Sanctuary Climbing and Fitness: Opinions
Fantastic experience: I've been climbing at Sanctuary for a while now and love it here. The staff are always friendly and fellow climbers are great to learn from and solve problems with. The routes are changed often, and the types of movements required to solve different problems are interesting and unique. Love the combined mental and physical challenge. A great place to climb!
Positive experience: Clean nice facilities, cool staff. They have a treadwall and moon board, which is cool. The main issue in my opinion is the setting. A lot of the problems I got on weren't the best lines and didn't flow well, and it seemed like the way they make problems hard is either with bad top out holds, and/or really bad feet. And I don't mean bad feet in a way that helps you work on your footwork, I mean like just bad feet in really awkward placement, really far feet, or no feet all together. The rating seemed pretty far off too. I hopped on a v6 and v5 that were more like v8. Some v4s were closer to v6, and some were like v2. The hardest rating they have is a v7 and their was only one. That should kinda give you an idea of how the ratings were a bit off. I know rating and setting can be vary a lot from gym to gym, but they're usually somewhat close. And they strangely have auto belays and top ropes, but at the height of a typical indoor Boulder wall. Not a bad thing, just seemed kinda silly Not trying to bash the gym, it's a nice place and you can tell a lot of thought and effort went into opening it. The just probably need some more experienced setters, in my opinion.
Fantastic experience: I'm no expert climber but I've been to a few gyms over the years, strictly for bouldering. I was really impressed with Sanctuary and I feel like it blows away other bouldering places I've been to in terms of cleanliness and variety of routes. Lots of interesting strength training gear too. Very impressed to see the attention paid to airflow with many air purifiers on at all times and several windows kept open.
Fantastic experience: Their sport climbing area is laughable BUT I get it, having a gym with a real robust sport climbing space is tough considering just pure building needs a one part. However, I do often see people who might be more afraid of heights learning the ropes, which is a very good way to introduce that side of climbing to those with higher anxiety levels. The rest of the gym is absolutely top notch. Staff was super kind and the bouldering was great. So many options and quality problems. Nice little functional fitness area too. Very pleased and will absolutely return every time I am in town.
Fantastic experience: Super nice staff, friendly gym-goers, and pretty good day pass rates. Routes are also pretty fun, though I would like to see more dynamic routes and some more volumes in use. Good hold variety
