Boston Athletic Club: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Any update on the reopening timeline? Thanks
Negative experience: Are you ever going to reopen again?
Negative experience: Won’t reopen or attempt to do so safely with everything going on. Cashing in on the PPP loan which you can view online this whole time. My guesstimate is it’ll reopen at the beginning of the year since the loans are expired now.
Negative experience: Why is the club closed? Will it be reopening at some point?
Negative experience: It's time to open up!
Negative experience: In a year the BAC team has done nothing for members and refuses to update us with any substantive information. I mostly used the club for tennis because of its convenient location - though the tennis accommodations were underwhelming to begin with The lack of communication and overall unwillingness to even test reopening strategies is extremely disappointing. I will find somewhere else to play, and now that I have a home gym I will never be back.
Negative experience: RE-OPEN! You've had all this time to come up with a safe, effective plan to re-open with limited capacity (even do online bookings!) and sanitation stations. But instead, you cut your community off from a healthy outlet. You will never again see my business!
Hi Ryan, Since March 15, 2020, we have continued our commitment to health and safety as our top priority: the health and safety of our members, employees, allied partners, and the South Boston community. In the past year, the world, United States, Massachusetts, and South Boston have taken serious and necessary steps to remain healthy. These deliberate actions continue to center around distancing (commitment to isolation and quarantine), wearing facemasks, proper hygiene, community health initiatives, and severe restrictions that are far-reaching. Isolation and quarantine have been the most effective in reducing the spread of COVID – 19 and more importantly, reducing high infection and hospitalization rates. The mandated restrictions, the existence of COVID -19, and the business environment have been devastating to the health club industry. Moreover, forecasting is nearly impossible in this environment. We continue to believe better days are on the horizon. BAC thrives on connection and in-person experiences. Our goal is to survive these circumstances and emerge ready to assume our place as a legendary South Boston health, fitness, and sports club destination. Thank you for your patience.
Fantastic experience: Awesome group exercises and the instructors. Worth it.
Thanks for the 5-star review, Rachana! We're so glad to hear that you're loving the group classes at Boston Athletic Club!
Fantastic experience: Front desk worker named Nell is super friendly and helpful! Great staff
Thanks for the 5-star review, Jacqueline! We greatly appreciate your positive feedback!
Fantastic experience: Mmmm? Probably not where I was headed. Sorry google, never been to this place either.
Fantastic experience: Great location, plenty of equipment. Friendly and helpful staff. It has classes, a pool, personal trainers and as many other extra benefits as one could hope for (to include child care). I doubt there's a better gym in the Boston Area. Don't normally rate places, but they had an oddly low rating and felt compelled to speak up for them.
Hi David, thank you so much for your review and feedback. We truly appreciate it. We hope to see you again very soon!
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Has it all. Pool, Jacuzzi, Yoga/Dance/Exercise Classes, Great equipment, Personalized training, on site physical therapy, massage, chiropractor and a hair salon. Childcare available. Locker room and showers are very clean. Steam room, and Sauna. Front desk staff is great. Towel service. Given all of this, you can’t beat the price $79/mth.
Hi Kelly, we are pleased you enjoy your time here at Boston Athletic Club! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we truly appreciate it! We hope to see you again soon
Fantastic experience: Took a water aerobics class w my Mom! I have no idea what it's called but afterwards I realized that these older women are in better shape than me!! This place is the BEST, hands down!
Fantastic experience: Helpful knowledgeable staff, trainers, massage, PT, Chiropractor, pool, hot tub, saunas, tennis courts, racquetball, basketball, fitness classes, bikes and machines of all kinds. Take a tour and talk to the staff, not a perfect club and expensive at $70 a month but few can match it, Clean with people of all ages and races you will be welcomed no matter what shape or size you are because they are definitely friendly here.
Positive experience: Great works out space in South Boston. Biggest negative is the tennis courts are not well lit. A few inexpensive skylights would improve it immensely.
Positive experience: I when the there the first time was good but the second time was awesome I when the swimming and then I ate I loved it
Negative experience: Was called racial slur my first week there. It seems like an old boys club, with lots of townie old men. Small section with gym equipment but I was told it's expanding soon. I'm not sure how long I will remain a member. Edit: continued membership, haven't had any problems since. I hope it was an isolated incidence. Most other people have been friendly. Rich is super welcoming and the front desk staff are great. The weight section was expanded to a large room with much more space, while keeping the old area as well.
Positive experience: The front desk staff are really friendly, there's a variety of equipment and classes, and there's a pool. Definitely no shortage of barbells which is nice. But that's where the benefits end. I'm paying $90/mo to deal with one leg press, people who don't rerack and leave 90lb of plates loaded on the bench, and it looks like a lot of the equipment hasn't been replaced since this place opened. WiFi is spotty at best, showers are gross and old. Tried finding a bar pad for hip thrusts and the only one was old, broken, and just as effective as wrapping a towel around the bar (which I did instead). Outside of equipment, the parking lot is riddled with pot holes, the hours are mediocre at best, and guest passes for members are $20. It has a decent amount of equipment for sure but I've been a member of nicer gyms that cost half this. You're really only paying for location.
Fantastic experience: Water Aerobics classes with Lori , Yoga with Terry and Group Exercise with Rhea are great classes. A health club with a lot to offer. The members are encouraging to one another.
Fantastic experience: Clean place❤
Positive experience: Best gym around that's still affordable.
Negative experience: 1h30 walk to get there to practice in the batting cages advertised on the website to find out they've been removed at least 2 years ago...
Negative experience: Terrible customer service! Recreational leagues are a joke! Our team disqualified from playoffs due to the lack of managers inability to organize. On top of that we were offered $36 like we were playing for money. Very disappointed and will never attend any other events or activities.
Positive experience: Big gym. Favorite part was the weekday basketball pickup games. They also have a pool, steam room and sauna. The gym is old but they are in the process of remodeling the place.
Positive experience: Nice gym with everything I need nearby home in Southie, but they are constantly changing things and removing stuff within the gym which is not always for the better. That coupled with the consistent price hikes earns a 3 star rating from me.
Positive experience: Great huge gym and good customer service. Staff gave me a good tour around the facilities. I was impressed with its offerings. However, I thought is was really odd that I didn't see a single person of color (including Asian descent) in any of their comprehensive facilities for the 1.5 hours I stayed at the gym in the evening. Kinda weird.
Positive experience: Very gud place .want to know that instructor is available for swimming classes for adult ladies.
Positive experience: Little bit dated but has everything you need.
Fantastic experience: I've been a member of many gyms in the Boston area, and Boston Athletic Club is my favorite. As long as I live in or near Southie, I'll be a member.
Fantastic experience: The BAC is a great gym with a strong community vibe to it. They have mostly everything you'll need from basketball, swimming, tennis, indoor soccer, to all the fitness and exercise equipment you could ask for.
Negative experience: they're going to close down the field house...what's up with that?
Fantastic experience: BAC is a great place for working out and they have lots of working machines, and your able to get a complete workout anytime! They also have a PT place right inside called Boston Physical Therapy, however small it's awesome also! Did I mention they have drinks with electrolytes in them also?
Positive experience: Convenient, center of downtown, really the only thing in that area, overpriced.
Fantastic experience: BAC is pricey, but has it all, which is something I didn't anticipate that I'd enjoy but now I find myself exercising more because there is so much to do.
Fantastic experience: the best customer care ever! gym is spotless and shiny extremely nice employees and so many options the pool the tennis court the basketball court the cafeteria the gym I just love it
Negative experience: Customer care is so low. I don't get why theyve got so many members. Price high, people unwilling to help. They seem like they want to get rid of you asap.
Negative experience: The price was high, but I was willing to bite the bullet because they do have a lot of options instead of just weights and/or cardio. But they would not cancel my membership without a specific form and charged me for a whole month after I moved out of Boston, even though I reached out over a week before my membership ended. Very poor final impression of what previously would have been a decent experience.
Fantastic experience: Just moved to Boston this year, and I love this gym. So many options for sports, cardio, and strength training, you cannot get bored -- and the staff are beyond helpful. There's even a sports bar, open to the public and perfect for hanging out after your workout. Plus, the membership is awesome and diverse - all ages and fitness levels will feel comfortable here. That said, it's definitely a no-frills experience. If you want lattes or cucumber water, you'll need to bring them yourself. Or you may want to try the much fancier spots downtown, like Equinox. But for those who just like to sweat and have fun? This place is awesome.
Negative experience: All in all-- I've been treated better at the supermarket checkout. Not anything near what you'd expect for mid-range club service. My friend, who is a member, tried to go online to print a guest pass. Site was and is still down. We went to the front desk and the very folks who told us to go online said we needed a pass, else we'd have to pay $20 to get in that day. Lady at the front was rude about it, denying the site is down, but it may be that it's Friday afternoon or she wasn't having a good day.
