiple emails and voicemails but never received a response. Do not go to this gym.

Fantastic experience: I've recommended this gym several times. I only go to gyms where people go to work out! Come here if you want to feel comfortable whole working out! The staff is fantastic!

Negative experience: Would not recommend women to sign up for a membership here. My friend was harassed by a man here and when brought to the attention of management she was ridiculed and dismissed. The owner obviously only cares about money and not the safety of ALL gym-goers.

Negative experience: This gym does not care about its female patrons! My friend was being harassed there and when she brought it up to the manager, he completely dismissed it and sided with the creep who was harassing her. Ladies if you’re reading this, think twice before going to this gym because the employees there DO NOT care about your safety.

Positive experience: Membership cancelation process is outdated/burdensome. I called to cancel because I moved and purchased a home gym. They said that I could not cancel over the phone and required me to come in person. Went in and it turned out they just needed my signature confirming my cancelation. Seems unnecessary- verbal confirmation or e-signature should suffice. Outside of that, I was happy with facility and equipment.
