Our comment from FitFit United States about Midtown Sports and Wellness:

Midtown Sports and Wellness, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, offers a variety of amenities and services for fitness enthusiasts, making it a popular choice among locals. The gym features spacious workout areas, a decent pool, group fitness classes, and recovery amenities such as saunas and steam rooms. Many users appreciate the friendly staff and the welcoming atmosphere of the club. Notable amenities include:

  • Accessibility to five Sports and Wellness locations.
  • Private steam rooms and co-ed sauna.
  • A clean environment with friendly staff.
  • A range of equipment options to accommodate various fitness needs.
  • Group classes and personal training services from knowledgeable trainers.

However, some members have noted areas needing improvement, including:

  • Maintenance and updating of equipment.
  • Inconsistent customer service experiences with management.
  • Cleanliness concerns raised about locker rooms and showers.
  • High membership fees compared to other gyms in the area.

Overall, while Midtown Sports and Wellness is appreciated for its welcoming atmosphere and extensive offerings, there is a recognition of the need for updates and improvements to maintain its reputation as a top gym in the area.

Negative experience: I am Canadian visitor who comes to Albuquerque two to three times a year. I usually always use public pools to do lap swimming but I found out about this facility that is only 10 minutes from my hotel. I called several times to be able to find out if I can use the facility but the front desk could not answer my questions in regards to payment and membership and they directed me to come in to meet with a membership sales person. It was only a 10 minute walk so I came in in the hopes that I can figure something out to use the pool. I was only in Albuquerque for the week this time. The facility looked very big and clean however it was very busy at 9 AM. An older woman came down to meet me after a five minute wait. I noticed she looked at me up-and-down. Then I explained to her that I wanted to use the lap pool only for the week to do swimming. She proceeded to say this is a members only exclusive club and they do not welcome walk-ins. She kept on repeating the word exclusive. This made me feel like an outsider who was not welcomed. Then I tried to ask her what her yearly rates were and she did not really want to elaborate as at that point she pretty much was telling me to go. She did inform me that there was a $30 a day pass but that could only be used for one day. The pool is outdoors and it is at 83°F. Apparently people use it all year long no matter how cold it gets in the winter. I am sure this would’ve been a great facility but my experience going there was not great. Even if they would’ve allowed me to use the facility, I think it would’ve been way too crowded for me. But this review really reflects on how that sales woman Dash staff member treated me.The way the sales woman dealt with me was disgusting. At some point she looked at my earrings and asked me if I made them myself? To which I answered no, I purchased them during a three month trip to Vietnam. I almost felt like she was trying to judge me on my social class. I am considered upper class high income earner but maybe my clothes were not nice enough for her? and how ironic that a sales woman judges a person who earns 10 times more than her! If we’re going to go down that route, she should learn how to humble herself. Would I recommend this place to residents of Albuquerque? No I wouldn’t. It’s a shame when wellness, well-being and community becomes a judgemental sales pitch. Unless you’re someone who is exclusive and thinks you’re better than others then maybe you should go here. As for me, I am glad they refused me because I would not want to spend my tourist dollars in a place like this. In the entire 57 countries that I’ve visited this is the first time I’ve actually been turned away from using a pool. Shame on you midtown Sports and wellness! Learn to train your sales staff to have manners and courtesy.

Fantastic experience: Love love Mike the manager. So accommodating. Great all around family gym!

Fantastic experience: Just wanted to commend Adriana who was working the front desk today. She went above and beyond in helping me find a lost phone right before closing.

Negative experience: Just drove 40min to workout with a child care reservation, just to be told they are closed, when I walked into the child care area. Yet there were atleast 3 staff members in there with 2-3 kids. When I asked the front desk what the deal was, I was told it was closed due to there not being any reservations 2 hours prior. Why am I paying extra every month then! Update- they called to elaborate that they send people home when nobody is using child care. Still doesn’t change the fact that someone should be available at all time, that are stated they will be open to provide those services, they charge for.

Fantastic experience: I have been a member since 1986 and the club just keeps getting better with customer service, courteous staff, clean showers, dressing room, pool & hot tub. I appreciate how it feels like a community and I appreciate Nell who always accommodates me whenever I need something. Nell and your staff are always very caring & compassionate. Thank you!

Negative experience: “Kaya” is just part of the problem. She was rude and offered no solutions. We simply wanted to drop me off of my wife’s account as I work out elsewhere. My wife (as the primary account holder) has attempted to do this several times over the last two months. She followed the suggested steps but apparently not taken seriously as she is female. BEWARE! This company will NEVER stop charging your card and will NOT give you a way to cancel a membership. Looking forward to a phone call from the manager. Time will tell if that actually happens.

Fantastic experience: Midtown Spirts and Wellness is great. They have a large weight room, pool, sauna, and studio fitness classes-both in person or online. Also racket sports, treadmills, and stair climber machines. I have had really good success with personal training-I highly recommend Isaiah. Fitness classes with Ruth are also fantastic. The women’s locker room is clean, has showers, hair dryers, lotion, q tips, tissues etc. Day use lockers are available. Come in for a tour-my friend brought me here two years ago and I’m really glad she did.

Negative experience: Was ok with the actual facilities. Good classes. Parking is not great at this location. One star for the membership cancellation experience. Basically they make it as difficult as possible. I moved out of state and when I called this location to cancel, the guy working the front desk couldn't do anything (like usual) said a manager would contact me. I get the email to fill out a cancellation form (annoying I even have to do that) and learned they require one months notice and force you into paying an extra month. As I am no longer in New Mexico, I can't use the membership I am paying for. Another annoyance is they do not let their front desk staff do ANYTHING. No membership stuff, cancellation stuff, and they do not trust them with the lost and found. For the money we pay to be members, I would expect better customer service. This business is as shady as it gets.

Negative experience: Currently looking for a new gym in this area. Went to their website. Instead of being like most gyms that somewhat respect your time and post pricing information for memberships, these folks don't appear to be that way. No prices listed for the memberships. I don't have the time or patience to fill out a long ass form and then wait around for a call back (which I don't want in the first place). I'm pretty certain there will be numerous call backs too. Just post the price like normal people. Ain't nobody got time for BS games! I'll go elsewhere.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello and thank you for reaching out. We have many variables that impact our pricing including corporate partnership discounts. It would be unfair of us to provide you with a price if you qualify for a lower rate. Thank you for understanding.

Fantastic experience: Best gym in ABQ, hands down. Midtown Sports & Wellness has everything you could ask for — clean facilities, top-notch equipment, and a great atmosphere. The staff is always friendly and professional, and the trainers really know their stuff. I especially love the variety of group fitness classes and the fact that there is a brand new deck for their swimming pool and hot tub. Whether you’re lifting, swimming, doing yoga, or just getting some cardio in, this place has it all. Super clean locker rooms too. Definitely recommend if you’re serious about your fitness or just looking for a supportive place to start.

Fantastic experience: Oh Midtown, where do I start? I have grown up in the S&W clubs and love all of them because each location is completely unique, but Midtown has my heart and soul. For 10 years I swam in the summer swim team league and made impeccable friendships and memories that will last my lifetime, and developed a most important life skill. Since then, Midtown has continued to be my safe haven for working out, I know the weight floor like the back of my hand and always feel comfortable and safe. The outdoor pool alone makes for the best summer Saturday afternoon hangout. The members and community are always positive. Anytime I work out I always see a friendly face whether that be staff or my other gym friends, making it hard to ever have a bad workout. I can’t wait to see the new pool deck so I can continue making more memories poolside.

Fantastic experience: I am grateful for Midtown, which has been my consistent routine for several years. It is comforting when I walk in and everyone knows my name and greets me with a smile. I have utilized the expertise of a personal trainer, Mariam, who has helped me get my strength and health back on track. I will forever be thankful for her guidance and care. Mariam, you are the best! The staff here are what make it special. A big shout out to supervisor Olga, who is always available. I am impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and the equipment that I use. I do look forward to a newly refreshed pool, hot tubs this coming summer. Love Midtown for all that it has to offer. I highly recommend. Thank you!

Fantastic experience: I've been a member for many years. Thru those years the staff have always had a smile. When I needed reciprocity in Colorado, the got it for me. They are great! The trainers are first class. I had a few over the years, mostly changed due to the trainer moving. I have never had a trainer I have disliked. They are competent, helpful, even if one is not their client. I'm in the best shape I've been in for years. The equipment is varied up to date, and is routinely kept in good shape.....in short a great place for keeping in shape.

Fantastic experience: I think that the best gift my husband ever got me was a Sports and Wellness membership. The best gift I ever got myself was personal training with Derrick. Over the last year, his expertise, guidance, and friendship have helped me completely overhaul my body and my mind. Are you scared to go to the gym? Ask for Derrick. Want to lose weight and not sure how? Ask for Derrick. Not sure how to shape your body or use all that equipment? Ask for Derrick. Think you'll be judged? (I did too, and I promise you won't, but ask for Derrick anyway, because you won't regret it.) Look, the facilities are everything you need in a gym, but the people are what make it special. I've seen reviews saying that the women are mean in the locker room (and I was terrified to go int here) but I am here to tell you that all of the compliments my mom never gave me have been made up for by the wonderful women that will surround you in this welcoming environment - the dudes are super sweet too! DERRICK - you're the best! All the kids at the desk - tons of love to all of you too! Thank you from the depths of my soul - B.

Negative experience: TLDR: Do not join here. They’re incentivizing/ paying members for reviews… Notice how all the recent reviews are in the same recent 2 week period? they can’t get honest reviews so they raffle away a cheap tshirt or something to buy them This place is a dump. $120/ month per person and they never fix anything. The entire facility is falling apart including machines. Tonight, the seat on the shoulder raise machine just fell off, bringing my jaw down on the machine and I nearly bit my lip off, blood everywhere. It’s just not worth the money. Crunch fitness is $10/ a month and 2 blocks away. The equipment and crowding is better at Crunch. Lockers are all broken and you get locked out, sauna is broken at least 3 times a month, place is dirty and surfaces are sticky, gym floor is at 70+ degrees year round- it’s like working out in a sauna. I thought this spot would shape up after their fired the awful manager recently but, alas, nothing has changed and it’s actually gotten worse. Save your cash and a lawsuit for bodily injury and avoid this place.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

UPDATE: We’re sorry to see these comments about your experience, but I can assure you we’ve made strides with equipment, cleanliness and billing, and continue to aim to do better every day. It would be helpful to know how long you’ve been a member and when you last visited us. Is there any chance we can connect in person or on the phone? Let’s try this: on your next visit, please ask to speak with a member of management so we can promptly address your concerns.

Hello, Sean~ Thank you for reaching out. As an organization, we would welcome any concerns, especially when it comes to machine issues to be directed immediately to front desk or manager staff. With fluctuations in during winter and summer months our thermostats are regulated automatically.

Negative experience: Horrible upper management, greedy, and poor customer service.

K G 8 months ago

Negative experience: Whenever you go to a Sports and Wellness location, you'll have questions. Will my machine work? Will the wet area be dirty? Will the steam room be down? How many showers are still out of order since 2020? One thing you'll never need to question -- will my dues go up? Of course! Hopefully one day a LA Fitness or other similar chain will come in and we'll finally have a good, premium option in ABQ. Until then, we'll suffer through S&W grossly overcharging us for free towels and mediocre experiences.

Xavier Lucero 8 months ago

Negative experience: Open Times & No Suggestion Box: - ABQ is small, requiring only 2 early locations to fulfill this requirement. Weekend open times are terrible; 7 am is too late for an expensive membership. - Extreme reviews may be due to the lack of a suggestion box.

Negative experience: Why have a scanner on the front desk if it is not used? We asked to get cards to scan in instead of waiting in line everytime we arrive. and they said no, use your phone. Not Everyone works out with a phone. More people do have their car keys with them though. Customer service lacking here.

Brodie Rae 11 months ago

Negative experience: I’ve been a member here for about 20 years. That said, if I didn’t need a swimming pool, I would’ve left long ago. I would discourage anyone from joining if they care about modern/maintained equipment. It’s stunning how old some of their machines are and, somehow, they have managed to replace pieces with even WORSE stuff. They brought in new treadmills a year ago that they celebrated with balloons and everything. They are so obnoxiously loud that they’re nearly impossible to use …. and the TV on them doesn’t work either. Seriously? The club also severely reduced what made it special — far fewer classes now, and they no longer provide hand towel service for people working out. The women’s locker rooms are also low-end, with showers that don’t drain well and grimy looking tile. I appreciate the cleaning staff — I even continued to pay when dues were optional during the pandemic shutdown to support staff — and the shortcomings are in no way their fault. But this place charges a premium price WAAAAAY above other local gyms without providing a premium experience.

Peter Christensen 1 year ago

Negative experience: Understand that this gym is owned by a faceless corporation in Colorado who buys clubs only to double the price. Your local YMCA has all new equipment, and charges 1/3 of the price. Unless you need a pool, there is zero reason to go here.

Dionte Hardin 1 year ago

Negative experience: I never really write a review about anything, but I feel like this needs to be said. I've been going to this gym for almost three years now, and three different times, Sport and Wellness has charged me $500 each time. At this point, I really think they do this purposely to get a cash grab from people. Also, rather than telling me someone I'm one month behind, they wait five months to tell you that you are behind. At this point, I find it very unprofessional and unethical. I wouldn't expect this from a place like this. At this point, what am I paying for? This is not a cheap place to attend. I expect more out of a place like this. I have no words for a place like this, and I've given Sport and Wellness patience. Not anymore.

Negative experience: worst gym in albuquerque. i cancelled my membership and they are still billing me for September because they said they left it available for me. they have old machines es and close at horrible hours.

Lisa Joy 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: More than 10 years since having an active gym, specifically, Sports and Wellness membership; with their 5 locations, Midtown fit perfectly into my Sunday evening route. The club and pool open till 8p with private steam room in both women's and men's locker room, co-ed sauna - I was effortlessly welcomed and assisted with great care by Logan, the front desk young lady on staff that evening. Super friendly, and accommodating! Quiet non-intrusive co-ed members, I had the perfect time unwinding and checking in with my body and mind.

Negative experience: I hired a personal trainer there, her name is Ana Watson, she was very unreliable when it comes to keeping her appointments she constantly cancelled and showed up late to our sessions. Then in March she cheated me out of a half hour session and tried doing it again in April. I put in a complaint last month to see if Ana Watson broke our agreement and so far management has failed to remedy this situation.

Positive experience: I’d say 3.75. The one complaint I have is that they are very slow to repair broken equipment. Some of this could be an inability to obtain parts which may not be their fault. What is inexcusable however is that I have reported at least six times that one of the stair masters is about to crash and I feel sorry for the person who is in it when it does. I’ve told them over and over for at least a month and still. I will say that it is very clean, and that the staff are wonderful overall.

Positive experience: Nice and big with a lot to offer. However, the showers had hair stuck on the floor and the steamroom had a layer of dirt on the walls. I don't think this place gets cleaned very often.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello Portia, Thank you for your review. Although we feel our housekeeping staff does a fantastic job keeping up with club cleanliness, there may be times or days you are visiting where our locker rooms need more attention. Please call me directly at the Midtown club 505.888.4811 or stop by my office this week to provide more detail on your experience so we can make improvements for all members.

Aracely Vizcaino 1 year ago

Negative experience: Bella Tizol did not let me even look at the gym after I signed up for the complementary trail. Kayla greeted me after i was standing there for a while. I feel I was racially profiled and because of my appearance I was not welcomed. If you’re brown and tattooed do not come here. I was really considering a membership as I could take advantage of a discount with my Prime insurance and workout with my friend here, but was treated like I was going to rob the place. Again I WOULD be interested in a membership, what I was not interested is dealing with a rude unprofessional individual.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Aracely, There was definitely some miscommunication here. The very short version of this story is that we do not allow non-members to use the club. On virtually an hourly basis, we have people try to come in and use the club that are not members and even going so far as to try to gain access to the club by using someone else’s membership card. We only have one criteria for allowing club usage – you have to be a member. We welcome anyone who is interested in becoming a member to do so. All shapes, sizes, genders, races, tattoos, piercings, etc. yes, everyone! So, for anyone interested in considering membership, we merely ask that you set up a time to meet with a membership representative so we can make sure we set aside time for you and so you don’t have to wait.

Negative experience: I got a three day pass from the downtown center, and am told it works for all the locations. However, when I tried the midtown location, it would not except my pass. very frustrating since the downtown one is not open on the weekends.

Sean Pluemer 1 year ago

Negative experience: I recently called to inquire about signing up, and got a very bad vibe about it. They will not disclose pricing without being in person. I told them I am currently out of town, and was met with "Well that's not going to work... how are you going to go to the gym if u cant show up?" I dont know... each time I have been there something felt very off for this gym.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello Sean, Thank you for your review. Sports and Wellness is a Members Only club with varying package pricing. If you have plans to visit Albuquerque in the upcoming future, we will happily set you up with club tour at the location of your choice and review pricing options with you then.

Sarah Buttram 1 year ago

Negative experience: I had never been overly enthusiastic about this gym, but it wasn’t as busy as some others so I kept going. That was until I found a convicted child predator there! This gym has children as members and chose to protect the criminal over the kids! The management chooses to neglect the safety of the children of many for the membership of one felon.

Sabrina Farah 1 year ago

Negative experience: Equipment is limited and old. Tons of teenagers that stand around equipment. They DID have volleyball on Thursdays for adults and have taken that away… they are going to lose a lot of members because of this. Just overall not the quality of gym it should be considering the price people pay to be a member. They have now increased their prices for all current members on top of all mentioned… cant get any worse. Super disappointed. Update since a couple of weeks: S&W did work with us for volleyball! They have replaced quite a few of the machines but for some reason some of them are still out of order. There are still teenagers that stand around and do nothing but hog machines. Lets see if they continue to improve in the new year with our monthly payment increase. It would be nice if they upgraded the volleyball and basketball equipment. (Like a new VB net without duct tape and holes)

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello Sabrina, Your review comes at good time, as we have just received eight new cardio units this past Thursday! We are excited at the addition to our cardio room and HIT studio and look forward to showcasing several improvements in 2024. As for the change in the volleyball schedule, we are not removing Thursday or Saturday pickup games. The only temporary change to volleyball is the removal of Tuesday evenings. If you have additional questions regarding the temporary change, our General Manager, Susan Nagel always has her door open. thank you!

Negative experience: I cancelled my membership before September 1st and I still got charged $117 this month for October do not do business with these people they do not care about your situations in life all they care about is getting their money it's ridiculous for the pricing! They won't ever discuss prices over the phone because they like to make you go in person and try to upsell you! Honestly super upset at this these are such hard times yet these people don't care take your business else where! Defenitly not worth the price and they don't value their customers!

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Alicia~ In reviewing your membership account, it looks like your dues for September were charged in October because your credit card declined when we did September billing and those dues were still owed. We waived the $25 decline fee. You used our childcare services nearly everyday in August and September. In addition, we did honor your cancellation after 2 months when our membership commitment states a 3 month minimum. We hope this clears up any confusion. Thank you!

Negative experience: Liberty Gym is right next door, sign up there! I bought into a membership around May or June and have regretted it pretty much ever since. When you come in to check out the gym the manager talks everything up and makes it seem great (obviously, right?). One of the big reasons I signed up was because of the big locker room and shower space since I have to workout early in the morning before work. I soon learned the regular morning crowd has a few older women who love to talk loudly about the younger women who work in their office every single morning. Annoying but whatever, I started to ignore it by putting my headphones in but said women tend to treat younger women in the locker room in an off and odd way so it’s just uncomfortable. Not only that but as I’ve been here I’ve unfortunately also learned that much of the cardio equipment is either very outdated or broken! The sauna has also been broken for some time now. I really don’t understand where my 80 dollars/ month is going. I would go to a different location but they are too far from me and it’s inconvenient. When I called to kindly explain my dissatisfaction and see what I could do to end my one year membership early there was zero flexibility. I was told I could use the family locker room but when I said I would be much happier if I could just get out of my membership and go to another gym I was given no option. So now I’m stuck paying 80 dollars per month for six more months on a gym that is straight out of the 80’s. Do not sign up here. There are other options in town with much more understanding and compassion and also up to date equipment, as it should be right?

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Stephanie and thank you for reaching out. You mention you would like to get out of your commitment. When joining, you had the option of selecting month-to-month or going with a 12-month commitment, you chose the 12-month option, so that does limit your options. We do have certain criteria in which you can get out of your agreement. Please contact the club or our Membership Accounting team for assistance. The sauna is functional as is all of the equipment we have in the club, so hard to say where that part is coming from. As for the woman in the locker room, that is certainly a matter of perspective. The behavior of others can be bothersome to some and not to others. Ultimately, we can’t tell them what to say or not say. We want you to be happy at our clubs, Stephanie. We do what we can to create a great experience here. Our General Manager is available and interested in speaking with you to make sure we are all on the same page.

Negative experience: Paul George is a rude and entitled . Treated him with respect and he laughs in my face and is disrespectful. Not the type of person I'd want to be a manager of my company!

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Daniel~ We always appreciate feedback, both positive and negative, it is important to determine if the response is valid or not. In this case, we were able to confirm that you have a membership with us. We are not locating a membership with this name Daniel "Smith" in our database. If you are indeed a member and have a concern, please reach out to our General Manager. Thank you.

Negative experience: Just like the greater ABQ area this facility doesn’t uphold the rules or a general level of cleanliness so the locals take advantage, driving down the quality for those of us who are used to a higher level of quality

Richard Montoya 1 year ago

Positive experience: Great place for your workout! Plenty of cardio machines, strength machines, and an outdoor pool too. Located at 4100 Prospect Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110

Jhonathan Federico 1 year ago

Negative experience: Takes advantage, outdated and not enough weight lifting equipment for the price. Closes the steam room and sauna early and has a dirty pool all the time.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Jhonathan, We appreciate feedback from all of our members. With any membership related activity that we participate in, we have to ask ourselves if the service or product we get is worth the amount we pay for it. If the equipment and the hours don’t meet your expectations, then perhaps this value proposition does not add up for you. Of course, we will continue to keep the club as clean as possible. A never ending battle, to be certain. With that, we would still like to have you stay on as a junior member.

Johnny Carrillo 1 year ago

Negative experience: Tried to pay for a day pass and they would not allow it. Tried to find prices online for a month to month with no luck. Seems like they're trying to rip people off with the way they do business compared to other gyms. Just post a price online and be honest about it instead of making everybody go through the hassle of talking to several employees.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Johnny, You are correct that, as a private club, we do not allow guests. We do, however, allow anyone interested in membership to try it as our guest, no charge and we try to make that as easy as possible. No games, no tricks. Just come try it out and keep your money in your wallet. We have Membership Consultants there to help you. Great people and they don’t bite. We will then go over all of the options with you to see which, is the right one for you. Sounds like it didn’t go down that way for you and, for that, we apologize. Let us know what club you want to try and when and we will make that happen for you.

Negative experience: Almost all "free " lockers in men's locker room are unfunctional. Half of them are locked with nothing inside, empty and stay locked and empty for weeks untouched. Another half is open but with locked door, so they can not be used. Something should be done with that.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Thank you, Andrey!

Negative experience: This is an update from my Previouse review. And my intention is not to hurt a business but to help someone who is considering a gym to improve their health. Don’t go here. Please don’t. The equipment is out dated. They say “new” but they just installed refurbished equipment from the early 2000s. They never organize their weight floor. Members often leave heavy weights hanging around and management refuses to reorganize or clean up the area throughout the week. Bathrooms are dirty, rusted, worn. And the worst part is that I’ve had to talk to several people about canceling my membership. Updated my card on a sheet of paper multiple times only for people to lose it and cause me a late fee. I finally separated from the gym and I have been still harassed by corporate office of an outstanding balance and fees. Every other sports and wellness is okay. But their inability to remedy account issues upfront and transparently is their biggest flaw. Look at their recent reviews. It’s from current employees. It’s disingenuous and honestly sad. If you want to provide a valuable service and environment you need to seriously overhaul your systems and equipment. Not polish a turd. Older review. I’ve been holding off on writing a review… but I’m having a hard time justifying an $80 dollar membership for this specific location. Other locations are great and some of the best gyms in the state but for some reason this location struggles to maintains its equipment. 6 months ago I told the staff that the treadmills don’t work. But it’s been 6 month and most of them have an issue and have not been fixed. Some of them squeak or shake uncontrollably, elevation adjust is stalled or locked, and or just broken. I read a review where it’s hard to get repairs and parts after the pandemic BUT I don’t think that’s a valid excuse when NEW gyms are popping up everyday. I hate switching gyms, I’ve been going here since I was a child… just fix your equipment… PLEASE

Positive experience: And I thought the defined fitness needed remodeling. Decent enough but the back of the house, locker room, showers, truly need work.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Dominic, thank you for the feedback. The review mentions Midtown, so we are assuming that is the club you are referring to? The locker rooms at the Midtown location were completely gutted and redone in the recent past. All new lockers, carpet – the works! We are currently working on the showers to make sure they are all working at 100% efficiency. Thank you!

Negative experience: They don’t allow drop-ins. very terrible for guests wanting to just try the business out. take your money to planet fitness or somewhere more accomodating

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Nicholas~ While we don’t allow paid guests since we are a private club, we will let people try it as our guest (of a current member) to evaluate if it is the right club for them.

Dominic Cadena 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Was visiting for the holidays, I came here on a guest pass because I have a cousin who is currently a member. My experience was nothing but great. Justin was the rep who helped me sign up as a guests, he was very helpful and hospitable. They let me come in as a guest my entire visit and I was very appreciative of it. The front desk staff was friendly, and the staff did a great job on keeping it clean. If I lived here I would definitely join.

Patience Misner 2 years ago

Negative experience: While I like the gym services, I’m pretty disappointed that I need a medical note from my doctor for my medical leave of absence. This is an old, outdated practice that violates patient rights and is a barrier to access and a large time suck. For the price I pay to participate in this gym, I’d hope they trust me enough to be out on medical leave when I say I’m out on medical leave. I’m hurt. I’m disappointed and dissatisfied and I’m considering going somewhere else.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hi Patience,Requiring a medical note is a standard practice in the health club industry. Though it is never our intention to inconvenience our members, we must continue with this practice. Since it requires no personal information as to the reason for the medical hold, a quick general email from the doctor will suffice. At any one time, we will have as many as 100 or more individuals on medical hold - all with proper documentation. Please reach out to our General Manager for further discussion.

Sy sanchez 2 years ago

Negative experience: Over priced. Nell will continue to call and harass you to come back no matter how often you tell her to stop! The staff at front is to busy flirting with each other and people coming in to answer questions. Last time there the bathrooms were disgusting. The set up of pretty much every sports and wellness is horrible. They have no pool bubble anymore so swimming is only summer. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Sy, Thank you for your feedback and appreciate you being a member on and off over the last 10 years! To fill you in on current status, we changed our pool operations at Midtown about 5 of 6 years ago. Due to the overwhelming desire from our members, we no longer use a bubble and we now heat the pool in the cooler months and keep it open all year. The members love it! If you happen to change your mind, we welcome you back. We hope you are able to find a place that you like and are able to continue to pursue your fitness goals.

Neal G 2 years ago

Negative experience: Same cardio machines broken for YEARS. How about either fix them or (here's a novel idea) replace them! Manager will give endless lip service as to why they're still broken but ultimately does absolutely nothing. No problem taking your high priced membership fees, but don't expect them to be used towards equipment maintenance or replacement.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hi Neal, We understand and share your frustration. Dealing with the equipment manufacturers since COVID has been a challenge unlike anything we have experienced as a company. For example, we ordered replacement handles for one machine and the four rubber handles alone were $600 and we couldn’t get them for months. We will continue to stay on the suppliers and continue to look for parts wherever we can. We are the only company in New Mexico to employ a full time equipment repair person and we will continue to make the significant investment that we make each month in repair and maintenance.

Zachary Romero 2 years ago

Negative experience: Run down facility’s, free weight section is horrible. I go to liberty for 25 bucks a month and it has 10x the equipment!! I tried to cancel the day after I signed up, I went one time. Now they want 500+ dollars for non payment. As all the other reviews say, poor management. I’ve been to better hotel gyms.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Zachary~ Sports & Wellness offers a 14 day cancellation to all new members. That is not required by law, but it is something we feel it is important to offer. Those that join do so because they see the value and are willing to invest and commit to becoming a member. If they change their mind, for whatever reason, they may resign their membership and receive a full refund in that initial 14 day period. In rare cases, members decide to join another club or just fail to get going on pursuing their goals and attempt to resign outside of that 14 day window. Though we understand the frustration involved with trying to “undo” a commitment, it is important for the public to know that we treat all members equally, fairly and 100% consistently with the terms of their agreement.

Melanie Medina 2 years ago

Negative experience: The absolute worst customer service from a manager I've ever experienced. Instead of being understanding and compassionate he was rude and a jerk. He could have been nicer and explained the promotion and offered to work something out instead said I know the promotion. Good for you George so glad the workers know the promotion but not the members so at the end of it we are screwed and you offered nothing to keep me as a member instead said I'll send you the cancellation and after sending gave me a look like, can I help you? I'm the one who had to ask did you send it then he gave me a dirty look said, ya and got up and walked away. Which in fact my contract does not have any where on it that I would need to change my membership and add on increasing my price. If the gym has your number they will text you so much to try and give you a promotion and not explain. I read the contact and knew a price increase after the promotion but a month later changed the policy again to make me change my membership and add on I 100% was not aware of and did not appreciate a Manager of all people to be so rude and awful to us. Imagine if he was understanding and said I'm sorry let's work this out. Here's what the pricing would be. You can't afford it I'm sorry we give these discounts here's this promotion etc. Think about it, you go ahead and work out today and let me know tomorrow instead we had to leave the gym mad because of how awful he was to us and now think this is the worst Gym in Albuquerque Do Not join this gym. There's others with better hours and more reasonable price for single moms with kids on a teacher's salary.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Melanie, We are sorry to hear about your experience yesterday. We take great pride in providing exemplary customer service as we have done over the last 35 years. Please reach out to General Manager, Susan Nagel, and we will get everything sorted out for you.

Negative experience: I used to love coming here (10+ years), but in addition to being very expensive, they would overcharge me all the time, especially when my kids took swim classes. They refused to provide invoices/receipts, so it was on me to check the charges every month and call the main office in Denver. I left for a gym that charges half the price and has more classes. The drive is longer and I would have loved to stay, but enough is enough. I see quite a few familiar faces in my new gym- including former teachers from MSW.

Negative experience: I spoke with George who was management. He was incredibly rude. I am considering cancelling my membership. I’m not willing to pay as much as they charge when their customer service is terrible.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Joshua,We apologize for the experience you had at one of our clubs. We strive to provide the best customer service possible and do what we can to make it right when that does not happen. Our General Manager will be reaching out to you to get the situation resolved. Thank you.

Ryan Melloy 3 years ago

Positive experience: Been a member for life but they need to stay open until at least 10! Didn’t like getting kicked out of the sauna at 8:50, 10 minutes before they close at 9!

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Ryan and thank you for the feedback. There are many factors that go into the consideration of extending our hours. Staffing is a big one for all businesses lately. Hearing from our members helps us understand what they are looking for, so thanks again for speaking up.This is definitely something we are seriously considering, but we have not yet made a final decision.

Positive experience: I have been going to Midtown Sports and wellness for over 10 years. And out of the 5 Sports and Wellness Clubs in town, Modtown has the most welcoming atmosphere. Shout out to Ruth! Ruth teaches several classes at midtown, she is always kind and encouraging.

Nick Rivera 3 years ago

Positive experience: Haven't been to this location in ten years and unfortunately it appears nothing has changed or been updated. The treadmill I used kept skipping at only 6mph and the floor equipment is just meh. For the amount they charge they should atleast maintain their equipment if they're trying to make the machines last for decades. This is really the same review for midtown and del norte. I swear a lot of the machines at these locations have been there for 20 plus years...sticky cables and all.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello Nick, Thank you for taking the time to reach out and share your thoughts. We work every day to maintain the quality and best use of our equipment including oiling cables weekly and replacing equipment per use patterns. Your experience is not in line with our expectations and we would greatly appreciate it if you could share the specific machine of concern with our club management team so we can address it immediately. As you have likely seen, we purchase the highest quality equipment and, in doing so, our strength training equipment can withstand years of use; however, other machines such as treadmills are replaced much more frequently. We continue to reinvest as members showcase their interest and we look forward to providing the highest quality into the future.

Jessica Arias 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Susan from sports and wellness went above and beyond when myself and other person came to the conclusion that the hours couldn’t accommodate our schedule. Though this gym would be ideal we had to walk away. Susan was very considerate and exhausted all efforts to advocate for me! I really hope in the future I can experience this gym. For now am just grateful for the wonderful staff member that went to bat for me

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Hello, Jessica! We appreciate your kind words and comments. I will be sure to pass your kudos along to Susan and the team! It is always a sincere pleasure to hear from you, and we look forward to welcoming you in!

Fantastic experience: I should probably leave a review because midtown is basically my home away from home I’m so thankful for midtown! The staff is amazing and the facility is always beautifully clean! My big brag is the Swim instructor Kateri. We started private lessons with another swim instructor for my 5 year old at the beginning of the summer and it honestly was not a good experience. In light of that experience we were offered the opportunity to switch instructors and immediately got in contact with Kat. I’m so thankful we met Kat! She is so gentle and so kind. My daughter has learned so much and she absolutely loves Swimming with Kat. She is always on time, she is always eager to listen to my daughter and she is so very flexible with scheduling. Seriously! She needs to be working with young children. She is absolutely fabulous and we count her as a blessing to us constantly. We originally were only planning on doing swim lessons over the summer (which we missed most of with the prior instructor) but after starting with Kat we keep signing up for more private lessons because we just love her and the experience she gives our Daughter every week.

Midtown Sports and Wellness

Wow, Elise - Thank you so much for your 5-star review! We love that Midtown is your home-away-from-home. We're all about our community. We will make sure to share your comments with the club team, and in particular Kateri who has made such a positive impression with your daughter. Thank you for taking the time to talk about your experience and for spreading the good word about our club. And thanks for being a valued member!
