Steel Fitness Riverport: Opinions

Negative experience: >Original Review (December 2022): ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ > The gym had an agreement with my health insurance that covered my membership. Because I wasn't paying at the time, I was able to overlook all the issues others have complained about. Once they canceled the program abruptly with no notice, I had to leave the gym. The old manager at the time was pushing pricey 1 or 2 year memberships that were overpriced for this location. I joined this gym only for the Les Mills classes offered. Body Pump and RPM are my favorite. Corinne is a great Body Pump instructor! The room was small, just enough equipment, not too much extra. It was kinda cramped with less than 15 in the class. But everyone pitched in to make sure there was room for newbies and we had help getting set up and feeling comfortable. > Updated Review (March 2025): ⭐️⭐️ > While I'm glad to see the gym is under new management, as many have mentioned, Michael's handling of member relations was problematic. Unfortunately, I ended up purchasing a new membership during his departure. My experience since then has significantly deteriorated, hence the drop in my rating. My primary issue stems from receiving a parking ticket despite having paid for a "lifetime" parking permit through the gym. The gym was unable to effectively assist me in resolving this issue. After numerous follow-ups, a new parking permit was finally issued. However, I am now left with the choice of paying the unwarranted ticket or contesting it with the magistrate. While some of my frustration is directed at the parking authority (BPA), the gym handled the registration of my permit and should have ensured its validity. I should not be burdened with resolving a problem that originated from their administrative oversight. The Les Mills classes, particularly Body Pump with Corinne, remain a highlight, but the parking debacle has overshadowed any positive aspects of my membership.
Negative experience: Filthy gym and rude “management”. I don’t think this place, its machines or locker room, have EVER been cleaned. You can see an inch of dust on each treadmill. They also randomly close during regular business hours. This gym is 3 minutes from home and we still prefer the 30 minute drive to the Allentown location. Avoid at all costs
Negative experience: Read my review of Steel Fitness in Allentown, PA, owned by Thomas Fenstermacher, who also owns this location!!!!!!!!!!!! If management knew better they would do better! Don't fall for these recent 5 star reviews. Either they sold their souls for something or the reviews are fake. Click on their profile and you'll see this location is the only place they commented on. Y'all gotta do better to bring that 3.4 star review up. You're in the same alley as Planet Fitness and Maxx Fitness. Premier? Tuhh!
Negative experience: Terrible manager equipment is not in a good condition. I try to cancel my membership they said I need to there and I did they didn’t give my money back and kept charging me I had to call my credit card and cancel. If I had read the reviews I would never sign up for the membership.
Negative experience: Terrible service from the front desk representative .Don’t know his name but he is rude. I will not join that gym. Ever! The cooperate department should investigate that location. Just another case of an employee destroying a business. He has a habit of hanging up on potential clients.
Negative experience: I advise you at all costs to not join this gym. The equipment has deteriorated exponentially. When you eventually cancel your membership the management will not give you a receipt and charge your account indefinitely. When you call to cancel again and again, you will be met with excuses. Every positive review on here is self-written or due to the management incessantly asking their members to write good reviews. Save yourself the time and trouble and don't join.
Negative experience: This gym is nothing but a scam operation designed to steal your money. They charged my credit card without authorization, ignored my cancellation requests that i did three years ago. The staff is rude, specially, their manager, Michael completely unhelpful, and will give you the runaround instead of actually fixing the issue. The facility itself? Filthy. The equipment is outdated and barely functional, the bathrooms are disgusting, and good luck finding a machine that isn’t either broken or covered in someone else’s sweat. The management clearly doesn’t care about their members—only about squeezing every last dollar out of them. DO NOT sign up here unless you enjoy being scammed, overcharged, and treated like garbage. There are plenty of better gyms that won’t rob you blind. Avoid this place at all costs!
Negative experience: If I could give 0 I would , I’m a personal trainer trying to scope out new gyms in the valley for myself and my Cliants . Just filled out a free day pass out on website , get a call . First thing he asks if I’m looking for a membership I tell him not until I try out the gym . I’m picky , I need to feel the vibe out and see if it fits for my needs . He blatantly says have a good day , proceeds to hang up . How unprofessional can you get , honestly !! Extremely disrespectful!!!! Don’t go there !!! Find a better place for beginners Because they appreciate don’t want people coming in !!!
Hi Julia, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are now under new management and would love for you to come check out the location with a free day pass. Ask for Heidi at the front desk, she will be happy to show you the space and let you get a great work out in!
Negative experience: Too expensive! Im sure there are better alternatives in the area!
Negative experience: Manager, Michael, is VERY lacking in conflict resolution. Initially had called to sign up through Active Fit and was boldly told that they no longer work with them. I continued to speak nicely and asked what their monthly membership is. I was told that it's 60 per month for the first 3 months then is 30 per month thereafter. Well, once 3 months had passed, I still got charged the 60. I had called to inquire the difference in monthly cost vs what he had informed me upon sign up, when he then he began hollering at me saying he doesnt know who told me that. I replied that I hadn't made it up where he then became extra angry, saying he didn't say I made it up and that if I would LISTEN to him, I would know he said, "I don't know where you got that from." When I asked why so emotional, he became more emotional then hung up on me. (I think the last time someone hung up the phone on me in anger, I was probably 12.) I tried calling back as my goal was to inquire the directions for cancelling membership. He then picked up and hung up. Very immature and unprofessional behavior. Not sure if there is some past unresolved control and aggression issues going on or what, but this place is too costly to have a manager of such low caliber running the show. Also, classic game of bate n switch. I never even signed a contract. Update 1217: I never received a call from Jonathan per the reply in this review. I called the sister site, Steel Fitness Premier, and left messages on 11/11, 11/12, 11/14, 11/19. NO RESPONSE. Since I never signed a contract at Steel Fitness Riverport, nor received one, nor had I gotten a tour, nor had I ever ONCE used the facility. (I only used the door the very same day that I signed up because I needed a parking pass. So I used my fob to come right back in the door - no further.) Since, I was getting ZERO reply to my multiple messages, I was forced to resort to changing my card. So, what happens next? I get a Twin Oaks Third Party Billing notice wanting now $70 dollars on behalf of Steel Fitness. My mind is blown. Update on 1/27/25 - They are still trying to bill me. No one has ever returned my calls, nor has this "Jonathan" mentioned below ever called me. They should be embarrassed.
Hi Victoria Sorry to hear this. I will speak to him and have Jonathan reach out to you. Thanks Tom
Negative experience: Just called to ask if they participate in insurance programs that pay for the gym membership. After being informed that they do not, I was asked if I still like to join, given they are in their promotional window. I politely said sorry I'm not interested as the I pay $40 a month for the insurance program which gives me access to a bunch of gyms in the area. The staff member immediately got rude and said "yeah okay" and hung up the phone on me. Based solely on that experience I have no intention on joining this gym in the future. Also, based on other reviews, this seems to be consistent. Advice to company: 1.) Improve your enrollment requirements and allow of insurance programs. 2.) Improve your hiring process...
Negative experience: Even after you call multiple times to cancel they won’t and continue to bill you. Even after you show up in person to cancel and fill out their paperwork to cancel they’ll continue billing you. Avoid at all costs and put a stop payment on your bank if you find yourself in this situation. Management will never get back to you. Your best course of action is to use any other gym in the area that doesn’t engage in this type of predatory behavior.
Fantastic experience: Friendly and caring management. Mike always asking what he can do to make things better. I don't think he ever goes home. Very hands on and available.
Negative experience: First of all I will echo everyone else, this gym is overpriced, it is dirty, the water fountains and air conditioning are constantly malfunctioning. There are so many better and cleaner gyms for similar or cheaper prices. Also they only let me cancel in person instead of over the phone, like why cant you just email me the form and I'll sign it like every other gym? Litterally nobody in this gym cleans up after themselves or wipes down weights or machines. The machines and benches look like they were salvaged from a scrap yard.
Negative experience: Only join this gym if you plan on never cancelling from here, it is nearly impossible. Ive been getting charged months after I graduated from school even though I talked with them in April and told them to not renew my membership when it expired in August, which they suggested. I had to put a stop payment on my credit card to get them to finally stop charging me, and the stupid general manager is never available to talk to. He’s in the gym once a week and would never return my calls, never pick up the phone even when I heard from other employees that he was in person, and would always leave hours early so I couldn’t get in touch with him over the phone. I feel like I’m ripping my fingernails out when I think of steel fitness; I think I’ve started to get gray hair from the two months it took to cancel from here and various dispute letters to their billing company and phone calls and credit card work. Save yourself the headache and don’t even enroll.
Positive experience: Personable staff behind the desk, group classes are great, and the size of the gym is just right. 3 star rating simply cause the cost is a little high and some of the machines feel dated.
Negative experience: They have old machines and not clean there. Sauna need attention and be cleaning up for sure.
Negative experience: If I could give zero stars I would. I joined this gym at the beginning of the year and worked out here for a few months, and I have to say, my experience was horrible!! The gym itself is a decent size and has the potential to be great, but unfortunately, it’s plagued by several issues and it sucks! First, the equipment is often broken and stays that way for months. The gym is also not very clean—I’ve never seen anyone clean the sauna, which raises serious health concerns. You could workout at 5am or just before closing. Still smells horrible. You could place a rag in there on Monday and still see it Friday. Additionally, the gym is poorly organized. At $60 a month, you expect to walk into a great gym, HA I laugh at that expectation. With all the issues, it is overpriced, especially considering there are other gyms in Bethlehem with similar pricing, or even slightly less, that are just better . If this gym were priced at $25 or $30 a month, it might be more reasonable, but at its current price point, it’s hard to recommend. Unfortunately, Steel Fitness is by far the worst gym I’ve been to in the area.
Fantastic experience: I've been a member for eight years and love it. You're not confined to a small space; people don't film their workouts for social media and the staff is friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: As a member of Steel Fitness - Riverport I am very happy when I come to this gym. There two floors and outdoor gym for hot days as well as a sauna and clean showers. The GM Mike is very personable and has been nice to me ever since I started coming to this gym.
Positive experience: Management is very helpful as well as the other employees. They have a great facility with a lot of different machinery and weights so you can experience a fulfilling workout. The sauna in the locker rooms is also a nice feature and not really included in any other local gyms in the area.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to Steel since I was 17. I’m 25 Now. Steel is dedicated to maintaining quality relationships and service with its clients. It is consistently growing, updating and changing its format for the better. The sauna and outside Turf is enough alone to want to be there. Management is down to earth and very friendly. Shout out to Micheal and Mark! You guys rock!
Fantastic experience: I like this place a lot can’t wait to keep working out
Fantastic experience: Top spot in Bhem.
Fantastic experience: Favorite gym I have ever been a part of! Great price and amazing attentive staff. Have been going for 6 months now and have had no problems. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: I LOVE Steel Fitness!! I’ve been going here for almost 4 years now, and it has yet to fail me. Mike the manager is really friendly and always willing to help if needed and knows the gym well. He’s a great manager and the members love him! I’ve gone to many gyms, and none of them have met my standards the way steel does. The atmosphere is the best and the set up is unique. I love how diverse the crowd is, there are people of all age groups. The outdoor yard is such a fun addition! If you’re looking for a new gym, give Steel a try.
Fantastic experience: Just joined the gym, vibe is nice. Great hours and outside area is awesome
Fantastic experience: My son and myself both love the gym. Great classes and people Great hours, easy access.
Fantastic experience: The best gym around. The gym is well kept and has great customer service.
Fantastic experience: The music is great! They also have great gym materials!
Fantastic experience: Being a student at Lehigh University whose really into physical fitness is very difficult especially when the school gym is packed 24/7, luckily I found Steel Fitness during my first few weeks of my freshman year and I love it, it’s a short walk from my dorm but it’s so worth it. With a large variety of equipment, friendly employees, and a positive atmosphere I couldn’t ask for a better gym.
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout inside is very clean and organized. And love the outside turf area
Fantastic experience: Great Gym In Bethlehem for the price. Outdoor area is fire!
Negative experience: I would give them 0 stars if I could. Absolutely abhorrent experience with them. Under no circumstances should you become a member here unless you want to be stuck paying for the membership MONTHS after you have graduated from school, provided information proving that you graduated and are moving away from the Bethlehem Area and will not need the membership. Managers are terrible, through talking on the phone and meeting in person, it is not worth the stress. Do not waste your time, find another gym, it is a waste, terrible customer service. It is not worth the time or the struggle. Absolutely terrible people.
Negative experience: Do not give them an email address that you actually use. I have been unsubscribing for years but I keep getting emails.
Negative experience: Extremely rude staff
Negative experience: Tried to cancel my membership and was told the manager will be in next week and that it takes 30 days to process... Sounds like they just want to charge another month
Negative experience: Owner is a thieve. He won’t cancel my membership. We have called many times, keeps making excuses. Left Bethlehem in May, kept charging every month. Beware of this person!! He is trying to make additional money scamming customers that he doesn’t have anymore.
Negative experience: They make it very difficult to cancel a membership. I’ve never experienced the run around like this in years of belonging to gyms. Membership was canceled in July with email confirmation, and we’re still getting charged, then got charged a $150 cancellation fee. When we tried to resolve the confusion we were met with rudeness and disdain. Still awaiting a resolution to get a refund for the $150.
Fantastic experience: Great space and clean!
Fantastic experience: Love Ty’s Bootcamp, the best!!! Great vibe & cool atmosphere. Wish they had even more classes but manager says they’re adding them soon. Highly Recommended!
Fantastic experience: Return Lehigh student just see my man manager Mike here! Salute to my man! Best gym in Bethlehem!
Fantastic experience: I've been a member of this gym for 5 years, and I can confidently say it's the best gym in Bethlehem. The facilities are always clean, the equipment is top-notch, and the atmosphere is welcoming to everyone, no matter where you are on your fitness journey. The staff is knowledgeable and supportive, making every visit a positive experience. A special shoutout to the manager, Mike, who is not only professional and friendly but genuinely cares about the members and the gym. If you're looking for a place to achieve your fitness goals, this is the place to be!
Negative experience: I usually have no problems with gyms where I have to give a one star review but this time… the ball was dropped multiple times and it is time for a REAL resolution. Manager Michael is very unprofessional when it comes to customer service and satisfaction. I need to speak to a position above him ASAP. I believe that would be Tom F. As a customer service profession there is no reason for Michael to not be able to find a resolution to processing refunds. You have told us weeks ago that the refund has been processed and when I came into the Steel Fitness Riverport to try to get a better understanding of the process you told me “I’m not talking to you anymore!” Absolutely unacceptable for a manager or any employee for that matter. Seems like the only one managing Michael is Tom. Let’s get this matter resolved ASAP.
Negative experience: First off, this gym is not worth the price that they advertise. Equipment is in bad shape, not maintained, and the staff is beyond rude. Mike the manager is known by name because he treats people with extreme disrespect! I wouldn’t even pay Planet Fitness prices for this junk anymore. They make you get a membership without giving you a copy of the terms of service, then you go to cancel and there’s over $100 worth of BS fees. Do yourself a favor and stay away!
Fantastic experience: Great neighborhood gym! Great for all fitness levels and people are friendly. Staff changes a lot, but understandable because it’s a college town. Me and my husband love the gym and the manager Mike is no joke, but he’s a good dude. Highly recommended!!!
Negative experience: Visited The gym a few weeks back and spoke with Michael at the front desk. I was searching for a new gym, I walked in with no issue. No one was attending the desk for more the 35 Minutes. So Basically I took the tour myself ♂️ I continued to work out and try the gym and the yard. Immediately I found out I liked this gym due to the yard area. As I was leaving Mike the man I met was finally at the desk. We exchanged words and I explained to him that I was seeking a new gym through my insurance and Active Fit. He then told me that they no longer work with them and gave me options about membership. He seemed ok and.down to earth, he seemed a little off but I’m a people person so we kinda talked for a bit, I told him I have one more gym to try and it was the Sister gym Steel Fitness premier. At steel fitness premier was a great experience and customer service was great with Deanna, she even told me about her promotion and that I was able to use her Gym and Riverport gym as well. It was a win win. For the past few weeks I have utilize both of them. Today was the first time Seeing Mike at the desk since the first time. Let me tell you ♂️ I greeted him before he even greeted me. Attitude sucked. I explained that I signed up at Premier and he gave me a look of death as if I disrespected him by doing so. I told him that I needed a key card for his gym as the premier one did not work to his door. He just said I don’t have anymore and stood looking at his computer. No help, no suggestion. Nothing. I continued on and when I left I said thanks and I appreciate it. He didn’t even look my way. All in all. Decent gym. Bad Managing. I would suggest checking out Steel Fitness premier.
Negative experience: DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM The problem with this gym is the manager he lacks any social grace or professionalism. He is unable to speak respectfully to guests. I was a Lehigh student and I joined due to the proximity to campus. DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE. Spend your money some place that is worth it like powerhouse or anywhere else. When I went in person to cancel my membership I was told I was all set. Then I got charged again, I called and they said that was the last charge. Then they charged me again and when I spoke with the manger her was extremely rude. He has done this to several of my friends as well.
Fantastic experience: I love the gym, been going here for two years, gyms been improving ever since manager Mike took over, me and my guys love it here, gym has a great atmosphere and it is filled with stellar different kinds of workout machines
Negative experience: I bought a membership through active and fit direct. On my first arrival at this gym the general manager turned me away. Claiming they no longer accept memberships through active and fit direct, while giving me a disapproving and unfriendly attitude. That information was between this general managers generic, uninformed and ignorant rant about active and fit direct. This display of behavior from Steel Fitness Riverports staff was blatantly unprofressional. I didn't argue. I called active and fit direct and their representative made contact. To remind them of the legally binding contract they signed through partnership with active and fit direct. Steel Fitness Riverport needs to contact active and fit direct to cancel their contract. Instead Steel Fitness Riverport rudely and dismissively turns members away who innocently signed up with active and fit direct. Even if they sort this out, I will never go to this gym again due to their poor level of customer service.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with friendly and welcoming employees.
Negative experience: The gym membership increased by like 40% and the equipment doesn’t follow suit dumbbells falling apart equipment is 10 years outdated and they have a steam room that’s never open since the gym was first opened 60$ for this membership is ridiculous this place needs a new owner someone who cares about it because it’s falling apart.
Negative experience: The gym sucks. The equipment is old and dusty. When we wanted to cancel our membership, they continued to charge us for the next 2 months because they only cancel it 30 days after receiving “proof of relocation”. What a desperate and pathetic policy!
Positive experience: After seeing some of the reviews, I was a little nervous about joining but I’m glad I did. The gym is a great place, has everything I need and then some. Although I’d replace a few machines, overall it’s great! The manager is cool, remembered my name the first day and always addresses me by my name. That goes a long way with me. What really sealed it for me was the fact that a guy had a medical emergency in the gym and the staff was so calm and attentive. Means a lot.
Negative experience: Staying at a local inn with a membership at this gym I decided to keep my workout schedule on Sunday morning. Hours online and on the door stated open at 7am. Yet at 7:10 the lights were off and doors locked. You will never succeed with this dedication to failure.
Negative experience: They got rid of active and fit; prices are insane for what you get. This place had potential. The lehigh valley has better places with better value imo.
Negative experience: I do not recommend this gym. Half the time the machines are down and 6 months after I canceled the membership they are still charging my card even after the credit card sent them a stop payment. This is absolutely unacceptable. Then on top of this they were rude and called me a clown for trying to resolve this issue. NEVER GO HERE.
Negative experience: Gym was alright at first, I liked the outdoor area and the fact that there was a sauna was nice because not many gyms in the area have one First issues came along when I paid for a parking pass, i was told by front desk staff that I was good to go and the next time I went I received a parking ticket. I asked the front desk about it and come to find out they didn’t enter my information for it and when I brought the ticket to their attention they basically told me to call the parking authority and deal with it myself and blamed it on staff being new/not trained. I didn’t bother dealing with parking authority because the ticket was only around ~$30 and it said any dispute would have to be dealt with in person and with my work schedule it wasn’t worth the hassle at that point. It would have been nice if the gym had did something to reimburse considering it was completely their fault but nothing was done. My friend paid for the parking pass the same day I did I believe, and luckily for him I told him to double check before he parked too ensure they did it right and of course his was also not entered/entered wrong. Sauna was alright some days but overall it usually had a funky smell I never noticed in other saunas and I’d see/hear about towels/water bottles left in the same spot for couple days in a row. I get sometimes if things are left behind you may not want to throw them out but you’d figure by end of the day by closing time if nothing is claimed it would be removed. A lot of equipment, mainly cardio, seemed to have some sort of issue or another, either buttons were broken, tv screens wouldn’t work, or machines would simply not turn on. Next issue came with membership renewal. I honestly forgot when I had gotten my membership, I thought I had initially signed up month to month (maybe around April 2023) but then signed up for a year up front around May/June 2023. I called around the end of March of 2024 to see if they could ensure my membership wouldn’t auto renew. Not sure who it was exactly that helped me (didn’t give a name) but they said that it seemed my membership would end around the end of June and that it would NOT auto renew. My friend who also attends this gym told me later on it actually does auto renew (he was under the same premise that it didn’t until he actually talked to a manager about this). I spoke with a manager about this today (4/24/24) and was told that the staff was new and they made a mistake when they initially told me it would not auto renew, which confuses me because I never said who it was so unless every staff member is new this wouldn’t make any sense. I’m not doubting at all it was a new employee, but still, seemed a little odd. Manager told me that the auto renew date was actually April 15th and would look into it (I haven’t been charged yet as of 4/24/24 thankfully, but now I’m nervous because i don’t know when it will go into effect, and considering I was initially told end of June it seems pretty wrong to now say that due to their mistake I have to pay up). It sucks because this gym does have a lot of potential, but considering what seems to be a lot of the staff not being trained on basic things, such as membership renewal policy, and the cleanliness/up keep of the gym could use some work, it made it hard to want to stay a member.
Negative experience: Filthy gym and overpriced for what you get.
Positive experience: Meets the bare definition of a gym. They finally bought a few new things after a year of no change/decay. You can tell management hardly cares. Broken machines take months to fix. The A/C was out for around 2 months last summer. There are never enough pins for the machines. The wipes containers are frequently empty. Almost every machine is old, with worn or absent grips. Same posters on the walls, same promotions up. The kind of place that has signs all over to keep bags in the locker room, yet does nothing about 8 people with their bags in the way all over the gym. That said, it is convenient for me, and I can get there at times it is not crowded. I am always in shape, but I am able to work out roughly the way I like there except for the terrible music.
Thanks for the input Terrance. As an fyi we added about 15 new selectorized pieces in 2022 as well 10 new pieces of cardio in 2023. 2021 we expanded the group exercise studio as well as adding new Olympic benches and Yard equipment. The HVAC was unfortunate for everyone and we spent every day trying to rectify it which we did. I will get the pins ordered and discuss the other issues with Mike.
Negative experience: Cancelled my membership on march 21st and was still billed for the month of April. When I called to dispute the charge with the front desk, the attendant said that is listed in the agreement and its stupid not to read the agreement. Why I'm paying for a month of membership when I already cancelled prior to the beginning the month doesn't make sense to me. Update: May 1st 2023, billed for another month, spoke with Michael over the phone. It was explained to me that canceling my membership on March 21st was only giving my 30 day notice so it wasn't cancelled until April. Then you have to pay for the subsequent month. Owner policy apparently. Update: February 3rd, 2024, I am still receiving bills from this predatory company and was receiving mail from a collection agency on behalf of steel fitness last year. Considering contacting a lawyer to consult about legal action against this business.
Ben. 30 day notice is extremely common in business and especially common in the fitness industry. You acknowledged that it was in your contract so I’m not really sure what the negative review is for. You are free to use the club during this time.
Negative experience: I visited the gym when I lived in Bethlehem but have been asking them to take my name off of their email list for the last 3 years with no luck. I’ve emailed and unsubscribed several times and either they ignore it or simply place me into a new list. If I were you, I wouldn’t give them any of my personal information. The few times I actually visited the gym were not worth 3 years of headaches. Thanks for you response but I just received a new email as of 01/01/24.
We will see that your name is removed. Thanks.
Negative experience: Horrible. I called to ask for pricing and the gentleman asked if I can come in; unfortunately, I won’t be in the area for another few day, so I asked for pricing over the phone. When asked “long term or short term” I responded “I’m not sure at the moment”, and the gentleman responded back with “that’s not what I asked” with such an attitude. Whoever works there really needs to learn how to talk to people. That interaction was rude and I will not be wasting my time to sign up there! DISGUSTING!
Negative experience: Unbelievably dirty gym. Locker rooms are filthy, a lot of the equipment doesn’t work. Men’s Sauna smells like arm pits . I never take my shoes off at this place. I always find the elliptical machine that I consistency use because there a clump of hair and dirt that has not been cleaned for months. Easy to spot.
Hi Richard. The club is cleaned regularly and the sauna cleaned and disinfected. We have brought it to the GMs attention to watch the random dust bunnies etc. let me know if there’s anything else bothering you.
Negative experience: This gym will actually try to scum you, like seriously. If you attempt to cancel your membership, they will legitimately try to find any way possible to prevent that from happening. They will either continue to charge you bank account or will refuse to answer the phone. The facility is nice, but definitely not worth the trouble.
Hi Hanania. Sorry for this issue. Was it resolved?
Negative experience: I called today and mentioned I wanted to get pricing for a friend in the area. They’re going through a hard time and it’s difficult for them to get motivation especially to make the first phone call for pricing. The woman thought she put me on hold and missed the button. They she started making fun and laughing, assuming I was making it up I guess? I hung up. Don’t waste your time since they’re not interested in helping people that need help.
Negative experience: This is going to be a long one! I joined this gym back in June and I was very clear with the front desk employee that I was shopping around for gyms and was ONLY interested in a month to month. He then told me what the month-to-month charge was, and I happily signed up for one month, so I thought! After a few workouts, I realized that the facility itself was extremely hot in temperature. I went to the front desk in the middle of my workout to ask about the temperature and I was told that the AC has been broken for weeks, but that they were working hard to fix it. The only place I felt comfortable working out, was outside and that should say something because it was June. After doing two or three workouts in the month of June, I realized that I was avoiding that gym because of the temperature so I decided that I wanted to cancel. The day that I went to cancel the Manager Michael was at the front desk. Michael and I had had a few really good interactions before so I sheepishly told him that I wanted to cancel because of the AC. He then changed his entire demeanor and became cold & looked in the computer and said to me well that’s not possible because you signed a one-year agreement - I was SHOCKED. I told him that there was no possible way that I would’ve signed up for a one year agreement when I was very clear with his employee that I only wanted a month-to-month But regardless of what my contract was, it was inhumane that the temperature in the gym was hotter than outside. We ended up getting into a pretty heated disagreement, I apologized at the end, and I felt like we left it on OK terms, and that he understood my reasons for leaving. To make a long story short, I went to the gym in person to speak to Michael on multiple occasions, because after I called the gym after our disagreement, one of the employees, looked at my profile and said that they didn’t see any card linked to my account so They were under the impression that Michael had in fact, canceled me. I was happy to hear that and I left that gym alone. Come to find out that I have been charged every month including this month of December even after Michael himself has said to my face on multiple occasions that I no longer have a card linked to my account. I obviously don’t work there and I do not know how their system works, but he did not seem to, be interested in looking into it any further, and just kept telling me that I was canceled. Finally, I spoke to an employee named Victoria on the phone who was smart enough to ask me for the card number itself that was being charged. Lo and behold I had a separate account where my phone number was wrong, my name was spelled, wrong, and card was linked to and being actively charged. I asked her if she could please have Michael call me back when he was in that day and of course he did not. I called again today to try and speak to him but unfortunately he was not in for the day yet. After reading multiple reviews above mine I am starting to notice a pattern, that seems a little funny. Not only is Michael, extremely unprofessional, and a terrible face for the gyms brand, he is a liar, and he does not know how to do his job, as well as his employees apparently do. If I was the owner, Tom, yes, I am speaking to you, I would really think twice about the people that you have working for you. I am a huge word of mouth type of person, and I will tell absolutely everybody that I come into contact with to stay far far away from that gym! Do not trust them! If I could give them zero stars, I would In response to owner comment: Hi, yes I understand the ac difficulty however your manager Micheal has already verbally told me that he would cancel me. Since this was not done I have been charged for every month since. I do not want a membership for Allentown as it is way too far from me and my busy schedule. I need for someone to issue the refund I am owed for months July - December or I will be in contact with the BBB. There is enough evidence in these reviews as well as testimonies from previous members of yours. Thank you.
Hi Carissa. So sorry for this hassle. I will take it up with Mike immediately. The AC was a huge fiasco and we ended up having to replace 2 units after months of our previous vendor telling us it was fixed and just waiting on parts. So I understand the frustration completely. Thanks for the honest feedback. If you would like a complimentary 3 month membership to Premier in Allentown let me know.
Negative experience: Used to love this gym years ago. Now I'm not so sure it's the most inviting environment. Really a shame
Trey. Can you share your thoughts on this so we can address?
Negative experience: I wasted my time so you don’t have to. I love the gym I have now but I’m always open to new things. So, when I saw an ad in the ArtsQuest magazine offering a day pass to try SFR, I figured why not. It went downhill immediately. After I checked in at the front desk, I was told I had to leave my physical ID with the front desk person until I was finished. I politely declined and when I asked why, the front desk person admitted it was a sales tactic to close the deal before someone leaves. I was given back my ID and went to use the bathroom. When I exited the bathroom I was summoned back to the front desk and led to the manager’s (Mike) office. After asking again what term of membership I’d be looking for, Mike said it was policy to leave my ID with him. I again politely but firmly refused and left to go back to my regular gym. Make no mistake, this is nothing but a shady and quite frankly bizarre sales tactic. In this age of identity theft, why would someone ever leave their drivers license with someone they’d never met or talked to before in their lives. I’m a 5’ 10” male power lifter and I still have the normal amount of safety concerns. What about someone half my size leaving the most identifiable information in the hands of a stranger to be copied. You already have my information in your system, why would someone ever need my physical ID? The answer is they don’t and nobody should ever acquiesce to such a demand. It is unsafe at best and unethical and dangerous all the way around. Why should you listen to me? Besides this being common sense and not a practice I’ve ever run across in my multiple gym memberships over 40 years of life, Security and Privacy are my profession. I make my livelihood on educating people to so they can protect themselves against awful swindles like what I experienced at Steel City Riverport. They should be ashamed of themselves and you, dear reader, should steer well clear of this particular gym.
Sorry to hear this. This is a common practice in the industry. Not really a sales tactic at all but there are reasons we ask non members for ID. Haven’t really had an issue for 18 years until this review. Sorry for your frustration.
Negative experience: Signed up through Active&Fit, since this site was listed as one of the options I could go to. I get there and apparently they had stopped doing the program, which is fine, but they should have updated the site so people do not sign up. I was able to do a workout though since I was there. The locker room was insanely gross and smelly. The sauna had dumbbells' , water bottles, and towels in it. It also smelled worse than the locker room. The outdoor section to lift was pretty cool, I enjoyed that. There is a lack of mirrors in the place which seemed a bit strange to me. Only at the main portion of dumbbells'. There didn't seem to be a good place to deadlift if one wanted to do that either. Even if the gym was included with the active&fit direct, I do not think I would want to attend anyway.
Positive experience: I've been coming to steel fitness since 2018 when Dan was the GM. I stopped during covid and recently made my way back this year. 5 times a week. I've seen GM's come and go. I love working out here but equipmemt has been broken for months with no eta on repair. When you ask staff it is always Idk. The gym is small but has so much potential under the right management. The one thing I will say, it needs cleaning. The floors, mirror in class room and equipment disgusting. It doesnt get cleaned. Lots of dust bunnys and sweat all over punching boxer bags. Front staff is great! Vickie is such a gem but she doesn't get treated as such. I really want more/newer equip. About 5 out of the treadmills are no working. We pay for this gym it needs to take into understanding.
Hi Sherri. Sorry we missed this. We just added 10 new pieces of cardio and some other pieces coming.
Negative experience: Great place to work out but no one has cleaned the locker room in at least 3 days same piss stains on floor from Tue night. I cleaned it myself so it good for a couple hours.
Fantastic experience: Having been a member of steel fitness for the past three managers, I can honestly say that the current manager, Mike, is the fairest one yet, and maintains a good relationship with every single person in the gym
Positive experience: The gym is pretty small compared to others in the area but is never crowded. They have all the basics you need to workout just nothing fancy, but I’m happy with that for the price. The staff is always friendly. My only complaint is if you guys can please get more pins for the weight stacks on the machines some of them don’t have one and you have to take it from another machine. They are very cheap to replace.
Negative experience: Worst gym. No AC for almost a month during peak of summer month and these people charge an additional maintenance charge every year without any notice. They charged me maintenance fee for the upcoming year even when I am no longer want to continue. When asked they said it's already charged, so they cannot refund me. Some equipment are broken and takes for ever to fix it. They also increase gym membership price without any notice. They increased mine from $20 to $25 without any notice.
Fantastic experience: Staff is so nice and was nice to give me a walk through of the gym
Fantastic experience: I gotta be honest that the AC being out for the summer has been wack af! However, the staff has been great and accommodating, added fans and everything. Getting yelled at everyday and still smiling. Manager is real cool too.
Negative experience: My experience at Steel Fitness gym has left me deeply disappointed and skeptical of their management. Despite personally confirming my membership cancellation in person on two separate occasions, I was still charged for an additional month. It wasn't until I noticed the false charge on the first of the following month (June 2023) that I reached out to them for a refund. Initially, they assured me that the money would be returned to my account within 3-5 business days. However, as the days went by, and today being the 8th of the month, I had to make another call to inquire about my refund. It was only after I threatened legal action on the phone that they finally took action and issued the refund. This incident not only reflects the lack of accountability on the part of Steel Fitness gym, but it also reveals their disregard for customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, I am not alone in facing such issues. Several of my friends have had similar experiences and we have collectively decided to switch to a different gym. It is disheartening to witness the deteriorating state of a gym we once loved, but our shared encounters have left us with no choice but to seek a more reliable and customer-oriented alternative.
Fantastic experience: Such a handsome young man working the desk. His name is Jacob I believe, what a greeting smile and gentle voice. Every time I step in those doors his glowing hello makes me want to hit those weights and get a sick bod just like his.
Negative experience: I joined steel fitness on Jan. 4th of this year. The process was great , the staff left me feeling very comfortable, as I have not bin inside a gym in over 20 yrs. So I was very excited to get started. It's been 3 months now of hard work, and feeling the results. My disappointment is the result of a parking ticket received on 4/6/23 after my workout. My truck and car are both registered with the club. I returned back to the club with the ticket and asked the morning staff to make sure that my truck was registered. He looked it up and said yes. He also said I was not the only one to receive a ticket this morning. The staff suggested I leave said ticket with him, I said I would rather he make a copy and I take the original. Fast forward to Monday 4/10/23 , 4 days later I asked the morning staff if he knew anything about the parking tickets issued to members, I also noticed a new parking ticket on the counter. He replied that he was unaware if anything had been done. After my workout I saw the manager was sitting at the front desk. So I approached him and asked, what was going to be done with the ticket. He looked at me and asked what I was talking about. So I politely explained. This is the point of my disappointment. He then wanted to know what he was supposed to do. I said well your the manager your supposed to take care of it. At this point he said good bye, have a good day. when I became a member I was told parking is free under the bridge next to the club as long as your vehicle is registered. Which is were I've parked for the past 3 months.
Rick. Let me look into it. We will make it right. Tom
Negative experience: Clean gym and super friendly staff. 2 stars because there's often not enough weights. all of the weights can easily be used up by just 3 people. Doesn't really matter if you use the indoor or outdoor section because people take weights from both spots and people frequently take weights off of other machines. Even had someone take weights off of my machine while I was warming up. Also, at one point half of the treadmills were out of service and the other half were either totally occupied or also broken. Not really sure if I'll be renewing my membership next year
Marcelo. Sorry to hear this. This is however the first time I’ve ever heard that we don’t have enough weights./plates. We had actually taken some off the floor due to the clutter and nowhere for them to go. We are looking at new treads.
Negative experience: When this gym first opened it was a fun place to work out at. But now idk what happened but everything is unorganized and dirty. Like how or why do you not clean the mirror or windows and what in the world is the uglyness on the ceiling. The sanitation station is never refilled. I highly recommend not putting your hands in the heavy bag gloves. Classes look exciting but if you go solo just to routinely exercise you will be disappointed in the amount of broken down equipment, I shouldn't have to repair your equipment just to start a safe work out. Going for classes probably worth it. Looking for a gym to start a regiment, this is not the one. And the staff lady with the weird mullet has a serious attitude problem for no reason. My response to your erroneous rebuttal. First of all, I have a right to file a review based upon my experience. And now with this experience, proves to everyone how childish and emotional you are. Resorting to presumptuous retaliation like an egocentric adult baby got there feelings hurt. Yes now I'm calling you names because yes you proved just that. Maybe I'll write more reviews on you based on this experience as well. Great job noodle, slow clap.
Not using your real name say a lot about you. But coming at a staffers appearance sums you up in a nutshell. We stand by the product. Hope you cancelled.
Fantastic experience: A great gym at an affordable price.
Fantastic experience: Been a member for 3 months now and love the gym. Only concern is the treadmills, half seem to be broken.
Thanks Jonathan! We are working on some bad D boards. Will be fixed up shortly.
Fantastic experience: Gm is great. Alot of new things are happening. Alot of improvements have been made.
Negative experience: After my old gym closed (retro fitness) I was going from gym to gym trying to find a new home. I was deciding between a couple different gyms and I ultimately decided on steel fitness. To be fair I know what this gym was and definitely didn’t sign up for the condition of there equipment. The biggest reason was that if i paid for the elite membership for the entire year upfront that it’s would include xyz and one of the perks was I could bring a guest whenever I wanted. Now I was in the other day and I was told “this is your last guest pass” I was flabbergasted. No warning whatsoever that they would be doing this. For a member that comes in and always leaves the place better than I came in (put more plates away etc). I was taken back. I feel like they are not keeping their word, and are just laughing at me because I already paid the year in advance. Sad. To makes matters worse they then asked my guest “o we are running a special when are you going to sign up” after telling me we are going back on our word and taking away guest passes. What makes you think I would have him sign up after that happened. Bizarre business practice.
Sorry to hear this Jeff. We revised the guest policy because it was being abused and so was the facility from non bought in members. It was a tough call but we have seen positive results already.
Negative experience: Steel fitness suddenly added a policy for 4 guest passes a year. One of the main pulling factors of this gym was that I can bring guests to try the gym if they enjoy it, but unfortunately this policy was thrown on us without warning.
Fantastic experience: Awesome
Fantastic experience: A true gym ! Less talking, more training going on here. I can work out, hit the sauna, and don't have to worry about bringing a towel as they are provided here. I typically always did strength training with weights, but the classes offered here like TRX, Climb, and high intensity classes really caught my attention and gave me a more well-rounded training routine. Great relationship between staff and members ! Always loved it here.
Thank you for the awesome review Jason! We love hearing from our members about their experiences with us and we are so happy to know that you are enjoying it here at our club!
Fantastic experience: They literally have everything in a gym I could ever want.
Thank you so much Jake!
Fantastic experience: Steel Fitness Riverport is amazing! Love their classes and casual social atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym. Results driven atmosphere.
Always happy to help Dean! Thank you for the 5 star review!
Fantastic experience: Not as big as some gyms, but it has everything I need.
Fantastic experience: Couldn't be happier! Nice, clean facility; awesome, helpful staff; and a great variety of classes! My favorite gym in the Lehigh Valley by far!
We are THRILLED that you are so happy with us Holly! Keep up all of your hard work!
Fantastic experience: It's a great place to workout. Friendly and helpful staff. Great assortment of equipment and awesome classes. Can't wait for the outdoor fitness area to start up this spring.Best gym in the Lehigh Valley!!!!
Thanks Zach for all of the appreciation you've shared with us today!
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love this facility. The staff is exceptional and so are the classes offered. I feel very at home at this club and could not imagine a more pleasant fitness experience!
Christina, this means the world to us. Glad we can be your home away from home!
Fantastic experience: TY's Bootcamp is awesome 12-1 on Friday!
Fantastic experience: Good Gym 100% Recommend
Negative experience: This gym was great when they first opened. Within the past year I have noticed that the cardio equipment is old, broken, and you need to skip from treadmill to treadmill until you find one that works. The free weights are great. The area all around the gym could use a good, thorough deep cleaning. I will be looking for a new gym.
Hi Allyson. We’ve been open since 2005. Id hate to lose a member of that tenure. As the owner I was just there today and the cleanliness is top notch. Our staff takes great pride in the cleanliness. Let me know what you are referring to and it will be addressed. Thx. Tom
Fantastic experience: Great place!
