Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA: Opinions
Negative experience: I pay for a family membership(about 100/mo) and I think it would be worth the money if the staff wasn’t so strict and judgmental. Since I started going there, the staff looks at me like I’m an alien when I smile at them, except for three male employees who are usually in the gym and have had conversations with me. I don’t expect conversations, but not feeling out of place would be nice, especially in a place that many people struggle to go in the first place. Two female employees have embarrassed me multiple times about my clothing choices, (why am I not allowed to wear a sports bra in a gym that I’m paying to go to, not to mention it’s about 80 degrees in the gym). I’m sensitive so both times this happened I left in tears. People should feel welcomed at the gym, not ashamed. Please train your staff on customer service skills and change your dress code.. or at least make it more clear to avoid embarrassing your customers.
Negative experience: Not much to do for homeschoolers. Shouldn't we receive the same benefits as people who enroll their kids in daycare?
Fantastic experience: So fun, I love working out here, playing sports, and swimming
Positive experience: Very clean equipment good shape
Negative experience: Moved across the state and it took months for me to get a hold of somebody to cancel my membership. When I finally did I was forced to pay a “balance” on a membership I haven’t used in nearly a year. Lady on the phone also said I need to “come in” to fill out paperwork and asked how far I moved… I’m not driving three hours for that & I don’t enjoy paying for services I haven’t been using. Shouldn’t be that hard
Fantastic experience: It’s super fun there and great to work out.
Fantastic experience: Love the community vibe.
Positive experience: Great set up but disappointed with no whirlpool but the staff were quite considerate
Negative experience: The hours are ridiculous. closing at 4pm on a weekend. Seriously?!
Negative experience: Don't trust your children with this YMCA childcare, they are NOT safe. They are left with one to two adults when they have over 20 children. Your children cannot be adequately monitored and are at risk of injury or worse. The director and managers refuse to staff the childcare properly and have no care about your children other than securing their paychecks.
Positive experience: Love the circuit training. Great place! Unfortunately, this isn't a secret, as it is also kind of crowded compared to other gyms. I used it mainly for the circuit training. I wish the prices would come down though...as of this review, price is $50 a month for an adult! Not worth it for what I use it for: 20 minutes every two or three days...
Fantastic experience: Family oriented activity center. Recently remodeled as well
Positive experience: Best Gym around - Pool, Fitness Classes included with your membership, you get what you pay for. A few programs mostly for kiddos. Staff is always great. Wish we had the therapy "hot tub" pool and The female and male separated steam rooms like Niles. Worth a try!
Fantastic experience: great community gym.
Negative experience: Most of the staff is very rude in the lockers rooms there's just trash everywhere and most of the equipment is very old
Fantastic experience: great community gym.
Negative experience: I’m ultimately extremely disappointed with Stephen who is in charge of sports. I reached out to him 12 times and left 5 voicemails, including 5 messages with the front desk just to simply have him call me and discuss a simple topic that our family is interested in. It’s been several weeks and I still haven’t heard a peep from him. Every time I call he is “away from his desk”. Very unprofessional and disrespectful. A little common courtesy goes a long way.
Negative experience: The older lady with the gray hair at the front desk is condescending and ignores the phone ringing, the bathrooms and showers in the family locker room are always filthy with hair on the floor, trash is full, the shower curtain is stained, dirty and disgusting, the life guards are rude and not friendly at all, the pool area is outdated, most of the swim equipment we arent allowed to use during open swim unless we are in a class or doing swim laps, the gym always smells of bad body odor all the time, the snacks at the front desk area are overpriced and my son goes to the monthly ymca night out for kids and he tells me that they get one piece of pizza for dinner and water, that's it. I pay 20$ everytime he goes to the night out and we are members and i pay 65$ monthly, and that is what they feed our kids. Also, the pool has so much chlorine, it burns your eyes. The good things are that the other staff at the front desk is nice and they have nice work out equipment but all in all this location is in bad need of remodeling and new staff. Wish we lived closer to the Niles location, it is MUCH nicer there.
Fantastic experience: Love coming here after dropping the kids off to school....offer a lot of class my fav is the aqua workouts and that steam room definitely be on point and there is always time and peace to enjoy a good book

Fantastic experience: Great
Fantastic experience: I loved it.
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome! The staff is always friendly and greets you when you arrive. The place is usually semi full, so if your looking to take a jog on a treadmill, there will always be a spot for you! The swimming pools are great, yet kids always vomit but thats the kids fault not YMCAs. This is a great gym to be in!

Fantastic experience: Excellent in every way.
Fantastic experience: I was visiting from the Seattle area and got the week temporary membership (only $2 more than a day pass for the week). Nicest swimming pool I've been in for a long time. No crowds, and play area is well segregated from lap swims. Zumba and Boot camp classes were amazingly fun and effective. Body Pump would have been enhanced by using the newer Les Mills equipment (benches, weights, bars, and clips) but may be a budget issue. Instructors were awesome anyway :)
Fantastic experience: The best fitness club in the twin cities area for the price you pay, especially for the young adults until 29 years of age, monthly fee is just 29$. Great facilities!
Positive experience: Great staff
Fantastic experience: Fees lowered in 2015 and new membership categories!
Positive experience: Love the sense of community among many other things.
