Steelworks Strength Systems: Opinions

Fantastic experience: My buddy convinced me to go with him to Steelworks CrossFit one day and I have been hooked ever since. Not only did Brian customize his training towards my abilities and needs, he made me feel like I was going to Steelworks my whole life. It is a very friendly atmosphere and everyone encourages each others. I've been going since February and I can definitely tell a difference in my overall strength. Brian is a great coach and always pushes me harder which is what I was lacking going to the gym. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat!
Fantastic experience: Brian is a great instructor and has created a fantastic environment for the class to work together and encourage each other. Really enjoying my time at Steelworks.
Fantastic experience: The workouts are varied and fun. Sage is always keeping an eye out and giving tips if your form needs to be adjusted, to keep you safe. The environment is open and friendly and easygoing. The equipment is in great shape. The classes are super easy to sign up for. I’m glad I joined!
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is a fantastic gym for both experienced gym-goers and new people looking to learn. Brian is a great coach and business operator who is so supportive and can help you reach any fitness goals you have. The atmosphere in the gym is friendly, welcoming and supportive so people new to the gym should leave any worries about being new at the door. The gym is staffed by great coaches each day, that make the workouts challenging but enjoyable.
Fantastic experience: Brian, the owner, is great. I did personal training with him. I'm not athletic and it had been a looooong time since I had exercised. Brian has a welcoming and encouraging attitude. We did a variety of activities that were challenging but that I was able to accomplish. When I would get discouraged about my skill or althletic abilities Brian reminded me that we all have to start somewhere. Starting my journey into physical fitness with Brian was just what I needed to get myself over the mental hurdle I had created for myself around exercise. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: This gym is excellent to get in shape. We would do all kind of fun and dynamic work outs that strength all part of your body. Definitely recommend to come!
Fantastic experience: I started coming to steelworks in May with very little knowledge of how to properly exercise for my benefit. In the past few months, I’ve seen great improvement in all areas of fitness - Brian and team are excellent coaches who are there to help you each step of the way. It’s an awesome community and I’m glad I joined. If you are thinking about it, give steelworks a try!
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is the best! I started a few months ago with no experience in weightlifting and an injured knee(torn meniscus). Brian and Sage have been amazing with patiently teaching me proper technique and modifying exercises on the fly to accommodate my injured knee. Steelworks is the place to go if you are looking for a full body workout that pushes your limits in a very educational, professional, and supportive environment. And the community is great!
Fantastic experience: Brian is a great coach, makes you feel welcomed from day one and challenges/motivates you to hit your fitness goals. If you’re looking for a community to build confidence, get in shape and make friends, I would 100% recommend.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is the smartest fitness gym I have ever been a part of. Brian's programs for each class are wonderfully thought out and keep you progressing towards your goals. In my first 2 months, I lost 15lbs and gained back my muscle. I highly suggest Steelworks Strength Systems for everyone!
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is the best gym I’ve ever been. At first I was scared to join for not being in shape and athletic but Brian, Sage and the other members made feel very welcomed and part of the group. Steelworks is for all levels of fitness, I’ve been a member of the gym for 5 months now and I can see how much my athletic skills have improved. 10 out of 10 recommend it.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is a great place for a workout, accountability, and meeting new people. As someone who was new to lifting and Cross Fit, I always felt comfortable asking the coach, normally Brian, to clarify moves and proper position. I was able to learn and grow as I became more comfortable with the routine; I always got something new out of each workout. Most important to me, I never felt intimidated, especially since everyone else had more experience or could lift much more than me. The owner, Brian, has cultivated a healthy culture amongst the members where you are encouraged to get the most that is best for you, and you are treated as an equal. All of the coaches are extremely knowledgable and dedicated to helping each member. Also, the gym has taken safety seriously, especially with more risks during Covid. I look forward to continuing with Steelworks and am grateful for having this gym in my life! I could not recommend this gym and workout more!
Fantastic experience: I have been to many many many gyms in the city but fell in love with this gym, from the people to the program. I feel myself getting stronger and wanting to go to the gym for class. Brian is so knowledgeable and takes the time to work with you regardless of your experience in a gym.
Fantastic experience: Brian is a great coach who puts you through a variety of things that challenge and improve all aspects of fitness/movement. And a great community of people who are supportive and fun to work out with. Would highly recommend to people of any athletic ability!
Fantastic experience: I cannot recommend Steelworks enough. I was anxious about starting in a small gym with what I thought would be impossible workouts for someone on the larger size. I was completely wrong, Brian is incredibly kind and extremely knowledgeable. Everything can be adjusted for your skill level and the environment is so welcoming. I have done both the personal training sessions as well as the classes and I wish I could give 10 stars. Highly, highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality Brian provides an excellent work out each time I go. He helps you to stay motivated, gives personal tips, and makes the gym a community. They are challenging workouts, but there are always improvisations and held in a non judgement area. I feel stronger than I have ever before. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: I love going to this gym. I feel fortunate it is just a couple blocks away, but I feel incredibly supported and safe as I work on my strength journey. Brian does a wonderful job taking you wherever you are in your experience lifting weights to help you feel empowered to get stronger and work on improving on your weaknesses. I have learned so much in just 6 months of being a member
Fantastic experience: Positive: Professionalism , Quality Brian and co. are fantastic trainers, and the atmosphere at Steelworks is amazing. Regardless of your skill level, the coaches will make sure to set you up with a comfortable but challenging routine. If you're looking to work on your strength and fitness, I can't imagine a more welcoming place!
Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough good things about Steelworks. I joined because I wanted to strengthen my shoulder so I could avoid physical therapy, and it worked. Within weeks of working out at Steelworks, with the expert guidance of the owner Brian, and coach Joe, the pain in my shoulder subsided, and now it is gone. This is due to their incredible knowledge and commitment to helping each of us reach our health and fitness goals. As someone who has been to many different gyms over the years, I highly, HIGHLY recommend Steelworks.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is a cornerstone of the neighborhood not only offering access to fitness and wellness but fostering community in Brewerytown. I'm not going to lie I was VERY intimidated when I saw lifting an an integral part to the workout. But the owner (Brian) and trainers are experts in their fields and ensure safety and form come first. Not only that, it's fun! Everyone is there to support and get through it together. If you are looking for a guided class with experts I highly recommend giving this a try... I haven't regretted it
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is worth it. Bottom line recommendation… If you are thinking fresh start or want a new setting, try it. It’s a unique place with high standards and practical application. I’m older-ish, low on time. But I leave feeling better and more energized, more in touch. Brian has a unique talent to set a high standard and meet you where you are. He thinks about the process, teaches the right way, but adapts to your ability. Steelworks is also a community…you participate with different people. That’s a big draw too, especially these days. I’m happy I invested my time and energy.
Fantastic experience: Such an amazing gym!!! I have been going to Steelworks for almost 3 years, and made sure that when I moved, I was still close enough to continue coming. It is so laid back and welcoming for all people, bodies, levels of performance, etc. There is no feeling of cut-throat competition: just that the coaches and fellow members encourage you to improve on your goals or push you to do your best. The owner, Brian, has extensive knowledge about fitness, weight lifting, training, anatomy/kinesiology, nutrition, etc., and is always learning and adapting his knowledge to update the training program. He listens to what people want and need, and is so helpful if you need to modify movements due to injury or goals. ALL the coaches here are wonderful. The environment fosters such good members. It is truly a unique gym environment, and one that I look forward to not just for a good workout, but a friendly, welcoming group of people. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality Brian is a great gym instructor! As someone who has not had a strong gym/workout background, he really helps foster a sense of community and personal growth. I’m happy to say that I’ve seen significant progress by going to Steelworks Strengths.
Fantastic experience: I've never been so strong or felt such a sense of community at a gym as I have at Steelworks. Brian is extremely skilled not only at explaining technique and correcting form when lifting, but he crafts genius workout programs. In each workout there is a warm up portion to prevent injury, a portion to improve long-term mobility through practicing fundamental skills, and a portion to push ourselves with strength building and conditioning. I am often blown away by how well thought out each workout is, and it's so encouraging to show up and get to laugh and challenge ourselves with a good group of humans. This gym is a really special place. So glad to have this gym in my neighborhood and so thankful to be able to continue to get stronger knowing I am in the right environment to avoid injuries. Wanna come workout with us?
Fantastic experience: I have been training here for well over 2 years now and have seen incredible progression in my athleticism. Steelworks combines skilled agility training, olympic power lifting, neuromuscular recruitment training, and cardiovascular endurance training into a well thought-out exercise program. The owner and head trainer, Brian, is evidently knowledgable about his programming and passionate about his clients, and shows it by constantly furthering his knowledge to better serve his clients. He offers personalized training advice in a group class setting, as well as personal training sessions, classes for seniors, etc. Each monthly cycle of programming is ever changing to keep classes interesting and clients constantly progressing. If you are looking to reach your fitness goals in a smart, achievable way in an inclusive, welcoming environment, Steelworks is certainly the gym for you!
Fantastic experience: I will admit, I was hesitant to return to a gym at first. Not just because of a pandemic raging and sickness being something none of us want but because I had stopped for so long I was afraid of the work going back into it after most of a year off. Brian made it so easy to get back in and to check my ego at the door. Steelworks Strength Systems makes functional fitness fun and not just a competition or something to impress people with. I've enjoyed my days so far at Steelworks and can't see myself going anywhere else. Thanks Brian!
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a group fitness member of Steelworks for nearly 3 years now and I continue to be impressed with the owner, Brian’s commitment to each individual’s physical condition and mentality during our workout sessions. It’s not easy to instruct a variety of personalities and fitness levels while monitoring form and function for safety and keeping the group motivated and fun all within an hour time-frame...and yet our workouts flow seamlessly. As an avid (yet aging 46yr old) ball hockey athlete I joined the gym to help tone and keep my muscles agile. I rarely used free weights before and found that with Brian’s continued patience I am enjoying the technical challenge of heavy lifting in a safe environment and also enjoying the results. I don’t have lower back pain or strains like I used to and I have strength and agility gains that help me in my sport. If I miss a day or two of working out due to vacation or work obligations I can’t wait to get back. Brian hires like-minded instructors if he is unable to teach a class and I feel confident that I am getting a good quality workout with someone who supports me and shares Brian’s values.
Fantastic experience: Brian is awesome! He and everyone else at Steelworks make you feel welcome and part of the team from the moment you step in the gym. It is a great group of people all excited to encourage one another. Whether you are an experienced athlete or just starting your fitness journey Brian knows how to make it a great workout for everyone. 5/5 would recommend!
Fantastic experience: Brewerytowns best kept secret!!! The workouts are well programmed & encouraging. The staff is professional, personable and proficient.Brian takes the time to explain and demonstrate every workout along with observing & giving pointers to help correct the movements. The community here is extremely welcoming, friendly and motivating. If you’re looking for a great workout that motivates you to keep coming back for more, this is the place to be!
Fantastic experience: Brian is an incredible coach and is very attune to the needs of each individual athlete. I was considering suspending my membership after getting into a biking accident, and Brian convinced me to tough it out and altered training modalities for all phases of my recovery (on crutches, in a boot, in a soft cast etc.). Steelworks is a hidden gem in the philly strength community where technical performance and form are constantly evaluated and improved. As an added bonus, fellow athletes are kind, motivated, and always willing to lend a hand.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks Strength Systems is a thoughtfully curated gym where members of all different strength levels are welcomed with open arms. Brian takes the guesswork out of each daily workout to ensure the maximum results for all clients. The extended coaching staff alongside Brian are individuals who are tremendously knowledgeable and helpful. The gym's environment is also reflective of the upbeat and positive members that attend every week. What sets Steelworks apart from other gyms is the work ethic, mindset, and strength process Brian instills. Programs are thoughtfully mapped out to ensure clients continue to improve on all different types of movements.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym! Really great support and willingness to work with you. For someone just getting back into the gym, Steel Works has fostered a good environment to support positive and healthy growth. Even for those who've already been long time members, they all say that if you stick with Steel Works you'll see the results. Friendly staff who are eager to assist. I can't recommend this gym enough. Brian is the best even at 6am
Fantastic experience: I just finished an amazing series of classes with Brian--and I would continue except that I am moving too far away. Brian is patient and always tailored the exercises for me when I was unable to do so. This was a class for seniors and he pushed me just enough to try and do more. In fact, I am going to look for a gym in my new area--although I think it will be very hard to match up with this experience! I can't say enough good things about this gym and Brian. Take the leap and try it out--I know you will enjoy it! FYI--as a senior, this is the first excercise class i have enjoyed, I always dropped out of the other classes.
Fantastic experience: I joined about a two months ago and have definitely been enjoying the experience. The place is located right on the corner of Girard and College Ave. so there is a bunch of foot traffic and that's how I originally came across this place. Inside it's a fairly big open space with set ups for racks, rings, rowers all available. I have been going to the strength and conditioning classes but there are ones for straight weightlifting as well as classes for the older crowd. Brian, the gym owner, is the heart of the whole operation. He does a great job of putting together programs that are challenging and different. The workouts always have a theme to pull the moves together usually either concentrating on different body parts and/or concepts (balance, agility, speed, etc.) Will continue to come here and get my sweat on! Looking forward to the challenges and really push myself!
Fantastic experience: Fun, engaging, and challenging gym. Brian is careful to correct form and offers advice and alternatives when needed. I would recommend that anyone who wants a more personal training experience join this gym.
Fantastic experience: For anyone who is looking for unique and quality programming, Steelworks is the place for you. As a CrossFitter who wanted to get some weightlifting (my weaknesses) work in, I couldn't have found a better spot. I've primarily worked with Brian, and he's made it so easy to come at convenient times, great feedback, and great programming. Within just a few weeks I was seeing major improvements from cues I had never heard elsewhere. Highly recommend to anyone who's looking for a tough workout and especially to improve form, technique, and strength.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is great. I had been working out on my own and getting decent results but the instruction available and great atmosphere at Steelworks has definitely brought my workouts to another level while making them more enjoyable. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to improve their routine, regardless of skill level.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is a great gym not only for improving your fitness, but your overall wellness. Coach Brian has a wealth of knowledge in multiple schools of training, and blends them together into unique and effective programs for each individual. I was very impressed that he was able to work around (and even help fix!) some old injuries while helping me refine my form and upgrade my routine. I found the workouts challenging and am happy with the results. Steelworks is different from the many crossfit gyms in the city, although there are some crossfit type movements. The workouts I did had elements designed to improve movement patterns, motor function, breathing, cardiovascular endurance, and strength, among others. I only did personal training with Brian, but it appears that the group workouts are similarly arranged. I'd recommend this place to athletes of all skill levels.
Fantastic experience: I have been going to this gym for roughly 7 months now and I couldn't be happier! This program provides high quality workouts, a focus on personal development, and a fun team-like environment. Brian, the main course administrator, offers substantial advice and encouragement throughout the course of each four-week program. For each program, Brian curates a series of interconnected workouts which collectively target a specific muscle group. I look forward to every class!
Fantastic experience: Brian, the owner, is a great coach. I had very minimal gym or lifting experience before starting my membership but Brian was patience and attentive in helping me work on my form and build strength. Each class is well thought out and planned ahead of time by Brian, so you know you're getting a good work out. This is not an intimidating or scary gym - there is a real sense of community and Brian makes it a priority each class to make everyone feel welcomed and comfortable.
Fantastic experience: Both the group classes and personal training is top notch! The vibe of the gym is one of a kind! All skill/strength and fitness levels are able to work side by side encouraging each other without embarrassment or being self conscious. Sessions are thoughtfully curated to allow physical and mental progress each block and the successes are consistent motivators to keep pushing forward. Highly recommend to anyone at any fitness level that wants to improve their fitness level in both strength and endurance.
Fantastic experience: Steelworks is an energetic, welcoming environment for people of all fitness levels. Every workout is designed to push you beyond your perceived limits and is scaled up or scaled down so that everyone can participate. The focus of each workout is proper form, support for each other, and personal improvement. A class atmosphere can seem intimidating, but you’re put at ease in the first minute of class when every other participant will come up and introduce themselves. The coaches are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fanatical about safety. The sign-up process was unlike any other gym experience I’ve had. No pressure, no games, just an upfront explanation of the different pricing options, and an invitation to come try it out. It’s not for everyone and they know that. But if you’re looking for an engaging and high-intensity gym experience (and the chance to meet some friends along the way), I can’t recommend Steelworks enough.
Fantastic experience: As a guy that does not particularly love to work out, Brian made coming back to the gym fun again and most importantly I got results. I did not participate in their classes, and instead opted for private training lessons with Brian himself. First time in a long time I looked forward to going to the gym...workout were great and Brian is a fun guy to chat with in between sets. Wouldn’t hesitate for a second to give Brian and his gym a go.
Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality Always left feeling like I had a great workout. The workouts are intense but they are fun. Great people at Steelworks! Brian does a great job encouraging and engaging people and creating a welcoming environment for all fitness levels. The workouts are very creative and they get results. Highly recommend this gym
Fantastic experience: Steelworks has extremely knowledgeable, dedicated coaches who go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and encouraged. Both coaches and clients are very friendly and welcoming, creating a non-intimidating gym experience. Every workout is carefully planned and can be scaled to your fitness level. The coaches demonstrate and provide feedback every step of the way, making the workouts stress-free yet challenging. Steelworks is truly a unique and enjoyable gym experience.
Fantastic experience: I joined almost a year ago and can't say enough positive things about the community at Steelworks. The coaches are all very knowledgeable and encouraging. I remember being nervous as someone new to lifting and have made so much progress since. This is also the first time I've been able to maintain a consistent and healthy workout routine. Most of all, the other members are welcoming and have made my overall experience so great.
Fantastic experience: I always felt uncomfortable at other gyms but never have I felt more accepted and excited by a group than I have at Steelworks. I am constantly challenged, educated and always leave feeling like a champion. When I start to doubt my own capabilities during a workout, it is immediately shutout by uplifting and encouraging voices from my coach and my fellow members. So if you're looking for meatheads then this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a strengthening gym that treats you like family, then Steelworks is absolutely right for you.
Fantastic experience: I have been going to Steelworks Strength Systems for 10 months now and I am very pleased of the progress I've achieved as well as how much I really enjoy working out. I always look forward to the classes and getting better everyday. Working out has always been a struggle for me. I did not grow up playing sports or having an active lifestyle. However, as I grew older, I realized I need some exercise to stay healthy and fit. I've tried going to a traditional gyms (I get bored and confused) and home workouts (I had to stop because my downstairs neighbors complained of noise) but have always had a hard time sticking with any program. I was initially apprehensive and scared of doing "crossfit" style workouts and Olympic lifts but decided to try Steelworks Strengths and I'm glad I did. The people at Steelworks is the difference maker. I have found Brian and the other coaches always present and knowledgeable. They break down all the exercises so it is easy to follow. They focus on good form and technique which makes every movement efficient and injuries avoidable. Every class is different (not boring) yet challenging for everyone. The steelworks community is a great group of very encouraging and supportive people, both in and out of the gym. I have found a good place and community for me to pursue my fitness journey. I truly enjoy working out at Steelworks Strength Systems and I recommend it anyone who wants to get serious about their health and fitness whatever skill, experience they may have. Do it!
Fantastic experience: Steelworks Strength Systems is amazing. Brian and all the coaches are able to scale each workout to any fitness level; in less than three weeks, I am doing things I thought would take me months to accomplish. The workouts are a challenge but approachable. Guys, this is my first time trying CrossFit and my first time working out in over three years. Your hardest step might be your first step through the front door, but I promise you won't regret it! I'm making friends and having fun. Joining Steelworks is one of the best things I've done for myself since moving to Philly.
Fantastic experience: I first came to Steelworks back in January 2016, and as I approach my 5 month anniversary since starting at the gym, I can happily say that I made a good decision to join! My experience may be different from some of the other athletes at the gym in that Steelworks is not my primary training facility; I am a rower and came here looking for coached lifting workouts to supplement my rowing training and keep me stronger/injury free. In the ~1.5 years between graduating from college and joining Steelworks, I had tried lifting on my own at more "traditional" gyms but 1) I had a hard time motivating myself to lift on my own, 2) I quickly got bored doing the same routine over & over, and 3) I didn't feel safe pushing myself to max out on heavy lifts, especially if I wasn't sure my form was 100% correct. I know that I do best in coached environments, so I scheduled a meeting with Brian to talk about my goals. I'm doing a second year of service right now, so I definitely didn't take costs lightly, but for what you get I think the programming is well worth the money; Brian encouraged me to give it at least 3 months, and I'm glad I did! I'm impressed by the individualized approach he takes with all athletes at the gym, which is partially facilitated by the small class sizes but also by Brian's interest and personal investment in each athlete, whether their goals are oriented toward general fitness, improvement in other sports, or competing in the sport of Crossfit. I definitely approached Crossfit with a healthy skepticism (my previous impression was that it's a bunch of people throwing weights around un-safely), but any stereotypes are definitely not the case at Steelworks. Brian has helped me to improve my form on lifts & is diligent with all the gym's athletes about performing lifts properly to prevent injury (I really appreciate that he and all the coaches break each workout down by demonstrating proper technique before each component of the workout). I also greatly appreciate how supportive Brian and all the staff were when I experienced some injuries along the way (caused largely by underlying weaknesses), and they have helped me to return to form by modifying workouts as needed so that I can still participate and gain strength. I may not be lifting huge weights (yet!), but I know my form is good under their watchful eye and that I'm getting stronger by doing things the right way. One last important thing: this gym is FUN and a great community! I hate the snobbery that can happen at some gyms (and I've been to a bunch) with people trying to keep up impressions, etc., but I love that we start every workout at Steelworks getting to know each other and continue to support each other during the workouts. Plus, there are other social events organized by the gym & informal opportunities that members organize (like a weekly evening running club). If you want to feel unmotivated, bored, or any other similar emotions, join a "regular" gym and lift on your own... but if you want to be inspired, coached, pushed to your limits, and stronger than you've been before, join Steelworks!
