Colorado Athletic Club Boulder: Opinions

Negative experience: The BLAST child care at the Boulder CAC does not meet the engagement needs of children. It's a small room with toys. Maybe appropriate for 1 year olds and younger, but that's it. We'll go back to Lifetime where they offer structured and engaging kid classes in the gym and have two legitimate play structures - one indoor and one outdoor. We might be interested in joining in the future once the childcare facility and program is significantly improved.

Positive experience: We have been members of the Boulder CAC since inception more than 11 years ago. (We also were members of the DTC CAC.) The Club did fall short during and for a period after the pandemic. But during the past six months, we have seen a turn around at the club. The staff is engaged and responsive, more and more people have joined or re-joined, and the pre-pandemic energy is being restored. The equipment is by and large first rate and more and more amenities (e.g. massages) and classes are being offered. It is a great place to workout during the autumn and winter seasons. Parking is close and easy. The cafe and its owner are a real plus--great and appropriate choices for pre and post workout snacks.

Negative experience: Was a member when they opened and just rejoined this summer for the pool. Maintenance & cleanliness are an issue. Over priced for a once stellar club.

Whitney James 2 years ago

Negative experience: I'm very sorry to leave a negative review for CAC, as I've been a member here for over a decade and have really loved having them as my gym. Unfortunately though, my feedback mirrors that of many others—their cancellation policy is very strict and unforgiving, even if you've paid them over $13,000 in membership dues over the years. (I was a few days late on the 30-day cancellation policy, and they would NOT make an exception even given my longstanding membership.) It just seemed like very poor customer service and left a bad taste in my mouth. You would imagine with this many poor reviews they would be looking for ways to improve!

Negative experience: This club SUCKS!! The pool is reserved from 5-7:30 PM tonight and many days during prime hours…between Masters and swim teams, long time regular members cannot get a lane. They are selling every last inch they can to monetize and screwing long time members. And they do not care because they have the nicest pool in town. How about a little balance or lower regular member fees? If you’re seeing this, do not join this club unless you don’t want to swim at convenient hours Or you want to pay extra to swim

Fantastic experience: i LOVE the colorado athletic club! i’m not sure why it gets negative reviews on here. any of the staff i have encountered since joining have been great. i have been here since 2019 and absolutely love the sauna. the hot tub area, steam room, sauna, and pool options are AWESOME. also have awesome classes available. if you’re thinking about joining, DO IT! thanks for being awesome CAC!

Art Hirsch 2 years ago

Positive experience: The CAC has improved since Andrea Trout has taken over as Manager; the pool and hot tubs are well under control and maintenance has improved. Andrea is very approachable, responsive and friendly. Great to see pool parties and food on special occasions. It would be nice to get a senior discount.

Negative experience: Unfortunately, this location does not honor their legally binding, written contracts with clients regarding their two free personal training sessions. I would choose another location.

Fantastic experience: Excellent outdoor hot tub and swimming pool!

Negative experience: The responses from the management about filling out paperwork to change who is the primary owner of the account is enough to make me never sign up here. Wow what a response hahaha. You SHOULD be able to do this in person, on the phone, or online, without ever having to put a pen to paper. What are y'all thinking?

Fantastic experience: Joined almost 8yrs ago. Left during the Covid crisis.....No other gym like this in Boulder. Friendly Staff, they will get anything done for you that you need or request. We joined back a yr ago.....Great gym, up to date equipment, indoor/outdoor pool-Run don't walk there!!!! Highly recommend!!! In addition to the athlete's who go here.....There will never be a gym that makes them satisfied- If they followed the rules, payed on time, and could deal with the repairs(as everyone does in their home, office, or anywhere for that matter, they are doing a great job!

Negative experience: I was really hoping they will be different than all the one star reviews they have. I was wrong. Save yourself from getting ripped off by this business. My husband and I had the joint membership for months. I wanted to cancel my membership while keeping his. I did everything right, told them ahead of time, filled paperwork like everything. A few months later they were still charging for two. For months they came up with an excuse after the other not to give us our money back.. We lost hundreds of dollars. With their shady business scheme they lost us and anyone we know as customers. Stay away from this scam!

Tony Martinez 2 years ago

Negative experience: This place will do anything in their power to steal your money. They make "mistakes" when charging, do not fix them, and then they overcharge you. Do NOT give your credit card to this business, it was my mistake, and you will regret it sooner or later. I was overcharged hundreds of dollars because of their mistakes, and they would not refund. Stay away from this scam. The gym is ok at best, and definitely not worth the price.

Negative experience: Buyer beware, be vey aware. Not an ethical or well run business. There are several superior options with better service and better facilities. Shop around, you will be happy you did.

Salomeh D 3 years ago

Negative experience: Incredibly disinterested and detached from customer service. Advise of membership staff and recruiters is different to what the accounting considers deadline of the cancellation. They'll keep your money. Their gym is empty on most days. I'd like to know how this corporation thinks they can hang around given the level of dishonesty, lack of ownership and disinterest they are demonstrating from assistant manager level to their accounting team. Please stay away from them unless their leadership gets their act together.

John D 3 years ago

Negative experience: Be wary of these guys. I have been a member since its inception and have since passed into the senior bracket. Did I ever get a break for my loyalty? No. Instead fees climb every year but nothing improves. I learned through the grapevine that initiation fees were being offered at hugely discounted rates and monthly membership at half what I am paying. Then to cancel, one has to go through the corporate office and they demand 1 month's notice. Not 30 days but a full calendar month. So if you terminate on the 3rd day of the month, you will pay fees until the end of the following month.

Caitlin Bowerman 3 years ago

Negative experience: This gym continues to go downhill. I'm a member still because of the pool but they are making it as difficult as possible. Some recent items: 1. They changed masters swim from free to pay for with 0 notice and make it extremely difficult to use the pool outside of normal working hours because of the kids swim program and masters swim 2. They continuously have maintenance issues: The women's locker room ceiling fell in and closed half the locker room 3. They reduced the clubs hours and won't reinstate them post-covid restrictions. When I asked at the front desk if there were any plans to re-look at the hours opened I got a blatant 'no' They will continue to charge more and more money and reduce services.

Fantastic experience: Love this place!!! Do it right, get a personal trainer right when you join. My personal trainer, Tristan is amazing. He's been working with me for 3 weeks now and I've lost 7 lbs! He pushes me and it amazes me to see I'm capable of much more than I ever thought. He's also extremely compassionate. As a beginner, at times I would be down on myself for not being more fit, and Tristan would respond intelligently with nothing but kind and motivating things to say. His interpersonal skills are on point and it makes a huge difference. It makes working out fun. This experience here has been life changing. Thanks CAC and big thanks Tristan! Also the staff are so incredible kind and all welcomed me as a new member. Thanks Matt and Kennedy and everyone else that works here!

Fantastic experience: Rehabbing the running and Conquering my fear of open water in the fantastic outdoor saltwater pool

Naomi Woldemar 3 years ago

Negative experience: Update to the Update: I did ultimately receive a check in the mail which I appreciated. It took upwards of 30 phone calls and e-mails including meticulous documentation on my part and refuting a lot of gaslighting, etc. I would have preferred things handled correctly from the start. I would have continued at the gym. Update 2022: I should have heeded the Google reviews. While I did enjoy the club in the “before times” I’ve come to learn the hard way that the business model at CAC / Wellbridge to be getting credit card numbers and charging for membership without consent. After closing my account during COVID they started billing again 3 months later with no notification. Over one year and many promises later, I have yet to see more than the 3 months of fraud my credit card company was able to refund. I’ve spoken to several other former members who had similar experiences. It seems very short sighted but it may be that unauthorized credit card charges are more the business model than running a proper health club. I was wary based on reviews but my experience has been good. Staff is friendly and equipment is fine. I can almost always get on any machine without waiting and spa facilities are decent. Sanitation could be better and clean-wipes more available and used. Also it's not easy to join certain classes as they are mostly already full. Free coffee before 10am is fantastic & there's a new general manager so hopefully the issues other's noted will be addressed.

Negative experience: I was told today their indoor pool has 20 chlorine and indeed as I swam today the water in the indoor pool was very cloudy and there was the smell of chlorine a little. The website says it's saline - that's not really true.

Fantastic experience: Great facility and staff. Saline pool!

Gagne 3 years ago

Negative experience: Most unbelievable membership policy ever, in order to get a membership here you have to pay for 3 months even if you don’t use the gym, canceled after my first month because it was a mediocre gym for such an insane price, they continued to bill me even after it was canceled and I had stopped using my membership, called the billing agency and the lady was extremely rude and not helpful at all. Disputed with my bank and legal team.

mirilde vilar 4 years ago

Negative experience: Considering to cancel my membership. I’ve try to contact costumer service but never answered. I have been a member for over 3 years, they say they have towel service but at the time you ask for them they are washing. The cleaning in the bathroom is awful I’ve seen the same trash in the shower for a week. The steam room and the mats outside the shower have mold on them. They keep adding people but won’t invest in more towels. It supposed to be a high end athletic club but it’s looking more and more to a planet fitness. They should not call them self an athletic club. Also some of the administrative staff are rude.

Christopher Parenteau 4 years ago

Negative experience: Sad that a pretty decent gym, albeit overpriced, ruins the experience when you try to cancel your membership of over 4 years . . . . while it's frozen during a global pandemic. The staff at the gym is good, but Wellbridge corporate is another story. Never have I been yelled and hung up on by a staff accountant, then told by her manager that I probably deserved it, and then BLOCKED by the company on Instagram for commenting about my experience. I can't recommend anyone join a Wellbridge club after the mistreatment, deception, and cowardice management seems to practice.

CO Food Assistance Expert 4 years ago

Negative experience: They do not clean thoroughly and do not mandate members clean equipment. Once COVID was relaxed, the equipment is smashed in again without enough cleaning stations and NO enforcement of cleaning rules. If there was another choice in town I’d switch immediately. Guess I’ll bring my own spray bottle.

Elizabeth Nelson Woller 4 years ago

Negative experience: Sadly, very Boulder in the worst way. You literally have to be assessed and quality for certain classes, even if you have plenty of experience outside of CAC. Assessment depends on paying for multiple private sessions with THEIR teacher. I was told that I would “hold everyone up” even though I’ve been taking biweekly privates with an outside teacher for almost six months (that’s a direct quote, by the way). I grew up here and hated exercising until I found a place where you don’t have to be rich or athletic to qualify for a workout. Unfortunately Boulder hasn’t changed.

Joe Houlihan 4 years ago

Negative experience: Canceled my membership in writing. Gym instead paused my membership then resumed billing me for several months. Billing department hung up on me. Really disappointing and deceitful practices from a local business I had previously trusted.

Ethan Hirshberg 4 years ago

Negative experience: Yeah these guys are as bad as everyone says. Won't let you cancel. They charged me for 3 months after I cancelled. They wouldn't refund me so I tried to cancel again. Then they sent me invoices for an additional 3 months, which I said I wouldn't be paying so they referred it to a collections agency. The gym is pretty nice but always under construction, but overall the organization is absolute trash

Alan Higgins 4 years ago

Negative experience: This place will lie through their teeth about the membership agreements. They don’t stand by anything they commit too. Their machines were mostly broken when I did go

Ana Paula Bastian 4 years ago

Positive experience: I have a soft spot in my heart for CAC, mainly because I love the group fitness classes and have built a nice little community by attending them regularly. My star rating has to do with the quality of the pool area- the lounge chairs are almost all defective and it's frustrating to not even be able to find a fully functioning lounge chair when you're paying over $100/month to be able to use all of the club's amenities. If they make a little effort in making the pool area nicer and more pleasant, it would be a major plus for members and potential members, and I'm sure a little improvement would go a long way. Update: hats off to CAC for navigating the pandemic like pros! All amenities are still open for members and I always feel safe exercising indoors.

kevin mcbeth 4 years ago

Negative experience: Cancelled a membership very explicitly but the business chose to continue billing my wife who was unavailable to cancel her account.

Marisa Greenwood 5 years ago

Negative experience: Beware of lots of fine print, hidden fees, spending lots of time and money trying to get your money back, rudeness at Wellbridge corporate and a whole lot of headache. When COVID hit in March I went the website to see what they were doing. They had 3 options, one of which was cancel. So I wrote them in their contact form on their site (so now I have NO copy!) stating I wanted to cancel. They now say that never happened and I have spent weeks trying to get my money back for 3 months worth of membership. No one will call me, it’s only email and it takes days to get a response. The last email I got had ZERO problem solving or resolution advice. It was insulting and down right rude. I am still trying to get my money back and “cancel” my membership to this date. Stay tuned. Perhaps I can change my one star (which should be zero) to something better if someone at the club or corporate would actually show some human compassion during a pandemic. I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviews I have read about this money hungry gym. Don’t give this gym one cent of your hard earned money.

Fantastic experience: Just joined. Awesome facility

Laura Bohn 5 years ago

Negative experience: I rejoined CAC end of Dec 2019. I signed up with a personal trainer, who missed 2 appointments and then left the club, it took the PT Manager 3 weeks to contact me. When COVID hit, all memberships were placed on hold. In June, CAC sent an email telling clients to 'click here' if you wanted to change your membership. My membership was on hold, so I had no reason to move it from 'hold' considering I am immune compromised and had no intention to begin working out at a gym again. Then they proceeded to bill people who did nothing. Even with Medical Provider's note that I am immune compromised, CAC is trying to collect 2 months of membership from me. While I hope gyms can survive this pandemic - what CAC / Wellbridge is doing is criminal. I can no longer recommend this gym to anyone for any reason.

Aliya Cowie 5 years ago

Negative experience: Careful of signing up here. I thought I was signing up for a month to month contract that was presented as “cancel anytime” but this has been a nightmare. I’ve paid these people hundreds and hundreds of dollars for cancelation fees, last month fees, termination fees, and even hold fees because I couldn’t afford to cancel it due to the outrageous hidden fees. I thought it was cancelled and then I got a call saying I owed $400. I went to this gym maybe 5 times!!! They will take you for all you’re worth.

Amy Gillespie 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: We moved from out of town and have a little one and this place had been a saving grace. We love the facilities, the child care, the classes, and especially the outdoor pool in the summer. It has allowed our family to find balance! It’s wonderful to pick up our daughter from school - have her play with her friends in their child care facility(she asks for it!) and get a workout in before heading home for dinner. And I didn’t even mention their parents nights out-which allow my husband and I to get a date night in at a great discount! We have loved our experience.

Michele M. 5 years ago

Negative experience: I will start by sharing that I have over twenty years in the fitness industry, much of it in a sales and marketing management capacity, so I am familiar with the sales process in these clubs. Unfortunately, Colorado Athletic Club is using unethical 80s era low-end club sales tactics, with the bait and switch and price differences based on who you talk to. You may end up paying double what someone else has and not even know it. Management should be more on top of these things, maintaining a seamless member experience and an ethical approach to memberships is a minimum expectation for a club such as this.

Richard Harris 5 years ago

Negative experience: They are not an honorable company. Beware, there is scummy fine print in your contract. They make quitting an expensive pain in the butt.

Sue 5 years ago

Negative experience: I was a member for 5 years. I've never belonged to a gym where 'management' and the financial department have been so complacent. When I was over-billed for 3 months in a row, the financial department was INCREDIBLY rude to me, and even hung up the phone on me. Impressive customer service. This behavior, in combination with the poorly maintained equipment, and lack-luster class schedule is what led me to move on. I wish they actually had some competition in town since they are essentially a default gym for many members that need the pool/child care/gym combo.

Negative experience: The windows were very dirty.

Luke Zacharias 5 years ago

Positive experience: The equipment is good but the men’s locker room is disgusting, especially the sink area.

Hannah Deminski 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: I just joined a month and a half ago and I’ve had a great experience. The staff and coaches have been friendly and welcoming. It’s busy at all times of day but equipment and machines are always available. I have loved the cycling and yoga classes. They also give two complimentary personal training sessions when you sign up and I used mine for swim lessons with Kimberly Goodell. She was amazing, knowledgeable, easy to schedule with and I’m purchasing more lessons with her to work up to the masters swim classes. Overall I have enjoyed my experience and I think I pay a reasonable amount considering I was paying $170 a month at Orange Theory Fitness. The locker rooms are always busy, but they’re well stocked with necessities and very clean.

Fantastic experience: Very nice facility. Friendly staff.

Conrad Corbella Bagot 5 years ago

Negative experience: One of their members lost a bag and sandles. I found it, so I decided to call them. They refused to do anything about it. It seems they really don't care at all about their members. Update: Called them as their answer suggested. The so-called "general manager" was rude and claimed the bag had been properly handled and was in their "lost and found". She clearly didn't know what she was talking about. To whoever lost the bag, you can find it @ the Boulder Police Department.

Nell Gable 6 years ago

Negative experience: I usually join during the summer for the pool, but with the declining quality of the equipment, classes and facilities (low quality shampoo/soap, showers broken for months, machines out of order etc.), it’s just not worth the price. Read all contracts carefully for tricky language about extra charges. E.g. I put my membership on hold for 3 months then went to cancel and was told I needed to “activate” my membership and pay for a month before I could cancel. I should have just canceled in the first place!

Mario Zulian 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: loved the ambience, the friendly staff and the quality workout equipement

Bart Balis 6 years ago

Positive experience: I have been a member since they opened. The staff is friendly and the facilities are clean. My criticism concerns the maintenance of the equipment, especially the cardio and weight machines. It seems that the priority for repairs is way too low with some repairs taking months if at all. The business model emphasizes sales not customer service. I wish it was otherwise since I am otherwise satisfied.

Nicholas Antonellis 6 years ago

Negative experience: Beautiful club but some of the employees are not kind.

Nisha Desai 6 years ago

Negative experience: Extremely poor customer service. And some instructors and customer service people have also made racist comments. Unfortunately I like and only go there for the swimming pool and use the gym and do my best to stay away from them as much as possible.

Laurie Branch 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: I am changing my original 1 star rating to 5. The management has now addressed the issue of heating the hot yoga room and providing great options for group fitness, yoga, pilates, and dance. My favorite class is La Blast which is taught by the enthusiastic, well-loved Lexi! If you can't find a class that fits into your schedule, you are clearly not trying! I am a member due to the many offerings it has.

Nina Nguyen 6 years ago

Negative experience: I am a member from years ago and decided to visit and sign back up again to take some Pilates classes. Last Saturday I got to the club a little after 9 am to get sign back on and planned to attend the 10 am Pilates Class. We did not finish my registration by 10 am so I asked if I could take the 10 am Pilates and come back to finish up everything. The office staff told me it was fine to take the class and come back to finish up everything. I was at the Pilates studio 5 minutes before 10 am and the Pilates instructor, Jodi showed up 5 minutes after 10 to teach her 10am class. Jodi asked if I registered for the class so I explained to her I was in the middle of re-enrolling and buying the Group fitness package for my Pilates class but didn't want to be late. Jodi asked me leave the class to finish up purchasing for my Group Class package first. I explained to Jodi I was a member, re-enrolling and the club is having a promotion of $200 club credit which I am putting toward my Pilates sessions. None of that seems to matter and Jodi insisted that I leave the class. Even though, her class was not full and only has two other members at the time. She did not have the courtesy to let me finish up her class and walk me to the front desk to make sure I would be paying for her service. It really infuriating that I was treated so poorly. It's just a fitness class, did not need to embarrass a customer like I would not be paying for my service. I would never take Jodi's class again and management needs to know that no one deserves to be treated that way in their facility. And tell your instructor to be on time for their class.

Valerie Stillman 6 years ago

Negative experience: I have been a member at CAC for 4 years and specifically chose to pay the higher month-to-month rate because I could never fully commit to a year membership. Upon realizing that I now need to cancel my membership I am told that they will still collect next month's dues!?! What was the point of paying month-to-month if I can't cancel "at any time"?!?!? What a joke. And a rip off. Spend your money elsewhere. Seriously. Very disappointing.

Katie K 6 years ago

Negative experience: Absolutely terrible, don’t waste your money. They don’t care about you or your experience. It is run down and crowded. They will also jerk you around when you quit the club and Make you regret ever giving them $1.

Trevor Tucker 6 years ago

Negative experience: I simply can’t workout here. I can’t stand how people walk around barefoot and in swimsuits in the workout area. I understand there is a pool and there are competitive swimmers, but seriously, I don’t want to see your nasty bare feet when I’m trying to workout. And guys, in the lockerroom, would it really kill you to cover-up with a towel? I’ve never belonged to a gym where people literally use the restroom completely buck naked. So weird. Learn some courtesy people!

Negative experience: Rates raised every year we were members. Pool heater was out every August and it took about a month to get it fixed EVERY year. Every time we took my daughter to the CAC for her swim lessons through the CAC, the hospitality manager tried to charge her for a full membership...she is seven years old and we paid for her swim lessons through CAC ahead of time and there was no rule that she had to be a member to take lessons. This little discussion with the hosp manager occurred every Saturday for about a year or two and took about 10 minutes...it was annoying to say the least and a HUGE turn off. Personal training team was warm and friendly though (A+ service and care for them)!

Jimmy Martin 6 years ago

Negative experience: It’s ok. Lots of towels for free. Can be very crowded many parts of the day. Classes cost extra. The mens locker room is usually very crowded and littered with used towels, apparently the clients are used to servants. Weights and machines are very nice. I decided to quit as it’s too expensive.

Becca Raccone 6 years ago

Negative experience: Joined, eventually cancelled, and after their "cancellation" period was over they continued for months trying to get more money from me. Even threatened to send me to collections. In the end, had to file a BBB complaint to get them to stop. Horrible service from a decaying gym. Avoid. Join instead, either the Boulder or Longmont Rec center. The one in Longmont is really nice and a 1/3rd of the cost.

Negative experience: The building has gone downhill in recent years. Leaks have not been addressed adequately or timely, nor does this gym show they care about reinvestment. Additionally, I submitted the membership cancellation form 4 months ago but I continue to get charged.

Negative experience: This place will STEAL your money after bringing on four additional customers and being a member there, they kept making mistakes in regards to my account charging me unnecessary late fees and falsely advertised rates, they do have an incredible staff, especially there trainers very helpful and nice people, but they neglect keeping there equipment working properly and constantly sneak in extra charges where they can.

Tom Abramoff 6 years ago

Negative experience: I only go here because it's the closest to my home, but it's old, dirty, and too expensive. If you have another option I'd recommend exploring that.

Kathy Haven 6 years ago

Negative experience: What a rip-off, and horrible customer service. First of all, at the monthly rate they charge - its obnoxious to charge add'l for certain classes (pilates, ski conditioning, etc). Secondly, HORRENDOUS way to treat people. I placed my membership on hold this summer. Then when my PT told me my rehab would be much longer than I originally expected, I terminated my membership. Now they are trying to backcharge me a month in membership fees. I'm now using the Peloton App to workout for less than $20 a month - I Highly recommend this!!!!!!!!!

Donald McCleary 7 years ago

Negative experience: I have been going to CAC Boulder for over 5 years and have used other CAC facilities for over 10. It was great when I started, but has slowly been going downhill. There are way to many "out of order" signs at the facility that seem to be there for months. Hopefully they will be able to get some investment and bring the place up, but I had to cancel my membership today after getting tired of seeing the state of disrepair the facility is in that is only progressively getting worse - although they did have new shower curtains today.

Lisa Blanchard 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: Besides the mountains, this club is the main reason I love living here. The views of the Flat Irons on my drive in to the club never fail to put me in a good mood but this club makes me swoon. It's posh and swanky... my kind of place. It's not the cheapest but I don't care. You get what you pay for. I take swim fitness classes here and I love them. The locker room (women's) is always clean and has fresh flowers! I don't even mind showering here.....once I got used to the fact that everyone struts around naked. It took me aback at first, I'll admit, but now I don't even mind when I'm sitting in the hot tub having a conversation with someone buck naked. I, of course, still wear a suit but no one judges me for that either. :) I take classes at both the inside and outside pool and I enjoy both. The pools are well maintained. And parking for this club is a breeze with many spots in the parking garages on both sides. And for Boulder, that's quite a coup. There are a ton of different kinds of classes, most of which are free with membership. There are a couple of things that have an additional cost but not too many. Could the people working there be a bit more friendly? Yep. But to be honest, I don't deal with them all that much. They swipe my card and that's it. It's Boulder after all; not always the friendliest town. I do think they could be a little speedier to get things fixed when they break down but maybe that's out of their control. I don't know. My one and only real complaint is how heavy handed they are with trying to sell their personal training services. I was offered two free sessions when I first joined but then after my first session, I purchased the full package of 25 sessions (to the tune of $1200!). I assumed that I would have 26 sessions since I didn't do my other free one but nope. At the end of the 25 sessions, my trainer, all of sudden, just couldn't find a spot for me in his schedule anymore. Ugh, I hate when you are promised something but then it just becomes a hassle to get it. Anyway, all that said, the trainer did help me lose some weight. He made me pay him extra (!!!) for an eating plan, but I use it to this day. He didn't really take into account what I LIKE to do for fitness so his weight training has gone by the wayside....mainly because I just don't like lifting weights. All in all, though, personal training aside, it's a great club and I'm happy to be a member.

Negative experience: 30 dollars for a day quest pass?? My gym membership back home is 36 dollars a month!! This is beyond crazy. There are so many work out classes offered here for under 15 dollars... there is no reason it should be 30 dollars to go work out for 1 hour.

Negative experience: I used to like this club a lot, but the facility is rapidly aging due to poor design decisions and a lack of reinvestment. For example, the lockers are starting to fall apart, the wet area tiles are slippery 24x24s instead of having enough grout lines for your feet to grip, etc. The basic problem is not the local staff--Jill and her team are great--but it is an indifferent corporate parent that doesn't reinvest their profits locally. Edited: I got tired of paying premium prices for less than premium facilities and left it behind. Too many yearly price increases and too few dollars reinvested into the facility. There are better kept clubs in Boulder.

Negative experience: My daughter joined this club. Apparently the amenities are nice. It seems quite expensive however. My advice would to be wary of the agreement that they expect you to sign. She signed a 12 month agreement. After the 12month period they will continue to charge you for the club unless you submit a form in writing requesting termination. Also they don't notify you at all prior to doing so. If you dispute the additional charges they will turn you over to collections. After 12 months it is quite understandable with all the other bills you have to forget this clause. Quite a scam!

Fantastic experience: I've belonged since '82 (go ahead, do the math:). Yes things have changed. Yes, it is no longer privately owned. The positives are many- the new facilities at Flatirons are fabulous, the instructors mostly have remained . . . there is nothing better in our area.

Negative experience: Staff is good, but it's driven by a corporate entity which is only interested in profits. Your money's better spent at a rec center.

Fantastic experience: There is something for everyone at this gym! I love it!

Kara Jostes 8 years ago

Positive experience: This gym is worth the fees. I decided to sign with CAC because of their policies surrounding their childcare facilities. Before being a member I met with Elle and Mary to discuss their polices regarding saftey and sexual abuse prevention. The polices in place are great and allows me to get in a workout and mommy relaxation time without worry. Thanks for your communication and clean facility CAC, I appreciate you.

Fantastic experience: A year ago, I rated this place 3 stars since things kept breaking and took forever to fix. I came back and love the place. The pool has an open schedule for lap swimmers, it's also saline which doesn't hurt your eyes (neither does the eye candy!) or make your skin rashy like chlorine, the hot yoga is working, and the steam room and sauna make me feel pampered. The place is clean and the staff are friendly. You'll also recognize steady local Boulderites, a comfort in a transient town.

Positive experience: Great facilities, staff and location. If you add to or change your account in anyway the fees are reset to current maximum. So don't count on fees based on duration of membership

Sheila L 8 years ago

Negative experience: Good facility however they always charge your card beyond your contract. BEWARE canceling with them, they will try and CHARGE you again and again. Funny how signing up is such a breeze yet they can never get a cancellation right. This is the 2nd time and based on reviews- this seems to be strategy of theirs. Perhaps a file to the BBB would be in order with them by someone b/c this is really poor business. I know you've got to sometimes do the cancellation forms ahead but even then they still charge your card and you have to jump hoops and make calls to get it cleared with them. It's a really sneaky and lame way of doing business with their customers. They love charging your card and you need to watch them. Other reviews reflect similar feedback so I'm wondering when they will learn, if they care. It's unfortunate that they have the best facility in town and I look forward to a little competition to wake them up a little. **** EDIT**** They charged my card AGAIN...AFTER "resolving" and refunding the other charge that shouldn't have been there. What a crock this place is.

Negative experience: Not very clear on membership fees and agreements. Too many naked people in the hottub. Some guy massaging his thing in the shower. Not a family oriented place.

Louise Shepherd 8 years ago

Negative experience: I've lived in many cities and belonged to several high-end gyms (like Equinox in NYC) and I have to say, this place is THE WORST. The equipment is always broken--is it really that hard to keep treadmills working? They closed the pool for 2 weeks for repairs in SEPTEMBER when tons of us were getting ready for fall triathlons. The shower stalls are slimy and full of hair (ugh!). Why am I still a member? I really like my personal trainer (tho' that doesn't app;y to all of them, there are some really obnoxious "look at me" types there) and the location is so close to work. And I'm afraid they'll screw me if I try to cancel, like they've apparently done with other reviewers here.

Negative experience: The gym is pretty nice while I was going. I cancelled my membership in July 2015 and they continued to bill me for over a year. Now they refuse to refund these unapproved payments which total over $800. I have filed a formal complaint with the BBB of Boulder/Denver. If anyone else has had a similar experience, please contact me, I am willing to go to the media based on all the one-star reviews with similar billing issues.

Negative experience: I have never wrote a bad review before, but my experience at CAC is worthy of one. Horrible customer service, no wonder all the latest reviews are 1 star. Make sure you understand their cancellation policy, all they care about is your $. Make sure you cancel your account in person with the manager present and sign the paperwork. This place is horribly managed. My partner and I gave them verbal cancellation notice and sent them an email when we were going out of town for a few month, which they supposedly "lost". We said we don't need to cancel our membership, just put it on hold. Found out they didn't handle it properly when I got a call from collections 2 month later. Dear CAC management, you could have had 2 long term customers, but you decided to handle it the way you did. I hope that $20 you probably got from collections is worth it for you. Plenty of great gyms and yoga studios in Boulder, CAC is not one of them.

Negative experience: Last summer I visited CAC for the first time and decided to sign a 3 month membership to try it out. The main appeal to me was their chlorine-free pool. I also started enjoying their yoga lessons and other offerings. Unfortunately a month and a half in to my membership, I got really sick and went to the hospital. I was diagnosed with a stomach hernia and my doctor said I had to stop all activities, including swimming and especially any type of exercise at the gym. I informed CAC of this, and they said they could work something out with me to cancel early since it was a medically warranted request. They asked for a letter from my doctor. Since my doctor referred me to a chiropractor for further treatment and manual manipulation of my stomach hernia (in hopes to avoid surgery), I decided to ask my chiropractor for the letter because he could better describe my needs. CAC received the letter and informed me that the letter was "not from a real doctor." They declined to let me cancel early and receive a refund. I emailed the manager Jill Shusterman to voice my concern and speak about it further but she would not return my emails or phone calls. I am extremely disappointed regarding how very little they cared about me given my medical emergency, and how poor their customer service is. Bottom line is they care about the $$$ and not about you as a person.

Negative experience: After I was accepted into medical school in the beginning of January, I asked a front desk representative at the Boulder Colorado Athletic Club to refresh me on the cancellation policy. They said that that all I had to do was "pop in and let them know and that there was a $0 dollar cancellation fee". The CAC representative neglected to mention that I needed to cancel 1 month in advance to avert a 100 dollar charge. During the first week of April, I figured I would let them know of my cancelation 3 weeks in advance as courtesy, only to find out about the 100 dollar fee for the month of May. I was informed by the representative at the front to come back to the club the next day where I could speak with a manager to make my appeal. When I arrived the next day, no one was available, I was told to come back yet another time because the managers were "out of sight". I returned the following day and was able to meet with Chaz (the hospitality manager) who said that "if he could waive the fee he would, but that it would ultimately rest in the hands of Jill" (the general manager). He took my information and was very apologetic and assured me that somebody would be in contact within the day and if not that day, the next day. Additionally, I received a phone call from a lady who was processing my account suspension. I relayed my frustrations to her as well, she too said she would pass my information along to Jill and recommended that I stop by the club. Again I went and again no manager was around...Still no response from Jill... This is extremely frustrating, I've gone to the club per Wellbridge representative instruction about 4 times now to resolve this. Each time in failure. I realize that the one month notification is contractual, however, I consider it non-binding as result of the misinformation relayed to me by the CAC representative. I thought I could trust the word of the CAC front desk representative without having to reference my contract. Apparently that's not the case. I warn you, be very wary of these people. I've internalized many of the faults of this club from the constant black mold scum ring that lines the men's hot tub which only seems to get scrubbed once every couple of months, to the consistent barrage of broken items and lack of towels...THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING BROKEN! Whether it be the hot tub, the pool heater, the sauna, the steam room, the washing machine, it really just depends on the day. My time is valuable and it has not been respected in this process whatsoever, time after time again, I've been given misinformation. From the misinformation surrounding the contract, to the several failed attempts tor resolve the issue at the club in person. I've still not heard from Jill. Though, today I received a phone call from Chris, the membership accounting manager. He informed me that they will not budge on this 100 dollar fee despite the misinformation delegated to me by their employee. I find this completely unacceptable from the "premier athletic club" in Boulder. You'd be better off going to 24/fitness just down the road, or to the Colorado Athletic Club Flatirons which isn't falling apart....I've also never heard from Jill. Very impressive. For 100 dollars/month, I would not recommend it. Their leadership team is incapable of taking accountability for the misinformation delegated by their employees. Furthermore, their leadership team is scattered, unresponsive, and clearly in disarray. Do yourself a favor, don't join CAC Boulder when you could pay half the cost of membership for 24hr/fitness or go somewhere where you will be respected.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member at CAC Boulder for a little over six months now, and I have been very impressed with the experience. I set out to work on strength training and add some muscle mass. After working with a personal trainer and taking some classes, I am very pleased with the results. I find the culture at CAC to be inviting and positive. The staff are friendly and courteous, the instructors are top-notch professionals, and the facilities are always clean and inviting. It's a very family-friendly community, and people in all stages of achieving their fitness goals are always around. CAC is a great place to work out, get healthy, and supplement an active lifestyle!

Negative experience: "TOO LONG; DIDN'T READ" VERSION: CANCELLING YOUR MEMBERSHIP IS A NIGHTMARE. First, their facilities are nice and if you're the kind of person that will pay extra to be catered to and smiled at constantly then this is the place for you. However, I am preparing to take legal action against the company for failing to properly cancel my account and continuing to bill me. I initially joined through a promotion involving a discounted rate provided through an agreement made between the gym and my employer. I was miss-quoted how much membership would be after the promotional period, but it wasn't a significant difference and decided to stay with the gym. However, during the summer of 2015 I used the gym less frequently but stayed on because my fiance wanted to use it. We went in, were quoted a price ~$70 for the both of us, happily signed some paperwork, were told have a nice day, were chased out the door with "oh wait we forgot this paperwork as well", signed it, and left satisfied. Later I was notified that a mistake was made and that the bill for both of us would be around ~$110. I found that ridiculous, called their customer service number, and asked for the originally promised ~$70 rate. They declined, which I then promptly asked to cancel the account. The customer service rep said that was fine, apologized for the inconvenience, and I went on my way satisfied once again. Later in fall, I received a bill, informing me that my membership had not only been renewed for another three month period without my knowledge, but was accruing late fees. The gym's in-person staff couldn't help me in the matter, and the customer service representative informed me that they could not cancel accounts over the phone, in direct contradiction to what they told me. After going back and forth for months now I have encountered everything from short/blunt/apathetic responses to upper management from being out-right avoided and ignored when trying to speak with them about the matter. If you ever plan on cancelling your membership, I would recommend never using this gym.

Negative experience: This place looks great, but is terribly managed. When trying to add me to my fiance's account there, the staff had no clue what they were doing. We were quoted a variety of prices before being told they'd have to call us to clarify later. The actual price wound up being more than double the prices mentioned when I stopped by in person. When my fiance tried to leave the gym a few weeks later, they continually failed to handle his account properly. He canceled the account, but someone there lost paperwork or something, because he continued to be billed. After multiple calls and emails, which they seemed to be dodging, Colorado Athletic Club's only real contact with us has been to threaten sending his account to collections. This is ridiculous. Their lack of ability to manage their own account system is laughable, and they then handled the entire issue horribly. Seriously, this place is terribly run. There are so many better gyms in town that happen to charge less. Go to them instead.

Fantastic experience: What's not to like? It's never so crowded that you are waiting for equipment, like every other gym in Boulder. The trainers are aces. The facilities are always being upgraded. I honestly can't complain one bit, it's the nicest club/gym to which I've been a member. Opens early, even on the weekends! It's the best gym in Boulder by far.

Mike Olson 10 years ago

Fantastic experience: I've been a member for 2 years and have loved everything about the club. It's never too busy, the classes are fantastic, and the locker rooms are clean. No issues with broken equipment. The front desk staff are always polite and accomodating. The trainers are also always walking around and willing to help expand your knowledge of fitness. One trainer even bought me a beer after a workout. I have no complaints.

Negative experience: Love the saline swimming pools but they have a lot of mechanical trouble with them. They are closed far too often

Positive experience: This is a great family gym with good classes and awesome facilities including a salt water pool and saunas. It is however pricey.

Fantastic experience: I love this gym! Not sure what else I could possibly want - great classes (including great yoga classes too), plenty of machines, good "feel" (comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, not like a warehouse), sauna/hot tub/steam room, indoor and outdoor pools, friendly staff...I'm in gym heaven!

Zed Fifth 10 years ago

Fantastic experience: Very Good, Clean and all inclusive. From Wine bar to indoor/outdoor heated swimming pools and hot tubs this place is great.

Darryl Lepik 10 years ago

Positive experience: Been a member since the day the doors opened so I guess I'm as qualified as anyone to review... The Good. Some nice high end club touches in the dressing room. Good up to date classes and equipment. Outdoor pool esp. in the summer is key especially if you have kids... The Not so Good. Gym should be a bit bigger as the floor gets crowded during busy times. The price. Family membership seems to keep going up (though I'm locked in to my original rate). The turnover rate in childcare and at the front desk is incredibly high. Feel like you barely see the same people for more than two or three months at a time. My Take. If I was signing up today at the more expensive rate I might choose a different option. Boulder Rec Center, YMCA, etc. But it depends on what you want. I need treadmills and weights and I can get that almost anywhere. I will say that the childcare has been excellent from Day 1 (named "Blast") and being able to drop your two young daughters off and not worry for two hours is a huge bonus. But my oldest (8 years old) is outgrowing Blast (8 to 9 years of age seems to be roughly the magic #) and come labor day that might be the tipping point in us choosing a different (read: less expensive, option)
