Hangar 18 Indoor Climbing Gym - Long Beach: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Held my daughter's birthday party here Sunday. We had the best time! (Only down fall was it was extremely hot inside the gym!) The staff was so friendly and helpful. They made the day very special for her and her guest. We had WAY more people show up than expected, the staff didn't miss a beat! Angela inspired my daughter so much, that now she is signing up for the Youth team at the gym. Thank you so much for making her birthday so wonderful.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff. 2 large clean bathrooms. Good hang board area and auto belay. Lots of fresh air circulating and fun crowd. I enjoy the problems and the place seems safe.
Fantastic experience: A pleasant climbing place. I had fun there for the first 101 class.
Fantastic experience: Small but awesome bouldering problems! Had a great time here- only visiting from out of town but would definitely come back again. Super friendly staff and very nice community.
Fantastic experience: Good atmosphere, beginner-friendly, affordable.
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome! Friendly and helpful staff, top ropes, auto-belay, and bouldering, with a full training section too. Memberships are reasonably priced and the intro classes include a day pass so you can climb until your hands give up. Shoutout to Rachel who taught my partner and I how to top rope and auto-belay, as well as gave some solid gear recommendations. Thanks for making our times at Hanger 18 fun and memorable! They also have a few drinks and snacks available, along with tape, chalk, and some other climbing essentials. Rental gear is available for a small fee, but included in your intro class.
Fantastic experience: I had such a great time here! Everything is labeled well so you know the different levels of the walls, there a different area that offer some variety to what you can do, and the staff is super friendly and incredibly helpful! As long as their not busy teaching classes or taking care of other duties, they are always willing to help everyone out. This isn’t the biggest place I’ve seen, but it is still an amazing choice if you want to go climbing in Long Beach.
Fantastic experience: Great prices, sick climbs
Fantastic experience: Favorite Hangar 18 location with great problems (V0-V3) for beginner climbers. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful! Not as crowded as the Orange location with plenty parking spots. Will definitely come back.
Fantastic experience: Pros: Good boulder settings. The top rope routes are great for boulderers trying to get into roped climbing. There is parking. Cons: Can't change the incline on the training board. Definitely needs more fans. Or AC. I can't imagine boiling here in the summer. Overall it's a solid climbing gym!
Fantastic experience: This is one of my closest Hangar 18s, and it's my favorite one to go to. I only do bouldering, so I can't speak to the auto-belay or top-roping. It's smaller than Orange and Hawthorne, but the sets are great. I like the progression of the difficulties. It makes more sense to me here than at the other gyms. The staff are friendly. The restrooms are clean. The mats are well-maintained. There's plenty of parking. I also like the people who come here. Most of the people who come around are friendly, and that makes me more comfortable as a newer climber.
Positive experience: Great gym. Staff are friendly. Routes aren't that challenging but it works for Long Beach. If would be great if the gym members would just learn how to flush after urinating. It's so "great" to walk into the bathroom after somebody and see the toilet filled with urine. I mean how hard is it to flush. It's not like you're not gonna wash your hands after climbing.
Fantastic experience: Can’t beat the prices at Hangar 18. The routes are constantly updated to keep it interesting. They have some auto belays and a small section of top roping/lead climbing. Everything you need without having to shell out $85/mo like other gyms if you’re okay with the size exchange (and no sauna and bigger gym). The employees are very friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: Amazing, planned to stay for 1 hour and a half and ended up staying for over 3 hours, so fun and would go again
Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality , Value This facility is excellent. The equipment is in great condition. It smells really good which is weird for a gym. The lockers require that guests bring their own lock and a thinner lock is better. Shoes are $3 to rent. I really liked working with Sloan and suggest asking for her if she’s not up front.
Fantastic experience: Awesome climbing gym. I've been a on and off climber there for a couple years now.
Fantastic experience: Excited to improve on my upper body strength and climb!
Fantastic experience: Love it! Took 8- and 14-year olds and had a blast. Auto belay is great for learning. Nice staff and great atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: A great rock climbing gym. Very nice people and community, regularly changing courses.
Fantastic experience: This is the best place I have ever been to that have lots of fun rock climbing courses to do I love this place so so much
Fantastic experience: Climbers and staff seem a lot less pretentious than other places I’ve been to but these are definitely rated less difficult than they really are. Recommend this place for people that have been climbing for a bit, not new climbers.
Fantastic experience: 2 for 1 deal on Tuesday!! What a fun experience. Wow ! We were lucky to have taken the intro class with Mark and he was a great instructor. He took his time explaining the safety steps and showing us the ropes - literally! Lol He was fantastic. He was very careful and waited with us until we got a hang of the whole thing. And after 30 minutes we were doing our own buckling and climbings. Having this deal really is a great opportunity, especially for beginnings, to try it out to see if they like it. The day pass is $33 per person, but like I said on Tuesday's its 2 for the price of 1. And the membership is $36, so for $3 more you get to have a whole month pass with unlimited climbers and yoga classes. I highly recommend this place or their many other locations.
Fantastic experience: Smaller than the South Bay location, but it does have a room for yoga classes, which is also kind of small. The yoga class on Sundays 6:30-7:30p is VERY RELAXING. The parking lot is directly outside and the atmosphere of this long beach location is so therapeutic.
Fantastic experience: The best climbing gym I know. Outstanding staff who are able to instruct and support everyone from kids to advanced climbers. Plenty of room for both climbing and bouldering.
Fantastic experience: I love this place excellent customer service. Very good place to get your exercise on.
Fantastic experience: Awesome staff, fun climbs, and great vibes all around make Hangar 18 Long Beach one of the best Hangar 18 gyms by far! I've been bouldering and top roping for years now and I always find myself going to Hangar 18 because they are one of the most affordable climbing gyms in SoCal. Some of the Hangar locations are better than others due to overall maintenance and staff. This location is definitely a lot more well maintained, and is also one of the newest locations. The crash pads are thick and don't look like they are falling apart. There's an even number of top roping and bouldering areas, and the overall layout of the climbing gym is very welcoming. It feels a lot more open and less claustrophobic when there's more people around... My friends and I came to utilize our monthly membership that was ending and I finally convinced them to take a belaying class, since they're the only been doing bouldering. The staff were more than happy to assist us and let us use the rental equipment. They were patient and really helpful in walking us through each step, with adequate time to practice tying the figure 8 knot and appropriate usage of the Grigri top roping device. After top roping for about an hour we did some bouldering and the other members of the gym were so supportive and helpful in helping us through certain routes we were stuck at. Everyone seems to treat each other like family here which is really awesome. If I didn't live so far away I think I'd definitely become a regular here!
Fantastic experience: What a cool place. The staff is polite, the climbing community is awesome and the facility is what's clean. I love how often they change the routes. We bring the whole family 6 to 43 years old and never feel out of place. I do recommend you go as early as you can. The place gets packed in the evenings. Unless you are looking for a cool place to hangout.
Fantastic experience: Me and the gf tried out the gym and had a fantastic time! We were really nervous at first but our instructor was really friendly and patient with us. By the end of the day our group was exhausted and extremely satisfied with our experience!
Fantastic experience: I love working out here. I have a blast with my wife and we always feel like we get a solid amount of exercise. Would recommend for dates, families, and even solo time.
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym company! Wish they had more Nationwide. When the kids would come over the summer it got pretty crowded- but affordable clean and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Clean place, great staff! Lots of fun!
Fantastic experience: I'm a newer climber. The equipment and staff helped put me at ease, which is important to me considering I'm trusting the equipment to keep me safe. They're constantly changing the challenges, so it's never the same thing twice, and I've seen intermediate and advanced climbers being challenged on their climbs as well. Solid spot.
Fantastic experience: This place is small and it feels crowded and cramped. The people here however are very kind and generous; full of adventure. I had a great time climbing here and they offer fun for all skill levels. It was pretty cheap too!
Fantastic experience: Great place to experience climbing. Great for the newest beginner to advanced.
Fantastic experience: Decent sized. Wouldn't say big at all. No AC. But climbing you can do!
Fantastic experience: This place is pretty sweet. Good for beginners and good climbers alike.
Fantastic experience: Great beginning climbing gym! I have been able to use this gym to get to the next level in my climbing. I feel it's been a great little local gym. It's best for bouldering here!
Fantastic experience: I came here for the first time a couple days ago and the staff did a great job at making me feel welcome here. I was initially going to get a day pass just to try it out, but then they told me I was probably better off signing up for a month *FOR JUST 5 DOLLARS* as opposed to paying quadruple that, for a day pass and rental. I gladly obliged and after my first experience climbing, I'm sure it won't be my last.
Fantastic experience: I had my 27th Birthday Party here. The staff was helpful and encouraging, the walls were challenging but doable to a bunch of newcomers as well as the more experienced, the place was clean, well lit, and well maintained. I look forward to visiting again in the future!
Fantastic experience: Great little gym! It's not as big or flashy as some of the gyms in LA, but they also aren't charging $80 a month or an initiation fee. I think a lot of the negative reviews on here might be from a while ago, because the gym has changed quite a bit over the past year. They've made a lot of improvement on both the climbing holds and the route setting. They reset a large swath of holds (approx 20-30 ft wide) every Monday so the gym is constantly changing. They're also continually adding new styles of holds. Some of them I've never encountered at any other gym. The grading is on the stiff side. After climbing here for a while I started checking out other gyms, and realized that routes are typically a full grade lower (v4 here is about v5 at most other gyms). Staff is friendly, and so are the local climbers. Amenities aside from climbing are pretty minimal, but they do have yoga classes for members. They've started setting a World Cup problem as well for those who want to test their skills against the pros. Good luck!
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff. Friendly people. Great climbs.
Fantastic experience: Good place for beginners. Staff is very laid back and willing to help. Can get very busy during the evening weekdays. Bouldering can get crowded but everyone is willing to take turns in spaces. Also great for kids! Saw toddlers climbing walls and kids having fun. Also has a small gym area and yoga classes.
Fantastic experience: Great atmospher, they change the climbs alot and good music to chill and climb too.
Fantastic experience: My home away from home. Great employees, superb setters, and a fun atmosphere. I suggest giving it chance and setting low expectations. The worse case scenario is thinking that there is a worse case scenario.
Fantastic experience: Employees are chill and will help out with any questions. Dog friendly, noob friendly, and family friendly.
Fantastic experience: Great staff, great community. All around an enjoyable place for climbing
Fantastic experience: Hangar 18 hires really cool employees who are both kind and smart. Andre, the manager, is a good guy and makes these gyms really shine.
Fantastic experience: Great place to just start climbing. Community there is open and helpful. Front desk people are chill and nice.
Fantastic experience: I've been coming to this gym for about 8 years off and on. It's now owned by hanger, but still in a great location with varying routes about every 1-2 weeks. Can get hot during the summer
Fantastic experience: Cheap annual membership, routes changed weekly. A bit on the strengthy dude though. Big moves and lots of dynos.
Fantastic experience: Welcome to our fortress tall, take some time to show you round, impossible to break these walls, where you see the steel is much too strong, computer banks to rule the world, instruments to sight the stars, possibly I've seen too much Hangar 18 I've known too much.
