Our comment from FitFit United States about Somerville YMCA:
Welcome to the Somerville YMCA, a community staple known for its friendly staff and wide range of facilities and programs. Visitors have praised the center for its excellent swimming pool, clean locker rooms, and a well-equipped gym that provides all the basics one might need. Many families appreciate the engaging adult and child programs, particularly the gymnastics and aquatics classes, which benefit from dedicated and caring instructors.
Despite ongoing renovations, the atmosphere remains vibrant, with a strong sense of community among members. Many patrons enjoy the social environment and have experienced friendly interactions with the staff, who are often described as warm, helpful, and professional.
However, some feedback has highlighted several areas for improvement. Members have expressed concerns regarding the scheduling of lap swim sessions that may not accommodate typical work hours and have reported overcrowding during peak times. Additionally, there have been complaints regarding the maintenance of certain facilities, particularly the basketball courts, which some have found to be hazardous due to poor conditions.
Overall, while the Somerville YMCA faces certain challenges, it remains a valuable resource for those seeking a fitness center that prioritizes community values and offers a supportive environment for individuals and families alike.
Somerville YMCA: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Very good for learning
Thanks for the 5-star review Swathi!
Fantastic experience: Great staff. Despite in the middle of renovations, the place still hummed along nicely. Pool was great, locker rooms were clean.
Thank you for the 5-star review Keith. This feedback is incredibly helpful as we navigate renovations.
Negative experience: Pool schedule for lap swim is impossible to work with if you have a normal work schedule. Gym is littered with groups of people crowding equipment and loitering, staff does nothing to address this issue. A staff member was very rude to us during check in one day, was screaming down the stairway at us. After numerous unpleasant experiences, we’ve decided to cancel our family subscription. During the cancel attempt, we were told we need to submit a paper form with 30 days notice to cancel the service. This makes absolutely no sense, if we can sign on with a couple clicks online, we should be able to cancel with such ease too. Oh and by the way, you’re paying $100+ for this service for a pool you can never use, an unmanaged gym, staff members with power trips, and group classes that lack time slots. There was a higher expectation for the YMCA due to their history of community engagement and family resources. But these beliefs feel no longer expressed at this location.
Kuba, your feedback is helpful and we appreciate you bringing your concerns to our attention. Please reach out to us at [email protected] so we can learn more and address this directly.
Positive experience: Ive been going for almost 2 years. Mainly use the weight room and I don’t need a lot, and it has all the basics. I’m coming from Lifetime prior to this and it’s not comparable, but neither is the price point. I have my family of 4 and my mother on my plan for a hundred less than just me at lifetime. Doesn’t have the bells and whistles but has enough equipment to keep myself in every bit as good shape as other places. After school hours (3-5) can be a bit like the Wild West. Random duels, overcrowded at times, and occasionally some tumbleweed blowing around. All staff I’ve interacted with are friendly and polite. I have my daughter in the gymnastics program, which has been good. You can also use the membership to sign in at other Ys, which is super convenient when traveling. Overall represents value for money.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, Owen! We’re so glad to hear you and your family are enjoying the Y’s programs, equipment, and the added benefit of access to Ys when traveling. We also appreciate your feedback about peak hours in the wellness center — we’re always looking for ways to improve the member experience and will keep this in mind. It’s wonderful to know our staff and gymnastics program have made a positive impact. We’re grateful to have you and your family as part of our Y community!
Negative experience: I came to swim, they said its gonna be a half our wait because of the rain which i get, then it got delayed longer and when i finally went to the pool none of the lanes were open other than for the kids and for the swim team. Wasted my time for nothing so disappointed.
Hello Marsella, we understand your frustration and your feedback is helpful as we navigate scheduling and communication. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] to discuss further.
Negative experience: Earlier today, I brought my son to the pool area, as I have done many times before. Upon arrival, Brian stopped me to ask for my name and informed me that my child’s class schedule had changed — a change that I was never informed about in advance. This lack of communication is unacceptable. More disturbingly, I was told that my son and daughter could no longer attend the same swim session because "classes cannot be mixed," even though they have been participating together for over a month without issue. The sudden enforcement of this rule, without warning or explanation, felt arbitrary and unfair. It gave me the impression that we were being singled out. What made this feeling stronger was the treatment we received while watching the class. I sat on a bench near the pool to observe my children, only to be told by the director that I had to move to the other side of the facility. However, a white parent was allowed to remain in the same area and was seen chatting comfortably with Brian until her child's class ended. This double standard is glaring and deeply upsetting. I cannot help but feel that my family and I were treated differently because of our race. The inconsistent application of rules, the abrupt and unjustified changes, and the differential treatment compared to white families are unacceptable. This experience was not only frustrating — it was humiliating and hurtful. update:Two weeks have passed and they haven't made any updates. Last Monday when I took my child to learn swimming, Brian deliberately stood in front of me to block my view, seemingly provoking. It seems they don't care about customers' feelings at all. I won't come here again. If you check the historical records, you'll find many comments involving racial discrimination. This place is really bad.
Thank you for sharing your feedback Thankee. The Y is committed to ensuring that all individuals are welcomed and treated with respect, and we do not tolerate racism or discriminatory behavior of any kind. We take concerns like this very seriously. A member of our leadership team is reviewing the situation closely and will be reaching out directly to better understand what occurred and help ensure clarity and consistency moving forward.

Thank you for your 5-star review Pat! We're glad to hear you're enjoying our aqua classes and gym! We're also thrilled to hear our staff is wonderful and the social environment is nice! We hope that's what everyone wants

Fantastic experience: Great staff, gym, pool and Sauna is icing on the cake
Nimesh, thanks so much for the kind words! We're so glad you're enjoying the gym, pool, and sauna (the icing on the cake). The Y works hard to create a welcoming space, and it means a lot to know it's making a difference.

Negative experience: Last week I went to play basketball with some friends and the basketball courts were horrible. There were a ton of dead spots and my buddies and I were sliding all over the place. It was a horrible sports experience. The courts weren’t even waxed and this caused for all of us to be falling and slipping left and right. Apart from the basketball court the staff was actually amazing, I was greeted by the front staff Kayla and Jackie and had a great conversation. Later as my buddies and I were playing, Jamie came over to check on how we were doing because it the first time we were here. The staff was the sweetest but its safe to say my buddies and I wont be coming back.
Jayden, we're sorry to hear about your experience with the basketball courts but happy to hear that you’ve had a great experience with our staff, they truly make a difference at our Y. Ensuring safety and enjoyment of our facility is top priority and we take concerns like this seriously. If you’d like to discuss this further or share more details, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
Negative experience: Jamie, Jackie and Kayla are amazing g staff members but I play basketball every Wednesdays and Fridays and the floors need renovations. Please do something about this. Thanks
Thank you for your feedback Michael! We're happy to hear that you’ve had a great experience with Jamie, Jackie, and Kayla—they truly make a difference at the Y. We understand your concerns about the basketball court floors and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Our team is always working to maintain and improve our facilities, and we’d love the opportunity to discuss your concerns further. Please reach out to us at [email protected]. Your membership and experience at the Y matter to us!
Negative experience: The floor of the basketball court is extremely poorly maintained. I am extremely hesitant to break out in a full sprint, in new indoor basketball shoes, because I’m afraid I will hurt myself on the floor. Whether it’s rolling my ankle, or slipping and falling flat on my face. There’s no need for me to be afraid to run on an indoor basketball court.
Joseph, we're sorry to hear about your experience with the basketball courts. Ensuring our members are safely enjoying our facility is top priority and we take concerns like this seriously. If you’d like to discuss this further or share more details, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
Negative experience: I have been coming here for a year. The place is filthy and poorly maintained. I use the sauna (when it works) regularly. There was a bottle cap there for over a month. At some point I am going to remove it because I removed two pieces of plastics and a discarded sanitary napkin sticker after seeing them in the sauna for a month. When I use the fitness center, on the occasion that I use the treadmill, there are layers of dust on the front mechanical section of the treadmill. I have been wiping the one I use. On the floor around the equipment, there are dust bunnies visible to the naked eye. That is just poor cleaning. Or no cleaning at all. Janu 28, 2025, Adding to my review from last week: I received a response from the YMCA from this review. I sent an email to YMCA based on the response. I have not heard back from the management team. The bottle cap is still in the sauna. No one has gone in to pick it up. The dust bunnies are still visible. And the sauna did not work today. And the broken toilet has been broken for over 3 weeks in the women's locker room.
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns Zi-Le. At the Y, maintaining a clean, vibrant facility for our members is a top priority.
Your feedback helps us to ensure we’re implementing measures to address these areas promptly. If you’re open to it, we’d like to discuss your concerns. Please feel free to reach out to us directly at [email protected]. Thank you for being a member at Somerville YMCA and we look forward to hearing from you.
Positive experience: The place is a little old but has everything you need. 25 meter pool, 3 1/2 to 9 feet deep, adult and children locker rooms, gymnasium and gymnastics
Wow Abdelazim, thank you so much for your review and adding such wonderful photos of our facility! We’re glad you find Somerville YMCA well-equipped and appreciate its features. While it's true, the Y may show its age in places, we’re always working to maintain and improve the space for our members. Your feedback is appreciated, and we hope you continue to enjoy all that we offer!
Negative experience: Basketball courts are poorly maintained. Always dusty which is hazardous for the people who are actually trying to play. I think it’s irresponsible to neglect the court maintenance because it is an injury waiting to happen. I would rather chose any other location to visit instead.
Hello Alec, we're sorry to hear about your experience with the basketball courts. Member safety and enjoyment are top priorities at the Y and we take concerns like this seriously. If you’d like to discuss this further or share more details, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Staff are amazing!!! Just hope the courts get remade! Lots of people would come in
Justin, thank you so much for your kind words about our staff—they’ll be thrilled to hear it! We appreciate your feedback about the courts as well. Your suggestion is noted. Thanks again for your support, and we’re excited to keep seeing you here!
Negative experience: The basketball court flooring is horrible, i've rolled my ankles many times and no shoes ever have grip on the courts. There are many dead spots that make the court dangerous and hard to play and have fun without worrying about injuries.
Thank you for sharing your concerns about the basketball court Jorge. We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and understand how important it is to have a safe and enjoyable space for play. Your safety is our priority, and we take this feedback seriously at the Y. If you’d like to discuss this further or share more details, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
Negative experience: Staff were incredibly rude. Had my daughter come to take a swim exam. When she was visibly struggling in the water, lifeguards did nothing other than to laugh at her and talk to the coach's assistant while continuing to laugh at her and not help. Definitely do not recommend this place at all.
Hi Mendes, thanks for your feedback. We consistently evaluate our Aquatics staff and programs to ensure they are meeting the needs of our members, and hearing from you is part of that ongoing assessment.
Please email us at [email protected] to share more about your experience. We look forward to learning how we can better serve our communities.
Positive experience: Good YMCA unit, slightly older than some close ones but with a good staff.
Fantastic experience: I loved it for my Kids
Negative experience: La limpieza no es buena , no le prestan atención a las máquinas .las sillas llevan mucho tiempo rotas y aún no las reparan
Fantastic experience: The somerville y is an incredible place. check it out. Something for everyone
Fantastic experience: Kids are learning in a way best for them with great guidance.
Fantastic experience: Great place!!! Proposing for the the YMCA in Somerville to have more aquatic classes , but have them be in the evenings so EVEN those who work or go to a day hab program during the day can participate also.
Negative experience: Staff specifically lifeguard was rude and disrespectful during our visit ..
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout with family and friends. Friendly staff and members inspire us to frequent the place.
Fantastic experience: Excellent gymnastics program for young men and women,
Fantastic experience: We love to go at the Y, my daughter who is 5 started swimming lessons in May and now she can swim on her own. The only thing I should point out is the fact that she has been changing teachers very often, I wish she had a permanent teacher who gets to know her as well the rest of the group. Besides that this, it was the best choice I have made. I tried other schools and I stayed with the Y.
Fantastic experience: Did a great job
Fantastic experience: I love our local Y! My husband and I workout together, and it’s nice to see all walks of life, and ages, in the gym doing their best.
Fantastic experience: The Somerville YMCA has changed my whole entire life. I have read through some of the comments, BOY are people tough to please! This place has opened so many doors for all types of ethnicities. I read that the guards are "racist" how? Lol, if only you knew. This place has given my child the GREATEST gift, swimming. Those people really CARE, they go above and beyond. They always have food for the children during school breaks, they are an ear to listen on a hectic day, & they have a "Young Achievers Program" for middle/High School children. Not only that, they're hosting an LGBTQ Pride cook-out in June. They're doing things for Juneteenth, they're celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in September... They celebrate the Asian cultures. They give for Christmas This place is so AMAZING! It's like they, the complainers, expect it to operate on LA Fitness or Planet Fitness time. If you don't want a structured community family environment, then maybe this place isn't for you. Yes renovations are sometimes needed, isn't this why our streets are ALL being gutted out for the pipe replacement mission? Or your vehicle if you have one? Let us not forget about our homes etc. I love Jesus with EVERYTHING in me, but it's like those with the negative reviews expect the Somerville YMCA to turn water into wine. HOW? They're not him! If it were up to me, i'm going to ALWAYS suggest ALL of the community join the Somerville YMCA!!!
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and nice updated facility. I love going to the Somerville YMCA. It's a great place for a workout.
Fantastic experience: Everyone was warm and helpful at the Somerville YMCA, and our daughter really loves Coach Emily for swim class!
Negative experience: Steam room is out of order for 2 weeks now!!! That's why most men go there for get it fixed!!!
Fantastic experience: Amazing service
Fantastic experience: Very welcoming, and a beautiful facility. We are pleased with the range of activities available for all ages and abilities. Community spirit is exceptional.
Fantastic experience: The facility is clean and the classes are enjoyable.
Negative experience: Pathetic and rude employees. I have been going there along with my 11 YO for years, my daughter learnt swimming there and loves (LOVED) YMCA.. unless this happened. Today, while about to getting in the pool, we were stopped by a lifeguard. She was rude and informed about changes to their policies, that won't allow anyone under 13 for laps! While on the other lanes, smaller kids were going through lessons.. is this not discrimination??? SO only if you are paying for lessons, you can, but if someone knows swimming and accompanied by parents cannot take laps?? When I spoke to the front desk, they just defended stating that I was notified via text, which I NEVER received and there was no manager ("Director") on premise to speak to.. Pretty much the attitude was "take it or leave it" .. we left, with a heavy heart, we decided to cancel my age old relationship with YMCA. It is unfortunate how they have changed and became, very unfriendly and discriminating..
Fantastic experience: Somerville YMCA has knowledgeable and friendly staff. They make you feel as part of their family.
Fantastic experience: I love the Y and all it's caring people. thank you for your help!
Fantastic experience: send reputation photos
Positive experience: tomorrow. kind just
Positive experience: leaflet attachment. attachment
Negative experience: it is how offer
Fantastic experience: late his The
Positive experience: brother. was let
Positive experience: brochure wonderful queries.
Positive experience: Intercontinental cooperation writing
Fantastic experience: Overall well maintained, all facilities available to use fromGym, swimming pool, Sauna, Steam room, ball, badminton etc besides plethora of classes. Instructors are friendly.
Fantastic experience: As a woman with rheumatoid arthritis, the Somerville Y's warm pool is literally my lifeline. I have been going to this Y for 10 years and find the staff friendly and helpful. They were GREAT during the pandemic; they really accommodated swimmers safely, w. easy scheduling of lanes. I have also noticed in the years I have attended this Y how well they connect to the community w. food drives, teen nights, daycare — they are a vital part of a healthy town.
Thank you so much for this review. We are so happy to be here for you and the Somerville community. Thank for your being a valued member!
Fantastic experience: I have had a wonderful experience working with the YMCA- Somerville afterschool program. My son has attended for almost two years now and really lkes it. This program provides transportation from the school to the YMCA which was absolutely necessary for me. The staff members are all very helpful and keep the children entertained with various activities. I especially appreciated the homework club which made sure the kids did thier homework while at the YMCA. I would and have recommended the YMCA afterschool program to family and friends.
Fantastic experience: Love the Somerville YMCA membership staff
Negative experience: I joined this gym because of the steam room and sauna but mostly for the steam room. Unfortunately, that steam room is always out of service. Very frustrating. Women locker room doesn’t have a scale. This place needs to step up their game. Very disappointed.
Positive experience: Gym is simple, small, can do almost everything. Only issue I had was a worker being very disrespectful & unprofessional to a group of teenagers lifting weights few minutes before closing
Fantastic experience: We love having a community gym where we can swim, work out, and have our daughter take classes like gymnastics.
Fantastic experience: This place rules. good place to get into shape
Negative experience: AWFUL FACILITIES. I had a Y membership for years, and thought I could expect a similar experience here - boy was I wrong. No availability for adult lap swim (except for before 7am and after 7pm) no ability to reserve lanes, pool was probably 90 degrees f from all the little kid pee. Shocked this place hasn’t been condemned by the health department.
Negative experience: Agree with the racism in this place. It was also very clear that it is uncomfortable for little kids. They are not kid friendly and have uptight people working in a community environment setting. I personally had to explain to my kids that they are not being rude just trying to work. Good luck but would not recommend. Much better experience in the other ymca further away. Not coming back to this one for sure.
Negative experience: The worst management I never seen. I reported to the pool director regards to the lifeguard who yelled at my 4 years old child. Without of finding out exactly what happened, he already decided what happened in his head and proceeded to tell me his opinion.
Negative experience: The facilities are good except your experience may be ruined by a middle age racist lifeguard here who takes it out on children. I'm rather surprised being that there's such a diverse community here.
Positive experience: Everywhere its air conditioned except for the pool, so when you get in the water its extremely warm. When you open the door to the locker room, it has pressure so its hard to open, then you get hit with a huge blast of cold air.
Negative experience: Discrimination in swimming pool! my son was doing honest lap swim and he was stopped by elderly lady.Same lady allowed other white girl to swim and not my son. I have also shown this to lifeguard and staff. Clear case of discrimination !
Positive experience: Everywhere its air conditioned except for the pool, so when you get in the water its extremely warm. When you open the door to the locker room, it has pressure so its hard to open, then you get hit with a huge blast of cold air.
Positive experience: Everywhere its air conditioned except for the pool, so when you get in the water its extremely warm. When you open the door to the locker room, it has pressure so its hard to open, then you get hit with a huge blast of cold air.
Negative experience: Credit card was charged without my consent. I put my membership on hold and it automatically started charging me membership fee again without my permission.
Fantastic experience: Thank you Christina Huang for helping me a lot so my kids have opportunity to enjoy the facility. As Chinese with language deficiency she help me translate language with patient.
Fantastic experience: Nice facilities and kind people.
Fantastic experience: I enjoy the cycling classes and POUND for a good stress relief and sweat and Candlelight Yoga for relaxation. I’ve signed up for the small group compound lifting class that’s been very helpful in increasing my confidence to lift in the wellness center. Sauna and steam at the Y has become a part of my weekly routine and I love it!
Fantastic experience: Great staff, great for the family,. Good stuff !
Positive experience: The people at the front desk are nice and the locker room is ok
Fantastic experience: Exercise at the newly renovated gym everyday. Showers , spa and steam rooms were added . Lockers and dressing rooms are new. Nice atmosphere. Staffs are great. N
Negative experience: Tried to cancel my membership on 11/30/ Phone were down and i was unable to reach anyone. I called 12/1 and was told i will be charged for December and January as they require 30 day cancellation notice and since December has already started they will charge for January as well. When i signed up i was not 1. explained about 30 day cancellation policy and 2. i was prorated for the month i signed up. Not sure why the same can be applied at cancellation. Anyway, not using this facility again. they charge an arm and a leg and do not offer much. Group classes schedule kept being changed, was over crowded. They need better management.
Hello. We apologize for the inconvenience as this is not the member experience we strive for. Please know that our Membership Director is aware and will be calling to remedy the situation immediately. Thank you and take care.
Negative experience: I cancelled my membership after they made me leave the building because I was wearing sports bra. It was very embarrassing since I worked out dressed like that for over a year at this gym and all of a sudden this manager comes to me in front of everybody saying that I was “making the members uncomfortable “. Now I workout at a gym where everyone can wear whatever they want, it doesn’t matter the age, type of body or anything. I’m way happier now!
Hi Edna. We looked and do not have any record of you being a member here at Somerville YMCA in Somerville, NJ. We're sorry to hear you did not have a good experience where you went. If you are in New Jersey in the Somerville area, please feel free to stop by! Thanks and take care.
Negative experience: This place is very racist and doesn't like anybody who isn't Caucasian! A bunch of Trump Supporters who are don't want any children but their own in their camp! Stay far away from these racist!
Negative experience: Racist places! Stay far away!
Positive experience: The people at the front desk are nice and the locker room is ok
Negative experience: There’s nothing to to if you’re 11 and one of the worker yell at a little kid really hard and he started crying.
Negative experience: I’m 56, got sick after swimming. The water feels freezing.
Negative experience: I wish there was more lanes available to public :-(
Negative experience: the water is so cold
Negative experience: Lifeguards are constantly chatting and laughing, not care about the safety of the kids...... So not professional :-(
Fantastic experience: I’ve had a few friends work at the Somerville YMCA over the last few years and the way they talked about it encouraged me to work there over the summer, and the let me tell you the hype is real. The atmosphere there is so encouraging and inviting that I felt at home the second I walked in the door and I got a membership there the second summer ended just so i could be there more often. The after-school staff really knows the kids that come in and are so warm and welcoming to new kids, I recommend every family should enroll their kids in the after-school program just so they can interact with the staff they have. And ever since they got their new gym equipment and facilities, it feels like the whole place got a total facelift and is even better than it already was. A-plus YMCA!
Fantastic experience: Good facility and staff
Fantastic experience: Nice place for kids learning
Fantastic experience: Very nice YMCA with friendly staff.
Positive experience: My 3yr old loved the gymnastics and swimming lessons. The staff was polite and professional, and my daughter definately learned from them while enjoying herself. We’ve also rented a room for birthday parties, they do an amazing job. Theres better places out there for sure, but in terms of bang-for-your-buck, you cant beat the Y. The give you a bunch of balls, hola hoops, a parachute, and a few highschoolers to toddler-wrangle for you. The kids all had a complete blast. Many reviews point out the building is old and in need of an update - it is - but the kids dont even notice that. I keep renewing my membership.
Negative experience: Terrible place.. we are members here and usualy go for swimming over the weekend. And every time, it’s terrible. I am just walking out, we came for family swim this afternoon. They had just two lanes open! There were 14 people in that lane. How would uou even stand there.. What did they smoke for such planning!! This is the situation for almost all weeks. I reached the front desk and they refused to help.. Terrible place and terrible staff.. Please avoid this center.
Negative experience: Received a phone call & a voicemail about cancellation of my Child activity today be cuz they’re use the place for gym. Call back and this lady name Joyce had a nasty bad customer service on the phone. First of all when you calling people for cancellation you might wanted to tell them too how you handle that.. either give us credit or make up for your canceling something that is already paid full for. Not came up with “oh we are not sure” or “we don’t know” none of that is answer will help. So before the boss tell you what to do find the solutions too. If you wanted the money we wanted the class to be happen too. Not just calling people when the money is paid to cancel be cause the place need to use for other activities, is really not my problem. And with that customer service front desk attitude make it the worse of the situation. So not professional at all. Maybe the Y need to hire people that appreciate parents or customers better. You guys need us otherwise you won’t have a job cuz the company don’t have customers to pay you. Simple as that. This is why and how make people pissed off. Bad customer service!
Negative experience: People are nice. The monthly payments is expensive $62.00 month. You better of going to other gym for the price. They have a nice pool and gym.
Positive experience: Nice YMCA
Fantastic experience: Great place to unwind..swim...play basketball...weight room..parties..and more.
Positive experience: I take my daughter for gymnastics and taekwando. The teachers are nice and the people at the front desk. They offer good programs. However the place definitely needs a building makeover. Its smells old and has old equipment .
Fantastic experience: Great gymnastics program, great staff!
