Fantastic experience: Started boxing as an amateur with Rob as my coach, great teacher/instructor and a true believer in the fundamentals of the sweet science. Welcoming, non-pretentious gym atmosphere that accepts people of all skill types and fitness levels. Also, Rob is very knowledgeable in strength training/ conditioning so if you're looking to get in great shape this is the place to go.

Positive experience: Good gym with a friendly staff. I've experienced a nice mix of instruction from staff without someone hovering over my shoulder the entire time. I get a great workout every time, while steadily improving my stamina and technique.

Fantastic experience: I met Rob when he first opened his first location. Phase one was a small, small location. Phase 2 he knocked out a wall and added another room. Phase three he moved to his current location. Rob and I hit it off from the first time we met. I'm a former athlete (collegiate football) and have alway cross-trained and his gym provides a great place to get in shape. I've alway admired how Rob and I have a similar trait.....WE ARE HUSTLERS....HUSTLERS ARE BORN NOT MADE....with that being said I've always tried to help him out around the gym because I have witnessed the progress that he has made over the years. To conclude Old Skool is just that.....old school (those that know what old school is don't need an explanation) Come get your workout in and enjoy the comradery.

Fantastic experience: I've trained at many gyms throughout central Ohio and this is up and above the best one out there. Rob Pilger's training is truly a step ahead of the competition and his attention to detail is unmatched.I highly recommend checking it out as the first class is always free.

Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough good things about the place. You can work at your own pace and can always pick up the pace if you feel like you are not being challenged anymore. The owner and trainers are always around giving pointers during workouts, just a really good atmosphere.

Fantastic experience: I'm the 2x Ohio Cruiserweight Boxing Champion. Started with Rob as an amateur and seen first hand the business grow! Its done this because Rob and his staff care about the service they provide to the public. They do a lot of work with the city and provide outlets for kids to get opportunities to be great where they'd never get it otherwise holding the only fight shows in the city and taking these kids to national tournaments. Anyone that wants to bash they gym or call it a cult has entirely misspoken, there is a large diversity of corporate, blue collar, highschool kids, young children, and even professional athletes (myself and some Ohio State Athletic Alumni included) that come back for the knowledge and results Pilger's has to offer. This is a real gym with real results. You are who you associate with, always look at your sources when you look at reviews.

Fantastic experience: I came to Pilger's two years ago from another Boxing gym in columbus. I can speak as both a competitor and someone who boxes as outlet from my job that Rob does a great job of providing avenues for whatever you want your boxing experience to be. There are daily classes if your looking to get in shape as well as flexible hours. It is one of the best boxing gyms I've ever set foot in! From a Competitive standpoint, I left my old gym looking for a step up in competition / sparring / experience ect. This gym undeniably has produced some of the best fighters in the state of Ohio. Rob also plays a huge part in the training members and never over coaches. He is always there when I want to get better with any skill.Needless to say Pilger's is a great gym with great people.

Positive experience: Never been there, but I have trained with 1 pro out of sam's gym in glouster who had the worst experience there. He even fought a handful of amateur bouts for rob and said he never even warmed his fighters up or wrapped their hands before bouts. In my opinion it is all smoke, mirrors and money. Another friend confirmed this last week telling me all the shady behavior you would expect from a pseudo martial arts school with a "black belt club". My friend ended up being charged over $400 to his debit/credit card for 5 days of training. How did that happen you ask? Well rob answered him by saying "did you read the fine print? Its $300 to cancel.." in my opinion he has attended more business seminars than boxing classes. He claims to have 80 amateur fights(of course doesn't state his record) and to have fought pro on a James Toney under card.. that sounds good and all except there is no trace of his record with USA boxing, and there certainly are no videos of these 80+ bouts that include a pro fight on the under card of one of the greats. Not a picture, not a video, just lots of strength training certificates. I give the 3 stars bc of the facility and the fact that he does attract decent boxers with his cult atmosphere.

Fantastic experience: I took my first boxing boot camp class last week. It was the best workout I have been put through in years. Not only do you get a great workout, you get to learn a skill. The gym is exactly as the name implies...Old Skool. They have all the equipment and motivation you need to get in great shape. i am looking forward to my next workout there.

Fantastic experience: This is a great gym to workout and learn the science of boxing. Rob is an amazing coach who really cares about everyone who attends his gym. The workouts are tough, but you will see great results if you stick with it. If you want to become better at boxing, or are just looking to get in to top shape, I would highly recommend trying out Old Skool. I have been to many gyms in Columbus and Old skool is by far the best.

Fantastic experience: Boxing as it should be. No fluff, no BS, just good people and hard work. It's as far from the big box, fake plastic gym experience as you can get -- and that's what makes it perfect. I love this place.

Fantastic experience: I've been working out at Old Skool for almost a year now. I had no boxing experience and I wasn't in great shape when I started. I honestly didn't know what to expect. What I found was a very nice gym with competent trainers full of dedicated people showing up to 'put in work.' Nobody was barking orders and I wasn't pushed beyond my limits. The workouts are hard, but you are encouraged to progress at your own pace. Just the atmosphere of everyone working hard was enough to push me to train hard. I've gotten in great shape and I'm learning actual boxing skill. Rob and Erin are incredibly respectful of everyone in the gym and that carries over to how the gym members treat each other. Nobody is walking around with a cocky 'tough guy' attitude--the owners won't stand for it. Everybody is very respectful. There are competitive fighters, business people, moms and teens training side by side. There are all different fitness levels, but everyone is treated equally. If you want to fight competitively you can go that route, but you never have to step in the ring if you don't want to . You'll never be pushed into sparring or competing, but if you're interested in that it is there for you (the gym even hosts amateur fights on a regular basis). There's fitness classes and boot camps if that's you're thing....I've never tried those as my main interest is in learning to box. But, there seem to be a lot of people who participate in those. I almost forgot to mention that there is a weight room for strength training as well.

Positive experience: Be wary if you got here from a Groupon. They offer the Groupon classes Monday, Wednesday, Friday 5-6pm and Tuesday, Thursday 6am. If your schedule is restrictive, this is probably not the Groupon for you. It would be helpful to have that information on the front of the Groupon. As it is, you don't get that scheduling information until you actually buy it and then you have to go through the process of cancelling it if you can't make it to those few options for attending the class. Also, the person I spoke to about scheduling was short and not very friendly.

Fantastic experience: This is a great place to work out and it's a great place to learn boxing as a skill. A full workout lasts about 90 minutes. You usually go in 3 minute intervals with a 1-minute break. The workout includes jump rope, shadow boxing, heavy bag, speed bag, double end bag, uppercut bag, mitt work, mobility drills, and depending on the weather, sled pulls/pushes and road work. Sometimes there are punch-out drills (hitting the heavy bag for a 3 minute round in 30 second intervals), defensive work with a partner, and sparring if you're interested (and when Rob tells you your ready). There's a weight room with pretty much anything you'll need. What's great is that if you want to learn something, you just ask. If you're doing something wrong, you get corrected. It's diverse, you see all kinds of people, and everyone is nice. It really is old school, you'll notice when you first walk in. It's not manicured the way Title Boxing or Lifetime is, but it's got a good atmosphere. The bottom line is that you get out of it what you are willing to put in.

Fantastic experience: I contacted Rob last year to help me continue my boxing training when my current trainer was injured. Rob was able to pickup my training right where I left off and work with me on a weekly basis. Rob has enhanced my punching and footwork skills and I look forward to taking it to the next level with Rob Pilger's Old Skool boxing!

Fantastic experience: Best place and town

Fantastic experience: One of the best boxing gyms out there. You will be put to work, but you're going to be trained by some excellent instructors. Anyone who wants to learn basic hand to hand combat all the way up to amateur boxing should give it a try.

Fantastic experience: Great place to be if you truly want to get better , everyone is welcoming and willing to work with you especially if your willing to work too , if you want to box in Ohio Pilgers is the place to be. For sure.

Fantastic experience: I am not exaggerating to say this gym, and Rob Pilger, drastically improved my quality of life. Rob has cultivated a culture at the gym that is open, skills-based, and collegial. I have never come across another fighter in the gym who is anything less than supportive of my goals and skills development. Young and old fighters mix. The boxing gym is gritty yet respectful and no-drama; a true melting pot of different races and classes of people. And the trainers are excellent for repetitive teaching of crucial fundamentals. I have always been particularly struck that Rob treats everyone at every skill level as seriously and with as much respect as if they were the next heavyweight champion contender. Just an incredible gym.

Fantastic experience: Utterly impressed with the friendliness, and just vibe of this gym. Took my son for his first lesson in the kids class and he hasn’t stopped telling me how much he loved it the rest of the evening! The atmosphere is straight out of the old gyms you see in pictures. Staff was fun and welcoming. We will definitely be coming back!

Fantastic experience: Amazing gym, when you walk in you’re reminded of the boxing gyms in the scenes right out of the movies. Back alley, great traditional and old school equipment as well as styles. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. I’ve only been here 2 months and this place has already become a second home for me.

David Albertson 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: In my opinion, this is one of the best gyms in Columbus. With good trainers and a sizable free weights room, it is has a great setup for an effective, all-around workout. Hours of operation are generous and outside of the typical work hours. Additionally, they have enough space, bags and equipment that even on busy days enable you to keep on pace with your workout, which is essential for those with a schedule to keep. The trainers are friendly, experienced and are open to all skill levels. The gym sponsors tournaments and is highly involved with training fighters. That said, it is one of the better places to get a first taste of what the sport demands and is open to all ages and experience levels. Even if you're only interested in the exercise aspect of it, it is well worth the drive for the workout.

Fantastic experience: I have been coming here and training with Rob for about 6 months now. I cannot recommend this place more. If you are interested in getting into shape using training methods that really work and want to learn real boxing skills, this is the place to go! I started with basically 0 boxing experience and Rob had the patience to really teach me the foundations and has been building on them since. Whether you are a beginner looking for one-on-one training, group classes, or just a place to practice and spar, you will find everything you need here.

Fantastic experience: My son is 11 years old and has lost a lot of weight and gotten a lot of self-confidence working with Rob at the gym the kids that help train are super nice to the younger kids it is really Great if your kids looking for a way to get good exercise and learn some good boxing training Rob is an extremely nice guy ..

Fantastic experience: Love the place, the workouts are great, the coaches are awesome and the people there are some of the nicest people I’ve met. The owner is cool as hell great guy!

Fantastic experience: If you’re looking for a true boxing gym, this is it. Whether you’re looking for a tough workout or want to try your speed in the ring, this is the right place to come. There’s no shortage of people willing to help out whether you’re a beginner or have experience. Pilger’s has a great atmosphere with plenty of class options. The first time I went, I got hooked!

Fantastic experience: Took a fighter i train there for sparring, if you talk to the owner Rob you can get some high level sparring in there. It's a nice gym with Good people. Their coaches seem to be knowledgeable, and offer something for any skill level. If your looking for a private session this is not the place they offer classes for groups, This is more a gym for basic's classes and already trained fighters to workout and spar. I'd recommend this gym

Fantastic experience: I had been hitting the heavy and speed bag the past six months but knew my footwork was bad. This place was perfect place for learning more and challenging your body and mind. Conner and Rob are very knowledgeable. A lot of fun. Can't wait to go back.

Fantastic experience: So I wanted to wait a few weeks before chiming in and giving my opinion about Pilger's Old School Boxing Gym. I just started week 6 today- I have to say I'm nothing less then impressed with the coach and trainers that belong to the gym. I haven't left this gym one time feeing like I didn't get enough of something.. they work ya, they work with you at your level training to help you to achieve the next level.. it's the real deal. When I first started looking for a gym back at the beginning of the year, I had two criteria: to find a gym that wasn't commercial and find a gym that respects the tradition of boxing. Let me say, I only had to go to one gym to find it, and I'm really glad about that! Not only with training but the staff cares about the individual on a personal level- I continually see coach rob work one on one with each trainee each night.. that's a true coach. I don't feel like I belong here.. I DO belong here.

Fantastic experience: Having been a fighter for close to a decade, it is always challenging to find a gym you can call "home" during short stays in various cities all across the U.S. Having fought/trained out of Cincinnati, OH for most of my career, whenever I would travel to Columbus, OH for business and/or other affairs, I have always been able to train at Rob Pilgers "Pilgers Old Skool Boxing and Fitness Academy". Not only has the owner Rob always opened his gym to me for "as long as needed" but the facility itself is a thing of beauty! It is rare to find boxing gyms very much at all anymore but to find a gym w the amount of space as Pilgers', equipped with a full size boxing ring for sparring, and every type of bag you could ever need, it is truly a gift to the fighter and/or person looking to workout and/or learn boxing/self-defense. Having trained at various gyms throughout the country, often times after walking in to a gym you very rarely attend, you are looked at and/or made to feel like you are under a spotlight/microscope or even that "you dont belong". That has never been the case from any of my visits to Pilgers Old Skool Boxing gym (Columbus, OH) and that is why I like to call it "my gym away from gym". I am looking forward to training in Columbus, OH in the future and when I do, I know one thing; I won’t need to find a place to train! Keep it up Rob

Fantastic experience: I am a 12 year Marine combat veteran who has been looking for a way to stay in shape after leaving the USMC and I found it in Pilger's Boxing Academy. People of all ability levels are welcome here. You can do everything from lifting weights, hitting heavy bags, flipping tires, jumping rope, and controlled sparring under the watchful eyes of a very competent training staff. I have been training here for one month and my fitness level has already greatly increased. I give my utmost recommendation for anyone to try this gym. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic experience: BEST DAMN GYM IN COLUMBUS FLAT OUT!

Thomas Carline 8 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great gym with great people and a great atmosphere. Has everything you need to get a complete workout in. People from all different walks of life with skill levels from beginner to amateur. The trainers are knowledgable and will push you to the limits you are comfortable with. This is not a Title where you stand in front of a bag and everyone throws ones and twos. You have to be motivated and will to learn. If you are, you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic experience: Awesome gym. My son and I looked at several gyms for him to go to and learn to box. I liked Pilger's from the moment I walked in. Rob (the owner) is a solid guy that is actually interested in the people training with him. Everyone at the gym (trainers and people working out) is personable and friendly. This is a great place to go if you are looking to actually learn to box or you are just interested in a great workout and getting in shape. My wife and I trust Rob and the other trainers with our teenage son three nights a week. I think that is the highest praise any parent can give.
