Positive experience: Black Bear makes beautiful use of the rugged chaparral landscape around Parker to fit in 18 well designed and challenging holes. Despite the natural appearance of the layout, however, it is a housing development course, built for one purpose, selling houses. As a result, every single hole is surrounded by houses on all sides.The course makes significant use of dry washes, creek beds, arroyos, and natural elements as hazards, and has many beautiful views of the mountains due to some significant elevation changes (and also some regular views of enormous power lines that stretch across the property).. There are many forced carries, especially on every single par 3, and this course is not for the faint of heart (although generous forward tee placements will allow beginners or less experienced players to avoid many of the hazards). My most significant critique of the course is that it is almost impossible to walk, although I'm sure a young person with strong legs could make it. There are several quarter mile drives between the green of one hole and the tee of the next. And in fact one hole, the 14th, requires a long drive across the street into an adjoining neighborhood in order to play a single par 3, after which you drive back across the same street into the original neighborhood and along a path for quite some time to get to the 15th hole. It is also a pretty unbalanced layout, although that can make things interesting on the back nine, which is a par 37 with three par fives. As part of a private club arrangement with Blackstone Country Club, it has a beautiful clubhouse with many amenities, including bocce ball!
