Our comment from FitFit United States about YMCA of Monroe County - Southeast:
The YMCA of Monroe County - Southeast in Bloomington is a cherished community hub that prioritizes health and wellness. Members consistently praise the friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere, highlighting the personal trainer, Jeanette Molina, for her exceptional guidance and support in helping clients achieve their fitness goals. Many users appreciate the diverse classes, including Zumba and boot camps, as well as the well-maintained swimming pools that are perfect for families.
However, some members have expressed concerns regarding facility cleanliness and the need for updated equipment, particularly in terms of the weight training area. The issue of limited accessibility for children to certain facilities and pools has also been noted. While the YMCA has received feedback for an overall clean environment, improvements in maintenance and upgrades could enhance the experience even further.
Overall, the YMCA of Monroe County - Southeast remains a great choice for individuals and families seeking a supportive fitness community, and the staff is dedicated to ensuring that all members feel valued and included.
YMCA of Monroe County - Southeast: Opinions

Fantastic experience: I appreciate the service that YMCA offers in general. They truly provide much needed support for their community’s over all health and wellness. I want to share a special compliment to Jeanette Molina, my personal trainer at YMCA of Monroe County- - Southeast. Jeanette is that unique kind of trainer who cares deeply for her clients that she can make them work hard and find such joy in the grueling half or whole hour sessions day in and day out. At each and every session guided by Jeanette - I feel accompanied by her gentleness and strength. If you’re like me who have a serious need for fitness training due to health issues or simply desire to work on improving your body for over all health find Jeanette Molina and start your fitness journey. I promise you will be healthier and happier.
Hi Catherine! We're so happy to hear about your positive experience with Jeanette. Thank you for sharing, and for the kind words about our Y!
Fantastic experience: Best ymca ever!!!
Thank you, Mary!
Fantastic experience: Jeannette the trainer does a great job and works with your individual health needs.
Hi Jennifer, thank you for the feedback! We're thrilled to hear you're enjoying your personal training sessions with Jeanette.
Negative experience: This location needs to offer a Men and Women’s sauna. Health benefits have been proven. Other locations have them. I requested one around 2020 and was told they could cause heart attacks. That translates into overweight Men who are unhealthy using saunas irresponsibly. Tired of living in a Man’s world I’m not a Man. It’s possible to make a very small sauna with cedar planks 6 feet by 10 feet very easily. Like the one at the spa and pool at the Conrad in downtown Indianapolis.
Thank you for the comment—we value hearing feedback from our members and guests and hearing how we can improve the Y experience. If you ever feel inclined, you can always share more feedback with us directly at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Jeanette has really helped me improve my hips and lower back with targeted personal training exercises. I have been training for a few weeks, and I've already noticed major improvement in my mobility and pain levels. I highly recommend her as a trainer for anyone recovering or rehabilitating from muscle injuries or imbalances.
Hi Nejla! We're so happy to hear Jeanette has been able to help you feel better through personal training. Thank you for sharing and for being part of our Y!
Fantastic experience: Our family loves the Y! My son has participated in the Tiger Sharks Swim team for years and we couldn’t love it more. CoachesTaylor, Josh, Jonah—the entire coaching staff are really unparalleled. Trainer Jeanette is amazing! We’ve only been working together for a few weeks but she has been so thoughtful in asking about my fitness goals, being totally transparent on what we’re doing and why, and is a fantastic encouraging force (while also pushing me to work hard)!
Hi Amanda, we're so happy to hear you and your family our loving our Y staff and programs! Thank you for the positive feedback and for being a part of our Y.
Fantastic experience: Trainer Jeanette is GREAT!! Jeanette takes time to learn your goals and prepares a weekly schedule toward obtaining those goals. She explains muscle groups involved and relationship/benefit. I highly recommend Jeanette!!
We agree, Leland—Jeanette is incredible! We're happy to hear you're enjoying your personal training sessions with her.
Fantastic experience: Ymca un lugar ideal donde tiene cabida toda la familia para disfrutar del deporte y compartir con colegas, el personal súper amable y las instalaciones excelentes
Gracias por su comentario, Francisco!
Negative experience: We aren't from the immediate area, but we pass through enough that we have tried to utilize this location. The staff hassles my family members every time. We actively go to the other Bloomington location because of this. Otherwise, it's clean and new... But not worth the confrontation.
Fantastic experience: Sofia is a genuine soul that our kids (4 and 2) love to see when we drop them off at child watch. Updated free weight gym is awesome and has most everything a weightlifter needs!
Thank you for the positive feedback and the kind words for Sofia, Mitchell! We're thrilled to hear you and your family are loving our Y.
Fantastic experience: Excellent workout facility
Thank you for the kind review, Troy!
Positive experience: Nice basketball courts, pool, and running track. Antiquated work out equipment. Almost impossible to find a useful cable grip, anything with "padding" is degraded to the level of painful, and a few of the pieces should be avoided altogether (ie the fly machine that pulls unevenly and can cross itself, and seated thigh machine being held together with a screw and digs into your shins). Given the cost of membership I seriously wonder where the money goes as it hasn't been reinvested in this place for a long time. If it's convenient, this place is OK, but there's better out there. Update: new weight room is really nice. Still can't find any good grips for the machines so I've just bought my own to use. It's convenient enough for me but realized today that I've been paying for a family plan for a few years now and still can't involve my daughter (11) in many of the benefits. Kids are limited to the pool, basketball court (which is hit or miss) and running track. Really needs to have a fitness area where parents and pre-teens can workout, stretch, yoga etc. Even supervised youth are limited. After, 12 there's more but just be aware that under 12 the family isn't really "family".
Thank your for your review and feedback, Ged! We are in the process of repairing much of our Wellness Center equipment this week, and we are always looking to improve the experience we deliver at the Y. If you ever feel inclined, you can always share more feedback with us directly at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: The pool was amazing
Thank you for the review, Aria! We're glad to hear you're enjoying our heated pools.
Fantastic experience: Great facility; welcoming staff; particularly enjoy the daily trivia question and daily vocabulary word.
Thank you for the kind words, Jordan. We're happy to hear you get a little extra boost from the Welcome Center's word of the day and trivia question!
Fantastic experience: Love the classes , pool and the large amount of weight equipment . The Employees and people at the club are friendly . There are some repairs needed in the shower area . Love that there is an outdoor track and courts too.
Hi Robbie, thank you for your feedback! We're happy you're enjoying our YMCA, and we'll pass along your comment about the showers to our facilities team.
Fantastic experience: My kid and I go here all the time. There is always a basketball court he can play on with his friends (unlike the NE YMCA, this one has quality basketballs too) and I love the new expanded weight room.
Thank you for the feedback, Aaron! We're happy to hear you enjoy our Southeast Y facility and amenities. We'll pass along the message about Northwest Y basketballs—we appreciate you bringing the matter to our attention!
Negative experience: I had to cancel my membership today. The reason we go is to give our toddler time in the pool. We live several towns over and make the YMCA a special trip… more than one occasion they have closed the Multi-use pool without warning. Today we were in for only 5 minutes then they closed it… saying they were low staff- but they kept the lap pool open. If any pool should close to staffing it should be the lap pool and keep the multi use pool open. 1) the multi use pool has a ramp with rails making it inclusive to people with reduced mobility. 2) it has a kid section where child can touch. 3) it has lap lanes. Also, a year ago I wrote a comment card stating the changing table in the men’s room was in a poor location- under a set of stairs and having the lost and found tote under it made it difficult to use. Instead of moving the lost and found tote they removed the table… if you have toddler(s) or mobility issues. It is not the YMCA I would recommend.
Hi Mack! We sincerely apologize for your poor experience at our facility.
Unfortunately, we typically close our Multipurpose Pool instead of our Main Pool due to the nature of our locker rooms leading out to our Main Pool. Operating our Multipurpose Pool while closing our Main Pool would leave the Main Pool unguarded, as people need to walk through the area to enter the Multipurpose Pool area and we cannot leave a body of water unguarded.
As for the changing table in the men's locker room, our Facilities team relocated the changing table from under the stairs to a private stall.
We understand your decision to end your membership and hear your valid concerns. Our team is working to resolve these issues, and in the future, we would appreciate another chance to earn your business again. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Negative experience: The facility itself is pretty nice. But I'm passing through town as a truck driver on break and they asked me like a million questions just for a day. Pand then a lot of obnoxious teenagers come there. Be olderly people. Organized and calm, but teenagers are very obnoxious. And after around two a lot of teenagers came in Also, the only facility I've went to for a day. Pass that asked literally at least 20 questions, including COVID. Something else they make you sign ablaver. Why can't I just pay the fee and come in? They take a picture. Ask for your full name, your phone number. Your address. I was just trying to get a daypass. I thought that was kind of unnecessary.
Thank you for your feedback! We're sorry to hear you had a negative experience at our Monroe County YMCA and have passed your comments on to our Membership Director to improve the day pass process. If you're in the area again, we hope you'll return to our Y for a smoother, more streamlined experience.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful gym! They are extremely accommodating to disabled and elderly. They are of great value to those in the community who cannot afford a gym membership or summer programs. This is one of the few gyms that have great child care programs so parents can decompress with a nice sweat. My son is finally learning to swim thanks to great instructors at swim class. The pools and hot tubs are nice. I really enjoy the classes although I wish we had different dance classes-like hip hop. This ymca is clean and staff are very friendly. Very grateful for them!
Negative experience: To much texting. People running in the wrong lanes.bath rooms need more attention. Seems no one is there to observe what goes on.
Fantastic experience: Great staff and fantastic communication has been my experience. Reviewing to offset the Karens. Honestly don't know why someone would feel entitled to communication with a director, as the name implies they are likely very busy. The front desk works above and beyond, the wellness staff get those scrappy green towels stocked and folded while still being available to members to answer questions. Biggest ups to the maintenance team, those folks work hard every year to bring new and exciting things to camp including building equipment, extensive remodels and all them I've talked to have been cordial and uplifting conversations. All in all I'd say our SE Y beats every other YMCA I've been to by leagues.
Negative experience: Absolute lazy staff. Sat there waiting behind the front desk people for 20 minutes waiting to use the racket ball equipment. The short haired front desk person and lifeguard ignore my girlfriend and me until I have to walk infront of them. Then once I finally ask again she gives me an attitude about how it’s eight minutes until close and she can’t give it to me. Instead of mentioning politely the 20 minutes we waited that it was too late to use (which staff last week allowed us to use the 15 minutes before closing) she ignores us completely. Real welcoming staff you have here, might cancel my membership or stop coming here all together.
Fantastic experience: Great place to swim and workout. This is the place to go on a Saturday and Sunday during the winter time with your kids. You can't get them out of the pool.
Thank you so much for your kind review, Terrie! We are so glad the Y can be a place of refuge for the family during these winter days ❄️
Positive experience: Great place to work out. Could use a sauna or steam room in the upstairs locker area.
Thank you, Pat, for your review! We are passing this comment on to our directors, as we value our members' input. If you have any other feedback, please feel free to reach us at [email protected]!
Fantastic experience: We have loved our YMCA membership this year. I’ve brought my toddler almost every week to swim—The pool is excellent (space and temperature-wise) and rarely crowded on weekdays. I have enjoyed the Zumba classes offered (quite the community there) and the opportunity for childcare is so helpful. Feeling very lucky to have this facility so close to us!
Thank you so much, Claire, for your five-star review and for sharing your experience at the Y! We truly aim to serve the entire family, and we're so glad your family can find support and community here at the Y. Thanks again!
Fantastic experience: Great place!
Negative experience: Do not honor elderly silver sneakers. They want contribution with out contributing.
Hi Michael, we apologize for the inconvenience. While we do not take Silver Sneakers, we do accept Silver & Fit, a different Medicare program. We are always striving to give a better member experience, so if you ever feel inclined, please let us know how we can improve by emailing us at [email protected].
Positive experience: Gets the job done, but doesn't serve it's most common customer base very well. Most people come to lift weights, but the free weight room is by far the smallest room in the gym, even though it's always the most crowded. Seems counter intuitive when there's rooms that are double the size with 0-3 people in them at all times. The cardio room right besides the free weight room is double if not triple the size as the free weight room and it's never even filled to half capacity. The crescent room across the courts is always empty and locked. They could put some free weights in the crescent room and it would definitely serve a higher common denominator of people. Second most common goer goes to play basketball. But most days 4/6 courts are reserved for a dozen people to play indoor tennis for hours at a time. The wooden court is dying in all the spots where the nets are placed, just doesn't seem very rational but maybe the Y knows something that I don't.
Thank you for your review, Jay! We value hearing feedback from our members and guests and hearing how we can improve the Y experience. We are currently working on how to best renovate our spaces after we moved our mind-body programming from the former Yoga Studio (crescent room) to the Mind-Body Studio, and your comment for our is noted for the future.
Fantastic experience: Great place for workout and swim. Come here almost everyday with my family.
Thank you for your five-star review, Wenchang! We are happy to have you and your family as part of our Y community!
Fantastic experience: Great Y for a workout! But there are a few things I would change in the gym. I would add at least one more pulldown machine, another dedicated barbell bench press, deadlift platforms for each squat rack so you could have people squatting and deadlifting at the same time, and round weight plays instead of dodecagon ones. None of these issues prevent one from having a really good weightlifting session, but they will contribute to people being able to go in and out of the weight area more efficiently.
Thank you so much for your five-star review, Matt! Your feedback is appreciated as well. We are passing on your suggestions to our directors, as we value our Y members' input. Thanks again for being part of our community!
Positive experience: The facility is neat and clean, and the equipments are high quality brands. However, the opening hours are short and also there were many days that they were closed, or closed earlier than the regular hours. After 1 year of experience, I decided to move to another gym that opens 24/7.
Hi JK, thank you for your review and your feedback! We are sorry to see you go, but we appreciate you sharing your experience. We take these comments seriously, as we strive to provide a clean environment and adjust our hours when we have the staff capacity to do so.
Fantastic experience: I have attended this YMCA for more than a decade and it just feels like home to me. I've tried to work out at other gyms like PF but I always come back to this Y. Theres people of all ages, sizes and abilities and I have never felt judged like I have in other gyms. Most gyms don't allow children but I can bring my kiddo to play basketball or walk around the track while I work out. The biggest plus is the swimming pool. I'm an avid swimmer and having the option to either do lap lanes or recreational swimming is the best feature of this gym. It is my favorite in town.
Hi Kristina! Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We strive to offer a healthy, accepting environment for all, and we are so glad we can be a part of your routine. Thanks again for being a part of our Y community!
Fantastic experience: My mom works here, i love this place! Everybodys so nice!
Fantastic experience: My mom works here, i love this place! Everybodys so nice!
Thank you for your five-star review, Val! We're glad to hear you have a welcoming experience when you're at the Y. Thanks to you and your mom for being a part of the Y community!
Negative experience: The restricted pool hours and early closing time is not worth the cost of membership
Hi Tina, we hope we'll be able to adjust our pool and facility hours once we're in a staffing and financial position to do so. Thanks for your patience during this challenging time!
Fantastic experience: It's a great place for a workout.
Thank you for your review, James! We're grateful to have you as part of our Y community!
Negative experience: Rudest staffed gym I have ever been to
Hi Kevin, we strive to ensure our staff is welcoming to all members, so we would like to speak to you about your interactions so we can address any issues immediately. Can you please send us your preferred contact information to [email protected], and we will get you connected to our Membership Director. Thank you!
Positive experience: When are you going back to normal hours again this opening late and closing early is for the birds can we get back on track already
Hi Dan, we regularly monitor facility usage and our hours. Since COVID-19 is ongoing, we don't know when our facility hours might be adjusted at this time. We will certainly announce any changes to our Y members via email, on social media, here, and more. Thank you for your continued patience!
Fantastic experience: You can do your work out at your on pace on multiple equipment
Negative experience: This is the only YMCA that I have ever heard of where you have to pay to attend a yoga class. They won't tell you this directly if you call to ask about their classes, so if you have a Y membership and just show up expecting to attend a yoga class, you are asked to pay up for a full eight classes. I got there early, no one at the front desk or even the instructor mentioned that the class required an additional charge. I was terribly embarrassed once a lady with a clipboard came in as the class was about to start and she only looked at me bluntly said "who are you?" With everyone else starting at me, like I was some trespasser. Furthermore, if you aren't a skinny middle-aged woman you can't expect to fit in. Even before the who "pay up" incident, I noticed that everyone there knew each other and had no interest in acknowledging me, like a social cliche.
Negative experience: horrible ymca and is terribly ran. worst ymca i’ve ever been to
Hi Brayton,
We have to work together to ensure our Y maintains a healthy environment, which is why we've implemented our health and safety policies. We understand that while not everyone will agree with these decisions, it is essential to follow what the CDC and our local health department suggest in order to remain safe and open for our staff and members. If you have any questions or concerns about our policies, please contact us at (812) 332-5555 or [email protected]. We are happy to connect with you directly to address any additional feedback regarding your experience at our Y. Thank you!
Positive experience: I've been a member for 3 years. Overall the Y provides a very good facility at a very reasonable price. Staff are friendly and helpful. The physical facility is well maintained and kept clean. One criticism is the cell phone policy. Cell phone use in the locker rooms is banned for no credible reason. Meanwhile cell phone abuse in the exercise areas is rampant. People routine sit on exercise equipment while totally immersed in texting. There are signs up reminding members to be courteous and allow others to work in between sets. Many members routinely ignore this admonition (while testing) and are quite annoyed when I ask to work in. The Y needs to reconsider the cell phone policy and emphasize the point about not using exercise equipment as furniture while texting. I could care less if someone wants to use their cell phone in the locker room but am really tired of people hogging exercise equipment while totally immersed in text messaging.
Hi Dennis, thank you for your review! Cell phones are not permitted in our locker rooms since there are several nude adults and children. Our no cell phone policy in the locker rooms is for the safety and privacy of our members. Please alert a Wellness Coach if you see continued issues with members not allowing others to work in between sets. They will help enforce the policy. Hope this clarifies our policies!
Positive experience: I've been a member since 1990. I'm physically disabled to J.r.a. I now attend the arthritis aquatics classes and enjoy the routines as well as the socialization and encouragement by and with others. And the instructors are vtruly concerned.if our well being and knowledgeable on arthritis. If not for the membership aid program I could no afford to be a member at all. This would be detrimental to my health to the y is the only fitness facility with indoor pools available for the general public. However, to unwanted divorce two years ago (after over 20 years together) I'm now on my own do of poverty level income. In Bloomington this is very hard. To I receive medicaire (for my primary health insurance) I can go to places that participate in silver sneakers. However, the Monroe county y does not. The membership aid also is increasing to cost of living overall. It would greatly help me to be able to use my silver sneakers membership. Twin lakes accepts it but has no pool. I can only do aquatics fitness now to recent total knee replacement. I am considering checking out the Spencer y to takes silver sneakers but I've been going to the s.e. one so long I feel like it is a second home and the people I've met in the arthritis aquatics classes are like family. So I do not want to leave this y. Please, seriously consider adding silver sneakers to your membership for people in situations as I. Thx. Much. Hope you have a good Christmas
Hi Rebekah, thank you for your review! We've shared your thoughts about Silver Sneakers with our Membership Director. We're glad you've been a part of the Monroe County Y family for so long. Thank you again!
Negative experience: Not accepting Silver sneakers members not fair they accept in Indianapolis and surrounding YMCA
Hi Hemendra, while we don't accept Silver Sneakers, we do accept various health insurance reimbursement programs. Indianapolis YMCAs are separate associations, which means they have separate policies than the Monroe County Y branches. If you have any questions about the programs we are able accept, please contact our Membership Director, Kevin Vail, at [email protected] or (812) 961-2362. Thank you!
Negative experience: I dunno why Bloomington is so proud. The full membership in my hometown is $37 plus 10% off for military with the joiner fee waived. For Spencer and Martinsville it's $50 for TWO adults!
Hi Melissa, we're sorry you're not happy with our membership rates. They are different to Spencer and Martinsville rates due to the variety of amenities and programs offered at each branch, plus one fee for the Monroe County Y gives you access to both our Southeast and Northwest Y branches here in Bloomington. We offer Financial Assistance for families and individuals who need support with the fees. We accept applications every year November 1-30 for the following calendar year memberships. And, we also offer military memberships to eligible active duty military personnel and their families. You can find more information here: https://www.monroecountyymca.org/military. We hope this helps, and please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly if you have additional concerns or questions. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Wife array of classes and great facility!
Positive experience: First day of Y camp and counselors are late! No sign in sheets either!!
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and we're very helpful
Thank you for your kind review, Alex!
Fantastic experience: Great place.
Fantastic experience: Considering the population it serves, this YMCA does a fantastic job of offering good facilities and programs for the local populace at a very affordable price. The availability of short time childcare is a much needed boon for parents too.
Thank you for your review, Ashton! We're glad you're part of our Y community.
Positive experience: Nice Place To Go The only thing that can improve the pool and make it fun is by adding waterslides to the pool and i use to be in the y family
Negative experience: Too much money and too crowded to lift weights
Fantastic experience: Great YMCA
Fantastic experience: Great Y - I love it here. They also have excellent yoga classes/teachers.
Hi Linda! Thank you for the 5-star review, it means a lot to us! We love having you as part of our Y family.
Positive experience: great programme
Thanks for the nice review, Jalin!
Positive experience: Somewhat expensive
Fantastic experience: I have really enjoyed my experience visiting the Bloomington Southeast YMCA. We have been members for quite some time, although we suspended our membership for a couple of years. The facilities are very well-maintained and with god equipment. Our interaction with the staff has been very positive and they are particularly good in organizing some special events like runs and breakfast with Santa. The pool area is very nice, including the area for small kids to play. I also really like their camps, which have many offerings.
Negative experience: sad place
We’re sorry you did not have a good experience at our facility. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected] if there is a specific issue we can help resolve. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Nice gym
Positive experience: Keep those basketball nets fresh and the rims at 10 feet and I'll give you another star.
Positive experience: Family oriented. Energy true that the state of mind and family members can be found in.
Fantastic experience: Feels like family. Best running group.
Negative experience: The worst place in Bloomington .. They don't respect customers and lie a lot .. I don't trust them .. I think they lose a lot of their customers daily
Fantastic experience: Great family centered fitness center. Excellent programs for seniors, also. Good pool, track, spinning, weight room, exercise machines.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, superior program and facilities.
Negative experience: The worst experience ive had at ymca. I have visited many ymca facitlities and this is my absolute least favorite. I went there this morning for the first and last time. There was many bad things but the absolute nastiest thing was their towels smelled like pee. I dont mean a little. They smelled like they were sitting in a bucket of pee before they folded them and handed them out. Will never ever go to this ymca again. Best of luck to anyone who does.
Positive experience: Great plave and a lot to do.. very crowded though.
Fantastic experience: Amazing love it!! The staff is great and also it's a great place to achieve goals!
Fantastic experience: The membership cost is really low compared to all the benefits that includes. There are many group classes all day and people are really friendly!
Fantastic experience: I love the Y.
Fantastic experience: Been a member for 18 years. ...always satisfied. Clean, well.maintained, friendly staff and great administration.
Fantastic experience: Terrific staff and facility- kid friendly
Positive experience: The membership fees seem a bit steep, but there aren't many other alternatives for non-students.
Negative experience: The basketball gym is nice. The weight rooms and track is nice. But please do something bout the bathroom. They smell like urine the smell is extremely awfull. No excuse for the Y to be like this. I've been to over 14 Y's in 3 states and never seen one like this. But I'll just go to the other one near ivy tech they also have great privacy (shower rooms)
Fantastic experience: I have been going to the YMCA since I was a kid. They have great summer camps, I made tons of new friends. Pool is so fun and I love to be able to run on the track outside when it's a nice day, or when it's raining run inside
Positive experience: Great for kids and families. Weight room is small. Cardio is always crowded. I belong because it is the only place in town with racquetball other than IU and the courts are old and dirty and hard to get time on at peak hours. But like I said, great for kids. The new pool, especially.
Fantastic experience: I figured I'd write a review about my positive experience here over the last few months to help offset some of the negative remarks. I'm a new member here (but not new to gyms) and this facility has a lot to offer. The free-weight room has more than enough equipment for the number of people I see in there. I usually go after 8pm. The machine room has a nice variety of cardio stations as well as a whole range of pulley machines for every muscle group. There is a nice indoor running track, basketball courts, racquetball, 2 hot tubs, 2 pools, 2 levels of locker rooms and showers, and all kinds of specialty classes. The staff is great and friendly. I'm not sure if there was an issue with cleanliness in the past, but I see two people cleaning machines and vacuuming every time I go there. There are two negatives that come to mind. The towels are tiny and not soft at all. They actually scratch your skin. Also, at least one of the pools or hot tubs seem to be closed for maintenance every time I'm there. But usually they are up and running shortly after. Overall, I highly recommend this YMCA. It's a great deal for the money and a positive environment.
Fantastic experience: Dedicated staff, awesome members, great classes. Boot Camp has really helped me get in shape and improve my 5K time.
Positive experience: Facility in good setting has great potential. I've been a member for over twenty years and unfortunately this (SE) location has been poorly maintained, has gross locker rooms, and has an overall unkempt appearance. Free weight room is small and overcrowded with the equipment not properly spaced. Nice new pool area. Caters primarily to family and unemployed day crowd. Slipping but recoverable.
Fantastic experience: Do not listen to these old reviews!! I've been coming to this YMCA since I was 6 (I am now almost 23) and I love it there. Staff is very friendly and inviting - even at 5:30 in the morning! They have recently upgraded almost all of their equipment and workout rooms. They offer a variety of classes and provide a great family environment. I have always enjoyed the time I've spent at the Y, and look forward to coming back for many more years to come.
Negative experience: NOT CLEANED PROPERLY. The worst of all possible gym crimes. The locker rooms are actually scary--the smell of urine in the toilet area is beyond belief. The cleaning staff doesn't seem to be aware that you have to clean under equipment, wipe down 100% of the surfaces (not just the handles), get a scrub brush behind door partitions in the restrooms, etc. The whole place should be shut down for a week of intensive blasting with high pressure steam and bleach. The equipment is decent, not fancy but adequate, but the (lack of) cleanliness is not acceptable. Also, they have a sign up for equipment with a 30 minute limit, but they don't enforce it. What's the point? If I want to use a machine for an hour, I'll just put down another name after mine. This is a (nonfunctional) stop-gap to prevent them from having to do what really needs to be done--EXPANSION of the cardio area. Space-wise, vast open areas are dedicated to basketball, an indoor track, and childcare while the main workout areas are undersized and poorly ventilated. They really need to shut this place down, sterilize it, and get a professional layout to get this gym up to modern standards. The challenge seems to be that they try to serve too many masters--there are hundreds of little children running around all the time. While I understand the family concept, this facility is sorely lacking in adult-only spaces. Sure, they have areas that are marked "adults only" in the workout room--but the parents and kids don't obey them, and the area overlaps with the gymnastics room for children, so there are always kids back there. As far as the locker rooms, marking the upstairs as "adults only" would seem to be a big step... but there are no walls to the upstairs area, so the kid noise is still constant! This does NOT make for a relaxing experience. I like my gyms well equiped, well ventilated, relaxing and CLEAN, and would be more than willing to pay a premium membership fee to find that. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any gyms meeting those standards in Bloomington.
