Movement Crystal City: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Nice variety of climbs and boulder problems, good vibes. Love the free cold brew!
Fantastic experience: Great place for indoor rock climbing. Spacious, good route setting
Fantastic experience: Definitely the best of the DMV-area climbing gyms. Easy to access via Metro or by parking in the attached parking garage. Routes are updated on a regular schedule and the walls/holds are kept clean!
Fantastic experience: Massive gym with a great variety of routes. I haven't been able to go enough to comment on staff and community, but the technical aspects of the gym are top-notch.
Fantastic experience: Beginner climber so thought I'd pop in while on a business trip. Very clean facility with great customer service, fully gym facilities and locker rooms. Boulder problems were challenging and ran the gamut of difficulty. Will definitely be back when I make it back to D.C.
Fantastic experience: Movement was a great place to climb. There were plenty of routes for all skill levels. Avery was five stars as he showed us how to tie our knots and encouraged us on how to successfully make it to the top. Facility was clean, staff friendly and parking garage easily accessible. We will return and bring the kids next time.
Fantastic experience: Many routes and regular new routes every week. Great top rope, lead, and boulder problems. Staff is friendly/helpful. Locker room is nice as well.
Fantastic experience: A very large, super clean, spacious and friendly gym. So many options, easy garage parking and I liked the clothing and equipment for sale too. As a beginner, I’d def visit again
Fantastic experience: Great climbing and gym facilities, friendly staff, but expensive; still worth it though!
Fantastic experience: Great gym and even better staff. You can rapidly start climbing in a positive atmosphere. The other amenities and equipment are great as well. If you're looking at other gyms you need to check this one out before committing.
Fantastic experience: Love coming here! Yogis and climbing instructors are attentive and knowledgeable. Plenty of routes of varying levels. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: NO AUTO-BELAYS AT THIS LOCATION Other than that, I stopped through here on my way from Colorado so, understand that is my reference point; big rock, lots of gyms, Olympic walls, etc.... THIS place was surprisingly amazing! Tons of wall space and friendly climbers. I'm not reviewing the staff because I didn't pay to meet them, I paid to climb, and these walls/routes are first rate.
Fantastic experience: This gym is EXCELLENT. I have been bouldering for ~8 years, been a member of 5 different gyms, and have climbed at countless others- this gym is my favorite so far. Not only is the location amazing (near 2 Metro stations, Pentagon City and Crystal City) but the gym itself and the staff are all incredible. Location: The location is so accessible to anyone. If you prefer to drive, there is an underground garage, and parking is validated, so it's free for users of the gym, and free on weekends. If you prefer to use the metro, there are two train stations, both about ~7-10 min walking distance The Gym: The gym itself is absolutely incredible, huge, and has all the amenities a climber could want. The bouldering areas are really well put together, spacious, and lots of varied climbing. There is a separate area for belaying, WITH free classes to get your belaying cert. There is a separate kids area, which is great for everyone's safety, and a great experience for adult climbers. There are also yoga and exercise classes which come with a monthly or annual pass. There is ALSO an exercise/training area with probably well over 30 machines (I haven't counted), squat racks, free weights, pull up area, "light board" for grip training, finger and grip racks, jump ropes TRX bands like, literally, you name it, they got it. The locker rooms are always clean, have a TON of storage lockers, and even a shower The Staff: Since day 1, the staff members have been warm, welcoming, and just dope overall. Everyone is nice and so inviting. This is literally the best climbing/gym experience I've ever had.
Fantastic experience: I used to climb here regularly before moving out of state and it is easily my favorite climbing gym I’ve been to. It’s massive with a huge variety of sport and bouldering routes that get updated consistently. I mostly bouldered so can’t speak too much for the sport climbing section, but in the bouldering area there was a great variety of different skill levels and often very creative and fun problems that got you thinking outside the box to work through them. There’s a huge gym area with fitness classes and a store for climbing gear and snacks. The staff is incredibly friendly and there’s a lovely community here. I found it very easy to make friends and find new people to climb with. There was a culture of helping each other figure things out and a sense of camaraderie. I miss everyone here dearly!
Fantastic experience: I always enjoy climbing here. There are so many routes, some just for lead, the bouldering area is large, and the gym area is well equipped. FYI, some recent reviews are grumbling about how the gym's current mask rule is "oppressive" or "ruins the experience". I don't need to see everyone's mouth to have a fun climbing experience, climbing with masks isn't a burden, and there is plenty of evidence that masks help reduce viral load. That's important for the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike.
Fantastic experience: Great selection of bouldering, I haven’t even gotten to try their large ropes section. Good exercise equipment, the folks that work there are very sweet, people who come are super chill, and they require everyone where masks, regardless of vaccine status, esp. with omicron now breaking through boostered folks this is such an important thing!
Fantastic experience: Really big gym with bouldering area, top rope, and lead walls. most people are really nice there, and friendly. Problems are really well set. Currently the grading has quite the range. That being said , a lot of different style of climbs you can find within one grade.
Fantastic experience: I love Earth Treks! A very good atmosphere, the staff are nice, the grades seem reasonable, and parking is free on weekedns and past 4. The bouldering and lead/topeope areas are both big, and i would definitely reccomend thia place to anyone, new or expert climbers
Fantastic experience: Can't say enough about the customer service quality here. New bouldering problems up every few weeks, I don't do as much as much top rope climbing here but the facilities are top notch on that side of the gym too. Money well spent.
Fantastic experience: Love Earth Treks! The staff are all super friendly and helpful, and the yoga classes are fantastic. They replace a section of the bouldering wall twice!! a week (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) so I never get too bored. And the weightlifting/gym area is decent, enough of what I need. Just wish they didn't get rid of the movable arm cable machine, then it would have been perfect!
Fantastic experience: Always have been a fan of Earth Treks. I started climbing about 5 years ago with Columbia, before they remodeled. I fell in love with the workout! I've been to all of their gyms, even out in Colorado and they're all pretty nice. Some are dated now but getting better. The staff at every location is stellar, like none other. So friendly and helpful. This location in particularly in Crystal is pretty nice. It's in the basement of an office building, but still rather large inside. They charge a tad more for this location but really I feel you're only paying because of its location. I still prefer Columbia over Crystal but that's not to say they aren't a great gym because they are. There's lead, top rope, and bouldering with a decent regular gym section as well. They change the routes on the wall regularly so you don't get too tired of it. I just went back for my first time since COVID hit and I'm quite impressed. They have one way in and one way out of the gym. Everyone is wearing a mask including climbers. The bathrooms are open and there's sanitizer everywhere. The locker and shower areas are closed but that's expected. There's also a live capacity tracker online and you can make reservations during their busier times (required actually). If you haven't been back or never tried, I recommend it.
Fantastic experience: I love Earth Treks so much! I've been going for the last 2-3 years now. I love the community and the facility. the staff are super polite and inclusive. The classes are top-notch in my opinion. The ropes part of the gym is well maintained, the clips, ropes, and belay devices are all in great condition. The certifications are required and you need to take a class for Top Roping, Lead Climbing, and Lead Belaying. Each class is about an hour long and there is a practical application part to each test. For the top-rope belay and climbing test you don't actually belay anybody or climb, you prove that you can catch an unexpected fall. The climbing section you have to show that you can tie a figure-8 follow through knot which is the knot you have to use at all ET branches. 10/10 recommendation!!
Fantastic experience: Love this place - I’m a relatively olderish, newish climber and they are unfailingly helpful, supportive, encouraging, and welcoming. For the last few months I’ve had a coach, Wendy, and I absolutely can not say enough about her. Her intuition about what to say when, really challenging me to be a better climber while helping me completely value the climber I am today, and the steady stream of solid technical resources and guidance make her an absolute professional who I trust implicitly and just plain enjoy being around. Go there if you have even an inkling of interest!!
Fantastic experience: Love earth treks. Great walls with interesting routes that change frequently. One thing that could be improved is the gym there, there is only a single mirror in the corner so only one person can use it at a time so you can't really check your own form.
Fantastic experience: The gym is clean and the community is friendly. I love the setters. They set up interesting climbs and the rate of new climbs is good.
Fantastic experience: I would call this skill-based exercise, excellent to develop hand strength, hand to eye coordination, flexibility and leg strength. It's an interesting change of pace from the standard exercise routines and I would highly recommend trying it and incorporating it into one's exercise repoirtoire for not only fitness but to improve balance and strength in an array of other muscles in ways you normally don't use. Great for young kids as well especially if rock climbing is something they might like to do as sport in the future.
Fantastic experience: Great employees, clean gym, fun and friendly climbers. Excellent for true beginners and skilled individuals. It was so much fun even though the place was fairly busy. Could be ever so slightly better air conditioned but hey it's a gym.
Fantastic experience: The best climbing gym in the DMV area! The members and staff are super friendly and helpful. Their locker rooms, gym area and climbing walls are state of the art, you don't need even to bring those old metal locks for climbing, you can just set up a PIN on the locker door. They also have regular social events that are always a success. The location is also great, but sometimes parking can be limited, so I recommend taking the Metro whenever possible.
Fantastic experience: Great Cancellation Policy! After moving to a location that made it difficult for me get to the gym regularly, I had cancel, which is a total bummer considering the facility is world class. As I approached the counter to cancel on the last day of the month, I expected the runaround and fees that are typical of membership clubs. Instead, the staff member let me know that my membership would end tomorrow - no strings attached. Amazing staff, world class facility, and they continually reinvest into the community and gym. Get a membership and climb frequently, you wont regret it!
Fantastic experience: I brought my son for the first time ever on Saturday and cannot be happier. The place is great; even though it was busy there was still room and time to climb. My son is 6 and Monique was SO amazing with him. She was very patient and kind and motivated him to get all the way to the top of the climbs. We are definitely getting a membership!
Fantastic experience: Reservations are required during peak times but they keep the crowds at a safe level and everyone is good about wearing masks. Great climbing gym and I’m so happy they were only closed for a few months.
Fantastic experience: Good stuff!
Fantastic experience: Great place, great people
Fantastic experience: I love this place. The facility is clean and well taken care of, there are a ton of routes (bouldering, too rope, and lead), they have a nice selection of snacks and drinks, as well as climbing equipment and apparel, but NONE OF IT compares to how incredibly, ridiculously, unrealistically nice and helpful the employees are. It's like they train them in a top secret research facility dedicated to customer service and pleasantness. I honestly don't know how it's possible that I've interacted with at least 10 separate employees and have had memorably positive experiences with every single one. If you're a beginner, this is a great place for you. If you're not a beginner, this is also the place for you. Seriously, you owe it to yourself to check this place out.
Fantastic experience: I’m giving this review after having visited several other climbing gyms across the country. We are spoiled at ET crystal city with regular updates to both the rope and bouldering areas (both of which are huge), a great fitness/free weight area and awesome yoga classes. This really is a top notch climbing gym and the staff are all super friendly as well.
Fantastic experience: This is a great indoor rock climbing space AND fitness gym. This location also sells rock climbing gear, such as the shoes, harnesses, and even healthy food snacks. Not only that, this facility is also worth noting as being kid-friendly. We visited to celebrate a friend's 9yr-old birthday party and all of the kids had a blast scaling the walls made with the right difficulty for their age and size. Moreover, the staff were very down to earth, patient, and attentive to all of the kids and "bigger kids" in our group. We look forward to to coming back and bringing the kids so they can relive this amazing experience. So, if you're looking for a new activity to do as a single, with a group and or with the kids this is the place to come to. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that there's an underground parking garage connected to the building to make this an accessible place as well.
Fantastic experience: Great space. The routes are reset enough to not get bored but giving you enough time to project things a little bit. Bike racks in the car park and free parking after 4pm and on weekends. Solid gym equipment and lots of classes, plenty of yoga and climbing instruction. Happy climbing.
Fantastic experience: Great facility. Their exercise area is large, so you could definitely have just a membership here without having to get a second membership for a gymnasium. Some of their holds seem a little worn, but I only explored their bouldering area. It's clean and the staff are very kind and accommodating.
Fantastic experience: This Gym is fantastic : quite big, well equipped, really clean and has, last but not least, a super team! I began to climb here 2 months ago and I really regret that I cannot continue (I'm moving back to Europe)... Their classes are great too : introduction to top rope climbing, bouldering and movement, core burn and of course yoga (I had a crush for Winny's class : really challenging and perfect to improve your strength and your balance)! Definitely the place to climb (and not only)!
Fantastic experience: Bouldered here for several months. This is literally the perfect gym (especially as compared to the 3 good, but not great gyms in the south I've climbed at over the last few years). Great location, free parking (past 4 pm), massive bouldering space, variety of types of routes (slopey, crimpy, big moves, technical, etc), great gradation of difficulty (aka no inexplicably massive jump from v2 to v3, appropriately massive jump between 4 and 6), fun setting, well maintained facilities, and friendly staff. Prices are expensive, but I get enough value out of it that I think it's justified. Hands down my favorite setting of any gym I've climbed at.
Fantastic experience: Me and my boyfriend had a great time here. We have 0 experience with rock climbing, but the staff was great in helping us have a successful first trip. We had a friendly instructor, Alex, who went above and beyond for us. He gave us great tips at mastering each course. A couple times I wanted to give up, but he was really good at guiding me through the tough parts and encouraging us to keep going. Afterwards we got a tour of the beautiful impressive clean facility. We will definitely be back, and we encourage anyone to try it, as it accommodates everyone from beginner to expert.
Fantastic experience: I love this place! I live 4 hours away and wish I were closer. I have even thought about getting a membership if I were able to get here a few times a month. My partner was bouldering while I was there and hurt her ankle real bad. I share this because all of the staff were very very helpful, caring and accommodating. They kept checking in on her and took the whole thing very seriously. I would definitely recommend this gym to ALL climbers and non-climbers. What a dreamy place to have so much space, equipment and classes. Thanks!
Fantastic experience: I was in town visiting friend and decided check this lace out since it was highly recommended. Definitely fell in love with this gym. Huge tall walls which made for great climbing. They also had into routes which was great for my friends since they have never climbed before. Which we had a gym like this back in CT.
Fantastic experience: Probably the best climbing gym in the US East Coast. And I’m saying this as an Italian rock climber (especially in the Dolomites). Proud to be a member. Top.
Fantastic experience: Very big gym with some great Boulder routes! I wish I was staying for another day way to much to climb in one night! Well thought out problems and even a competition style at that according to locals gets reset every 1-2 weeks. I unfortunately didn't get to climb the ropes so I can't comment on the routes but there was plenty of routes
Fantastic experience: Has substantial lead, top rope, and bouldering sections. The setters create a variety of styles and they set a good mix of grades for all levels. I love the walls, they have a more rock-like form than plywood walls I've seen at other gyms. Training area in the back is also great, and they have a full weight setup and treadmills. I haven't taken any of their non-climbing classes, but I know they have core and yoga as well. Their Rendezvous on the third Friday every month is really fun! Free unlimited beer once you are finished climbing.
Fantastic experience: An awesome gym with lots of wall space! The lead section is huge with so many cool overhung routes! If you like to boulder there are more problems than you can ever dream of finishing! Earth treks also offers really good fitness and yoga classes to members.
Fantastic experience: Lovely climbing gym with plenty of classes for all skill types
Fantastic experience: This gym has everything you could need. Yoga classes, core classes, treadmills, free weights, and the list goes on. The staff is amazing and always helpful. It gets really busy on weeknights from 6 - 7:30, so come early or stay late. The climbing is awesome!
Fantastic experience: Such a cool place. Way bigger than you'd think. Clean facility and everyone I've met is super nice. Huge Top roping and lead climbing area along with a large Bouldering section as well. Full gym of weights and cardio equipment. Specialized training area for climbing specifics workouts. Various classes are also offers and a nice little store with climbing gear, some clothing and snacks and drinks. Lockable lockers and showers along with a million open cubbies through the gym. Go check it out, amazing fun.
Fantastic experience: Expect a great time climbing here. The walls are terrific, the setting is terrific, and the staff is terrific. The facility is always clean, but often feels packed with the after work crowd. The bouldering area has a huge variety of routes ranging from v.intro to v.13 with enough of everything to keep newbies and veterans entertained every day. The ropes area has as much variety as the bouldering area, with top rope and sport climbs ranging from 5.intro to 5.13. Finally, they have a decent amount of gear for sale. Many types of shoes, ropes, and harnesses. You can't go wrong climbing here.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful, massive facility; that never feels crowded. It's funny how rock gyms tend to take up a massive amount of space but can be very hard to spot from the street. Crystal City is no exception; they have some nice signage but it's lost in a sea of office buildings. Parking is available in the garage; it's either free or deeply discounted depending on when you go. The walls themselves are awesome; tons of climbing. I've been 5 times now and have probably only climbed about 1/2 of the routes. Their is a massive area for lead only and it is epic. The bouldering cave just keeps going and going and going. If you are visiting DC from out of town Crystal City is full of hotels and it would be easy to strategically locate yourself near this location.
