Trudy Fitness Center: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Everyone is friendly and helpful.
Positive experience: Having graduated in ‘22 maybe my opinion is outdated but this gym holds a special place in in heart. Yeah, sure, the squat rack/bench double is weird but considering the space, Trudy is a very nice gym. It may not be Equinox, but it serves its purpose. Much of the equipment was starting to get old, even when I was there. They added another Olympic lifting area and replaced the old one too. Looks great. The turf actually looks like a nice touch. Space management is a little wonky though. I think that in the future, a separate area should be built in the lot next to Trudy specifically for cardio or maybe specifically for squat racks/olympic lifting with the wonderful endowment that Colgate has. Cardio machines upstairs are great, almost always open. Hours used to be whack on weekends, but hopefully that has changed this far post-pandemic. The staff was always kind when I was there, not sure if that’s still the case. It was always nice to see your friends around. I genuinely miss Trudy. Go ‘gate!
Negative experience: TL;DR everything in this gym is old, disheveled, and possibly dangerous. Morrisville's Fitness Center blows this place out of the water in accessibility, modernity, and cleanliness. Not a fan of this gym. It looks pretty on the outside, but even seemingly simple amenities are lacking. Most of the equipment looks and feels antiquated, like they were purchased from yard sales. The squat racks double as bench presses, since no actual bench presses are present. The paint is chipped, the metal is rusty, and they feel flimsy enough to collapse from a light breeze yet heavy enough to kill you. On top of this, you have to fight the plates to get them on and off the bar since they're made of dry rubber and haven't been lubed in a fortnight. Re-racking the bar when you're done with a set is a nightmare; the j-hooks are attached to a metal plate that juts out enough to catch on the bar and make your life flash before your eyes. The cable machines are okay, but none of the grips or ropes appear to have been fixed or upgraded since Y2K. There isn't even a rack to set them on when you're done using them; there was just a big pile on the floor. The gym is a decent size, but the space they have feels misappropriated. Too much empty space where there shouldn't be any, too much equipment in one spot when it should be spread out. 25% of the space is dedicated to a small patch of turf, a kettlebell rack, and a leg press machine. It looks silly. The dumbbell and barbell racks are the only saving graces. The plate-loaded row and preacher curl machines were also nice, but even so, you don't necessarily need them to finish out your workout. This gym reminds me of the Oakland Coliseum: old, unkempt, and riding on the highs of its past. You would think Colgate could do a lot with this place, especially with $209.7 million in revenue last year. But, like the Athletics of the Oakland Coliseum, it ended up being a cheap disappointment.
Fantastic experience: Going back soon! Loved the facilities
Fantastic experience: Trudy Fitness center is now open!!!! Back to normal hours. Masks are required throughout the entire visit to the fitness center. We ask that all patrons show proof of vaccinations at the Huntington Equipment Cage. Memberships can be purchased at the Huntington Equipment Cage. Personal trainers, and classes are also available.
Positive experience: Needs to fix hours
Fantastic experience: WOW, Amazing place
Fantastic experience: I love this gym, on Colgate campus. Drop in membership/ guest passes, 2 ergs to keep up with rowing workouts when you are off the water, two floors of workout equipment, access to a great lap pool, showers and towels. Wonderful, kind staff. Bonus is it's only a few blocks from a Dunkin' Donuts.
Fantastic experience: Great equipment. Could use one more Olympic rack
Fantastic experience: I love the gym here! It's never packed and I usually never have to wait for a machine. People are nice and will let you hop in, in the middle of a set. Gym membership also gets you access to the activities gym to play basketball, rock climb, play squash and tons of classes! My only issue is I wish there was more space to do plyometrics like an open gym for walking lunges or independent yoga sesh with feeling like the whole gym is watching you.
