Upper Limits Climbing Gym

Fantastic experience: Took our kids (ages 6 and 3) today. Both enjoyed it. Absolutely perfect way to learn how to explore and climb safely. The staff were extremely helpful and the facility was super clean. We are excited to come back soon.

Fantastic experience: This is the second time that my Scout Troop have been to Upper Limits. It was a great experience both times. The boys really enjoyed themselves. There are climbing challenges there that are fun for the first timers and harder challenges for those that came for a second time. The staff was very attentive to getting the boys into their climbing gear and then throughout our visit.

Fantastic experience: Awesome space to climb! The staff was super friendly, walked us through orientation, and even offered to belay me and my daughter. My daughter had an absolute blast! Shout out to Andy who not only belayed my daughter (8 years old) but engaged with her in a kid friendly and kind way. Great space! Definitely recommend :)

Fantastic experience: I was hesitant at first but it ended up being sooooo much fun. The staff (Chris and Sophie (and everyone else)) were very patient with our large group that was mainly new climbers. Everyone was super friendly and helpful! Again I was nervous especially since I've never rock climbed and I'm scared of heights, but it was sooooo much fun!

Fantastic experience: We recently held my son’s 9th birthday party here. The assigned staff did great with our group of 7-9 year olds. We visited several rooms during the party for climbing and then used the party room for pizza and cupcakes. The party came with the pizza, plates, goody bags (good ones!) and a t shirt for the birthday kid.

Fantastic experience: I recently led a boy scout group there for the merit badge course. The staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. It took all day, but the instructors kept the boys engaged in addition to being super patient.

Positive experience: I’ve been to upper limits twice so far. I am new to the area and went by myself the first time. I was a little disappointed because I was expecting there to be more auto belays (the gym I am used to has 15) I believe there are 5 or 6 here. The second time I went, I took a top rope 101 class that was very talk heavy which I wasn’t expecting. We only climbed during the testing portion of the class. I got certified with my friend and we are both looking forward to exploring the different routes here. It appears to be worth it if you have a climbing partner. Not so much if you’re going solo and wanting to stick to the auto belays.

Fantastic experience: We've done summer camp and spring break camp with Upper Limits and our kiddos have had a blast at both. I haven't met any staff members who aren't courteous and respectful.

Fantastic experience: Troop 60 from Geneva, IL participated in the Upper Limits merit badge program on a Saturday. All the scouts had a great time. Carter and Isaiah were fantastic. We will definitely put Upper Limits into our rotation for activities.

Fantastic experience: We recently did a birthday party here and it was great! The orientation part was a bit slow (lots of excited kiddos), but once they started climbing, they had a blast! The host (Justin) was very patient with the group and seemed to enjoy being the party host. There were several auto belay climbs so the kids didn’t have to wait in line for long once we got going. Party room is on the small side for 15 kids (More of an FYI for those possibly having parents or siblings stay that there’s not much extra room aside from the guests). Very reasonable cost for 15 kids. They even included a goody bag for each kid! I heard several say they want to come back sometime

Fantastic experience: I wanted to do something different with my 4 boys today and brought them to Upper Limits. The staff was very knowledgeable and showed us around and got us geared up. The prices was reasonable and there was no one rushing you to finish your climb. I was glad to see my boys going out of their comfort zone and challenging them selves to go higher. Definitely will be going back.

The kids all had a blast & it was awesome to see them come out of their comfort zone and get more adventurous with their climbing. Will definitely visit again with my little thrill-seeker!

Fantastic experience: My son participated in the half-day climbing class and had the absolute best experience! The camp leaders were knowledgeable and supportive and he learned so much. We will be back very soon!

Fantastic experience: My husband and I just did the Top Rope 101 class and got belay certified. It was so fun and Carter, our instructor, was wonderful! He explained everything very well and made sure we understood everything before moving on. The rest of the staff were also very helpful after the class when we were climbing on our own and had some questions. The routes were fun and had awesome names! 150 year old Lobster was my favorite!

Fantastic experience: I took the Lead 101 class and had a great time. The teachers were very helpful and and I learned a lot, plus I got to do some climbing before and after. This is a truly unique gym, built inside of multiple connected grain silos, with some very tall routes (including one extra long auto belay). The focus is primarily on roped climbing, so if you want to boulder then you should probably head to the bouldering gym. They had 6 auto belays set up when I visited, mostly with easy routes (hardest was 5.10b), and with my class that was just the right amount of climbing for me.

Fantastic experience: We had the PORTABLE CLIMBING WALL come out to our elementary school field day and it was a HUGE success, in large part due to the outstanding staff from Upper Limits that came out to support it! I highly recommend the portable climbing for any of your outdoor school celebrations!

Fantastic experience: I last climbed this gym in 1996 with my Boy Scout Troop. I just brought my own Scouts for the first time this weekend (2023), and they had a blast. Almost all of them earned the merit badge, and our adults were impressed with the trip. The staff did a fantastic job. 10/10 will return again.

Fantastic experience: I had a great experience with this class. Instructor Chris and his assistant Katie did an outstanding job at providing the course information and answered all my questions. They were patient, encouraging, safety conscious, and very professional. I would definitely recommend learning to climb at this gym.

Fantastic experience: On MLK day I took BSA Tr 36 to Upper Limits for an afternoon of climbing. Our annual trip to Upper Limits is a much anticipated event for the troop. And the troop had a great time. But equally importantly, I am a nearing 64 yo long time rock climber. I measure my well being by my ability to climb "Baby Poop" the iconic route at Upper Limits. I managed another successful trip up Baby Poop. It will be a good year for me. As ever, I maintain the Baby Poop is not a 5.9 route. It s much harder. Yesterday, a UL employee told me that he rates Baby Poop a 5.11(b). I will go with that.

Fantastic experience: We had a birthday party at a Upper Limits in Bloomington. 9 kids had a blast. We got the extra half hr in the party room, which we needed. It was affordable and cool in the hot weather. The kids were all so brave and the staff were kind especially Teddy. Thanks for hosting us. Ill be back with my scouts soon!

Positive experience: I wouldn’t come here to boulder: hardly any routes.. there aren’t a lot of auto belays available for solo climbers. The silos are awesome! Really tall routes. Most of the difficult routes are designated for lead climbing which was a bummer, highest top rope was a 12a and not on auto belay. -2 stars is because staff didn’t seem very knowledgeable or even friendly for that matter… forgot to give us a belay test (within 15 min of arrival) so my partner wasn’t even allowed to belay me :| I paid 18$ to climb three auto belay routes.

Fantastic experience: This climbing gym is so cool! The silo climbs definitely test your endurance with their height which is definitely a nice change of pace. I took their lead climbing class and it was really informative. Lead climbing has definitely been something that I was afraid of doing and the class really helped me face that fear and definitely gave me the knowledge to feel much more comfortable with both lead belaying and lead climbing.

Fantastic experience: Upper Limits was great. We had 9 Boy Scouts come. They taught 6 young scouts their climbing merit badge and did an amazing job with the boys. Would recommend and will be back!

Fantastic experience: I attended a Rock 101 Class on 2/20. It was a great time and the instructor was great. He was very knowledgeable. I've been climbing at the gym for a little while now but haven't taken a class before this one. If you want to learn more about climbing and belaying I highly recommend checking out some classes or climbing for fun with their auto belays! Ps The staff has was super helpful when I was picking out my own climbing gear too.

Positive experience: Very cool gym with a wide variety of sport-climbing routes, and some neat bouldering. The silos are very unique and awesome, there's also lots of overhangs in the main area, a sick wave-wall with a roof that makes for some very interesting climbing, and a 100 foot vertical wall on the outside. In terms of the facilities, this is my favorite climbing gym. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 starts is because of the staff. They can be very overbearing and even condescending at times. I get that even experienced climbers can make mistakes, but it's really obnoxious to have the staff as back-seat drivers anytime that you're trying to do anything. Like, I'm paying to use your facilities and have a good time with my friends, give us some space to breathe. And PLEASE stop shouting beta at me if I haven't asked you, for me, most of the fun is figuring stuff out by myself...

Positive experience: Lovely place with friendly staff and good variety of routes, -1 star for complete lack of staff masking. No patrons were wearing any when we arrived either. Bit of a surprise since staff were masked at their Maryland Heights location in StL a few weeks ago, and more than half of patrons. Take it off when you're in the silo 20+ feet above everyone else if you'd like, but the belayers are all in pretty close proximity to each other down at the bottom.

Negative experience: Not a clean environment, outdated facility, ownership seems to invest money solely in their newer facilities in ST Louis while they left Bloomington in the dust

Fantastic experience: The climbing gym has lots of options like a 110 ft outdoor wall, a few silos and plenty of bouldering options. What it lacks are autobelay walls. There was essentially only one spot since you cannot use the other three that were functional while others are climbing in the adjacent bouldering/lead climbing wall. If you're planning to top rope then I suggest doing the top-rope 101 class so you can belay and have more options for climbing. If not, the outdoor bouldering was a lot of fun and there is plenty to do as long as the weather is nice.

Fantastic experience: We took our Boy scouts to Upper Limits for the Climbing Merit badge. The whole outing was fantastic. The facilities and staff were great. Our Scouts learned a lot and had a great time.

Fantastic experience: Update: this gym is always will be the favorite of my upper limits gyms. I have now been to every gym in St Louis and always make time to go to this gym. With out a doubt, no matter how long I always see a familiar face and the staff are always kind and courteous. I can never hype the community that this gym can provide. Original: Love this gym, the staff are fantastic, they are knowledgeable and helpful. I have been to many climbing gyms and the community at upper limits is the best I've found. everyone at the gym is very supportive of other climbers. The climbs are very well rounded for experienced and new climbers the building is definitely the most unique I've ever been to! The silos and the wave wall are second to none and I always look forward to spending a day here! Check out the outdoor boulder during the warm months, I can't stop recommending everyone check this place out!

Fantastic experience: My son completed the 5-day adventure camp (half-day). He had so much fun! The camp “counselors” were so great with the kids and had as much energy as they did. They activities were varied, both with the climbing and during non-climbing portions of the morning. We are looking forward to signing up again in the future!

Fantastic experience: I took the Rock Wall 101 class with Allie. Apparently it was her first time teaching the course, but there was no way of knowing. She was SO professional while being SO warm and welcoming. Allie taught me the basic necessities, while sharing tips and tricks of a professional. She was extremely patient and made sure I was comfortable and confident with everything she was teaching me. It completely relieved the pressure I was feeling coming in. This was such a great experience for me and I would recommend any aspiring climber to take this course with Allie!

Fantastic experience: I had an excellent experience at Upper Limits. I signed up for a class, and in addition to the instructions in the initial confirmation e-mail, I was called the night before to remind me to arrive early. The class was great, the instructor Caesar explained things clearly and was very helpful for me as a complete beginner. I love the variety of activities available, as I was able to try climbing with both an auto-belay and a partner-belay on the top ropes, and also got the chance to try bouldering both inside and outdoors. This facility was large and has a lot of climbing courses for all levels. I will definitely be coming back!

Fantastic experience: Both of my boys attended the Upper Limits summer camp for the 3rd year in row. It is their absolute favorite camp each summer. The staff is welcoming, engaged, and they create a fun, busy, and safe environment for kids and teenagers.

Fantastic experience: My son went to the summer climbing camp and had a blast. He gained confidence and improved his climbing skills.

Negative experience: Very disappointed. Required to wear a mask the whole time in a hot grain silo. $20 for my four-year-old grandson who could hardly reach any climbing pegs. One of the employees was very argumentative. We won't be back.

Fantastic experience: Staff if extremely knowledgable and friendly. The Gym is in amazing condition and is extremely unique. You're able to climb straight up old Silos that have been converted to rock walls. AMAZING!

Fantastic experience: We came with 12 boy scouts for the Climbing merit badge class. The entire staff was very knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. They did an excellent job teaching our scouts about climbing, belaying, and how to be safe so everyone has fun. It was a great experience and the facilities are awesome and easy to get to.

Fantastic experience: Our Boy Scouts troop had an excellent experience at Upper Limits earning the climbing merit badge as well as enjoying the facility during the balance of our stay! The staff was wonderful, especially Lisa, Abby, Evan, and Robyn! Our group prepared ahead of time, studying knots and climbing information, and the instructors built on that and greatly expanded our knowledge skill in helping each boy achieve the merit badge. We hope to return on future excursions!

Fantastic experience: My 9 and 7 year old boys loved this camp so much that they spent nearly an entire week of winter break mastering their rock climbing skills. The staff were incredibly friendly and interactive with the climbing group, and knew my boys by name as soon as they walked in the door on day 2! Great experience. Highly recommend!!

Negative experience: The facility is very good but not all staff is helpful. I took my son here to do "Boys Scout Climbing Merit Badge" last Saturday. Most of the staff who conducted the merit badge were helpful to the kids who have not done climbing at all before. But some (specially one female instructor) did not understand the fact that these kids were doing this merit badge to find out if they like climbing or not. Rather than trying to ignite a love for climbing, these instructors were quite strict on testing ability. If you are going to keep offering this merit badge, please review BSA merit badge objectives. Your job as merit badge instructors is to ignite a passion for climbing, not making sure they master the climbing skills on the very first day they try out climbing.

Positive experience: I brought 6 boy scouts that wanted to earn the climbing merit badge. The instructors were very patient with the boys and the facility is a great place to learn. It is not only good for beginners, there are also a variety of climbs for very advanced climbers. When I signed up for the merit badge class I was told to arrive by 9:30 am so they could get all the paper work done and get fitted for equipment before the 10:00 am class started, but no employees showed up until a few minutes after 10.

Fantastic experience: Upper Limits Rocks! It has quickly climbed to the top of my list of favorite things to do! There is so much variety here and it’s really easy for new climbers to get integrated into the sport. The classes are super easy and helpful. Ben helped us get our waivers in order, answered all our questions, and even demonstrated how the auto-belay works when I was intimidated to trust it to catch me. I had a blast and I would certainly go back. For those who have read to the bottom, you are rewarded with knowledge of Groupon opportunities. I went for super cheap. Check it regularly and you can, too.

Fantastic experience: I've been climbing here for just about a year now, and just now getting around to leaving a review. This place is phenomenal! The staff is nice, knowledgeable and friendly. Same with all the members. It's an incredibly unique facility, which means lots of different options ranging from beginner to advanced. They do a good job keeping things fresh which means every week there's usually new things to look forward to. For anyone questioning if they're strong enough, if it's worth it to try once, etc. It most definitely is worth coming and this is the place to go. I would 100% recommend upper limits Bloomington to anyone and everyone.

Fantastic experience: We have been coming to upper Limits for 5 years as a family. We now have a 14 and 11 year old along with my husband and I. We started our kids young and they love climbing! We love the unique climbing experience in the 60 foot silos with numerous top rope routes, lead climbing routes, auto belay routes, bouldering walls indoor and outdoors, and the always helpful and friendly staff! It has been a great place to workout and stay in shape for the outdoor climbing that we do. We recently took a lead climbing class ( myself, my husband, and 14 year old son) our daughter was too young. We had a great instructor who showed us how to safely belay, clip in, check the rope and our equipment and each other. The most exciting and kind of nerve wracking part of our class was when we had to take practice falls! We had to practice safely belaying during a fall and also falling ourselves over 15 feet to learn how to safely fall. I’ve never free fallen that far and it kinda rattled me, and I’ve done a lot of climbing! But it was great to learn and we were all so glad we did it! Our instructor was very thorough and knowledgeable. The staff at Upper Limits is always helpful and awesome! If you’re looking to start climbing or if you’re already a climber this place is a must see, they have something for everyone!

Positive experience: Great place for an afternoon. Fun workout, just wish there were more options for auto belay that weren't as close to each other. If they had an addition in the future that would be sweet.
