Negative experience: Avoid this gym at all costs – dishonest and predatory business practices Like others have pointed out, the owner’s behavior is unethical and predatory. I was a customer for two years, signing up for multiple 6-month subscriptions. The red flags were there from the beginning — he requires you to handwrite your credit card information on paper during signup (which he clearly prioritizes), and only after that does he email you a contract. That contract contains buried terms that were never disclosed up front. I learned this the hard way after encouraging my wife and roommate to join, thinking I was supporting a local business. In February, I signed my wife up for a one-month membership, making it absolutely clear — in person — that we were moving out of town and it was for February only. They agreed with no mention of anything ongoing. Fast forward to May: the owner calls me with a “courtesy reminder” to renew my own membership. I declined. He charged me anyway. When I called to demand a refund, he agreed to send a check. That prompted me to check our other charges — and I discovered he had continued billing for my wife’s one-month membership through April. After ignoring my emails, I called him. He initially refused to explain anything over the phone, claiming he had mailed an "explanation letter" (with the refund check, of course). When I pushed, his justification was that “a one-month membership is a rolling contract that continues indefinitely unless canceled in writing,” and that only the 6-month plan cancels automatically. None of this was disclosed during signup. It was hidden in the fine print of a contract he emailed only after we signed. This is not a misunderstanding — it is a pattern of deceptive, exploitative behavior. Overpriced, underwhelming, and run by someone who cannot be trusted.

Negative experience: Crooks tried to charge me double. Liars and thieves

Iron Works Fitness

I searched our CRM system and am not sure who "Stick" is but in our 20 years of being in business, IWF has never charged any member double.

Negative experience: We’ve been a member of iron Works for more than a year. The owner is a complete jerk. He was rude on multiple occasions, passive aggressive and otherwise made us feel unwelcome. It sucked. UPDATE: His response is misleading. We brought our teenagers with us ONCE, not twice, and had no idea it was a violation, given that they were supervised. Without warning, he cancelled our membership forever and took the hundreds of dollars we invested in passes. He didn't let us know it was a problem. He didn't discuss it with us. He just sent us an aggressive, mean-spirited email accusing us and taking our passes.

Iron Works Fitness

Sorry for your experience however, as we warned you and your wife, you may not bring in your underage children to our unattended facility to exercise, of which you did twice. We had no choice but to cancel your memberships.

Negative experience: 15 dollars for one use, I went back in afternoon to work out some lactic acid and was told I could not and in a very condescending manner, mostly elderly not a gym for real weightlifters would not recommend

Iron Works Fitness

That’s correct. The single usage pass does not include multiple usages, per the signed agreement.

Iron Works Fitness

Sorry that your expectations for an “individual member” included your son and his friends. Also very sad that we had to send your account to collections for defaulting on the membership agreement.

Fantastic experience: Great neighborhood gym! Scott, the owner, is very welcoming and greets me by name. The gym is well-maintained, with clean equipment and weights consistently placed in their designated spots. One of the best parts is it is rarely crowded regardless of the time of day. Highly recommended!

Fantastic experience: So far i am really liking this place, no complaints so far except would love either a sauna (preferred) or a hot tub, any place to soak sore muscles if you believe in doing such. It’s a little pricy but you can’t beat the location from my house and also 24 hours! I plan to keep going. The wonder is very on top of communication and is upfront. Unfortunately i have a trip coming up to visit my ill grandma and unless it is my health involved i can’t pause my membership, i asked… this is likely my only complaint. The equipment is clean and up to date. Would recommend!

Iron Works Fitness

Sorry. There is no physical space for a sauna or hot tub.

Fantastic experience: GREAT GYM! Seriously I love this place. Clean. Nice machines. Owners that actually show up and have owned it 17 years and know their clients. And, right next to a bakery and a pizza joint! The shear joy of getting in an early summer morning workout and then grabbing a latte on the patio of the bakery is everything I love about Boulder. That and did I mention how clean this gym is? Seriously, if you're looking for a nice place to workout with nice people and no BS...you found it.

Fantastic experience: Great gym! For early morning gym goers, expect to have the gym to yourself. This is also one of the only gyms in Boulder that is actually open 24 hours, 7 days a week. There’s a decent array of gym equipment, cardio machines, and free weights. Although the space is a little small, it’s organized very efficiently, and space is rarely an issue given the low concentration of patrons in the morning or early afternoon. Highly recommend.

Negative experience: If you're looking for an exclusive gym that discriminates people with health issues from attending or becoming members; this is it. I followed all state & health mandates in accordance to the law and was treated so poorly. To have members police you, glare at you and judge you and to have a gym owner that supports those attitudes is atrocious. I work out so that I may live a healthier life than my genetics allow. It's also crucial for my mental health. There is no excuse for bullying at the gym, let alone at 5 in the morning. If you value inclusiveness, kindness, and logical reason; this is not the gym for you. No refund was provided to me whatsoever for the inexcusable behavior. It's also only as clean as the members keep it, which is not consistent. I will never go back.

Unfortunately for her, Boulder County had a mask requirement during COVID and she thought she was exempt for personal reasons. We could not risk being closed and therefore enforced the Boulder County regulation.

Negative experience: Horrible gym. Horrible service. Accused me about lying about giving my notice to cancel my membership. Also chased me down several times in the locker room demanding to know my name because they didn't believe I could afford a membership. Horrible gym. Horrible people.

Veronica Sullivan 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: I attended this gym for roughly a year, and I have to say it’s been my absolute favorite. It’s locally owned, and you’ll often see Scott around. There’s a lot more care shown (in comparison to large chain gyms) in equipment quality, cleanliness, and overall aesthetic. It’s a 24hour gym, which comes in handy for people like me with complicated schedules. The members that have been attending this gym for a long time are friendly, and I’ve been able to enter alone at any time day or night and still feel safe(they also have cameras and everything you need in case of emergency). This gym has been a Boulder gem.

Positive experience: I really like this gym! They have a great assortment of equipment that is clean, the staff is respectful and the different workout areas are well laid out. My only complaint is that they don't have a seated calf raise machine. It would be awesome if you guys got one!

Positive experience: This is a great gym, my only complaint is that the weightlifting room is crowded and its hard to maneuver or set up for certain lifting styles if there are more than 2 people in there. BUT they never had an issue with my migrating weights/bars to another room where there was more room, which I appreciated greatly! Great cardio room, plyometrics area, and variety of free-weights and machines to get in a well-rounded work-out. The gym is very clean and accessible at all hours. All in all I enjoyed my time here and only left because I moved out of state.

Negative experience: For a few months it was alright. It was mostly clean. The equipment moderately good condition, lacking in some regards, but in keeping with membership pricing. I, as a woman, found it sometimes unnerving to be the only person in the space, with my headphones on, with often only 1 or 2 male clients there, with no actual contact person on site. One trainer in particular liked to "mansplain" things to me. I have been a fitness instructor, and worked as a massage therapist in quite a few fitness centers in my 20 year career. The assumptions that I needed things explained without my asking felt awful and condescending. I have also been a client/member at numerous gyms the past 20+ years. Of any gym I have belonged to, this was by far the most impersonal, and poorly run from an administration standpoint. Communication with the owners often went ignored. I was billed twice one month for no reason and no communication back about it when I inquired. I wrote to let them know my bank had replaced the card I had on file and asked how to submit a new one. No reply. But the owner made a point to chase me down mid workout a week later telling me my card had expired. When I wrote asking what was involved in changing to a 1 month contract, I got zero explanation but my billing automatically changed by the owner with a short email telling me he went ahead and did it, with a clause copied and pasted at the bottom of the email (that to my fault I did not see/read when I got his response) with a cancellation clause that is specified nowhere in the written contract I had. When My worked changed, 10 months into my membership and I asked to cancel, assuming I would be charged a cancellation fee, they told me I could not cancel and would be billed the remainder of the 12 months. So BEWARE. If you get a 12 month membership, and have an emergency, have to move etc, unlike most gyms, they do NOT give you a cancellation fee to break the contract. They will charge you the whole year. Even if you are a month in and have an unexpected life change. And had that been disclosed clearly PRIOR to them signing me up for the 12 month plan, I would have never switched. They do NOT make this clear in their contract, which simply lumps month to month/6 month/12 month plans into one sentence only saying they are "billed consecutively." Nothing about cancellation policy changes going from month to month to a loner contract. When I requested a copy of my contract again, as I was traveling and away from the copy I had at home, the original contact that was month to month now had 12 month membership circled. Which I never modified in person. I brought this to their attention and was told "it was a mistake." I asked if I needed to return my swipe card. No response. But they did make sure to email me telling me I could renew my membership as it comes to a close. Oh and the "fitness assessment" they offer in their marketing, is really the other owners nutrition based package she is trying to sell at a not inexpensive price. It's not a real fitness assessment like you would get at any other gym. I got emails about that more than once, even though I was not interested, but they dropped the ball and with nearly every other important communication piece. It was overall a bad experience and I would NEVER recommend joining. I had referred many clients to their gym and to a few of their trainers. I will tell clients to go to Functional Fitness or many other Boulder gyms that I have had great experiences with over the years. The appeal of a 24 hour, low key, passcard operation seems nice at first, but pay more for a facility that actually has staff on hand full time to communicate with in person and to check in with when questions or safety concerns arise. The owners aren't there enough to actually come through on the small size "community" vibe they sell people on. I really liked the cleaning staff. That's the best thing I can say about this whole place.

Fantastic experience: If you are looking for a no hassle gym that you can just slip into and do your thing then take off. Then you have just found it. It's super simple to sign up, you can give them a call or an e-mail and they respond within the same day every time we did. We came in, got set up with a plan, and were working out in minutes. The real pleasure though is that it's literally just as easy to cancel. I am heading to another state for a job. I gave a voicemail saying I needed to cancel, and that very same day I got a response in my e-mail saying it's been cancelled and I'm good to go. I didn't even need to return the FOB's they provided. (I will though anyway :) ) The gym itself has a great range of equipment from machines to free weights. It also has a fantastic open room with a lot of interesting objects, blocks, balls, bands, etc to work out with as well. I worked out usually around 10AM and 10PM. I never had a problem finding equipment to use and never had to wait. At 10PM though it was dead quiet. Which is great. The owners are ultra responsive, if a piece of equipment failed or something wasn't right they are on it usually in that day. There is also a bowl of tootsie roll pops... who doesn't love those? I will miss this place greatly.
