Hoosier Heights Bloomington is a vibrant climbing gym that offers a welcoming environment for climbers of all skill levels. With an impressive variety of climbing routes, including top-rope, auto-belay, and bouldering areas set in a unique repurposed church, visitors find it both fun and engaging. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable climbing experience, making it a favorite spot for families and individuals alike.

Visitors have often mentioned the following highlights:

  • Well-maintained facilities: Clean and inviting environment with a great layout for climbing and workouts.
  • Friendly staff: Many users appreciate the kindness and support shown by the staff, contributing to a sense of community.
  • Variety of activities: Beyond climbing, the gym provides free yoga classes and a range of fitness options, catering to diverse interests.
  • Community orientation: Special events and ongoing engagement help foster a friendly climbing atmosphere.

However, some users have raised concerns regarding:

  • Staff interaction: A few reviews noted a lack of attentiveness from the staff during peak hours, which could detract from the overall experience.
  • Air quality: Some visitors have mentioned that the indoor air quality could be improved, especially during busy times.
  • Membership costs: The recent price increases have been a point of contention, leading some members to feel that the value for money is diminishing.

Overall, Hoosier Heights Bloomington stands out as a cherished local gym that has the potential for growth and improvement while continuing to provide a unique climbing experience.

Positive experience: Everything is good, just not good air。 Hope to keep door open or somewhat! Please,So Smelly !!!!!!!

Positive experience: Took 3 boys there and they had a blast. Super cool rock climbing area. If children are under 12 the accompanying adult must hook and unhook the ropes. Climbing areas definitely have an odor of locker rooms lol. But still worth the money and experience!

Negative experience: I was treated very rudely by one of the people at the desk. It was to the point where he poorly explained their policies that are poorly explained on their site. I felt as if they did not want me present in their facility. I’ll never return and advise anyone who’ll listen to follow suit. Customer service and human decency was lacking during my visit.

Negative experience: the foam pit had big pads in it that caused my girlfriend whiplash when she fell. get rid of the pads leave the foam blocks and it would be a much better landing. Thats the only problem we had until that it was fun.

Fantastic experience: I thought it overall was nice. I took 2 teenage boys and they enjoyed it for a few hours. Staff was very courteous. Since we were first timers, we got the orientation spill. It was very helpful. Wear cool, comfortable clothing bc you do get hot. If you’re a mom with teenagers and need to keep them busy, this is a good place. I used the treadmills while the boys free climbed. You could see from there. Will return.

Positive experience: Hoosier Heights is a fun spot and the interior is lovely but I think the membership strategy needs work, as well as the culture around hearing feedback from members. They only have two payment tiers: unlimited ($70/month) and per-climb ($20). The pricing structure makes it tough to participate as a person with disabilities. When I gave feedback about this, the staff member on the phone was dismissive. I know friends who canceled their memberships after years of daily climbing because the gym quality didn't match the price and they'd rather pick another sport than climb HH. It would be good to have a middle tier for people who climb several times a months-ish due to disability or any other reason. Many gyms have accessible climbing rates with proof of EBT/Medicaid but Hoosier Heights doesn't offer anything like that, either. The all-or-nothing membership strategy seems unnecessarily exclusive and their lack of accessibility measures doesn't match the "climbing is for everyone," attitude they project outward through marketing, etc.

Negative experience: The facility and climbing gym itself is great, & worth 5 starts some of the people who work there can be rude though. I had been there for a minute & was asking a question and in the middle of our conversation she picked up the phone and had a whole other conversation for a couple minutes before getting back to me!! At least tell the guy on the phone to wait a minute until you take care of the person in front of you first! I find it very dismissive & disrespectful.

Fantastic experience: Climbing is a lot of fun and they also have a gym and offer yoga classes that are free for members. It is a bit small however compared to other climbing gyms that I have been to.

Negative experience: Staff is kind and knowledgeable. The boulder gym being in a church is super cool. However, the place is a playground for children. There’s no supervision from adults at all. I’ve had almost 10 cases in 2 weeks of seeing groups of children either climbing all up and down boulder walls with no safety precautions. Worse, they’ve come into the actual gym and used workout equipment as a jungle gym. Kids climbing on hanging ropes, stacking boxes, etc. One of the worst was seeing a young teenage girl and her young brother “bench press”. The younger boy nearly crushed himself. Later on while doing an exercises on the floor, kids were literally stepping over top of me. I’ll be cancelling the membership here, as I’m concerned for my safety.

Fantastic experience: I've been climbing here for years. The new gym offers a great ropes room, with top-rope routes, auto-belays, and lead routes. There is a separate bouldering room + an old-school workout room. There is also a very nice yoga space that I think is second to none in Bloomington. The routes are changed fairly routinely, so you can typically find new warm-ups and projects. Staff is friendly and helpful, and they also sell gear. I feel lucky that we have HH in Bloomington

Positive experience: I used to love Hoosier Heights but its progressively gone downhill over the years. Don't get me wrong its not a bad climbing gym. They have a potential to turn the overall experience and culture around if they keep working at it. One of the cool things about hoosier heights is that you get a lot of different people because its located in a college town. Being located in a college town also brings a lot of gym bros types that can ruin the overall experience. A majority of the time it seems like the people aren't intentionally being rude or annoying. More staff interaction with climbers would help a lot. In addition to that they need to figure out a way to keep the staff/setters they already have. Pros: Friendly staff, solid route setting, cool location, decent gym equipment and climbing training tools. Cons: They constantly are cycling through staff, membership has gone up, the routes (especially lead routes) could be reset more often, increased gym traffic has led to overcrowding of routes and problems (please extend the hours), parking can be tough during peak hours. TLDR: They seem like they are making a comeback but at the current state Hoosier Heights would get a C+ from me.

Negative experience: The "community" climbing gym turned into just a climbing gym with no community. That's the biggest issue is the people who know better or care have all left and there is no longer pushback on management to do what is good for the gym. The owner lives in Colorado and DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR ANY CLIMBING COMMUNITY OR HIS EMPLOYEES. He is running the gym like a pure profit making machine. There are some quality staff left, but so many more have quit due to very poor compensation. Moreover, the membership cost went from $45 to $70 in a year with much worse route setters, and flooded with toddlers and a double dose of college students which sometimes means waiting in line for a route at an indoor climbing gym.

Fantastic experience: Friendly community, much more than just a gym/exercise facility. Always clean, good variety of routes and boulder problems. The boulder room is in the sanctuary (building used to be a church) and is absolutely beautiful.

Negative experience: Do some research into this climbing gym, until things change, until a light is shined onto some past experiences and continuous neglect and mistreatments of both employees and the community as a whole, I advise against this membership. Check Facebook tags for more

Eli Metzler-Prieb 5 years ago

Negative experience: Lack of competition means Hoosier Heights Bloomington has little reason to prioritize the member experience and the business continues to make decisions that clearly communicates profit is more important than fostering a climbing community. The desk / climbing staff are wonderful, the setting is good, however, the management-level decisions make me wish I had another gym option in town. The Bloomington climbing community is massively friendly, welcoming, and stoked on climbing. On any given weekend at the Red you'll see familiar faces from the gym. Hoosier Heights Bloomington has provided a space for this community to hangout, climb, train, and make friends, however, the gym itself is just a location, Hoosier Heights doesn't feel committed to strengthening the climbing community or invested in their members. One example... Hoosier Heights recently announced a number of membership price increases: - Monthly Auto-pay memberships increased from $59.00 to $64.00 - Month-to-Month memberships increased from $74.00 to $89.00 - Single membership start up fees have increased from $25 to $35 - Family membership start up fees have increased from $50 to $65 Along with the pricing changes the following changes are coming into affect as well: - 'Free friend friday' (Members can bring a friend, for free, on that last friday of the month) will soon no longer be available. Members now get 5 free guest passes PER YEAR. (This info per a call to the desk staff at the gym) - Expanded hours - Open early a number of days a week. I am unsure on details. - 'Free first visit for a friend of member' - Previously members could bring a friend (who's never been to Hoosier Heights before) for free. The Hoosier Heights site now indicates "Additionally, members when climbing with first time friends are eligible to purchase a discounted day pass for their friend!" I am unsure on the details of this change. Personally the price increases feel like a money grab. There are no notable improvements to the space or facility, no announcement of better wages for the staff, and no extended amenities. $89 is frankly ridiculous for a medium sized city in Indiana and prices out many IU students and community members who don't have much disposable income. Pros - Many free fitness and yoga classes. IF you are a user of this perk than the membership fee becomes more palatable when considering the cost of classes individually - Reciprocal memberships with Hoosier Heights Indy and Climb Nulu - Repurposed church is a really cool space to hangout / climb in - Community events are held occasionally (with food and drink) and are fun. One example was a fun costume-climbing night around Halloween - Louie, the cute gym cat that hangs around - Provides a physical space for the Bloomington climbing community Cons - No shower facilities - Very small gym / lifting area. Consists of a single squat rack (1 barbell), two benches, a rack of dumbbells (up to about 50lbs), and a set of kettlebells. The space is suitable for 2 or 3 people at a time (depending on what exercises they are doing), but no more. - High price, particulary for month-to-month memberships - Minimal perks / benefits related to introducing friends and family to climbing, or bringing a friend who likes to climb, but cannot afford a membership

Negative experience: Hoosier heights has a monopoly on climbing gyms in the area, so they're pretty pricey for a very average quality gym.

Natalie Steffen 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: I had a great time with my friends here. Fun is available for the whole family. Reasonably priced day passes. Staff was helpful and made me feel safe. Can’t wait to return! Thanks for being awesome.

Fantastic experience: New member and very happy! Everyone is kind, helpful, and the staff has already started treating me and my partner like friends. Love the gym and very excited about the community.

Peter Mermilliod 6 years ago

Negative experience: Not a good gym to stop at on a road trip: So this is a little petty, but i stopped by this gym while on a road trip and they wanted me to pay full first timer price. Thats 140% of the day pass price, even though i had all my own gear, have hundreds of hours of climbing experience, and was only going to auto belay. It is a little frustrating to me because most gyms ive been to only charge that price to "first time climbers" as a deal to get them climbing without having to break the bank with renting all the equipment. Its for people who need basic rope training and gear. i.e. not me, or so has been my general experience in the South-East USA. I dont know if this is a fair assessment, but this gym really felt like they cared more about money than building relationships in the climbing community. I hope im wrong, but i will look for other places to climb when driving through Indy. It looked cool though, so thats an extra star.

Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough amazing things about this facility and staff. They have brought a new passion of mine to life with their kind help and outstanding facility. If you are hesitate about getting into such an amazing sport, I would suggest a visit to this location where you will Not be judged and taught how to properly climb and find some new friends!

Fantastic experience: Great first-time climbing experience!

Negative experience: Way over priced 25 dollars for yeah smallest selection of bouldering/ top rope I've ever seen. Staff was rude. Started to bleed while I was climbing, asked atafs for a band aid or gaus. Was told that they didn't have any first aid equipment, and that they weren't allowed to give any first aid, and that I shouldn't climb anymore. Then staff member turned their back on me and started to discuss her weekend plans.

Fantastic experience: Hoosier Heights Bloomington is Awesome! The staff are professional, helpful, and supportive of climbers of all levels of experience and the facility is amazing! Not only does it have an awesome roped climbing building where you can top-rope, auto-belay, and lead climb, but it has a separate chapel with a huge indoor boulder and training rooms, weight rooms and lounge in the basement, and a huge yoga space in the original chapel.

Gin Asthrun 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: Superb. This was my first climbing gym, and honestly I thought all climbing gyms were like this BOY was a wrong! Top rope room is huge and way more exciting than bouldering imo, auto-bulaze(?) and partner climbing available. PLUS ROUTES RESET ALL THE TIME. Gotta climb everything while its there!! but if you can't wait a month and they'll be things you might be able to climb and explore more. Members get free shoe rentals on Tuesday Thursday, I think the visitors get free shoe day on Tuesday?? not sure but hey lots of cool stuff! Membership here is costly but covers other gyms (even one in Kentucky) so go ask around!

Zach Mitchell 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: It is one of the coolest setups I've ever seen for a climbing gym. Separate bouldering, roped climbing, and yoga all in a B-town historical building. Routes are great, updated frequently, clean holds. Little pricey for a day pass ($25 is what you'd pay in San Francisco), but worth it.

Fantastic experience: Yesterday was the second time ever taking my son Matthew and some of his friends (16 &15yr olds), once again they had an absolute blast! Not only do they learn planning and patience, this place also unknowingly teaches them trust, humility, and social interaction with every generation/type of person in a safe and supportive environment!!! Excellent staff, very laid-back, but with a sharp eye for safety! Everyone should try this at least once! I was living vicariously through Matthew the whole time from a distance due to all my old injuries from car accidents, fibromyalgia, and recent surgeries on my arm/hand. Man, I wish I was able to climb right beside him!

Fantastic experience: I just renewed my membership and I'm super hyped to start climbing regularly again. I went to 3 different places while I was living in Orlando this past semester...none of those came close to Hoosier Heights. I climb on my own for my daily workout so top-roping isn't an option and I'd rather eat my knee caps than boulder..so i'm pumped that that you have multiple walls with auto belays. They change it up and add new routes pretty frequently..and the crazier the route name, the better. I'm pretty sure my kid brother only visits me in B-town because he knows I'll take him climbing. I took advantage of the bring-a-buddy promotion they had a while back and my roommate and I had a blast. I purchased all my climbing gear at Hoosier Heights..so they have everything you need to go from absolute beginner to climbing enthusiast. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and always keep the gym safe and looking fresh. The atmosphere is chill. The pandora station is fire. I have nothing but great things to say.

Fantastic experience: Out of the way but worth the drive. Facility is well made and creative. Safety is very obviously respected. Staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. They truly care. My son loves the summer camps.

Connor Bowman 8 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is my favorite place in Bloomington. With the friendly workers and the great route setting, this gym provides a great community to get to know other climbers. It may not be the biggest climbing gym ever, but it is for sure cozy. In addition to being a great place for returning climbers, Hoosier Heights Bloomington provides a great first-time experience for people who want to try climbing out. 6/5 stars from me.

Clay Coppinger 8 years ago

Fantastic experience: Its one of those goofy restaurants that lets you climb on the walls! The food selection is limited but I'm starting to think it's more about the wall climbing gimmick anyway.

A. Makela 8 years ago

Fantastic experience: Excellent indoor climbing gym with a variety of trails on auto belay and otherwise. Brandon taught a me and a group of 16 other people who to do everything and we all were able to successfully climb with excellent borrowed harnesses and climbing shoes. Thanks for the excellent customer experience!

Fantastic experience: The atmosphere is great, with many helpful and friendly staff and climbers alike. The routes are changed fairly frequently and there is a great variety in the routes both in the bouldering room and top rope room. A great gym over all.

Natalia M 12 years ago

Fantastic experience: I think it's a fun activity and the fact is ---there is not much to do in B-town. So this is just perfect. It does get a bit too hot in the summer, so I wish for a better AC but it's a great workout. I love being a member---free yoga once a week is a nice perk. Overall, one happy climber. :)

Leigh M Smith (LeighMSmith_) 13 years ago

Fantastic experience: Been climbing at HH for years. The most comfortable and welcoming atmosphere of any gym I've been to. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, they all show a passion and love for climbing. Its a great place for ever level of experience. Great place for a weekend fun, or you can get your kids involved in the climbing clubs competitions or trips. The only cons are probable the heating cooling, it can get pretty bad. And could use a little more cleaning here and there, but it adds to the vibe... if you're into that sort of thing.
