Our comment from FitFit United States about Movement Boulder:
Movement Boulder is a premier climbing gym located in Boulder, United States, offering an array of climbing routes and facilities for all skill levels. The community here is phenomenal, providing a warm and welcoming environment for climbers of all backgrounds. Visitors appreciate the clean and well-maintained facilities, along with the friendly and helpful staff.
Highlights:
- Fantastic community atmosphere.
- Excellent rope climbing and top rope routes.
- Variety of training equipment and boards available.
- Creative and engaging route setting with options for various skill levels.
While there are many positive aspects, some users have experienced issues mainly concerning the bouldering area, which is often noted to be small and overcrowded. Additionally, parking can be a significant challenge, particularly during busy times, with suggestions for management to improve this aspect. Some climbers have also reported that the grading of the bouldering routes can be inconsistent, and there are concerns about the culture being unfriendly at times, especially for newcomers.
Despite these challenges, the overall experience at Movement Boulder is enjoyable, and many climbers return for the strong sense of community and the high-quality facilities offered. The gym thrives on fostering a positive environment, making it a recommended destination for both novice and experienced climbers alike.
Movement Boulder: Opinions
Negative experience: The community is phenomenal. The facility itself is clean and packed with amenities. However, a climbing gym must excel in its most fundamental offering: the climbing routes. In this critical area, Movement Boulder falls incredibly short. * Lack of Grade Variety: The route distribution is poor, especially for those new to the sport. The setting crew seems to have a disdain for beginner and intermediate climbers, exemplified by the latest cave set, which starts at a V4. Furthermore, routes in the V0-V3 range are consistently more challenging than advertised. * Repetitive Style: There is little variety in the style of movement and technique required. The routes are often monotonous and uninspired, seemingly always requiring a specific heel hook or a move that feels inaccessible unless you are an elite climber or over six feet tall. * Inconsistent Grading: While every gym has some variability, Movement Boulder lacks consistency within its own walls. The grading changes so much between different sets that tracking personal progress is nearly impossible, which removes the sense of satisfaction that comes with progression. * Unsafe Setting: The route setting can be questionable and, at times, dangerous. There is a concerning tendency to set dynamic moves that direct a potential fall toward unpadded concrete sections, force movements with a high risk of tendon injury, and incorporate hazardous top-out sequences. Observing the gym's most dedicated climbers frequently bypass the new routes in favor of the training boards and weight room only serves to validate these criticisms. As a climber who performs in the V10 range and has been a member here for over two years, I believe the gym's only strengths are its community, facility, and lifting area. Beyond that, it fails in its primary function as a climbing gym and is certainly not a place I would recommend for new climbers.
Fantastic experience: There’s so much I love about this gym. Like most of the other Movement locations, the setting is absolutely fantastic. The thing that sets this location apart from the other Movements is the people. Everyone here is typically very respectful, and it’s much less of a “show” here vs. Movement Baker. The lead wall is excellent. This is one of my favorite gyms in the US.
Positive experience: Fun routes, great facility, views, friendly staff, green energy. Boom! But they're not very customer-centric: you can't pause or cancel your membership unless you go in in person, and you can't do it during the last 5 days of the month for the next month. Greedy! Also really wish they stayed open past 6 pm on Sundays.
Negative experience: Updated May 2025: tried more of the rope routes. I'm 5'4" with a negative ape and most routes in the 5.10s were reachy, inconsistent and bouldery. Movement Golden and BRC do not have this problem. The setting is the worst in Boulder if you are short. Setting really needs to improve. Maybe the setters from Golden can help? Recommend going elsewhere until then. Staff is nice. 2024: Decided to try this Movement instead of Golden. Was disappointed with bouldering route setting - very inconsistent grading and 50% of the routes were reachy. Bouldering area is also too tiny. Rope setting was great though! Agree with others that culture was kinda unfriendly. No one was talking, most people had headphones in, and the few conversations I tried to start while bouldering were ignored or brushed off.
Fantastic experience: It's a great facility. I really appreciate the boards, the open feeling of the space, and the gym. The rope climbing looked good, though I did not partake today. I have heard and experienced that the bouldering is subpar. Especially compared to BRC
Negative experience: Their membership cancellation policy and steps are a joke.
Fantastic experience: Good gym with solid offerings
Negative experience: Overcrowded, parking is generally terrible and they shut down the entire gym, even the weight room, during competitions. There are better options in Boulder
Negative experience: The honesty and integrity of members at Movement are beyond disappointing. Just yesterday, someone hit my car, leaving deep scratches (4x6 inches) through all paint layers. A week ago, a friend forgot his brand-new Petzl Neox belay device, which was never returned—just stolen. About a year ago, someone banged a dent into my car door. In all three cases, Movement's response simply is "good luck" and year after year they refuse to install cameras. Parking is already a nightmare, but the lack of responsibility and inability to improve make it even worse. Given how often these incidents happen and the fact that most other Movement gyms have cameras, I can't understand why this location is being so cheap. The route setting and climbing are average for a gym, but the bad parking situation and low-integrity culture of too many members make for an overall dissatisfying experience.
Negative experience: The gym is great. The parking is a joke. There are only about 50 available parking spots for a gym that holds hundreds. Makes no sense whatsoever and is a very common problem among members. Be warned.
Negative experience: This would be a 5 star gym if they just charged for parking so it would be possible to park. That's really the only thing missing.
Negative experience: Compared to other movement gyms this location is dirty with older unclean restrooms and equipment. Lots of worn down finishes and carpets. Gym is also closed for last minute private employee events on a regular basis.
Negative experience: How does this happen in Boulder? A town that has so much pride, but they accept corporate America like no other. Another rebranded corporation to appear as a local gym. Overpriced and taking advantage of climbers. Corporate takeover is ruining America. Go to a different gym that is actually local, stop sending your money out of state…
Positive experience: The good: the routes were good. I like that they don't require people to own their own belay devices. I did enjoy climbing. Lots of space and many options based on skill level. The bad: If the intake form is going to ask for pronouns, staff need to use them at least when giving the belay tests. Asking for pronouns and then not using them is very performative. Also, staff need to be trained to at least use gender neutral language when approaching people on the gym floor. Using he/him pronouns for someone who is wearing a sports bra as a top is ridiculous. There is a sign up on the bulletin board saying that The Movement supports LGBTQ+ people. Putting up a sign saying you support trans people, means you should actually try to support them.
Fantastic experience: Jordan and Tim are awesome! It was my second time climbing and I tore my hands up but they helped me figure out how to treat em and climb on Thank youu
Negative experience: “Movement boulder. It would be easier for us if our customer just paid us and did show up at all. Because we hate them and never listen to anything they say” P.S. this gym get worse everyday.
Negative experience: I belonged to this gym for years. Before it was bought out it had a nice amicable culture. Unfortunately, afterward everything changed. The rules and regulations because onerous and the price of membership continued to rise quickly. I had an incident where I broke my wrist and could not climb for months. I tried to put my membership on hold, but movement refused to put it on hold saying that I didn’t do it fast enough. I tried to put it on hold five days before the end of the month, plenty of time for them to process the hold. I had to argue with the staff for an hour before they finally agreed to cancel my membership. I am so disappointed by this organization and its treatment of the community that it serves.
Fantastic experience: Not as large as other gyms, but very focused. Great for getting stronger.
Negative experience: The upstairs area turns into a sauna by 10 AM. Unreasonably hot in the spring/summer. A few fans up there doesn’t cut it. Better off training outdoors…
Negative experience: Stupid expensive. $28 for a day pass.
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym in boulder, but it's pricey
Negative experience: too crowded and expensive
Negative experience: Couldn't even find parking to get in to climb. So still haven't been but not a good experience to literally be unable to park even on side streets. Wild
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Kind and helpful staff.
Negative experience: They actually pay a service to come through and kick out vans. I parked late at night planning to go in at opening the next day. Someone came through at 2:15A. Funny thing is she didn’t say anything to the other two vans parked in the lot, or the car that seemed to be trying to hide behind one of the vans. Lame, and anti-cool. It would make more sense if I, or the van people, were there all the time and constantly taking up spots from their customers… oh, and if we weren’t also customers. Hopefully the boulders are at least good! Update: The boulders were good. Nice setting- though pretty soft. (To be expected for the area.) Unfortunately not a whole lot of space for the boulders. This might be the only climbing gym I’ve been too with more fitness area space than bouldering. When you talk with the locals though they all say the same thing. “Movement knows this gym is too small- but they won’t do anything other than tell us to drive to Denver!” 1 star simply for existing, another star for the routesetters.
Positive experience: This gym bums me out The bouldering section is way small. The ropes side looks nice, but it’s been tougher than usual to find ropes partners in Boulder. A notecard board like they have at Engelwood’s Movement would be helpful
Negative experience: Friendly staff and probably some of the best setting in the front range, but the bouldering area at this facility is criminally small. Doesn't help that this is probably the most popular gym in Boulder making parking damn near impossible. For the amount they are charging and the members they serve, the facility should be at least twice the size and have more parking (or ffs at least pay the neighboring businesses to let us use their parking when they're closed). If you're an intermediate boulderer like myself that has a hard time asserting their time on the wall, probably look elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: Great experience! Good gear, nice climbing environment with lots of different routes for all skill levels. Nice staff as well as fellow climbers.
Negative experience: Signed up for a class and when I arrived there was no parking. So little parking there were three cars waiting for a spot. Maybe I'll try another day?
Fantastic experience: Great gym! Especially love the daycare option
Positive experience: Big, shiny and underwhelming. Movement gyms are generally ok to climb at. I am really low on the Boulder gym though. The route setting lacks flow and character. Feels bouldery, strength based for all the routes I try to climb. Also doesn't have consistent grade ratings. Point is, I haven't enjoyed climbing here. I won't realistically be back otherwise. Also horrendously pretentious and unfriendly patrons. As an example. I tied in and started leading this one route. I finished and got down and these two dudes were unhappy that I lead it because they wanted to lead it before me somehow. I don't understand.
Fantastic experience: Very nice gym, feels clean and well maintained. Didn't get a chance to rope climb but there are a lot of routes.
Negative experience: Would not recommend going when it's busy. Parking is a nightmare and it took me over 30 minutes to get a spot.
Fantastic experience: I love this gym :) the staff are all friendly and great. Its a great place to climb and train. It does get crowded though in the winter months and parking can be a pain in the butt.
Positive experience: I bought the BOGO 4-punch pass at Christmas time not realizing they expired at the end of the year. (?!? Use 8 punches in less than 6 weeks!?! ...it didn't say that on the ad.) Anyway, when we came to use the last 4 passes in February, they had already expired. Izzy, the manager, was kind enough to honor them and give us the 4 passes back. I appreciated the good customer service. They do good route setting, and it's always fun to see some of Colorado's finest crushers training there. You never know when Lynn Hill, Tommy Caldwell, or Robin Erbsfeld will be sending hard lines - but there's plenty of routes for us average Jane's, too!
Fantastic experience: Great gym, great routes, pretty expensive and the routes are updated about once a month if that.
Fantastic experience: Super fun gym with solid climbing vibes! The routes were fun and the atmosphere was solid!
Fantastic experience: Great staff great service. Routs are fun and engaging. Climbers are always kind and ready to help. There are lots of groups to join and classes to serve all kinds of skill sets.
Fantastic experience: Addictive
Negative experience: Be aware that if you report unsafe climbing practices, like walking directly under boulderers on the wall, the staff will simply do nothing. So much for promoting learning best practices. Be ready to fight for parking. And wait in line for routes. Too small for how many members they have. Unless you want to exercise at unconventional hours (like 6am or 9pm) be prepared to be frustrated by overcrowding. Used to be a favorite, convenient gym to get a climb in, but only on weekends now.
Thank you for the rating, Emilee!
Fantastic experience: Best route seeing I've seen out here in awhile. Even the v0 routes were interesting problems. More of a serious climber vibe than Movement RiNo.
Fantastic experience: The Program Manager, Bill, was very accommodating. 10/10
Fantastic experience: Lot's of options wonderful gym.
Positive experience: Really just needs more parking on busy days. Great gym.
Fantastic experience: I always walk out of this gym in a happy mood. They provide high quality equipment and services, and the staff is always great to be around. Bill Kinter, the project manager at the gym, is simply an elite athlete and coach. After doing some training with him, it's safe to say he's very knowledgable, great at what he does, and a pleasure to work with. I would even go as far as to call him a father figure in my life. Such an outstanding guy. If you're looking to join a climbing and fitness community in Boulder, this is the place to go.
Negative experience: I love the staff, they are super friendly, but the setters don’t use set screws at all. I spin probably a hold a session, and a friend ripped an entire volume off the wall. The setters should spend 10 extra minutes making their routes safe.
Fantastic experience: My kids are taking private lessons with Coach Abby. She is wonderful working with both my boys, including one with neurodivergent needs. We are so grateful for movement and Coach Abby!
Positive experience: Staff are the BEST, routes are creatively set, really fun yoga and fitness classes, and I have met all my friends there. They are good about building community and making you feel welcome
Negative experience: Oct 29 7pm- Garbage front desk customer service. If you wanna "fkn go home" so bad like you said just quit your job. All I did was ask a couple questions about the hours, never cursed at you. And at the end at 8:01 I was considering joining a membership but you were like na register is closed. I get technically it's 8 closing, but come on
Fantastic experience: I started going to movement in June this year and have been hooked ever since! Although I go to the Boulder location often, I like RiNo location for bouldering.
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym in Boulder. Has a big main lead-wall, plenty of top-ropes, a great training area and a decent bouldering zone. Too bad they don't have auto-belays, but there is a list to find partners to climb. Also, they provide ropes!
Fantastic experience: Always a stoping point when in boulder. While on vacation from New York I make sure everyone in the group knows I'm going to stop and climb. The routes, staff, and facilities are great! Would love to chat with the owner about growth opportunities one day. It's a must stop.
Positive experience: A pretty nice gym and it has some really interesting sets. The bouldering area is really tiny, unfortunately, but the rope area has more space.
Fantastic experience: Quality setting and facilities
Fantastic experience: After a bad experience at the first gym I climbed at (not in Boulder), coming to Movement felt like a breath of fresh air. The front desk staff was so helpful and not at all gatekeepers to newcomers (thanks Mathias!). The courses are pretty hard compared to the last location I climbed at but everyone seemed friendly and overall not as pretentious as the other gym. I look forward to trying some classes and using their gym, too.
Fantastic experience: Awesome facility. As a trad climber I loved the fist crack.
Negative experience: The culture here is pretty brotastic and unwelcoming. People will top rope the same route you’re leading. Others try to lead on the line you’re currently top roping. The people are super pretentious here. The gym itself is old and dirty. You could make a whole person from the amount of hair alone stick in the floor pad. On the plus side, the front desk staff is quite friendly.
Positive experience: It's where the local legends go. No auto belay tho. Great place, coffee next door.
Fantastic experience: The wonderful staff will help you learn to belay and get started on your climbing adventure. My family really enjoyed the rope we received to practice our knots at home. Thanks Kelso!
Fantastic experience: OK
Fantastic experience: Great route setting for all stores, awesome facilities, and super friendly staff (yo Nate, Sam, and everyone else!).
Fantastic experience: The OG location still a favorite place to climb indoors.
Fantastic experience: Abby is so cool! Hand stands after class!
Fantastic experience: Nice gym, cool staff & lots of route for any ability
Fantastic experience: High walls and tons of options!
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym in Boulder!! I love Movement so much. The space is beautiful, the staff are amazing, the classes are top notch, and the community is wonderful too. Recently I took Intro to Rope Climbing with Bill and Intro to Bouldering with Addy and learned sooooo much from these 2 incredible teachers. The front desk staff are super welcoming and the gym director Katie is great as well! Highly suggest joining Movement :)
Fantastic experience: Love the is gym!
Fantastic experience: Probably my favorite gym in Colorado, with the best setting of any gym I've ever climbed at.
Fantastic experience: Probably my favorite gym in Colorado, with the best setting of any gym I've ever climbed at.
Fantastic experience: The best
Thanks so much, William!
Fantastic experience: Great gym, bad parking after 5pm
Thanks for the 5 stars, Marc!
Fantastic experience: stopped by to check out the gym yesterday and definitely recommend it to anyone in the area! had an incredibly pleasant and informative time with Caleb at the desk.
Fantastic experience: stopped by to check out the gym yesterday and definitely recommend it to anyone in the area! had an incredibly pleasant and informative time with Caleb at the desk.
Thank you, Anna! We appreciate the review!
Positive experience: Just showing my appreciation for my gym after having interesting experiences elsewhere
Thank you for the review, Zain! We appreciate you and are glad to have you as part of the Movement community!
Fantastic experience: Smallest of all the gyms in CO, but very fun and everything was exactly like all locations. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get into Bouldering, Top or Lead Ropping among other things. I've been to all of the gyms you have access to and have been happy with all of them, Englewood the most. Have fun!
Thanks for the review and rating, Caleb!
Fantastic experience: Stopped in while in town for the holidays. Great spot; top rope and lead routes were far less crowded than my home gym. Nate at the front desk is the man! He helped us feel comfortable and welcomed during our first visit.
Thank you, Robert! We appreciate the review and agree that Nate is the man :)
Positive experience: Lots of options. Bouldering area is a little on the smaller side and can get crowded. Good array of gym equipment upstairs. Great spot if you have a friend to climb with, too many people for new people to feel comfortable trying out new routes.
Thanks for the review, Stephen! Inclusion is one of our core values and we want everyone to feel comfortable here. We hope everyone feels like it's an awesome thing to be new (yay growth!) and we offer a number of programs for climbers to connect and increase their confidence. Thank you for improving our community through your awareness of others!
Fantastic experience: Love this place! Such a warm, friendly, positive environment. I'm a new climber and have felt zero snobbery from anyone even though there are serious climbers here -- everybody is just looking to have a good time whatever that means for them. Highly recommend. Wish they'd bring their childcare back though
Glad you're having a great experience, Jenny! We have brought on some wonderful childcare providers and childcare will return on December 14th!
Fantastic experience: Great bouldering and amenities!
Thank you, Audra! We appreciate the review!
Fantastic experience: It's a great gym. Lots of walls and people climbing. Staff is very helpful and willing to help you with whatever you may need
Thank you for the review, Thomas! We are always happy to help :)
Negative experience: The gym is great and the climbing and routes. The staff however was condescending and lack experience. My friend and I have been climbing in this gym since it opened. So we have climbed here for over 10 years and then today a staff member told us that we were belaying incorrectly. They couldn’t really verbalize very well what we were doing exactly wrong but that we didn’t permanently have our hand in the break position ( which we are using g a gri gri not an ATC) the staff didn’t understand what a dynamic belay was which was concerning. I think the staff lacks experience. It’s strange to climb in a gym for 10 years and to have climbed with several of the staff members, the previous owner of the gym, route setters and coaches and then to have a staff member tell you your belaying incorrect and that they don’t know what a dynamic belay is. I’m not sure how I got away with incorrect belaying over the last ten year and that no one else ever realized this?
Fantastic experience: Amazing climbing! I've been climbing here, and I've always found it to be a good time, definitely seen alot more skilled and serious climbers in there and the routes can be very hard for the grade at times but overall it's fun!
Thank you for the stellar review, Sasha!
Positive experience: I like the walls and its gym it better than Baker. Always has something broken either machine or something in the bathroom. QC is not performed on a daily basis. Ive asked before to fix machines and they just don’t do it. One day someone is going to get hurt.
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb
Thanks so much for the 5-star review, Ben!
Fantastic experience: No complaints
Boom! That's what we like to see, thank you kindly for the review Jason.
Fantastic experience: This was my first home gym and I loved it. The staff was super kind and helpful when I first learned to climb, the member benefits are great, the facilities are clean and professionally maintained, I highly suggest giving it a go! The route setting team does a great job every week. The new routes are consistently challenging and fun!
Thank you Stefan, we are stoked to see you grow in the sport and within the community!
Negative experience: Let me start by saying that my home gym is the spot and I've been going there for several years at this point. I'm very used to a communal environment and seeing positive reinforcement for newbies and more advanced climbers alike. It's more of an old school feel and everyone is very down to earth. This ain't that. I came in to do a lead belay test and run some routes with my buddy about a week after coming back from a climbing trip out in Wyoming. The guy doing the test was so rude and condescending that I couldn't even focus enough to belay properly. I felt like I had committed a crime or something.. I ended up doing a little bouldering and leaving. The clientele is nothing to write home about either. Super judgemental and snide, will barely say 2 words to you. It's basically boulders' yuppie climbing crowd. *While this particular incident did happen pre COVID-19 it says an awful lot about an experience if it was so negative you remember it a full year later... I haven't been back since..
Hello there,
Thank you for taking the time to write us a review, thank you for giving us some items that we can work on to be a better part of the community. We apologize that you felt unwelcomed in your experience and would gladly welcome you back for another visit, in hopes that a second visit would remedy your first experience. This specific visit is challenging to address as it was over a year ago and there have been many changes during that time. We will definitely remind to our staff to be aware of intentions vs. impacts, especially when providing a belay test. If you would like to schedule a time to meet with me to discuss this further, I am here to listen. Call the desk and ask for Mike H 303-443-1505
Fantastic experience: This gym is very impressive, and the height of the building from outside is deceptive! I've only been a few times, but it's been a blast each and every one of them. It caters a variety of routes for both the novice and the pro alike!
Fantastic experience: Favorite gym in Boulder! Yes, the bouldering area is not large but they make up for that with excellent routesetting. Also love the route climbing, even the easier climbs are pretty interesting. The training area has a variety of hangboards with a bunch of weights and a good pulley system. I just wish the Moonboard wasn't so worn down! (Also a spray wall would make this gym )
Positive experience: A bit small, considering the number of routes.... Unless you can do top ripe and lead. Cause a quarter of the routes, and biggest wall, is lead only.
Thanks for your feedback, Patrick! In case you're interested, members have free access to our Intro to Rope Climbing class, and we also offer Intro to Lead Climbing classes. Feel free to email or call us if you have any questions!
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym in the State
Thanks for the love, Daniel! We appreciate you!
Fantastic experience: Good bouldering area and fitness facilities.
Thank you for your review, Iris!
Fantastic experience: Everything you'd want a climbing gym to be. Friendly staff, great community, excellent route setting, good vibes, and a fantastic facility.
Thank you for the review -- we appreciate you!
Fantastic experience: I love Movement! I learned to rock climb here, and have been going consistently for the past year and half (except when it was closed due to COVID-19). Friendly staff, great route setting, well maintained facilities. They have also handled the reopening well and safely so far. I’ll definitely miss climbing here.
Thank you for the review, Sally! We appreciate you and are glad to have you as part of the Movement community!
Fantastic experience: It's awesome. I pretty much live there!
Thanks for the 5 stars, Frank! We love having you at Movement!
Positive experience: I just love visiting this place over and over!
Thank you, Stacey! We are so glad you enjoy coming to Movement!
Fantastic experience: A lovely environment for bouldering, top roping, and leading. The staff is always super sweet and helpful. Looking forward to yoga classes starting up again someday as an added bonus - all of their instructors are amazing.
Thanks so much for your review, Nicole! We are excited to get our yoga and fitness classes started back up in the gym, as well. More details to come on this, so feel free to follow us on social media or subscribe to our newsletter, if you haven't already!
Fantastic experience: Good crag to get out of the hot summer sun or away from the winter winds.
Thanks for your review, Joseph! If you ever have suggestions on how we can keep providing a great experience, feel free to let us know at [email protected]!
Fantastic experience: Movement Climbing and Fitness is legendary. The routes are set with creativity and attention to detail, and the grades are super precise. The staff always greet me with a smile and stoke is always high. Come climb at this gym if you want to get shredded and climb 5.14 ASAP.
Thank you for your stellar review, Jesse! We appreciate your feedback. If you ever have suggestions on how we can continue providing a great experience, feel free to reach out to us directly at [email protected]. We hope to see you soon!
Fantastic experience: Have been climbing here for three years now. The facility is clean and spacious. Expect strong climbers good sets and busy week nights. I have enjoyed climbing here for awhile but recently hired staff sparked an interest in finally reviewing this spot. Management is fantastic and the front desk staff is stellar. Recently I asked the desk when one of the walls was going to be reset (had a project id been working on). The young lady at the desk (I believe her name was corina) went out of her way to figure out when my project would be reset. Everyone is friendly even the setters. Goes without saying, but I came for the climbing and will continue to climb here because of the atmosphere and the people. Thanks for keeping the gym clean for us. Climb on!
Thank you so much for your review! We are so glad you've enjoyed your experience at Movement Boulder. If you ever have suggestions for ways we can continue to provide a great experience, please know you can always reach out to us directly at [email protected]!
