Our comment from FitFit United States about Pav YMCA:

Pav YMCA in Berwyn offers a welcoming and community-oriented environment for fitness enthusiasts of all ages. With a spacious gym equipped with two squat racks, barbells, and plenty of cardio machines, it’s perfect for both weight lifting and cardio workouts. Users find the affordable membership options, including month-to-month plans, to be an excellent value, especially considering the access to a large swimming pool and various fitness classes.

Community members appreciate the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the facility, which contributes to a comfortable workout experience. While some equipment may be outdated and some users have expressed concerns about occasional maintenance issues, the supportive and helpful atmosphere largely outweighs these drawbacks. Special programs for families and veterans further enhance its appeal as a family-friendly location.

Additionally, the gym provides convenient amenities such as easy parking, locker rooms, and childcare options, making it suitable for busy parents. However, there are occasional mentions of disruptive behavior from certain individuals, which can be a bit annoying during workouts. Overall, Pav YMCA is highly regarded as one of the best places to stay fit, meet people, and enjoy a variety of activities, ensuring a fulfilling experience for all members of the community.

Positive experience: I'm swimming my butt off at the Y. The only thing is that sometimes I have to share a lane :(

Negative experience: Pros: neighborhood YMCA, meet neighbors, swim coaches Ms Emily and Ruben are excellent. Cons: aquatics program with high number of children at times up to 8 to one instructor for all ages including toddlers (per Aquatics director can allow up to 10). Inconsistent swim instruction (e.g. How to safely enter/exit pool). Swim instructors can change weekly (expect Emily/Ruben who show up regularly). Locker rooms are gross especially since the floor is muddy and hair is everywhere. One instructor allows swimmers to swim to end of pool out of reach. Unclear leadership despite having aquatics director. Overall will not be returning for any swim programming after the fall.

Negative experience: This place is an absolute joke. I’ve been a member for over a year, but it is no longer worth it. Where to even begin? Let’s start with today: I swipe my card and head to the locker room. I get called back to the desk where they tell me my membership hasn’t been paid since April (it’s my husband’s debit card) and I owe $87. Okay, that’s super odd that no one has said anything to me the several times I’ve been since then, but I tell them I’ll pay it with the card on file. They can’t do that- they physically need a card. I didn’t bring my wallet, only my membership card. They refuse to let me enter, just this once, until I can bring the debit card. I was on my lunch break and wouldn’t have time to bike home and return with it. Very unprofessional and not understanding of them! Secondly, the pool and jacuzzi are often closed without warning. I get that this is a budget friendly place, but it’s hard to justify the cost when I can’t even access the amenities. And lastly, the showers and bathrooms need to be cleaned more often. Clumps of hair linger in almost every drain and sink- gross!

Negative experience: Very disappointing about this place so far, my 9 yr old started swimming classes about a month ago, so far 4 different teachers. For a beginner class this is unacceptable, kids cannot learn the basics and be comfortable being in the water. The last teacher didn't even get in the water, simply told them to go back and forth in the pool. All the kids seemed to be struggling while he just looked. My 9yr old left the last session really discouraged. Definitely will not go back if it's the same teacher next session.

Negative experience: We started the YMCA PAV Berwyn in March of 2024, and would use the facilities an average of 3 times per week. Besides using the various machines, we were also utilizing the pool areas on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the interest faded quickly as we experienced the following issues with the exercise areas: 1. Weight room was cramped, and populated with few and outdated (and broken machines). 2. There is no pool area manager to ensure hygiene compliance in pool area (see #3 and #4). 3. People would immediately enter the pool without showering, primarily after use of the sauna, dripping in bodily sweat and other substances. 4. People would enter the hot tub un-showered, leaving the water in a green algae-like color. 5. Responses to these complaints onsite were met with indifference, and at times a hint of disdain. A known member suffered a Urinary Infection (UTI), on two occasions during a short time, tracking the timing of these occurrences was just after the use of the onsite pool at YMCA PAV Berwyn. Understanding that this is a “paid public” facility, the responsibility of maintaining and managing the onsite safety measures (including hygienic safety) is the contracting owner (YMCA). It is not my responsibility to inquire or enforce cleaning operations, or pool maintenance as a paying member. It’s obvious that some patrons believe their monthly payment, entitles them to utilize the gym / pool areas, as a personal spa. Therefore, staff and management need to adhere to practices that insure compliance in safety and hygiene of the facility. YMCA PAV Berwyn is a community center that its primary function is to promote health and wellness, to its patrons, and not as a personal bathroom or holiday waterpark.

Fantastic experience: As a kid, this place is great! Summer camp is enjoyable and the staff is very kind to everyone. They do tend to be a little ignorant towards dangerous child behavior, but overall, camp has given me such a great experience! I've gone to summer camp for 4 years, and I've never had a problem.

Negative experience: I have been coming here for over a year , everytime I will have an issue I will let Minerva know and she will kindly address it or every time I had an issue with my membership I was referred to Gerald and he will help . But today I was in sauna and someone approached me rudely telling me I couldn’t be there with regular clothing , he talked to me with an attitude telling me “well I work here and I’m reinforcing the rules “ he then proceeded to making me feel threaten by saying he was calling the managers . I kept telling him okay and putting my headphones back on and he just kept going and going on how I couldn’t be there he then called a life guard too to tell me that that was the rule mind you every day that sauna has people with regular clothing an has never been an issue . If it’s one of the rules it’s fine but the way he talked to me was unacceptable! I in no way was bothering him or in his personal space and the least he could have done was let me enjoy my 2 minutes there I had left on my timer . If he’s a lifeguard I will not get swimming classes for my children or let them go in there because he has POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE and I don’t want my children going through that . I chose this gym because my children love the daycare and the staff but with workers like this is what upsets me .

Fantastic experience: My name is Wendy Saldivar, I am really happy being a member of this Gym. All equipments works great, pool, jacuzzi and sauna amazing. The entire team are nice, I would like to thank to Maritza and Brian they are very nice, professional and respectful guys, Brian is very helpful too, he is really care about people in the pool.

Negative experience: Customer service not professional, rude & unfriendly. Basket ball court always packed with high school kids, not safe for younger kids to play ball even though is "open gym" sometimes. This was the reason we got a membership there so my 3 kids can play ball at the basketball court whenever we have some free time (that is the only place to play if you are not registered for some type of class), trying to get them to stay active and feel safe indoors. Can't even use the basket ball court most of the time because is always being used for some sort of class they have scheduled, we were told that we couldn't be there because of the class being conducted, we were told to leave. Membership is not worth it here for walk-ins to bring kids under 10 to run and play ball.

Gloria B 1 year ago

Negative experience: If I could leave 0 stars I would. This gym overall is a joke. Since we signed up the manager Minerva always has an attitude. I also overheard rude comments of my daughter yesterday just because my daughter cried. They suggest to call before coming in to reserve a spot for the kids at the daycare and when you call they don’t even know what I’m talking about. Also she left me waiting on the phone 30min and wanted to charge me 20$ for the daycare when we already have a membership. Overall if you want your day ruined come to this gym.

Negative experience: Lady at the front desk is ignorant and rude

ABIGAIL RAMIREZ 1 year ago

Negative experience: Had a family party planned months in advanced with the pool booked for an hour. Then, all of a sudden, very last minute and unprofessional might I add, decided to tell us that there was no lifeguard available for kids’ pool party. Have been coming here for years and never encountered any problems until today. Very disappointed and flabbergasted by the unprofessionalism of the scheduling conflict and the way the situation was handled.

Negative experience: I would’ve given this place 5 stars but after my daughter told me how she was treated by the staff in summer camp never again !!! If you enroll your kids make sure you ask them everyday how camp is and the staff. My daughter was happy to go for a while then noticed after a while a change she didn’t want to go wasn’t happy. Staff apparently only pay attention to certain kids and the rest the don’t really interact with or mistreat!! I will definitely be reporting this facility we pay way too much money for our kids to be mistreated at a camp. I would look elsewhere !!!

Noel Anaya 1 year ago

Negative experience: I liked this place until today. I showed up with my son to possibly obtain a free pass to play basketball. The woman to the left has very poor customer service skills(older woman with blonde streaks in her hair) she looked up at us then looked back down and said “if you guys need day passes we’re not giving them out” 1.) she didn’t even call us to the desk. 2.)no eye contact 3.)looked down the whole time she said it Perhaps good customer service would’ve been: 1.)acknowledge us and call us up to desk 2.) ask what we needed 3.) and say “sorry but at the moment there are no day passes available” It was just horrible customer service. Hoping it’s better for my next visit.

Negative experience: Joined this gym for a few months so me and my daughter would have a safe place to workout. Pros: -Nice track where you can run/walk/jog -Teens can workout alone if they complete the orientation -Very family friendly environment Cons: -Machines are very old and a lot don't work. For ex. all of the water bottle holders on the ellipticals are broken, leg machine Velcro strap doesn't work, etc -Parents don't respect not allowing kids (young kids after daycare closes) in the cardio room and it doesn't seem safe them running around in there -Kids classes end at age 14 but all of the workout classes for adults start at 16+. My daughter is 15 and I don't want to keep asking for exceptions... -Cost is too high for what the facility offers Overall I think this place is best for families or parents with young children. Just was not for me! Also no one ever asked why I wanted to cancel they just cancelled my membership (easy process btw which I appreciated). You'd think a place would want feedback to improve in the future possibly, but nope.

Positive experience: I like this place but i think we can't go on friday's because the lady who was in the day care looks like she hates her job and they called me 5 minutes after i droped My kids of there SO i hope You guys work on it we are paying alot of money For a membership so i hope You guys work on that thanks!

Fantastic experience: I went in to ask some questions & left with a membership lol. Maritza gave me a lot of useful info; newcomer Jackie gave me a tour & signed me up. They had a Valentine’s Day deal going on so I saved some money. The first time I went in to workout, they had a cart full of bags filled with sweet potatoes. Turns out that was leftover food from their Community Market event for seniors that they have 2x/month. You better believe I took home some sweet potatoes lol.

Negative experience: Called to ask questions about craft fair and woman who answered was no help whatsoever. Couldnt even direct me to someone that could help... Useless !

Brian Mendoza 3 years ago

Positive experience: I signed up for the weight room and it's worth the price. Yeah, you could pay $25 at charter or blink, but good luck trying to get a set in at peak hours. Although this place can get busy sometimes, the people that go there are more than happy to work in or let you know when they're wrapping up. I've been to a few gyms in the area and this one is by far the most welcoming and easy to lift in. The equipment is decent, two squat racks, two barbells, mirrors, and a roomy machine section. If you plan on using the pool, track, or basketball court, then it's definitely worth it. Can be a little musty with broken equipment sometimes but it's a community run thing, can't really complain that much. Unfortunately, there's this weird guy that claims to be a trainer that's there sometimes. Wears sunglasses and shirts a few sizes too small... likes to stare at women. Will walk around and bark orders at people despite nobody in the weight room having any issues. If you don't comply, he'll bring up an actual staff member to make you do what he wants. Nothing to ruin a workout though, just a tad bit annoying.

Fantastic experience: Definitely could be better, but still deserves 5 stars because the YMCA offers parking, affordable prices and an unusually spacious gym. Though the building may need some reparations, I think the YMCA is overall a great gym. Been going here for the past decade and have never found any place in the Chicago area that has an affordable membership to an indoor pool.

Fantastic experience: Family/Community/veteran friendly. Low-key, not crowded. Clean. Affordable “month-to-month”. Easy lot parking. Badge scan-style check-in. Big swimming pool. Lockers/Changing room. Strength-training gym is more than sufficient.

Positive experience: Great place to work out. Yes machines are old and out dated but still work. Maintenance crew is great very friendly always clean the girls do an excellent job. (Except for the creepy Male maintenance person he stares at you while working out and smells nasty and sweaty.) But I love the environment and friendly staff.

Negative experience: For the amount of money that they’re charging you would think that this gym is well maintained. But sadly that’s not the case, this gym needs major updates. A lot of the machines are out of order. Some of machines are rusting and squeaking. This gym needs new machines!! Also there’s a lot of water leaking into the building. Very disappointed with this YMCA!!!

Fantastic experience: 1 of the BEST "Y"'s there is anywhere

B M 4 years ago

Negative experience: Overpriced memberships that don’t include any classes. I believe they offered 3 personal training classes for 99 dollars. Workout classes for adults are overpriced. The pool and locker rooms are gross. Summer camp is also overpriced and they don’t offer you much assistance if your a single parent. Also the director Sabina will ignore emails, voicemails etc. do your job.

Fantastic experience: I enjoy going here regularly. I have a three month old daughter who can stay at the childcare center there, and the women who work there are so kind and giving. Also I love the diversity of age and different people that attend this YMCA- it makes for a lot of really interesting and fun conversations. Looking forward to getting into the pool and the fitness classes.

EB 6 years ago

Negative experience: The YMCA has zero disregard for your time. I signed up my daughters for a sport class each. When I went to take my 1st daughter they told me it was in the gym but there was no class there just a bunch of kids playing basketball after waiting I then ask again and after waiting some more they told me it was cancelled. Nobody called or messages or email me just let me drive there. While I was there i asked about my other daughter class she said it was low count kids but that it was not cancelled. Next day same thing I get there no class no teacher in the gym we all get to stand around nobody knows what's going on then they sent us home with a promise they will call. My biggest issue with this is that once is a safety issue what if dropped my 10year old off and I left? And came back 10 or 20 minutes later to find out she is nowhere to be found. Is not like they were going to make sure they told her it was cancelled. My other issue is that my time is important I need to know if class is cancelled. Also my other issue is that I wont get my money back for almost a month. I don't work signing up my kids for a class each was my max. I dont have extra money to sign them up for another 2 classes. This policy should change for classes they cancelled so my kids get to take another class right away instead of waiting for next time classes start. So there you go they clearly don't want to make it easy for my kids to take another class. In a month I'm sure I could have found something better. Edit I do want to update I did call the YMCA to complain and had someone call me the next day he did apologize and gave me a credit so I would not have to wait a month for next class.

Negative experience: Worst YMCA ever! I pay 80$ for a family plan.and I can never bring my kids to swim because they always have classes. And close the pool for the members.they have open swim during school hours makes no sense staff is never nice always in a bad mood. I am really ready to cancel my membership. Place sucks!

Negative experience: It was all good until I got banned for a fight I wasn’t in. They said that because I didn’t try and help the staff I got banned. Negative experience: Such a rude place. The rules are not establish the same with every staff. One person tells you one thing and someone else tells you another. In the gym there is always something out of order. It’s more of a headache than anything else. Some seniors think they own the place and want you to be quiet like it’s a church or library when you are simply talking to someone next to you minding your business. The staff is also rude. They don’t take into consideration that we are paying our money here and want to humiliate you in front of other people. Canceling my membership ASAP not worth it at all for what they have to offer. The only thing awesome about this place is the pool instructors for the kids and the Hispanic lady from the front desk.

Negative experience: The staff here are extremly rude, especialmente Ms Susan ans Ms. Sabina. We came on the first week of camp to pick up my grandson to be told from the staff he was not here. My husband and I went into a panic espically since my daughter works in the hospital with no recesion who can not answer calls. An hour later someone call admitting to the mistake telling us to come pick up our grandson. One week late, Ms Sabina, over step her boundaries, making my daughter to leave work from Mac Neal hospital telling her she has no chocie to pick up her son at 2:30. My daughter was caught by the train and Ms Sabina blew out calling everyone in our family to my grandson's dad to my husband who also left early to pick out grandson. Why are you doing that MS SABIA!!!! IF YOU CAN NOT CONTROL THE KIDS DO NOT BLAME IT ON. MY 5 YEAR OLD GRANDSON. You made all of us unwelcome here. There is no need to pick on our family especial a child.please stay away from this place.

Positive experience: I like that it has childcare so when you work out you have someone watching the kids while you workout. I do like classes available for the kids. I do not recommend the tumbling class for toddlers. The instructors did nothing with the kids and just let them run around and have no guidance or instruction. That was a waste of money.
