Kankakee Area YMCA: Opinions
Negative experience: The bathroom smells " fresh"
Fantastic experience: Helpful staff great place to exercise and enjoy personal health growth. There is something for everyone here all ages.. great family time.
Negative experience: My children purchased a gift certificate for me at this facility for christmas. When I went in to sign up. They told me I had a balance that I wasn't aware of. Back in July my card canceled out due to fraud activity with my bank. I did not realize that if I did not use the facility that they would continue to charge me.. Although it was my mistake and misunderstanding, I tried to explain my thoughts and circumstances to the ceo of the ymca. At first I dealt with a membership employee who sits near the front desk where members enter. This person told me they could not take the charge off. I did speak with the director, downstairs in regards to the family issues and hardship I was going through at the time. She was very understanding and told me that she would speak to someone above her and get back to me.. In the meantime the same, employee that was not going to help me, knew I had gone above her. She phoned me back to tell me that the other person said that they weren't going to take the charge off.. I was very surprised as I had not even attended the ymca at the time of the charge. I told this employee that (in my opinion seemed upset because I was going above her), I would come in person to speak to someone. She took it upon herself to go to the CEO and gave him her side of my situation. When I went to the offices upstairs and came in the doors, He approached me and called me by name. I was very surprised that he knew my name but later, found out that this woman downstairs went up to talk to him. From the beginning of our conversation, The c e o was very arrogant, had no empathy toward me or my situation/feelings. Had there been some sort of understanding and kindness, I would have been happy to pay what they wanted. His attitude toward me was that of I was below him, and I was a bad girl. He basically scolded me for not realizing I would get charged if I did not personally cancel my membership. At the time back in the summer, I had some personal issues out of state with an estranged daughter that I was trying to resolve. I also had other personal issues financially, due to my husband's illness. My daughter was getting married, and my mind was in many places. I truly did not realize what the policies were at that time. I am 64 years old, (not to play dumb or the old card) bit I truly didn't realize I would continue to be charged. I asked the c e o if he could please refund my children for the gift certificate they purchased....which exceeded 300.00. He arrogantly refused and told me that that is not their policy. I have no choice but to attend this facility, which I have attended my whole life and felt very comfortable. I told the staff that I was not comfortable and did not want to attend here.. I was laughed at and forced to use the gift certificate here. It has been over a month and I do not feel comfortable. I feel like my money was taken from me and forced to go there for my health needs. I am not sure what has happened with the rule of understanding and reason. I did not intentionally try to hurt anyone or do anything illegal. I would think that there would be understanding and kindness when people need it. This is supposed to be a Christian organization. I would never treat anyone the way that I was treated.
Negative experience: Very disappointed with this YMCA’s fitness Center at the moment
Negative experience: I'm writing to express concern regarding a discrepancy between the YMCA membership handbook and the recent denial of access to my guest. According to the handbook, members are allowed to bring a one-day guest without specifying residency requirements. However, when I attempted to bring my guest, they were denied access. I believe this inconsistency warrants an update to the handbook to reflect the actual policies and procedures. To ensure clarity and fairness for future members and guests, I recommend revising the handbook to explicitly state any residency or other requirements for guest access.
Negative experience: They leave garbage all over the park to blow into our yards everyday. I've called on numerous occasions talked to ceo Will Welch left messages with others about my complaints but it seems to be ignored so I'm guessing their teaching the kids that it's okay to litter and not pick up after yourself. So APPARENTLY according to their response it's ok to leave the garbage all over the park for the wind to blow it all over our yards street so that way everyone else has to pick it up BRILLIANT.while they pick it up once late in the afternoon after the wind blows it away and they pick up the leftovers BRILLIANT wouldn't it be easier to make sure its put in it's proper place and teach your 200 children not to litter right off the start and yes its A INCONVENIENCE PICKING UP YOUR GARBAGE EVERYDAY MONDAY-FRIDAY 4 new pictures added at 7pm on 7//26/23 doesn't look like late afternoon picking up
Good afternoon. We host summer camp for three months every summer for over 200 children and clean up happens every afternoon. Sorry we inconvenienced you.
Negative experience: The YMCA daycare providers were mistreating the children. On the morning of 2/27/24 I showed up to pick up the papers to enroll my babies for childcare. The side door was open which is extremely dangerous .When I walked down the hallway looking for someone that works there I witnessed one of the providers verbally abusing the children. 5-6 children were in high chairs with no food or toys. They were all in their high chairs crying and screaming and the provider was angrily yelling at them “That’s enough!” I was shocked and appalled. I got out of there with my babies.
Fantastic experience: Nice facilities and friendly staff!
Positive experience: Nice place to work out.
Thank you Mark for the review! We try to make the Y a place everyone can enjoy!
Negative experience: The YMCA is an okay place, but some of the employees are gossipers. And the excersie trainer, in the gym, the old Caucasian man, looks creepy. Some of the employees should be replaced, by new fresh ppl.
Fantastic experience: Love the fact that the facility has a sauna and a steam room!
Fantastic experience: I love this place
Positive experience: Not the cleanest facility for some reason they can't seem to get that part right after many many years but other then that it's a nice facility for families
Positive experience: One lady there had a bad attitude she ignored me
Fantastic experience: I always go here and the staff are always welcoming and friendly
Negative experience: As me and my child were there I noticed a women sitting behind the desk near the counter. Her name was I believe spelled Othella. I noticed she wasn't wearing a mask while interacting with the public. I asked her why she was not wearing her mask she set for medical reasons yet she pointed out next to her desk was a mask. I asked her why would you carry a mask it for medical reasons you did not need to wear one? Another manager came out from the back and said she does not need to give you any reasons. I then asked her why did she not wear a face shield? She responded with is there anything else I can help you with?. I proceeded to cancel membership for me and my kid in will never be going there again good luck.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, lots of family activities, so affordable!
Fantastic experience: Love the staff and programs for kiddos!
Negative experience: The lifeguards are very rude and not consistent with their rules. Also the pool has way to much chlorine in it. Everyone in my family had an allergic reaction from the water.
Negative experience: Horrible service .
Negative experience: Every time I went in to do Zumba or Yoga the schedules were always wrong. I even went to the front desk twice complaining about the schedules being wrong and they gave me the “updated schedule” but that was still wrong!! I recently moved and went to cancel my membership and they didn’t tell me that I have to cancel it 10 days in advance so they still charged me for this month. I called and asked why I was charged and the guy I talked to was very snotty and really did not care. Very bad experience would not recommend. Wish I could give 0 stars
Negative experience: I use to enjoy taking my child there, but theres to much gossip that goes on with the employees, especially in the swimming pool area.
Negative experience: Rant: I just received a phone call from the Kankakee YMCA and I was told that my son will be kicked out of the spring break program for the rest of this week and come pick him up now. The ultimate reason why he was kicked out is for non-payment from some stupid fee from over 2 years ago for $87. And she proceeded to apologize for the oversight of allowing me to sign him up for spring break she will gladly refund me the two days left in the week. This is a total shock and sends a poor message that children will be turned away for inability to pay, but if you notice the YMCA motto no child ever turned away for inability to pay ..."We build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities." This is bologna So I am going to take my refund for the remaining days and pay her stupid $87 fee. I will never return to the YMCA again! I will never refer families or speak highly of them. I wonder how many other families will be kick out?
Fantastic experience: I been at this gym for several years. I really love the family like feeling they have established here. The only thing I would like to see if more updates in the locker rooms, more adult sports, and extended hours. Everything is excellent!
Negative experience: The YMCA has been an amazing place in the past. I’ve had great experiences until today. I was in the gym playing basketball and an employee, I’m assuming one of the shift managers, came in and stated that the bag on the floor in the gym had to be removed. The item was not mine so I continued playing basketball. After we were done playing basketball my friend and I went to workout as we usually do. It wasnt until later I realized I left my wind breaker in the gym, so after I worked out with my buddy I went to go grab it. It was missing so I went to the front desk to ask if they had a lost and found. One of the employees(who is always respectful and helpful)warned that it may be in the office, and that I may not get it back until tomorrow due to this employee being in an aggressive mood. I thought this was ridiculous, but remained polite and calm and asked the employee to take me to the office so I could grab my wind breaker. We entered the office and I was confronted by a lady who asked if it was all my stuff in the gym. I stated no ma’am it was not, again remaining calm and respectful as to not make her feel like I was causing trouble. She then replied that I was the one who rolled my eyes at her when she asked to get the bag (the bag that wasn’t mine) I then respectfully stated that I did not roll my eyes at her. She continued to say that my YMCA entry key was going to be suspended for a 24 hour period. I was very shocked and asked if there was anyone else I could talk to about this. Just then a man came in and I asked why I was getting banned. He stated that any personal belongings in the gym is a instant 24 hour ban. I was in shock after this. I asked my friends if I was disrespectful to this women at all when she came into ask about the bag. They all stated that it wasn’t the case. This women lied about my actions and was very disrespectful to me. I will not be attending the YMCA after this. I wish there was someone of bigger authority I could talk to about this issue. I have never even been warned by any employee about leaving my jacket on the side while I play basketball. I also am very respectful to every employee at the YMCA. This women should not be in any authority as she is very disrespectful and lied about my actions. It was also stated by another employee this is not the only issue guests have had with this women.
Positive experience: they have a very nice weight room but honestly they need to invest in a deadlift platform and at least one more squat rack. I'd like somewhere to be able to do good barbell training but it can't be the Y if people are going to tell me the deadlift is "too loud"
Negative experience: Terrible managers. They are rasicst and disrespectful at the pool. Very rude manager and One of the life guards. Never had a good day at the pool because i’d always get picked at and get told to get out of the pool. very disrespectful at the pool area. it’s always 2 white woman againts a whole different race family everyday. never got respect.
Negative experience: When I had a membership here, it was pretty good. I took swimming lessons here at the time because I couldn't swim. The first time I passed, but the second level up, the entire class failed even though everyone improved. I think that time there were so many people in the class (15+ kids, crammed into two lanes) that the quality of swimming education between one or two instructors was greatly diminished. Might I add that I was twelve, and I was swimming with mostly six year olds. There should be different levels, but also different age groups, like 0-2, 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12 before the teen classes. A star off for making it really awkward, and since I have rather long legs occasionally I would splash or kick a five year old on accident, the age gap was awful. The pools are nice, as well as their other facilities. But when I'm taking a shower and a family of roaches walks by or underneath my locker one would come out of nowhere, that's just plain gross. Star off. They also no longer offer day passes which is a HUGE let-down for me as there is no other pool open this summer and other teens like myself are dangerously swimming in the river. For this reason, I mark two stars off just for that. However, I noticed how friendly the children's center staff were when I walked in there one day, and saw how well maintained and fun it looked (if I was eight). I add a star for that. Overall, I give the K3 YMCA two stars.
Positive experience: Nice place to visit! Parking is good!
Negative experience: Rip Off. & There are Big Cockroaches..
Hi Taylor,
We're sorry to hear your experience with our YMCA was not enjoyable. We have a professional exterminator that comes through the building regularly to keep bugs away. Unfortunately, we cannot control when bugs come in due to rain but our maintenance staff does their best to keep the facility clean!
If you have any other concerns, please contact our YMCA at 815-933-1741.
Thank you!
Positive experience: Its a nice YMCA! The equipment is old and for anyone looking to lift or do any kind if a barbell workout bring your own clips!!! They have only one free weight squat rack(*leg press and assisted pull up machine). This YMCA also has a pool which is a nice cool down workout. Must have photo I'd with membership card and this YMCA does provide a towel service. Other things worth mentioning there is a lengthy bike trail on the north end of the Kankakee river(10+ miles) that is nearby. Plenty of parking for semi truck(Bob tail).
Positive experience: My family loves the Y I can work out while the children have the pool, gameroom, camp, and so much more. I love the friendly and family orientated environment. No entry without ID love it.
Negative experience: I took my family to try a day pass before we signed up for membership, the kid's were excited to go swimming. I filled out a tour card and my husband had his ID but I didn't have mine so we were refused entry. I had my birth certificate and social security card and marriage license but she informed me these would not work because I could have stolen them. then she told me an employee let someone in that was a sex offender with no ID and was insinuating that I could also be a sex offender... I will not be joining and I will be sharing my experience with everyone I know.
Hi Matthew,
We're sorry to hear your experience with our YMCA was not enjoyable. We do have a strict policy of not allowing any guests 16 and older into the facility without a photo I.D. for the safety of our members, guests and especially children. Our staff do the best they can to enforce this policy, but we apologize for any unacceptable behavior. Please feel free to contact our Membership Director with more details at 815-933-1741 ext. 233.
